Arteta gives worrying injury updates on Saka, Odegaard

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has provided a concerning update on Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard following their 5-0 Premier League win over Leeds on Saturday.

Odegaard, 26, was the first to go off, replaced by wonderkid Ethan Nwaneri in the 38th minute due to an apparent shoulder problem.

The 23-year-old limped off on the 53rd minute of Arsenal’s convincing win over newly promoted Leeds having scored their second goal.

Thankfully for the two players, their teammates were able to get the job done in their absence, taking the North London club to the top of the Premier League.

Speaking to the press after the game, Arteta kept his cards close to his chest, saying: “Martin looked like a shoulder. We’ll have a scan tomorrow so we’ll see.

“Bukayo had to come off when he was sprinting with a defender, he felt a hamstring, a different one (than last season). We’ll have to speak to the doctors.

“We lost Kai, which is a massive player and now Bukayo and Martin, that’s why the squad has to be big.”

Mikel Arteta explains £52m Madueke signing

Mikel Arteta has praised the qualities of Noni Madueke after Arsenal completed his £52m signing from Chelsea.

The England international signed a five-year contract with the Gunners, officially confirmed on Friday and will vie for a place on the wings alongside Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

The club also announced that the 23-year-old will don the No. 20 shirt at the Emirates Stadium.

“We’re all so happy to welcome Noni Madueke to the team. Noni is an exciting and powerful young player, with his performances and numbers in recent seasons being of consistently high quality. He is one of the most talented wide forward players in the Premier League,” Arteta told Arsenal meda.

“At just 23, Noni already brings experience of club and international football, and he knows the Premier League very well. Having seen the quality of Noni’s performances up close in recent seasons, we’re really excited he is joining us.

“Noni joins our group with familiar England teammates and other players he knows. He will be made to feel at home straight away. His arrival will really improve our squad – we’re all thrilled to have him here. From all of us, welcome Noni and welcome to your family.”

  • Merino equals Arteta, Aubameyang, Wright’s unwanted Arsenal Record

Merino equals Arteta, Aubameyang, Wright’s unwanted Arsenal Record

Mikel Merino has etched his name in an unwanted Arsenal record following his red card in Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

The Spaniard was sent off for a reckless tackle against Reds. The referee initially issued a yellow card, but after reviewing the incident on VAR, the decision was upgraded to a red for serious foul play.

In the process he became the fourth player for the Gunners to both score and be sent off in the same game in the competition.

Others to achieve this were Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January 2020 against Crystal Palace, Mikel Arteta in October 2013 against Crystal Palace and Ian Wright in December 1996 against Nottingham Forest.

Merino’s red card was Arsenal’s sixth in the Premier League this season, only receiving more in the competition in 1998-99 season.

  • UCL: What Arteta, Arsenal learned from loss to PSG

UCL: What Arteta, Arsenal learned from loss to PSG

Arsenal were beaten 1-0 by Paris St-Germain in the Champions League semi-final first leg at Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s side had good chances through Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard but could not find a goal to level the match.

Here, we look at what was learned from the match.

    Arsenal miss Partey

The biggest challenge for Arteta coming into this match was how he was going to set up in the absence of suspended midfielder Thomas Partey.

The 31-year-old is a key part of the Gunners midfield and picked up a cheap yellow card in the final few minutes of the match with Real Madrid in the quarter-final which meant he missed this game.

With the injuries Arsenal have and with Mikel Merino playing as a central striker in recent weeks, Partey’s absence caused Arteta to shuffle his team around.

Merino dropped into his natural midfield position, Declan Rice moved deeper to a number six role and away from the number eight role in which he produced two player-of-the-match performances against Real Madrid. Trossard came in as striker.

PSG were dominant from the start of the match and had 75% possession in the opening 15 minutes, taking the lead in the fourth minute with an Ousmane Dembele strike.

Dembele so often drifted into the space between Arsenal’s backline and their midfield, and PSG scored the opening goal when he made that movement.

The question Arteta will be asking is – if Partey had been in the team, would he have been able to stop Dembele receiving the ball before giving PSG the lead?

Partey has been in excellent form in recent weeks and will be crucial to the Gunners next week if they are to overturn the defeat and progress to the final.

Kvaratskhelia and Timber – a key battle

Paris St-Germain’s quality would not have come as a surprise to Arsenal or Arteta.

The French side have knocked out two Premier League sides in Aston Villa and Liverpool to reach this point and beat Manchester City in the league phase of the competition.

