EPL: Arsenal suffer new Saka shocker

Winger Bukayo Saka is set to miss another eight weeks as Arsenal’s injury crisis worsens.

The winger’s hamstring injury, sustained in December, could keep him out until mid-April.

Arsenal had initially hoped he would return next month, but his recovery has been slower than expected.

Photos from the club’s training camp in Dubai showed Saka working through rehab drills, per The Sun.

Mikel Arteta is now left with just Leandro Trossard, Raheem Sterling, and Ethan Nwaneri as experienced attacking options.

With Saka’s explosiveness dependent on his right leg, Arsenal are unwilling to take any risks, meaning his total absence could stretch to four months.

Arsenal suffer huge blow as Havertz is ruled out for season

Arsenal striker Kai Havertz has been ruled out for the season after picking up a hamstring injury during the club’s Dubai training camp this week.

Manager Mikel Arteta is now without a recognised centre-forward in a major blow to their Premier League title hopes after failing to sign a backup striker this winter. Havertz’s teammate Gabriel Jesus ruptured his ACL earlier this season which prompted the club to seek reinforcements that never materialised.

The German striker is Arsenal’s top scorer this season with 15 goals in all competitions and now with scan results are confirming that he is unlikely to play again this season it could mean the club’s shot at the title is over as their attacking threat is nulled.

The Gunners jetted off to Dubai for a warm-weather training camp to give Arteta’s squad a much-needed break after an intensive run of games in January. This move seems to have backfired however as Arteta will now be forced to deploy one of Leandro Trossard, Ethan Nwaneri or Raheem Sterling in the centre forward role.

Arteta spoke on Nwaneri recently who is just 17 years old and now has a lot of pressure to perform for the North London side.

“I think he can develop into a No 9,” Arteta said in December. “He has got the goal in front of him and he looks at the goal and he has a tremendous ability to put the ball in the back of the net.”

Saka traveled with the club to Dubai and was pictured working in the gym but is not expected to return for at least another month after picking up a hamstring injury much like Havertz. Arteta will have some serious planning to do ahead of their clash with Leicester City this weekend where the Foxes may feel they have more of a chance to snatch a result now Arsenal have been dealt another huge blow.

EPL: Arsenal give update on Buakyo Saka recovery

Premier League side Arsenal have provided a positive injury update, revealing Bukayo Saka is back in the gym as he recovers from a torn hamstring.

Saka has been sidelined since suffering the injury against Crystal Palace in mid-December, with Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli also facing fitness issues.

Mikel Arteta recently confirmed Martinelli will undergo a scan for his own hamstring problem.

The Gunners’ inconsistent form in front of goal has left them trailing Premier League leaders Liverpool by six points, with the Reds holding a game in hand.

Currently in Dubai for a warm-weather training camp following their FA Cup exit, Arsenal confirmed Saka is making progress in his rehabilitation.

His return would provide a much-needed boost as the team looks to reignite their title challenge.

Arsenal hit by Gabriel Martinelli news

Premier League club Arsenal have been hit by an injury suffered by Gabriel Martinelli.

Martinelli broke down during Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semifinal second-leg defeat at Newcastle United in midweek.

A hamstring injury will see the Brazil attacker sidelined for over a month, says the Athletic.

The Gunners are already short of numbers in attack with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus out, with the latter out for the season with an ACL injury.

Compounding the issue was Arsenal’s failure to sign a new striker in January, despite an attempt for Aston Villa centre-forward Ollie Watkins in the final days of the market.

Transfer: Arteta disappointed by Arsenal’s winter market

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits he was left “disappointed” by their winter market campaign.

The Gunners failed to add to Arteta’s squad, with a striker said to have been a priority.

The window was Arsenal’s first since Edu’s resignation as technical director.

“We had a clear intention which is always when a window opens to explore the opportunities to improve our squad with players that can make an impact,” Arteta said before Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at Newcastle on Wednesday.

“With players injured, we’ve been impacted and we haven’t achieved it.

“We are disappointed in that sense but as well we are very aware that we only want to bring certain kinds of players and we have to be very disciplined with that as well. I think that we were.

“It’s in the profile, a player that we believe can make us much better. Financially there is a lot of ways, a lot of things that we must stay in the lane that has taken us this far and from there try to improve.”

