EPL: Arteta frustrated as Newcastle defeat Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was disheartened with how his team performed in a 1-0 loss to Newcastle on Saturday in a potential blow to their Premier League title chase.

The gaffer decried the fact that they were  sucked into playing Newcastle’s style of game.

Alexander Isak headed home in the 12th minute in Newcastle’s first win in six league games, leaving Arsenal provisionally third in the Premier League table behind Manchester City and Liverpool, who were both playing later on Saturday.

Arteta’s side generated few chances on an afternoon that marked the first time since May 2022 that they had lost two consecutive away league matches. They were shocked 2-0 by Bournemouth on Oct. 19.

“We deserved to lose today,” Arteta told Premier League Productions. “I thought we started really well and were really dominant. We didn’t defend the box well enough. Credit to them. They scored a great goal with a good ball.

“Then the game changes and you start to play a different game. You have to adapt and we didn’t do that well enough. I am very frustrated.

“We got dragged into a game they are looking for constantly and we couldn’t play the game that we wanted.”

Newcastle defender Lewis Hall threw his body in front of Arsenal’s lone shot on target, blocking Mikel Merino’s volley from close range in the first half.

Declan Rice squandered a terrific chance in injury time, latching on to a cross but firing it wide of the net.

“We had two big chances — Mikel had a big one, Declan had a big one. We lacked answers,” Arteta said.

His squad are winless in their last three Premier League matches.

“We can say whatever we want. We will struggle to find the words today. We have to show it on the pitch on Wednesday night (against Inter Milan in a Champions League match).

“You have to be at your best every time to give yourself a chance to win”.

EPL: Salah earns Liverpool draw at Arsenal

Arsenal drew 2-2 with Liverpool at the Emirates on Sunday night in a tense clash at the top of the Premier League.

The Gunners made the perfect start to a vitally important match as Bukayo Saka latched on to Ben White’s long ball before cutting inside Andy Robertson and rifling a high effort past Kelleher at the near post.

Liverpool were soon back on level terms as Virgil van Dijk nodded in from Alexander-Arnold’s set-piece, but from there Arsenal dominated the rest of the opening 45 minutes, and were ahead once more as Mikel Merino powered a header in from Declan rice’s free-kick.

The second half started with bad news for Arsenal, as Gabriel was forced off with injury. It was then the away side’s turn to dominate, and their attacking paid off as Alexander-Arnold played a lovely pass into the path of Darwin Nunez, who squared it to Mohamed Salah to net the equaliser.

That goal set up a tense finish in north London, and the spoils were shared after an intriguing early season match-up at the top of the table.

  • Arsenal defender set to miss Liverpool clash

Arsenal defender set to miss Liverpool clash

Arsenal star Riccardo Calafiori looks set to miss their weekend clash with Liverpool.

The Italian international will not be fit in time for the Premier League contest on Sunday.

The 22-year-old had to come off during a 1-0 Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

Calafiori underwent scans on Wednesday, per The Mirror, which revealed a slight injury.

He will be absent for around three weeks, as there is small damage to his medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

However, he does not have a serious knee injury, which would have been a fear for the club.

Arsenal set to launch £75m bid for Aston Villa striker

Arsenal are preparing a huge move for Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran with a bid that could reach well over £75m as manager Mikel Arteta looks to steal away the forward from their Premier League rivals.

Gunners forwards Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus failed to make an impact on Saturday as Arsenal were beaten 2-0 by Bournemouth in a shock result that ended the club’s unbeaten streak and put a dent in their title hopes.

The pair also drew a blank against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday night.

According to AS, Arsenal are eyeing up the prospect of adding another No9 to their ranks with Duran being their top candidate due to his impressive form that has led him to 7 goals in just 12 appearances.

The 20-year-old recently signed a new contract to keep him at Villa until June 2030, but he has limited minutes under manager Unai Emery, who has preferred to use him as an impact substitute rather than a starting forward.

AS reports that Villa will accept “no less than” £75m for the Colombian forward which would make Duran the second-most expensive player in Arsenal’s history, behind the £105m they spent on Declan Rice from West Ham United in 2023.

  • UCL: Scrappy Arsenal edge 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk

UCL: Scrappy Arsenal edge 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk

Arsenal needed an own goal to seal a scrappy 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday as they made it two wins out of three in the Champions League.

