North London derby: Arsenal and Tottenham play out thrilling draw

Tottenham came from behind twice to secure a hard-earned point in the north London derby against Arsenal in a thriller at Emirates Stadium.

In a relentless encounter, Arsenal took the lead after 26 minutes when Bukayo Saka’s shot was deflected into his own goal by Spurs defender Cristian Romero.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had made the big decision by keeping David Raya in of goal ahead of Aaron Ramsdale and he justified that faith with two fine saves from Brennan Johson as Spurs went in pursuit of an equaliser.

Raya should have done better, however, when Spurs levelled three minutes before half-time. He could only claw away a cross allowing an attack to continue, ending with James Maddison crossing for Son Heung-min to equalise with a deft finish.

Arsenal restored their lead after 54 minutes when Romero was penalised for handball following the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee, Saka scoring from the spot.

Spurs, illustrating their new positive approach under manager Ange Postecoglou in his first north London derby, were back on terms almost instantly when Jorginho, as a half-time substitute for the injured Declan Rice, lost possession to Maddison, who played in Son for another cool finish.

Arsenal coach told me ‘you have to leave the club’ – Leno

Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno admits his departure from Arsenal was bitter.

The Germany international is in his second season with the Cottagers.

Leno told The Times: “When I realised it wasn’t a question of performance, I immediately thought I had to leave. I don’t know if they didn’t want two strong goalkeepers. I had one year left on my contract and it was the last chance I could be sold.”

Leno then discussed the battle between Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya at Arsenal.

“It happened again after the international break. I was thinking, ‘This is pretty much the same thing that happened to me!’ I was thinking about Aaron, he’s a really good guy. I know how it feels, there are some similarities. When I wanted to fight for my position, the goalkeeping coach told me: ‘You have to leave the club’.”

Don’t judge Tottenham on North London derby – Postecoglou

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou wants his players to stick to their system when facing Arsenal today.

Postecoglou has stated the performance in the derby will be more important than the result.

He said, “We’re five games in. I understand that for many people, they will see this as our first real test and I get that.

“It is pretty easy, you could almost write two stories now. If we are successful, great, we’re on the right track. If we’re not, we’ve still got a long way to go. For me, what is going to be more important is how much of our football I see in a big game like this. How much of us can I see against a top opponent?

“That will give me the biggest indicator of where we’re at but, ultimately, we’ll still be six games into a new cycle, a new group of players, a very young group of players. Either way, irrespective of the outcome, I’d say the performance will be my biggest measure, but knowing we still have a long way to go.”

kai Havertz not worth £65m Arsenal paid – Souness

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has taken a swipe at Arsenal attacker Kai Havertz.

Souness is unconvinced by the summer arrival from Chelsea.

He wrote for the Daily Mail: “They’ve laid out £65million on Kai Havertz.

“Surely you’re not spending that kind of money on what he’s shown at Chelsea in the past three seasons? They’ve shelled out in the hope that Mikel Arteta can get a very, very different tune out of him than Frank Lampard, Thomas Tuchel or Graham Potter ever did.

“Good luck with that one, Mikel.”

UCL: Arsenal thrash PSV, United lose narrowly to Bayern, Madrid left it late against Visiting Union Berlin

Manchester United put up an impressive performance but slumped to a third consecutive defeat in the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League opener at the Alianz Arena.

Christian Eriksen should have opened the scoring inside the first five minutes only to be denied by a sharp save from Sven Ulreich. A howler from Andre Onana then gave the hosts the opening goal and they continued to flow on a strange night in Munich.

Leroy Sane added a second before the break and Rasmus Hojlund netted his first goal for United to give them hope of a comeback after the restart.

Eriksen was harshly judged to have handled the ball which led a a penalty that Harry Kane dispatched with ease. Casemiro then score twice – either side of a Mathys Tel rocket – but United couldn’t rescue a draw.

It was yet another loss for the visiting Red Devils but the game was adjudged an improved performance from the visiting team.

Elsewhere, Arsenal began their return to the UCL in style after thrashing visiting Ditch side, PSV Eindhoven 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

.The Gunners delivered a perfect performance after six years away from Europe’s premier cup competition to head into the North London Derby against Tottenham this Sunday, live on Sky Sports, in fine form.

  • Arteta predicts more goals from Declan Rice

Arteta predicts more goals from Declan Rice

Declan Rice’s stoppage time goal in Arsenal’s last-gasp 3-1 defeat of Manchester United on Saturday was only his 11th in 208 Premier League games.

But manager Mikel Arteta believes the club’s record signing can start hitting the net regularly.

The former West Ham player is happiest as a deep-lying central midfielder.

But with the quality of Arsenal’s squad, Arteta expects the 105 million pounds (132.17 million dollars) player to add goals to his already impressive attributes.

“When you see the technical ability that he has and how he executed in these moments.

“His range when shooting from accuracy and the power he generates with no space, with both feet.

“He’s got the timing as well to arrive in the box. The position will dictate that a lot because it’s about how you arrive. But he’s got the ability to do that for sure,” Arteta told reporters.

England midfielder Rice’s goal arrived in the sixth minute of stoppage time and gave Arsenal a 2-1 lead before Gabriel Jesus broke free to seal the points a couple of minutes later.

His deflected effort sparked delirium on the Arsenal bench and in the stands and felt like the moment that he really announced himself as an Arsenal player.

“Big matches for big players and Rice was tremendous.

“He dominated in the middle of the park, he understood what was needed and gave the team motivation and then produced the moment of magic to win the game.

“To produce the same level of quality there when the pressure is on in that moment is just unique.

“You need to have that quality, that sense and that composure. He showed it today and he’s there,” Arteta said.

Arteta also said Rice’s impact went beyond the pitch.

    “He’s a great kid.

“I think he’s got a good mixture between being extremely demanding with everybody and himself, having a bit of banter and being around the staff and the boys in a really humble way.

“So I think he’s fitting in brilliantly,” he said.

Arsenal were held at home by Fulham the previous week with champions Manchester City already showing that they will be offering up few gifts to their rivals this season.

It was no wonder the celebrations were wild at the final whistle.

Although Arteta said he was not getting too wrapped up on waiting in hope for Manchester City to drop points.

“There are still 34 games to go! If you deserve it after 38 games you will be where you deserve.

“We can only focus on that because it’s very early,” he said.