However, when Arsenal played and beat PSG in the group stage in October they did not have Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who signed for the club in January for a reported 70m euros (£59m) plus add-ons.

Jurrien Timber has arguably been Arsenal’s player of the season because of his consistency, quality going forward and his ability to play anywhere across the backline.

But the Netherlands international had a tricky first half up against the PSG left winger.

Kvaratskhelia got the assist for the goal, driving into the box and pulling the ball back for Dembele to guide into the net from the edge of the box.

The Georgian was direct every time he recieved the ball and Bukayo Saka came back to help Timber defend as Arsenal looked to double up on him.

Timber looked more comfortable in the second half when Arsenal were able to have more possession and he was able to get forward more himself.

But, it is the first time in a long time that an attacker has caused the Arsenal defender such problems.

‘If we don’t have the ball, we die’ – Rice

Those were the words of midfielder Rice in the Arsenal pre-match huddle that were picked up by the TV cameras.

The fear that Arsenal would not have the ball played out as the hosts failed to get control in the match, with the away side dominating the ball for large parts of the first half.

Arsenal did get a foothold in the game in the second period and PSG, despite their fast start, finished the match on 52% possession.

Mikel Arteta said that it is “impossible” to control PSG for 95 minutes and that it was the “small margins” in the game that did not allow his team to pick up a positive result.

“I mean, this is one of the best, beating all the English teams, the best teams in this country,” Arteta said.

“So, you cannot dominate this team in 95 minutes. Impossible. Forget about it.

“And you have to understand what it means dominating them and in which area of the pitch.”

    ‘The margins were small’

It’s only half-time in the tie and Arteta says his side will approach the second leg the same way they did when going to Madrid with a 3-0 lead in the last round.

“We have to go to Paris and win the game,” he added. “We are more than capable of doing it.

“I saw two very good teams, but the margins are so small. They had efficiency in front of the goal. The keeper as well made a difference to see the result that we’ve seen tonight.

“I don’t know the percentage, but we have a lot of chances to be in that final. You have to do something special in the competition to have the right to be in the final. And the time to do it is going to be in Paris.”

Luis Enrique expects PSG to ‘suffer’

Donnarumma may have made two smart saves to keep Arsenal out but PSG also had chances to put the tie beyond the Gunners.

First Bradley Barcola pulled an effort wide and then Goncalo Ramos hit the crossbar late on.

And PSG boss Luis Enrique expects his side to “suffer” in Paris without that cushion.

“I think emotions are at that level in those kind of matches so it’s difficult to analyse,” he said. “Great atmosphere but we showed the kind of team we are.

“We tried to play our way and scored the goal early playing the way we play. We suffered sometimes but could have scored the second goal. The second match is going to be very tough.

“We need to prepare for the second match, it’s going to be difficult. The result means a little advantage for us. We are going to suffer, we know that. I think we can go to the final but there is still one match.”

  • Arteta speaks on Saka’s injury after Ipswich win

Arteta speaks on Saka’s injury after Ipswich win

Bukayo Saka’s ankle injury is “nothing serious” after he was forced off during Arsenal’s 4-0 Premier League win at Ipswich on Sunday, manager Mikel Arteta said.

The winger was injured by a high challenge on the back of his ankle in the 32nd minute by Leif Davis, who was sent off.

England international Saka was substituted early in the second half and was pictured with strapping on his ankle.

Arteta said the winger was “sore” – but added that the decision to take him off was just a precaution, with Arsenal facing the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Paris St-Germain on 29 April.

“He was a bit sore, but it’s nothing serious, so it’s good,” Arteta said.

“I haven’t seen the slow motion, I’ve just seen the normal pace image and yeah, he cuts him from the back.

“I don’t think it’s intentional at all, but it’s dangerous because he cannot really react to anything, because you cannot see him coming.”

Arsenal have suffered an injury-hit campaign, with Saka, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus all absent for long periods.

And Arteta acknowledged that because of that, he does get concerned when he sees one of his players struggling during a match.

“I do,” he said, “especially with the numbers that we have right now and especially when they are back to goal, because normally it’s the moment when the foot is planted, your weight is there, and you cannot really react to it, but he’s fine.”

  • EPL: Arteta slams controversial Arsenal penalty decision

EPL: Arteta slams controversial Arsenal penalty decision

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has said there was ‘no way’ Everton should have been awarded a penalty in their 1-1 Premier League draw on Saturday.

