Why Liverpool clash ideal for Jorginho – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta heaped praise on veteran midfielder Jorginho this weekend.

The Italian came back into the Gunners starting lineup against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta admitted he needed the intelligence and experience of the midfielder in his otherwise youthful team.

Speaking after the 3-1 win, Arteta stated: “It’s a game that I had in my mind, that I was imagining how much we were going to need him. They’re a team that don’t really allow you to put the fifth player in the frontline, the way they play.

“He’s a really intelligent player, his biggest quality is that he makes the people around him better. He connects everybody. I think he was man of the match.”

He then finished on Jorginho’s quality: “Unbelievable. I always say that he’s an example, a role model. He’s been in a lot of pain because he’s had an issue he’s been carrying for months.

“He didn’t want to stop, he’s been playing with that. He’s been training, always the first one in and the last one out. For all the kids at the club, if you want to look at somebody, just look at him. He’s won everything but you ask him not to play or play one minute last week he’s happy to go there. Ask him to play 90 minutes at that rhythm and he’s able to do that. I’m really lucky to have players like this.”

Arsenal reignites Premier League title bid

Arsenal reignited their Premier League title challenge by thrashing struggling Crystal Palace at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners’ fight at the top had faltered towards the end of last year as they lost three of their past five Premier League games.

But, after heading off to Dubai for a week-long winter break, Mikel Arteta’s side returned reinvigorated as a Gabriel header, Dean Henderson own goal, a Leandro Trossard finish, and two late Gabriel Martinelli strikes sealed the three points.

The first two goals came from corners, with the opener coming in the 11th minute when Gabriel nodded in before the defender’s header from another set-piece struck Crystal Palace goalkeeper Henderson to deflect into the back of the net.

The visitors offered little in response. Instead Arsenal added to their lead in the second half when Trossard was sent one-on-one with the goalkeeper and kept his cool to finish confidently.

With Palace already well beaten, Martinelli added further sheen to the win with two goals in injury time, both swept into the far corner.

The win moves Arsenal up to third, two points behind leaders Liverpool but having played a game more than Jurgen Klopp’s side. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, remain 14th in the table.

Arteta announces plans for Smith Rowe

Premier League club Arsenal have rejected all approaches for Emile Smith Rowe.

West Ham were said to be in talks with Arsenal for the midfielder this week.

But football.london says Aston Villa, Newcastle and West Ham have all had their attempts rebuffed.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said on Friday: “I’m really happy with Emile. He’s in the right trajectory. He’s settled really well and you know I’m not going to talk about individual situations

“No changes. Emile is Emile. We’re really happy to have him. He needs chances. What we have to do is give him minutes.”

  • Arteta psychologically killing Havertz – Chris Sutton

Arteta psychologically killing Havertz – Chris Sutton

Former Chelsea star Chris Sutton has claimed Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is psychologically ‘killing’ Kai Harvertz by deploying him as a center-forward.

Havertz has played several positions under Arteta since joining the Gunners from Chelsea last summer.

Arteta deployed the Germany international as a striker during their recent FA Cup third-round defeat to Liverpool.

Havertz spurred chances during the encounter after chance as Arsenal suffered a 2-0 defeat at Emirates.

However, Sutton feels Arteta is not doing the 24-year-old any good by playing him up front as a center-forward.

“I don’t think he is doing any good for the Arsenal team and I don’t think it’s doing any good for Havertz, Psychologically when he plays as a striker he looks shackled, he looks like the weight of the shirt is too much for him and he dithers and delays. He doesn’t think clearly,” Sutton said on It’s All Kicking Off Podcast.

“I think it affects him when he knows he is a number nine, going to the game, getting changed, playing in that position I think it effects him. Kai Havertz is a good footballer, but Mikel Arteta playing him as a number nine kills him it destroys him psychologically, he has to play him as an eight and when he does play as an eight he seems to enjoy it more.”

Harvertz has made 29 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing one assist.

  • Mikel Arteta warns Arsenal fans on striker criticism

Mikel Arteta warns Arsenal fans on striker criticism

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has defended his team’s lack of goals.