The win is is coming after the blow of their first domestic league defeat of the season at the weekend.

The hosts missed a penalty in the second half and squandered a number of decent chances, but the reality was they never found top gear and had to withstand some late pressure from their Ukrainian opponents.

Arsenal, who were beaten 2-0 by Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday, made a fast start with Brazilians Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus both having good opportunities before a fortunate opener in the 29th minute.

A low shot from Martinelli rebounded off the post and off the back of Shakhtar keeper Dmytro Riznyk for what turned out to be the only goal of the game.

Arsenal would have doubled their advantage before halftime were it not for Shakhtar captain Mykola Matviyenko who hooked the ball off the line to prevent a diving Kai Havertz nodding in.

Leandro Trossard also missed a second-half penalty awarded by VAR following a handball in the box.

“We had four big, big chances (in the first half). We should have converted them and put the game to bed,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told reporters after the game.

The second half was difficult he added. “We looked tired and lacked sharpness with and without the ball.”

Shakhtar, who are yet to win in the Champions League this season, put more pressure on Arsenal after the interval.

The Ukrainian side went close to equalising, when substitute Pedrinho had a long-range effort superbly saved by Arsenal keeper David Raya in stoppage time.

“I think we deserved an equaliser” Shakhtar coach Marino Pusic told reporters. “We were chasing for an equaliser till the end of the game… we did our best”.

Victory lifts Arsenal provisionally into the top four of the new 36-team league phase before Wednesday’s fixtures with their next match away at Inter Milan.

Shakhtar will seek to bounce back in their next match at home to Swiss side Young Boys.

Calafiori warns Arsenal teammate ahead of Italy, Belgium clash

Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori has told Leandro Trossard to watch out this week.

The two club teammates are taking on each other at the Stadio Olimpico as Italy play Belgium.

Both teams are hoping they can win the Nations League, with Italy currently top of Group A2 with six points.

Calafiori stated: “I told him to watch out!

“Joking aside, he is a great player and also a great friend, but I will still try to take home the three points. It is going to be a complicated match, they have strong players, as do we.

“I prefer to focus on ourselves, because if we play the way we know how, then we can cause problems for any opponent. We did so well in the last two games and don’t want to stop now.”

  • Why we signed Calafiori – Arsenal manager, Arteta

Why we signed Calafiori – Arsenal manager, Arteta

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was delighted with Riccardo Calafiori’s performance in victory over PSG.

Arteta was happy with the defender’s show of mobility during the 2-0 Champions League win.

He said afterwards: “He has the capacity to occupy different spaces really comfortably. He has already done that in Italy. That’s why we signed him.

“First of all he’s a great defender, he’s got his presence, his energy and his full commitment. And then he’s really brave. He doesn’t care, in any situation he wants the ball, he wants to make things happen with it and he’s happy to play in different roles.”

On the win, Arteta added: “I sensed something different yesterday as well in the way we were preparing the game and how they wanted the level of focus. I think they wanted to prove a point tonight as well, against a top team at home we can be ourselves and we can be very dominant as well. We have to continue to do that. “

  • Odegaard the perfect captain for Arsenal – Havertz

Odegaard the perfect captain for Arsenal – Havertz

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz has declared Martin Odegaard the “perfect” captain for the North London club.

Odegaard is working his way back from ankle injury.

Havertz told Sky Sports: “I don’t know how long he is injured now, maybe two weeks, but every day, he’s here every day, he’s in the meetings and speaks to us.

“Yeah I think, I think he is the perfect captain for a team like us where we have like so many young players and still the players who can progress, and he is just there for everyone and not only off the pitch.

“To be honest when I came, before I came to Arsenal, I didn’t think he would speak so much like in the dressing room and stuff like that. But he speaks a lot and in the dressing room before the game, stuff like that, and he is also always there on the pitch. You know, when the things are not going your way, you need someone to step up.”

He added: “I think everyone has to step up when one of your most important players is missing and I think we do it quite well at the moment, we have some players um they now speak a lot in the dressing room, that helps.

“So, yeah we hope obviously Martin comes back very quickly but um yeah we have to do our job when he’s not there.”
