Gabriel strikes as Arsenal win North London derby

Arsenal came out on top in a fiery north London derby as Gabriel’s second-half header gave them a crucial victory at Tottenham.

The Gunners were without captain Martin Odegaard and key midfielder Declan Rice through injury and suspension respectively and survived a stern examination from Ange Postecoglou’s side to spark ecstatic scenes at the final whistle.

Arsenal keeper David Raya excelled in the early stages to keep Spurs at bay with fine saves from Dejan Kulusevski while Spurs opposite number Guglielmo Vicario had to be at his best to keep out Kai Havertz’s header.

Tempers boiled over late in the first half as players from both sides clashed following Jurien Timber’s challenge on Pedro Porro, setting the stage for a tense second period.

And it was Gabriel who made the vital contribution after 64 minutes, escaping the attentions of Cristian Romero to rise and power Bukako Saka’s corner high past Vicario.

Arsenal always relish any derby victory at Spurs but this one will taste especially sweet as it was achieved without two such significant figures in Odegaard and Rice while providing the perfect platform for next weekend’s visit to champions Manchester City.

“I leave that to the doctor. He’s willing and he wants to be present in every game. We need to make sure we know first how good he is or not.

“Players with 48 hours are always available. Let’s see what happens.”

Beginning with making David Raya a permanent transfer back in early July, Arsenal signed young goalkeeper Tommy Setford and defender Riccardo Calafiori, before bringing in Spain midfielder Mikel Merino earlier this week.

Neto also arrived at Arsenal from Bournemouth on loan as Raheem Sterling.

In the same window, Emile Smith Rowe, Aaron Ramsdale and Eddie Nketiah all left the club permanently, while several others departed on loan.

EPL: Arsenal beat Aston Villa 2-0 at Villa park

Arsenal overcame a stern test from their long-time nemesis Aston Villa to secure a significant victory in a thrilling match at Villa Park.

In a game defined by the performances of the two goalkeepers, Arsenal’s David Raya made an incredible second-half save to deny Ollie Watkins with the score still level, while Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez committed a costly error, allowing Thomas Partey’s shot to slip through his hands and give the Gunners a crucial two-goal lead.

Arsenal held on despite Watkins missing a golden opportunity to put Villa ahead in the first half.

The turning point came after the break when Raya made a remarkable one-handed save from Watkins, after Amadou Onana’s shot had rebounded off the bar.

Mikel Arteta’s team capitalized on their momentum, taking the lead in the 67th minute when substitute Leandro Trossard, on the pitch for just moments, coolly finished past Martinez.

Partey then doubled Arsenal’s advantage 10 minutes later, sealing a victory that was particularly satisfying after Villa’s league double dented their title hopes last season.