Don’t ask me about Haaland taunts – Arteta

The father of Erling Haaland hit back at taunting Arsenal players after Manchester City’s 5-1 humbling on Sunday.

Myles Lewis-Skelly copied Haaland’s goal celebration after scoring for the Gunners, while Gabriel Magalhaes laughed in the striker’s face after Martin Odegaard’s goal.

Arsenal’s players were reacting to Haaland’s taunting of manager Mikel Arteta at the end their 2-2 draw earlier this season.

“This Team that wins everything. Ehhhhh, not,” posted Alf-Inge Haaland on social media afterwards.

Asked about the two incidents, Arteta said afterwards: There’s nothing I want to discuss about that. That’s down to the players but they know my view on it and we have to focus on us.”

Pressed on what those views are, he added: “We have to focus on us and leave anything that happened, it’s part of the game, on the pitch. I have been in football a long time. Whatever happens, just leave it. There’s nothing there to do.”

EPL: Arsenal crush Manchester City to stay in title hunt

Arsenal delivered a statement of intent in the Premier League title race with a 5-1 hammering of champions Manchester City to close the gap at the top to six points on Sunday.

Captain Martin Odegaard fired Arsenal into a second-minute lead and City were finished off in ruthless fashion after the break with teenagers Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri both on target for the rampant Gunners.

Erling Haaland’s 55th-minute equaliser, his 250th senior career goal, had briefly raised City’s hopes, but they could have no complaints as any lingering chance of winning a fifth successive title surely disappeared into the north London night.

Arsenal are now 14 games unbeaten in the league and have 50 points from 24 games with leaders Liverpool on 56 from 23. Manchester City are a distant fourth with 41.

Arsenal have been accused of being over-reliant on set-piece goals this season but on Sunday they played with fluency and flare to rack up their biggest home win of the league season.

“It was a top game, a top performance and with the fans and the atmosphere it can’t be better, so very happy. In the end, I think we got what we deserved, “Odegaard said

City, whose six-game unbeaten run in the league had suggested they were returning to form, were generally second-best apart from a lively spell before halftime when Arsenal keeper David Raya was forced into a couple of crucial saves.

“It is difficult. I think all of us don’t take losing well,” City defender John Stones said. “It is hard to put into words straight after a game like that. How we played in the last 30 minutes was not acceptable.”

Sloppy City gifted Arsenal the lead when Manuel Akanji was put in trouble by teammate John Stones and was dispossessed before Kai Havertz calmly set up Odegaard to sweep home from close range despite an attempted block by Stones.

With City at sixes and sevens, Arsenal thought they had made it 2-0 shortly afterwards when Gabriel Martinelli lifted a shot past Stefan Ortega but was adjudged to be offside.

City were spared further punishment when they again lost the ball playing out from the back and Havertz, with the whole goal to aim at, somehow dragged his shot wide.

Haaland touched the ball only six times in the first half but came alive in the 55th minute to head in Savinho’s cross.

For a moment it looked as though Arsenal’s earlier misses might haunt them but 38 seconds after the restart Phil Foden gave the ball away and Thomas Partey’s shot deflected off Stones to leave Ortega with no chance.

With their tails up, Arsenal looked to rub City’s noses in the dirt and Lewis-Skelly took a pass from Declan Rice before sending a right-footed shot past the diving Ortega.

Havertz made up for his earlier miss with a clinical finish from Gabriel Martinelli’s pass after a counter-attack.

The party was already in full swing when substitute Nwaneri left Ortega for dead with a sublime curling finish after a long passing move.

Arsenal will now try to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit in Wednesday’s League Cup semi-final at Newcastle United.

While City will have to dust themselves down as a seismic Champions League playoff against Real Madrid looms.

UCL: Girona gave us the challenge we wanted – Arteta

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was pleased with the team’s comeback win against Girona in the Champions League.

Jorginho and Ethan Nwaneri scored to secure a fourth consecutive victory and a third-place finish.

Arteta was delighted with the squad rotation and the overall performance against tough opponents.

“That was exactly what we wanted, to finish winning and with a good taste,” he said.

“We talked about consistency and earning the right to win football matches, and I think today we deserved to win the game again. But it shows you how difficult it is to win in the Champions League. We knew coming here we were going to have to suffer at times, and we’ve done it. I think attacking we produced a lot today and I’m very happy overall.