Referee Darren England awarded the home side a penalty after Myles Lewis-Skelly had a coming together with Everton winger Jack Harrison in the Arsenal box.

Iliman Ndiaye stepped up and slotted past David Raya to level the score and further dent Arsenal’s fading Premier League title hopes.

Arteta was left furious with the decision, saying there is ‘no way’ Lewis-Skelly’s challenge was worthy of conceding a penalty.

Speaking to the press after the game, Arteta said: “The referee decides to give a penalty that changes the course of the game.

“I’m here to give my opinion and, after seeing it 15 times, there is no way in my opinion that is a penalty because if it is then (Jake) O’Brien has to be out, and Everton have to play with 10 men. That’s clear.”

  • Arteta explains Arsenal letting Obi move to Man Utd

Arteta explains Arsenal letting Obi move to Man Utd

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has explained the situation around losing teenage striker Chido Obi to Manchester United last year.

Obi rejected pro terms at Arsenal after spending several years inside the academy ahead of leaving for United. The 17-year-old has since made three senior appearances for United.

“Obviously, when a player decides that the best pathway for him is to leave, there’s not much you can do,” said Arteta.

“Very unfortunate because we want to keep our players from the academy and to be very successful with the first team. But in that case, with Ayden (Heaven), we weren’t able to do that.

“To persuade a player to stay a player has to be willing to be with us and commit to us and I don’t know specifically, both parties will feel very different about it.

“The reality is that he has decided to move and we have moved on from that.”

Asked about Obi’s qualities, he said: ‘‘Massive goal threat, an attitude and love to be inside the box and a capacity to score in many different ways. That was him.”

  • Transfer: Arteta disappointed by Arsenal’s winter market

Transfer: Arteta disappointed by Arsenal’s winter market

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits he was left “disappointed” by their winter market campaign.

The Gunners failed to add to Arteta’s squad, with a striker said to have been a priority.

The window was Arsenal’s first since Edu’s resignation as technical director.

“We had a clear intention which is always when a window opens to explore the opportunities to improve our squad with players that can make an impact,” Arteta said before Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at Newcastle on Wednesday.

“With players injured, we’ve been impacted and we haven’t achieved it.

“We are disappointed in that sense but as well we are very aware that we only want to bring certain kinds of players and we have to be very disciplined with that as well. I think that we were.

“It’s in the profile, a player that we believe can make us much better. Financially there is a lot of ways, a lot of things that we must stay in the lane that has taken us this far and from there try to improve.”

  • Don’t ask me about Haaland taunts – Arteta

Don’t ask me about Haaland taunts – Arteta

The father of Erling Haaland hit back at taunting Arsenal players after Manchester City’s 5-1 humbling on Sunday.

Myles Lewis-Skelly copied Haaland’s goal celebration after scoring for the Gunners, while Gabriel Magalhaes laughed in the striker’s face after Martin Odegaard’s goal.

Arsenal’s players were reacting to Haaland’s taunting of manager Mikel Arteta at the end their 2-2 draw earlier this season.

“This Team that wins everything. Ehhhhh, not,” posted Alf-Inge Haaland on social media afterwards.

Asked about the two incidents, Arteta said afterwards: There’s nothing I want to discuss about that. That’s down to the players but they know my view on it and we have to focus on us.”

Pressed on what those views are, he added: “We have to focus on us and leave anything that happened, it’s part of the game, on the pitch. I have been in football a long time. Whatever happens, just leave it. There’s nothing there to do.”

  • UCL: Girona gave us the challenge we wanted – Arteta

UCL: Girona gave us the challenge we wanted – Arteta

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was pleased with the team’s comeback win against Girona in the Champions League.

Jorginho and Ethan Nwaneri scored to secure a fourth consecutive victory and a third-place finish.

Arteta was delighted with the squad rotation and the overall performance against tough opponents.

“That was exactly what we wanted, to finish winning and with a good taste,” he said.

“We talked about consistency and earning the right to win football matches, and I think today we deserved to win the game again. But it shows you how difficult it is to win in the Champions League. We knew coming here we were going to have to suffer at times, and we’ve done it. I think attacking we produced a lot today and I’m very happy overall.

“We managed to give games to players that deserve it, for example Neto, and we have been able to give some minutes to certain players that really needed it, and rest some others. There’s no injuries and a good result, so very positive all round.”
