Fulham close to signing Chambers on loan from Arsenal

Fulham are close to completing the signing of Arsenal defender Calum Chambers on a season-long loan deal.

An agreement has been reached between the clubs, but personal terms still need to be finalised.

The 23-year-old, who joined Arsenal from Southampton in 2014, signed a new four-year contract last month.

However, the club and player are keen for him to gain regular Premier League playing time, which is not guaranteed at Arsenal this season.

It follows the signing of defender Alfie Mawson from Swansea in a deal that could cost up to £20m and the arrival of Serbia striker Aleksandar Mitrovic for a reported £22m last week.

The Cottagers have also signed Spanish goalkeeper Fabri from Besiktas and German forward Andre Schurrle on loan from Borussia Dortmund, as well as Ivory Coast midfielder Jean Michael Seri and French defender Maxime le Marchand from Nice.

Chambers played 12 times in the Premier League for Arsenal last season, with the Gunners adding defenders Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Stephan Lichtsteiner to their squad this summer.

    Landslide kills woman, seven children

A landslide killed a woman and at least seven children in Nepal over the weekend as officials issued warnings on Monday of the risk of more landslides and flash floods due to torrential rain.

Working in the downpour, rescuers in Bheri town, about 310 kilometers (193 miles) west of capital Kathmandu, were still searching for a missing boy, having pulled out one survivor.

“Army and police personnel are digging with shovels through mud for a 12-year-old boy, who is missing,” Krishna Khatiwada, a senior government official in Bheri, said.

The dead children were aged between three and eleven years.

Flash floods and landslides in the June-September monsoon season are common in mostly mountainous

Nepal is home to eight of the world’s 14 highest mountains, including Mount Everest.

Samir Shrestha, an official at the weather forecasting office in Kathmandu, said more landslides and flash floods were likely as heavy rains were forecast for hilly areas in central and western Nepal through on Tuesday.

Residents in Terai, the southern low lying region bordering India, had been warned to beware of floods as water levels were rising in many rivers, he said.

Aubameyang strikes as Arsenal end pre-season with win over Lazio

Reiss Nelson and substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored as Arsenal beat Italian side Lazio 2-0 in their final pre-season friendly in Stockholm.

Forward Nelson netted a first-half rebound after Alex Iwobi’s low strike hit the base of the post.

Aubameyang came on at the break and scored with a precise finish.

Arsenal are next in action on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season, when they take on defending champions Manchester City.

Unai Emery’s team played Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and PSG in addition to Lazio during pre-season as part of the International Champions Cup, a tournament featuring 18 teams playing at 23 different venues in the USA, Europe and Singapore.

Summer signing Lucas Torreira made his debut in midfield for the Gunners against Lazio, while veteran Swiss Stephan Lichtsteiner came off the bench to also make his first appearance for the club.

Kanu congratulates Iwobi on Arsenal contract extension

Nigerian legend, Nwankwo Kanu, has congratulated Alex Iwobi after the Arsenal winger penned a new long term deal with the Gunners on Friday.

Iwobi, 22, put an end to speculation over his future by signing a new four-year contract with the North London club

“Congratulations @alexanderiwobi We wish you higher success at @arsenal Hard work pays. .
    #coyg #congrats #premiership #nigeria #arsenal #thankgod @Arsenal,” Kanu wrote on his Twitter handle.

The talented winger who broke into The Gunners’ first team in 2015, extended his 13-year stay with the North London club he joined at the age of six.

He scored three goals in 26 Premier League games last season and also featured for Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

  • EPL: Arsenal’s Kolasinac out for up to 10 weeks

EPL: Arsenal’s Kolasinac out for up to 10 weeks

Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac will be out for between eight and 10 weeks with an injury to his left knee.

Kolasinac, 25, suffered the injury during Wednesday’s friendly with Chelsea in the International Champions Cup in Dublin.

The Bosnia-Herzegovina full-back hurt his knee in a challenge with Victor Moses and Gunners boss Unai Emery said he would have a scan.

Kolasinac is expected to miss up to eight Premier League games.

The former Schalke player is also likely to be absent for two Europa League group matches and the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Meanwhile, Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey is hoping to return to training next week after a calf problem.

  • Alex Iwobi signs new long-term Arsenal deal

Alex Iwobi signs new long-term Arsenal deal

Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi has signed a new long-term contract, the Premier League club announced on Friday.

Iwobi has been at the Arsenal academy since he was nine years old and already has 98 first-team appearances at the age of 22.

“I’m very pleased Alex has signed a new contract with us,” Emery said. “He is a great example of a player who can succeed from the Academy through hard work and I look forward to working with him and our other talented young players in the squad.”

Iwobi is the latest of Arsenal’s younger players to commit their long-term futures to the club, following the likes of Hector Bellerin, Calum Chambers, Rob Holding and teenage midfielder Emile Smith Rowe.

