Arsenal: Brother of Folarin Balogun hits out at Arteta

The brother of Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun has hit out at manager Mikel Arteta.

Balogun, 20, started the opening day defeat at Brentford and then came off the bench in the home loss to Chelsea.

He has not appeared since – and now his brother has claimed Arteta’s system ‘just doesn’t really work’ currently.

Royce Balogun told @whatthefootie: “You can’t blame just the player, it’s the system.

“If you look at that striker problem in terms of chances created, it’s not just Folarin.

“When Martinelli and Aubameyang were playing there, the system didn’t work.”

He added: “The system just doesn’t really work at the moment. Soon it will work and he’ll have to be ready when it does.

“You have to support him and tell him to keep going.”

  • Wenger optimistic about Gunners squad under Arteta

Wenger optimistic about Gunners squad under Arteta

Former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has said the club’s current boss, Mikel Arteta, has a “quality” squad.

Wenger, however, expressed sympathy over the Gunners’ difficult start to the new season.

Arsenal faced both the reigning European and Premier League champions in two of their first three fixtures.

Before Saturday’s narrow 1-0 win against Norwich City at the Emirates Stadium, Arteta’s side endured the club’s lowest point.

The north London club went into the international break with a record of three games played, with zero points, zero goals scored and nine goals conceded.

However, the victory over the Canaries lifted the Gunners off of the foot of the table and into 16th.

Wenger told beIN Sport: “First of all, I like to usually say what I think – I believe in this situation I am first an Arsenal fan, after that of course when I talk about Arsenal it is a very sensitive subject and at the moment the timing is maybe not the best to talk.

“I must say, I find the squad quite of quality, I’m not pessimistic because I feel they had two difficult games out of the first three.”

EPL: Arsenal earn first victory against Norwich

Arsenal lifted the pressure on manager Mikel Arteta as they secured their first points of the Premier League season with victory over Norwich City at Emirates Stadium.

Arteta was under mounting scrutiny after a miserable start to the campaign with three defeats that left the Gunners at the foot of the table, so a win that was workmanlike rather than spectacular will be gratefully received.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was back on target to set Arsenal on their way after 66 minutes, with a finish from almost on the goal-line after Canaries’ keeper Tim Krul turned Nicolas Pepe’s shot on to the post and the same player then struck the woodwork again.

Arsenal had an anxious moment as referee Michael Oliver conducted a VAR check for offside before the Emirates Stadium celebrate with a mixture of elation and relief.

I had to say goodbye with sadness for Bellerin exit – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed why he released fullback Hector Bellerin to Real Betis.

TheNewsGuru reports Bellerin is on a season-long loan with the La Liga side.

Arteta said: “He’s been here a long time and he’s been a really important part of everything that happened at the club in the last 10 years.

“He’s an exceptional player but an incredible person, and he will be missed. To find somebody like Hector is not easy. He’s been raised here with us and is loved by everyone at the football club.

“I have to say goodbye with sadness but at the same time, I had to understand his position. He needed a new challenge. He’s needed a new challenge for a while. After discussing it for a long time, we decided to let him go because we believe it was the right thing for him as well.”

  • We’ve changed almost 30 players in 2 years – Arteta

We’ve changed almost 30 players in 2 years – Arteta

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has defended his management amid a massive squad overhaul.

In the last year Arsenal have now brought in 10 new signings and sold or released 21 players.

Arteta said: “It is a completely different squad with those numbers, it is unheard of. Now we have to make it work. We have to glide it together, build relationships, chemistry, understanding. We have to adapt and do that really quickly.

“The amount of changes in two years is almost 30 players. We are all participating, trying to build this project, obviously led by the owners.

“It is a project we believe in and have to assemble, because we believe it is the best option for the future of the club. We all take responsibility. We are all involved in the decision. Now we have to make it work.

“The complexity in football is that you want to build a medium-to-long-term project, with immediate results. We have to embrace that. There is no other way in football.”

  • Allardyce would do better at Arsenal than Arteta – Cascarino

Allardyce would do better at Arsenal than Arteta – Cascarino

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes Sam Allardyce would do a better job at Arsenal than Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal have lost their opening three games for the season and are yet to score.

Cascarino said on talkSPORT: “If you look at what he did with West Brom – I know they went down – but he definitely made them better defensively.