“We managed to give games to players that deserve it, for example Neto, and we have been able to give some minutes to certain players that really needed it, and rest some others. There’s no injuries and a good result, so very positive all round.”

  • UCL: Why we must win against Arsenal – Girona coach

UCL: Why we must win against Arsenal – Girona coach

Girona coach Michel says they’re determined to sign off from the Champions League in the right way.

Girona host Arsenal in their final group game tomorrow night, with the Catalans already eliminated from the competition.

Michel insists it is crucual they offer the right “image” as they end a first ever Champions League campaign.

    The match:

“There are many objectives to achieve tomorrow. The main one is that it is a Champions League match in front of our fans and we want to win after three consecutive defeats. The image is important and we want to maintain our prestige. We deserve to be in this competition because of our great last year and we must not forget that. In addition, a fifth place for a Spanish team in the tournament is still alive and we must fight for it. We have to win for the competition and our fans.”

    Looking back:

“I have enjoyed this competition and as a club we must be able, perhaps not to return to the Champions League, but to repeat in Europe. It has come early for us, we accelerated a lot last year but the growth is there and the line is good.”

    Setting the game:

“There are things at stake, but we must not motivate the players. We are competing against a big team and you cannot let any opportunity pass you by. Winning in the Champions League gives you prestige and there is always something to fight for.”

    Change something?

“If I could do it… I remember that at the beginning of the season we were not in a position to face three competitions due to many circumstances. It was not possible to train with the whole squad at the beginning of the season and then without time it was difficult for us to have available players and do quality training sessions.”

    Learning:

“In top competition you have to train the small details, in the Champions League and in the league. I have to teach the player that one metre is key to attacking and defending. And top rivals that metre… kill you. And it happens to us in both competitions.”

    Goalkeeping:

“Pau López will play. After what happened at the beginning of January, he has trained well. I am calm about him, I hope Gazzaniga is not out for too many days and we have signed Vladyslav Krapyvtsov.”

    The bad run:

“You learn a lot from defeats, but you don’t like them. We did a lot of things wrong and we can improve our game. We haven’t been able to impose our style in some games, but Arsenal always imposes it.”

    Mercado:

“I am not into that. If someone comes, it has to be to grow the club and not because of losing three games. I have already said that the squad has a good level and I have to get more out of it. Something will be done if it has to improve the future and the growth of the club.”

    Girona against the best:

“It can give us confidence, the fact of being able to compete against the big teams, but we have to refine those details to be closer to victory.”

    You haven’t enjoyed it?

“From the inside, we have enjoyed the experience and we have always competed at 100%. The players have too. The fans have experienced situations that have not been the best, but I have already said that it has come too soon as a club. We are growing but we don’t have a stadium for everyone to be in, hopefully that will change soon, but I have images from Milan or Paris where people were enjoying themselves.”

  • Arsenal defeat Wolves after Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card

Arsenal defeat Wolves after Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card

Riccardo Calafiori fired 10-man Arsenal to a Premier League win at Wolves after Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card.

Referee Michael Oliver’s first-half decision to send off Lewis-Skelly – after he fouled Matt Doherty 30 yards from the hosts’ goal to stop the Wolves defender breaking from a corner – stunned the Gunners.

At 18 years and 121 days, Lewis-Skelly became the third youngest player to be sent off in the Premier League, behind Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen.

Joao Gomes’ dismissal, for a second yellow card after a foul on Jurrien Timber with 20 minutes left, was more routine but it will be no more than a footnote.

Lewis-Skelly’s red could have had an immediate impact on the title race if the second-placed Gunners dropped points to fall further behind leaders Liverpool, who beat Ipswich 4-1.

But they showed resilience to snatch the victory thanks to Calafiori, on as a substitute following a half-time reshuffle.

The defender’s fine low finish with 16 minutes left kept the Gunners six points adrift of Liverpool.

Myles-Skelly’s 43rd-minute red ignited what had been a forgettable game, with the only early talking point Wolves fans’ chants against owners Fosun, calling on them to “back the team or sell the club” with their side 17th in the table.

Pablo Sarabia volleyed over and Kai Havertz nodded wide before he was denied by Jose Sa.

Havertz again went close after the break with Matheus Cunha threatening twice before Calafiori pounced.
