Why Arsenal’s Saka can’t play for Super Eagles – Rohr

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has insisted that it would be difficult for Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka to play for Nigeria now ahead of England unless the youngster’s eligibility status is sorted out.

Rohr stated this ahead of Nigeria’s international friendly match against Brazil on October 13 in Singapore.

“On Bukayo Saka of Arsenal, it is not easy to invite players who has played already for England or other countries in the U-17, U-18 and U-20 categories.

“It is very tedious and requires long processes to do so. I could remember that it took us one year before Ola Aina’s issue was resolved before he was cleared by FIFA and was eligible to play for us (Super Eagles), Rohr told Sportinglife.

Saka has been impressive for Unai Emery’sArsenal so far this season.

The 18-year-old has scored two goals and registered two assists in five matches for Arsenal this term.

Europa: Martinelli impresses in Arsenal victory

Teenage striker Gabriel Martinelli scored two goals and set up another to give Arsenal victory over Standard Liege in the Europa League.

There was less than three minutes between the 18-year-old Brazilian’s first and second goals while team-mate Joe Willock, 20, made it 3-0 before half-time.

Martinelli, who joined for £6m this summer, later set up Dani Ceballos for his first Arsenal goal.

Arsenal sit top of Group F with two wins from two games.

There were 10 changes to the Arsenal team who drew with Manchester United in the Premier League on Monday but no place in the squad for German midfielder Mesut Ozil.

Instead, manager Unai Emery put faith in the likes of academy graduate Willock, Martinelli and 19-year-old Reiss Nelson – as well as summer signing Kieran Tierney, making just his second start for the club.

All four impressed as Tierney set up Martinelli’s first with a whipping cross from the left before teeing up Nelson’s shot in the build-up to Willock’s goal.

Nelson recorded an assist – feeding Martinelli for his second – before slipping in the Brazilian to tee up Ceballos’ goal in the second half.

It could easily have been more for the Gunners on a very positive night which also saw full-back Hector Bellerin, captain for the night, make his first start in over nine months following a knee injury.

Dortmund chief is a clown – Aubameyang

Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has taken to Twitter to hit back at claims that the Gabon striker only left Borussia Dortmund for money.

The claim was made by Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke in an interview for a German newspaper.

The 30-year-old moved to Arsenal from the German club for a fee of £56m in January 2018.

“Better for you I never talk about why I really left Dortmund Mr Watzke. You are such a clown,” Aubameyang tweeted.

“I remember that time you said we never gonna sell Ousmane [Dembele], then you saw more than £100m, you were the first to take that money.

“Don’t talk about money please. Leave me alone please,” he added.

Watzke had been talking about the future of England player Jadon Sancho, who is in his third season at Dortmund, when he made this pointed reference about his club’s former player.

He told Suddeutsche Zeitung: “Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who plays great at Arsenal, will probably be warm-hearted when he looks at his bank account, but on Wednesdays he will be saddened when he has to watch the Champions League on television.”

In his reply, Aubameyang referred to the departure of France forward Ousmane Dembele in the summer of 2017, who was sold from the German club to Barcelona for £135.5m.

EPL: Aubameyang earn Gunners point at Old Trafford

A vital VAR intervention for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s strike gave Arsenal a 1-1 draw at Manchester United in the Premier League on Monday Night Football.

In a disappointing encounter that was a pale shadow of their mighty clashes of years gone by, Scott McTominay gave Manchester United the lead at the end of an attritional first-half with a rising drive from the edge of the area.

Arsenal equalised just before the hour courtesy of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s cool finish. It was originally ruled out for offside but the video assistant referee confirmed the striker had been played onside by Harry Maguire.

Goalkeeper Bernd Leno excelled for Arsenal with fine saves from Maguire and Marcus Rashford’s late free-kick, while Bukayo Saka’s goalbound shot crucially struck Victor Lindelof and flew over the top.

McTominay also headed a great chance well over from Ashley Young’s corner but neither side could force a winner.

The result takes Arsenal into the top four but Manchester United are now down in 10th after an outcome that means they have made their worst start after seven games in 30 years, failing to reach double figures for the first time since 1989-90, a season in which they finished 13th.

Emery reveals why Xhaka was named Arsenal captain

Arsenal manager, Unai Emery has revealed the reasons behind his decision to name Granit Xhaka as the club’s new permanent captain.

The Swiss international had worn the armband during the opening weeks of the new season and has now been appointed captain on a permanent basis, replacing Laurent Koscielny who left the club to join Bordeaux this summer.

Xhaka’s appointment as captain is likely to divide the club’s players and fanbase, with Emery as well as the midfielder having come under-fire for a series of below-par performances this season.

The 27-year-old was jeered by sections of the club’s support following his substitution in the win over Aston Villa last weekend. However Emery has defended the player and backed Xhaka to thrive in his role as leader.

Speaking on Friday at his pre-match press conference ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Manchester United, Emery said: “He (Xhaka) is mature, he has experience. We are living under pressure and criticism, as a coach, as a player as a club.

“The most important thing is to stand up in each moment. Go ahead with his quality, with his behaviour, with his commitment and the players voted him as the first leadership.

“I spoke with him, we want to change that outside opinion [of him]. The respect he has inside is very important.

“I trust and believe in him. He is a good man, a good professional, a good player. Sometimes he has made mistakes but the most important thing is to analyse, to learn and correct those mistakes.

“His challenge is to change that opinion and above all, with his personality, and improving each match and giving us his help every time.”

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has named midfielder Granit Xhaka as the club’s new permanent captain, replacing Laurent Koscielny, who left for Bordeaux in the summer.

Emery told the squad of his decision on Friday, after consulting with players.

The Switzerland international, 27, has led the side in six of their eight games in all competitions this season.

Arsenal’s next game is away to Manchester United in the Premier League on Monday.

Emery is still deliberating over a vice-captain, with forwards Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang understood to be the leading contenders.

  • After Arsenal’s exit, Wenger declares love for rival club

Arsene Wenger has said Manchester United is a “dream job” and claimed he has “ideas” about restoring the club to its former glory.

Wenger ended his Arsenal career at the end of the 2017/2018 season, after 22 years of service with the North London club.

The Frenchman has mainly appeared as a pundit, but is yet to land a permanent job.

“Manchester United is a dream job for any coach. I have confidence, I have courage…and you’re right, I have ideas,” Wenger told Fox Sports Asia.

The 69-year-old also believes that United would be capable of contending for honours once more with four key signings.

“They need -in my opinion – four first-team players.

“But around those players, I see a squad that is capable of challenging. They aren’t as far away as people think.

“The team have no pattern of play, no pattern of pressing. There is a team there, but it needs to be coached and developed. Like I said, four players and they can be challengers. For everything,” he added.