Arteta insists last season’s effort was a one-off as the Gunners struggle this time around.

“What they [the forwards] did last year was exceptional and we knew that to maintain those numbers would be extremely difficult because it was a one-off,” said Arteta.

“Not just for us, a one-off in the league. We know that we need all the resources and all those kinds of goals to maintain the level that we want in the league.

“When it comes to those spaces, the timing and the definition of the action [in front of goal] that becomes trickier to coach and certainly to replicate as an action in the game. It’s very tricky but it’s something that we have to improve, especially in the way we have not transformed recent chances into goals.”

FA Cup: Liverpool knock out Arsenal, Man City cruise to victory

An own goal by Jakub Kiwior and a thumping late strike by Luis Diaz sealed a 2-0 victory for Liverpool at Arsenal in the weekend’s headline FA Cup third round tie.

The result meant the hosts’ dismal form extended into the New Year on Sunday.

Arsenal wasted a sackful of chances in the first half and were made to pay as Liverpool captain Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free kick glanced off the head of Kiwior in the 80th minute.

Diaz then made sure of eight-time winners Liverpool’s place in the fourth round draw as he lashed home in stoppage time.

Earlier on Sunday holders Manchester City romped to a 5-0 victory over second-tier Huddersfield Town with Phil Foden scoring twice and Belgian playmaker Kevin De Bruyne returning to action after a four-month injury layoff.

Arsenal have now lost three games in a row in all competitions and the wayward finishing that has seen them drop down to fourth in the Premier League was evident again as they squandered a flurry of first-half chances.

“The performance was there and the amount of chances too.

“We just have to win the game, but we lost it and we are not capitalising.

“To win games we need to capitalise,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told reporters.

Reiss Nelson latched on to a punt forward by Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale in the fourth minute but could only shoot into the side netting.

Captain Martin Odegaard then rattled the crossbar with a fierce drive after a mistake by Joe Gomez.

Kai Havertz could not capitalise on two good chances as Arsenal failed to punish a lacklustre Liverpool side who were without a host of players including Mohamed Salah who is on international duty and an ill Virgil van Dijk.

Arsenal continued to make chances in the second half with Bukayo Saka volleying clumsily over from Declan Rice’s cross.

Liverpool then woke up with Ramsdale saving from Diaz and Diogo Jota heading against the crossbar before the unfortunate Kiwior inadvertently glanced in Alexander-Arnold’s inswinging delivery from a free-kick.

Colombian winger Diaz then sent the 7,000 visiting fans wild as he slammed an unstoppable shot past Ramsdale.

“Everything was better in the second half.

“I’m really happy and proud we could win this game.
“Arsenal could have won it without a doubt.

“We finished it off and it spoke for the character of the boys,” Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp told reporters.

A strong Manchester City side suffered a setback when they lost defender Manuel Akanji to injury early on and Huddersfield were proving stubborn opponents.

This was until Foden fired them ahead and Julian Alvarez poked home a second before the interval.

De Bruyne entered the fray in the 57th minute and Manchester added their third a minute later.

This was after Norwegian winger Oscar Bobb tried to pick out the Belgian at the far post, only to see his deflected cross loop into the net to make it 3-0.

Foden added his second with a precise shot and De Bruyne teed up fellow substitute Jeremy Doku to complete the rout.

“We are incredibly delighted to have him back, because Kevin helps to win games.

“It is so important to have him back after a long injury,” coach Pep Guardiola told reporters.

    Elsewhere Premier League sides struggled.

Luton Town played out a scoreless draw at home against third-tier Bolton Wanderers while Nottingham Forest will also need a replay after a 2-2 draw at the City Ground against third-tier Blackpool.

West Ham United were held to a 1-1 draw at home to second-tier Bristol City.

Championship promotion hopefuls Leeds United had no such problems as striker Patrick Bamford netted a brilliant volley in a 3-0 hammering of Peterborough United.

Also, West Bromwich Albion cruised to a 4-1 win at home to Aldershot Town.