Mesut Ozil and Granit Xhaka also signed new deals this year, but Aaron Ramsey’s future remains in doubt as the Welshman has so far refused to accept an offer from the Gunners as he enters the final year of his deal.

Iwobi is the nephew of Jay-Jay Okocha and broke into Arsenal’s first team during the 2015-16 season and impressed with his blend of size, speed and playmaking ability. However, he struggled at times last season and has yet to add an end product to his game.

He has nine goals so far in his 98 appearances and his wasteful finishing has been a source of frustration among fans.

However, the new deal is a sign Emery hopes to help the Nigeria international develop, although he faces stiff competition for a starting place from the likes of Ozil, Ramsey and Henrikh Mkhitaryan this season.

“To get an extended contract is an amazing feeling and I hope I’m doing the Arsenal family proud,” Iwobi said. “The first kit that I had was Arsenal and long may I continue to represent them.”

  • EPL: Arsenal need miracle to win title – Kanu

EPL: Arsenal need miracle to win title – Kanu

Unai Emery’s Arsenal must produce a “miracle” to win the Premier League in the Spaniard’s first season at the club, says former striker Kanu Nwankwo.

Former Paris St-Germain boss Emery, who succeeds Arsene Wenger after 22 years, claimed success in 2018-19 would constitute “battling for every title”.

Emery has added five signings but Kanu believes the Gunners, sixth last season, must be patient.

“If it happens and they win the league, it’s a miracle,” said the Nigerian.

“It takes time for the newcomers, the new signings, to adapt. We have to allow time for him to bring his own style and the way he wants to play.”

Kanu helped Arsenal to two league titles during five years at the club and was part of the undefeated ‘Invincibles’ side of 2003-04.

Arsenal are yet to win the Premier League since then.

“For the new manager, it’s going to be a very big challenge; the fans want them to perform in the league in his first year, which is always difficult for a new coach,” Kanu said.

“It’s a very big club – coming into a big club you need a trophy, so if you don’t win the league, you need to win the others. It’s hard, but that’s what you expect of a coach of that stature and a big club.”

Emery has added Uruguay international Lucas Torreira for £26m, along with goalkeeper Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen, defenders Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus and Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund, as well as 19-year-old midfielder Matteo Guendouzi from Lorient.

“He’s been signing new, good players. They’re more defensive, and not allowing goals, which is good,” Kanu added.

“They have to know how to win games, even if it’s 1-0. All they need is the three points.”

  • Arsenal score with 17 seconds left, beat Chelsea in shootout

Arsenal score with 17 seconds left, beat Chelsea in shootout

Petr Cech saved penalties in normal time and in a shootout as Arsenal beat his old club Chelsea in the International Champions Cup in Dublin.

The Gunners’ keeper denied Alvaro Morata from the spot in the first half as the Blues dominated, with Antonio Rudiger heading them in front.

Arsenal improved after the break and Alexandre Lacazette equalised with 17 seconds left to earn a shootout.

Both sides scored their first five, but Cech saved from Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea side face Premier League champions Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday in the Community Shield, while Arsenal boss Unai Emery has injury worries before the new season after losing both Aaron Ramsey and Sead Kolasinac.

Ramsey, who was listed on the teamsheet to start, suffered a muscle injury in the warm-up and was replaced by 18-year-old Emile Smith Rowe in the starting XI.

Kolasinac appeared to hurt his knee in a challenge with Victor Moses and will have a scan.

“We will wait for the medical analysis but we think it’s not a big one,” said Emery. “For Kolasinac it might be different. We will wait for a scan to know better.”

    New Chelsea faces impress

Chelsea were far brighter in an open and lively first half at the Aviva Stadium, with teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi at the heart of all of their good work.

His fine run in behind set up Cesc Fabregas for a shot which Cech tipped over, before the Arsenal defence left Rudiger completely free from the following corner to head home from 12 yards.

Hudson-Odoi then tricked Hector Bellerin into conceding a penalty with a clumsy challenge, but Morata’s tame effort was easily saved.

Morata looked short of confidence all night, with the centre-forward role maybe causing Sarri the most problems in his squad as he enters his first season in England.

Hudson-Odoi was then denied by another great Cech save before the break, and though the youngster faded he was easily the most impressive player on display.

Others to catch the eye for the Blues were £50m midfield signing Jorginho and substitute goalkeeper Marcin Bulka, who saved well from Alex Iwobi and Lacazette late on.

“We had our first training on 16 July and we are late compared to Arsenal on the physical condition,” said Sarri.

“We have done very well in the first half and then we made a mistake in the last minute.”

Asked about the future of Hudson-Odoi, the Chelsea boss added: “He will be a very, very strong player. “Will he be in the first team squad? I think so. He will be staying with us for all the season.”

    Better late than never

Arsenal also had new faces on display, with Emile Smith-Rowe again playing well after he came into the starting XI at the last minute for midfielder Ramsey, who was injured in the warm-up.

Matteo Guendouzi – signed from the French second division – continued his fine pre-season with another confident showing, and Emery will surely be pleased with his side’s second-half display.

