EPL: What Wenger told me about winning the EPL in a tight race – Arteta

Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal football club has opened up on what the club’s legendary boss, Arsene Wenger, told him about the Premier League title.

Arteta has been tapping into Wenger’s style and wealth of wisdom as the season enters an end.

The Spaniard has now revealed that he’s been watching Wenger’s tape on how he won a title when it was very tight during his own days.

Recall that Wenger is the last Gunners manager to win the title in the 2003/2004 season.

The Invincibles claimed the crown 20 years ago this week at the old White Hart Lane.

Now, Arteta takes his table-topping side to the Tottenham Stadium on Sunday and needs a win in the North London derby, to maintain the momentum in their title charge.

“I have spoken to him (Wenger) a few times.

“There were certain topics about how they won it and the later stages. He used to talk about that when I was a player. It is always there in the hard drive.

“For this time of the season, at the end it is about finding a way to win the game. And that is it. You can do it in various ways when you look at how they won the titles.

“And how they won certain games with very very, very close margins. He always talked about that, about the fine margins. And who is going to step up on the occasion to make it happen,” Arteta told reporters.

‘Don’t let your wife decide where you go’ – Petit regrets leaving Arsenal

Former Arsenal midfielder, Emmanuel Petit has admitted that he regrets leaving the North London club due to the wishes of his wife, Agatha de la Fontaine.

Petit made 115 appearances for Arsenal between 1997 and 2000.

Petit eventually left Arsenal in 2001 to join Barcelona.

Speaking about his exit from Arsenal, Petit said (via Daily Star): “I was very happy at Arsenal, with the fans and my teammates. I played well and we won the Double. But I could feel that Arsene [Wenger] was thinking of selling me.

“Maybe he wanted to sign other players, and he got it right in the end because they were invincible in the Premier League. But the main reason I decided to leave was my wife. Sure, there were sporting reasons – I wanted to win the Champions League – but my wife was tired of the rain and wanted to live in the sun, so I listened to her.

“If I have any advice for players now, it’s: ‘Don’t let your wife decide where you go.’”

Why Mane punched Sane – Arsene Wenger

Former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has revealed why Senegal and Bayern forward, Mane punched teammate Sane after last week’s first leg tie with Manchester City.

According to Wenger,  a breakdown in “communication” and “trust” led to Sadio Mane punching Leroy Sane in a dressing room bust-up.

Mane hit his team-mate in the face after Bayern Munich’s 3-0 defeat to City in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Etihad last week.

The Senegal forward was then dropped for their 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga and fined more than £250,000.

“You have to create trust and communication inside the dressing room.

“Most of the time when you have this problem with two players, you take them into the office and you explain to them that ‘we cannot be successful if the players inside the team do not cooperate well together’,” Wenger said on beINSPORT.

Finally, Arsene Wenger speaks on Arsenal chances to win EPL

Former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has broken his silence regarding the club, and backed Mikel Arteta’s team to challenge for the league.

The Frenchman has been notoriously silent about the club’s fortunes since he was moved on from the job in 2018 for Unai Emery.

Speaking about the job Arteta has done, 72-year-old Wenger said: “I would say they are moving in the right direction.

“I honestly think there is no weak position in the team… they are young, promising players and they have bought well this year.

“There is no completely dominating team this season and Arsenal has a chance with the potential that is there.

“We used to be in the top four and why not again? You cannot even rule out the fact that they can fight for the title and hopefully they can do it.”

Southgate rubbishes Arsene Wenger’s World Cup plans

England manager Gareth Southgate says Arsene Wenger’s plans for a biennial World Cup make no sense.

FIFA over shifting the showpiece competition from its current quadrennial cycle into a biennial format, a move promoted by Wenger.

“I’m not quite sure where everything is, “Southgate said ahead of his side’s clash with Hungary. “I saw some initial proposals, they seem to be doing the rounds, and I’m not quite sure exactly what’s on the table now.

“It seems to change every time I speak to [CEO] Mark Bullingham and the [English] FA. There’s been another presentation and another set of proposals, it’s hard to keep up with really.

“All I would say is everybody needs to be there, in the discussion, club football, international football, I think I’ve said before there can be tweaks to the calendar that would help everybody.

“If there were maybe slightly fewer windows but you get players together for a longer period of time, that might help the clubs and the international teams.

“But if there’s only one per year, I don’t really understand that as a concept from FIFA when international football is such an important part of what you do.

“As I said at the start if you’re a player and you miss that one month or however long a break’s supposed to be, you don’t have an international career at all that year. That doesn’t seem to make sense to me.”

Speaking with the Telegraph, Wenger has declared he hasn’t ruled out a return to the dugout.

The legendary Frenchman remarked: “Overall we have to accept that our days come to an end at some stage.

“I don’t rule it out, but I am completely focused (on Fifa) and I don’t worry too much about the rest.

“There are always people who say ‘You are too old’ so at the time, maybe I thought they were right.

“But I am in good shape and I have not completely decided not to do it anymore.”

  • UCL final: How Tuchel outsmarted Guardiola – Wenger

UCL final: How Tuchel outsmarted Guardiola – Wenger

Former manager of Arsenal football club, Arsene Wenger has revealed what Chelsea’s manager, Thomas Tuchel did to outsmart Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday.

Chelsea won their second Champions League title since 2012 thanks to a Kai Havertz’s goal.

Wenger in his post-match analysis explained how Tuchel managed to outsmart Guardiola to claim his first European title.

“I must say as well, what Tuchel did well was play Mount and Havertz more inside defensively, so City could never find a way through the middle and they had to go wide, where Chelsea were quite strong.

“So Man City had a big tactical problem that they could never sort out. They were not balanced, they didn’t find a way to play incisive football and Chelsea stopped them very well.”

Wenger also stated that recent results – Chelsea beating City 1-0 in the FA Cup semi-final and 2-1 in the Premier League – left City ‘insecure’ ahead of the Champions League final.

He added: “Guardiola has just been voted manager of the year in England, because he won the (Premier League) championship and dominated, but a final is only one game and that’s where you have to turn up and play at your best.

“For Manchester City, that was not the case. They lost three games against Chelsea before. That strengthened Chelsea’s belief, and certainly made Man City a bit insecure.

“We never know exactly what traces that defeats leave in our mind, but it shows that Chelsea were convinced they could beat them”.

How Arsene Wenger left me in tears – Hleb

Aleksandr Hleb has recalled how a text from former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger left him in tears.

Hleb joined the Gunners from Stuttgart in 2005, playing the best football of his career for Wenger’s side before earning a move to Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona in 2008.

“It’s still difficult for me to explain why I left Arsenal,” Hleb said, quoted by Planet Football. “I was absolutely happy there. Arsene completely trusted me, it was idyllic. And then I decided to leave.

“I was on vacation and agents and managers convinced me that I had to go to Barcelona. To be honest, I didn’t really understand what I was doing. At some point, I realised, ‘Oh God! I’m leaving Arsenal!’

“When Arsene said that it was a matter of hours, I felt devastated. It was really hard for me to accept that. Wenger did everything to make me stay at Arsenal.

“He even texted me as I was fishing. ‘Alex, I won’t let you go, we need you here.’ I cried when I read it.”