EPL: Fulham beat Arsenal 2-1 at Craven Cottage, Tottenham thrash Bournemouth 3-1

Arsenal’s hopes of winning their first premier League title in years have been dented after a 2-1 loss against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Bukayo Saka’s early goal was followed by a rousing Fulham comeback, and goals from Raul Jimenez and Bobby De Cordova-Reid condemned the Gunners to fourth position.
Bernd Leno could only tip Gabriel Martinelli’s curling shot straight into the path of the onrushing Bukayo Saka who tapped home.
Fulham responded in the 29th minute when Raul Jimenez equalized for the home side, when he stretched to turn home Antonee Robinson’s cross at the back post.
The home side continued to dominate after the break despite Arteta’s decision to replace Jakub Kiwior with Takehiro Tomiyasu.
They eventually took the lead when Bobby De Cordova-Reid tapped home after a scramble at a corner.
Elsewhere at London Stadium,  Pape Matar Sarr had a contrasting experience in the Premier League, with highs and lows, as Tottenham bounced back with a 3-1 victory against Bournemouth in a thrilling matchday 20 encounter.
The result leaves Tottenham occupying the 5th position a point behind last season’s runners-up Arsenal.
Win, lose or draw on New Year’s day against Newcastle,  Liverpool will top the log for the new year.
  • EPL: Why VAR didn’t cancel West Ham’s controversial goal against Arsenal – Mark Clattenberg,

EPL: Why VAR didn’t cancel West Ham’s controversial goal against Arsenal – Mark Clattenberg,

Reasons have been provided why West Ham’s first goal against Arsenal at the Emirate was not chalked off after it was checked by Video Assistant Referee (VAR)

VAR gave  Tomas Soucek’s goal for West Ham against Arsenal on Thursday night despite the ball appearing to go out of play in the build-up.

Soucek scored a tap in inside 13 minute of the encounter after receiving a pass from Jarrod Bowen

However, the goal was shrouded in controversy, as it was awarded following a long VAR check.

VAR checked two angles before deciding that the goal should stand.

Ex-Premier League referee, Mark Clattenberg, speaking on Amazon Prime, said: “The on-field decision is a goal, so they have to find conclusive evidence that the ball has gone out of play.

“From the angles I have seen, the ball looks to be slightly in play.

“There’s no other decision the match officials can give. The assistant referee, who is on the goal line, cannot see clearly if the ball has gone out of play.

“The on-field decision is a goal. When you look at all the evidence, we cannot be 100 per cent certain that the ball has gone out.”

EPL: Why we couldn’t beat Liverpool – Mikel Arteta

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has given detailed reports why his team “didn’t find the right quality moment in the final third” against Liverpool on Saturday.

Liverpool and Arsenal settled for a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening at Anfield.

Gabriel Magalhaes’ early header was cancelled out by a fine Mohamed Salah finish.

Both sides had chances to score again, but eventually settled for a share of the points.

Arteta, speaking to Sky Sports, said: “A big test and we absolutely came through it. The boys were incredible. One of the most intense, hectic games I have witnessed in 20 years in this league which says a lot.

“It was an unbelievable game of football with two teams that raised the bar to another level, both sides wanted to win and played as such. In the last 15-20 minutes our team really wanted to win but we didn’t find the right quality moment in the final third to achieve it.”

EPL: Arsenal are difficult to play – Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp has said Premier League rivals Arsenal have become stronger and difficult to play against.

Liverpool host the Gunners on Saturday.

Klopp said: “I thought they looked like that last year, to be honest, then some results kicked in or whatever, I don’t know exactly the reasons.

“I remember our game here, they were outstanding until we found a way into the game – and then maybe in the end we should have won it. Maybe they had other chances as well, I can’t remember them, to be honest, but I can remember Ibou Konate at 2-2 with the chest half a yard in front of the goal… I am still wondering how he couldn’t score there. That was the team we faced, a super-strong team.

“That’s what they are – and you bring in Rice and Havertz and that doesn’t make you worse. Raya in goal doesn’t make you worse. Mikel built exactly the team he wanted and they are difficult to play. They are a good mix between physicality, like big, strong players, fast, good technique, very good organisation, they are really well-coached, well-drilled. You can see every year they make another step.

“They really have my respect but we want the points anyway.”