Lacazette and Iwobi both failed to make the most of their late chances, but the French striker finally found a way through in stoppage time when he steered in Reiss Nelson’s low cross from close range.

“We are very happy with the 90 minutes because the performance got better during the match,” added Emery.

Arsenal: Cech, Bellerin, Mustafi, Sokratis, Kolasinac, Elneny, Smith-Rowe, Guendouzi, Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang, Ozil

Chelsea: Caballero, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Rudiger, Alonso, Jorginho, Fabregas, Barkley, Hudson-Odio, Morata, Pedro

  • Wenger admits 22-year reign at Arsenal ‘perhaps’ a mistake

Arsene Wenger has admitted staying at Arsenal for 22 years was “perhaps” the biggest mistake of his managerial career.

The 68-year-old, who was appointed on October 1, 1996, stepped down as Gunners boss in May after winning three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups.

The Frenchman left Arsenal with a year remaining on his contract after his side missed out on Champions League qualification for a second consecutive season and he admitted he now looks back on his time in north London with a tinge of regret.

In a wide-ranging interview with French outlet RTL, Wenger had this to say when asked what the biggest mistake of his career was: “Perhaps staying at the same club for 22 years.

“I am someone who likes to move around a lot, but I also like a challenge. I’ve been a prisoner of my own challenge at times.”

Wenger also revealed his obsession with ensuring Arsenal’s success on the field had a heavy toll on his personal life it and questioned whether that is a price his former players Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira, who have both moved into coaching, would be willing to pay.

“I regret having sacrificed everything I did because I realise I’ve hurt a lot of people around me. I’ve neglected a lot of people. I’ve neglected my family, I’ve neglected many close ones,” Wenger admitted.

“Deep down though, the obsessed man is selfish in his pursuit of what he loves. He ignores a lot of other things. But it’s a bone to chase at the same time.

“Often, I’m asked if Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira will be good managers and I always answer yes. They have all the qualities; they’re intelligent, they know football, they have excellent skillset, but do they want to sacrifice what needs to be sacrificed. It’s an obsession which bounces around your head day and night.

“You wake up at 3am thinking about team selection, tactics, formation…”

Wenger also revealed he turned down the opportunity to manage his native France on numerous occasions.

He is now contemplating whether a move into international management would suit him and expects to make a decision on his future “in the next few months”.

“Yes, I’ve had the opportunity numerous times to be France manager. I’m not sure if it was before or after Domenech,” Wenger said.

“Maybe both… I’ve always been more interested in the day-to-day aspect of management. I find it much more stimulating.

“It is a question I’ve been asking myself, if I should become a national team manager. A national team manager takes charge of ten games per year. In a club, you take charge of 60. My drug is the next match, so…”

Looking back on his time at Arsenal Wenger pointed at Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ season, when they went through 2003/04 undefeated as his greatest achievement and admitted his own players were initially sceptical the feat could be achieved.

“Effectively we were unbeaten for a year and a half. 49 games. It’s an interesting detail because when we won the title in 2002 I told the press my dream was to win the title unbeaten,” Wenger said.

“I got lambasted as pretentious, arrogant etcetera. We lost the title the next season to Manchester United.

“In 2003/04, I asked the players why we didn’t win the title. They said, ‘it’s your fault’. I asked why.

“They said: ‘you put too much pressure on us.’ And it’s interesting because I told them the only reason I said it was because I truly believed it. And then they did it. Which proves two things.

“One, sometimes we don’t put the level of ambition high enough. We don’t dare, we’re scared. But you must set the bar as high as possible. Two, sometimes you must plant the seed and wait for it to grow.”

  • Arsenal coach Emery wants ‘five captains’ in his team

Arsenal coach Emery wants ‘five captains’ in his team

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery says he wants “five captains” in his team as he tries to find the “best personalities” in his dressing room.

The Spaniard, who took over from Arsene Wenger in May, said Laurent Koscielny would remain his “first captain”.

“My idea is to know every player and to know, also, the personality of the players,” said Emery, 43.

“We want to keep the respect for these players, to find the captain and choose very well the best player for that.”

France centre-back Koscielny, 32, is expected to be out until December with a ruptured Achilles tendon, which caused him to miss the World Cup.

Full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner, one of Emery’s five summer signings, skippered Switzerland in Russia this summer.

“I think my first idea is to have five captains in the team,” Emery added. “But at the moment, I don’t know the names.

“We are looking at, looking for, who are the players whose personality is the best in the dressing room.”

‘We signed the players we needed’

In addition to Lichtsteiner, Arsenal have signed Germany goalkeeper Bernd Leno and Greece defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, as well as midfielders Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi.

Former PSG and Sevilla boss Emery said that could conclude their summer business.

“Maybe we can bring in one if there’s a very good possibility for them to help us, but the club has done a great job of signing new players and I am happy.

“We signed the players who we needed. We will only sign a player in the next month if he’s a big opportunity.”