“He would make Arsenal clearly better.

“I know that some Arsenal fans do not care about it, they want their team to have style, but I think Sam would undoubtedly do a better job than what Arteta is doing at the moment.”

  • I can help Arsenal as defensive coach – Sol Campbell

I can help Arsenal as defensive coach – Sol Campbell

Arsenal great Sol Campbell says he’d welcome the chance to return and coaching the defenders.

Campbell was one of Arsenal’s best defenders during a golden era for the club between 2001 and 2006.

He has gone on to have brief stints in management with Macclesfield and Southend, but he now believes his knowledge and experience could be put to best use in north London.

The 73-cap England international told talkSPORT: “I’d love to go there and help them out.

“There is a serious problem there and I’m happy to help, even if it’s a couple of days a week.

“The tricks of the trade and little things, there is a blind-spot there and I’d help them out all day long.

“It’s been happening a lot and it doesn’t matter who plays at the back, it seems to be the same type of occurrences.

“I think it’s a young team, there’s great footballers but I think they just need the know-how, the little nuggets of information that someone like me or someone else can give over to them.”

  • Arteta defends Arsenal summer signings

    Arteta defends Arsenal summer signings

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was delighted with the club’s summer transfer window.

The Gunners spent the most of any team in the Premier League, forking out £145m on Takehiro Tomiyasu, Ben White, Martin Odegaard, Aaron Ramsdale, Albert Lokonga and Nuno Tavares.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Arteta said: “It was a really complicated market. We had a lot of things to do, I think we had 16 or 17 transactions in total, which is a lot.

Asked whether Arsenal deliberately targeted younger players with experience in Europe’s major leagues, the Spaniard added: “Yes, different experiences, some had experience in the league, so abroad, and some have been coached in other ways, but they are players we have followed for a long time that we knew could fit in the model we are trying to implement at the club. So we are pleased.”

And when pressed on how he plans to integrate the signings, Arteta said: “Again, it is 16/17 changes to the squad – it is a lot. You have to blend them all together, some of them haven’t even trained with us yet because they have still to come in the next week or so.

“As quick as possible. We have a good group, they will help them to adapt as quick as possible and get them to work with us and see when we can integrate all together.”

  • Arteta blamed for Willian flop at Arsenal

Arteta blamed for Willian flop at Arsenal

Kia Joorabchian has hit out at Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta over his treatment of Willian.

The influential agent claimed that Willian had been presented with several presentations by Arteta on what his role would be within the team but this did not come to pass last season.

Willian this week terminated his deal, leaving behind £20million. He has now joined Corinthians.

Joorabchian explained on talkSPORT: “Yes, it (the numbers) is true, it’s mostly accurate. I’m not going to reveal numbers exactly, but the reports are pretty much accurate.

“He terminated his contract and he did it willingly, he’s probably one of the first players to do so.

“Previously players, especially at Arsenal, have sat their contracts out, but he wasn’t one of them.”

Arsenal boss Arteta reacts after Man City thrashing

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says the dismissal of Granit Xhaka was key to their collapse at Manchester City.

Xhaka was sent off in the first-half as City fired home five goals past the Gunners on Saturday.

Arteta said, “The first goal was the most disappointing, we were in control of the game, we took the game exactly where we wanted to.

“The first action they have, we fail to stop the cross and Gundogan has a free header in the middle of goal. If you want to in this stadium, these are the basics you have to do right.

“The second goal we concede is a clear foul because he punches Calum [Chambers] in the face. Once we conceded after the red card you know what is going to happen.

“It’s a really quick action from [Granit] Xhaka, he tries to get his feet off the ground and the ref decided it was a red card.”

On the approach in the second half, he continued: “I was concerned because mentally it is a relly tough one to take, after the third goal you are going to play 60 minutes with 10 men against the best team in the league.

“You can go down and you can start to see body languages and attitudes towards each other that can worry me, I didn’t see that.

“I have to say thank you the 3,000 fans, they were terrific. I think the players did well to go and thank that.”

On what needs to happen going forward, Arteta concluded: “For me it is pride and more willingness to change the situation. A lot happened in the las three weeks we are in a difficult position.

“The international break will do us some good to recover some of the big players we are missing at the moment and hopefully we come back we are in a better place.”
