No ‘Quick Fix’ For Arsenal – Arteta

Mikel Arteta said Arsenal knew there would be no “quick fix” after he arrived at the club as he scrambles for solutions following a disastrous start to the Premier League season.

The Gunners head into Saturday’s Premier League match at Everton languishing in 15th place in the table following a 1-1 draw against Southampton.

Arsenal’s winless league run now stretches to six matches, with the club enduring their worst start to a top-flight season since 1974/75.

The 13-time English champions have scored just 11 goals in their 13 league matches, fewer than all but three clubs.

But Arteta insisted on Friday the “project” was focused on the long term, with Sunday marking his one-year anniversary in charge at the Emirates.

The Spaniard said he had felt supported by the club hierarchy from the moment he took over following the departure of Unai Emery last December.

“At the end of the day, it is the feeling that I feel with the staff, with the coaching, with the players, which is the most important,” said the 38-year-old.

“It’s about what chemistry you have with them, what understanding they have. Do they follow you? Do they believe in what you are trying to do?”

Arteta said everybody at Arsenal was pulling in the same direction but finding stability would take time after a “big shake-up”.

“We all knew — at least the people who made the decision with me to start this new project — that this was not a quick fix and it was going to take time,” he said.

“When you are shaking things up, things can take a while.”

Arteta recovered from contracting coronavirus earlier this year to guide Arsenal to FA Cup glory, with victory over Chelsea at Wembley on August 1.

“We have made a lot of progress and implanted a lot of positive things that have worked really well,” said the former Arsenal and Everton midfielder.

But he said the club’s poor Premier League form had dampened the mood at the Emirates.

“I think it could have been a really, really positive year, but the recent form in the Premier League is taking the gloss off what we have done in the calendar year,” he added.

“But we have to accept that our Premier League form in recent weeks is not good enough for this football club.”

Arsenal boss Arteta proud of Southampton draw

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was proud of his players despite only managing a 1-1 draw against Southampton.

The Gunners were listless in the first half and were 0-1 down at the break.

They equalised through Pierre-Emerick Aubaymeyang, but then defender Gabriel got a red card after two yellows.

It meant they had to hold on at the end to maintain the result.

“Considering that we played again with 10 men for 35 minutes, after playing another 40/45 minutes three days before [with 10 men], you have to take the point,” Arteta told reporters.

“We needed a win. We play to win, we’re really disappointed with the way that we conceded the first goal but then the team reacted. Instead of getting down, the team reacted, we kept trying with more efficiency.

“We created some really good situations in the first half but we didn’t finish the action well enough. We came back really strong in the second half, we scored a really good goal and we kept going. When we had a [good] moment again, we shot ourselves in the foot and made things really complicated for ourselves.

“[At half time I told them] there is no time to feel sorry for ourselves. It is what it is. We have to stand up. We have to play with courage. We have to win the game and to do that we have to be brave and the players did that straight away.”

EPL: Arsenal must trust in Arteta, says Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has backed former assistant Mikel Arteta to turn Arsenal’s fortunes around in spite of the club’s dismal start to the season.

With 13 points from 12 Premier League games, Arsenal are off to their worst start to a campaign in almost 40 years and the pressure is building on Arteta, who was given the manager’s job last December after winning two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two League Cups under Guardiola at City.

“Arsenal don’t have a better manager that can lead this club in this year and the next,” Guardiola said ahead of City’s home game against West Bromwich Albion later on Tuesday.

“I don’t have to give publicly my support because he has it. He’s one of the best managers I’ve ever worked with and seen.

“I’m pretty sure he will turn things around and perform like everyone expects. When a club comes from not a good period, it needs time.

“If I was part of the board, I would not have any doubts about his capacity to put Arsenal in the place they deserve to be.”

Arsenal technical director Edu said Arteta was on the right track and predicted a bright future for the club, who have not won a league title since 2004.

“Mikel is doing a great job,” Edu said. “It’s normal and easy to be driven by results. But I can see the future, see where we go and the way we are building things on a daily basis.

“I can see a big and beautiful future. It’s very strange to say that in this moment, but I have to be fair – that’s the way I see it.”

Arteta warned Arsenal players: I’ll destroy the leaker

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is fed-up with leaks from his dressing room.

Football.London says Arteta told his team he would “destroy” the player who has allegedly been leaking inside information to the media.

The Gunners boss is under huge pressure following his side’s latest disappointing defeat, with the 1-0 loss against Burnley on Sunday meaning they have now won just one of their last eight Premier League games.

There are claims that Arteta has lost the support of some inside the dressing room, and unless their form turns around very soon his job could well be at risk.

And the Spaniard is determined to find the source behind recent leaks to the press and banish them from the team.

It’s claimed Arteta held an internal meeting with his squad in which he made it very clear the culprit would be dealt with in the strongest possible manner.

I studied Mourinho during Tottenham’s documentary – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admits he studied last season’s Tottenham documentary involving Jose Mourinho.

Arteta admitted the documentary demonstrated to him why Mourinho has been so successful throughout his career.

He said:”Very interesting. It is great to see the inside of other football clubs, other ideas, other coaches, other organisations.

“I like to see that – I do that with other sports as well because there are a lot of things you can take, and as well a manager like Mourinho that has been in many different countries, in all of them he has been successful so there is a why to that.

“There are some important moments in that documentary when you can pick some relevant things of why he is getting the success that he is getting.”

REVEALED: Mikel Arteta held ‘tense’ crisis talks with players

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta held crisis talks with his players on Tuesday.

The Daily Mail says Arteta held clear-the-air talks with his Arsenal squad on Tuesday in a bid to revive their season but the meeting ended in angry conversations.

The Gunners have endured their worst ever start to a Premier League season and lie in 14th place after ten games, with Arteta’s squad losing half of those matches.

ESPN says Arteta assembled his squad on Tuesday to address his team’s poor start as well as other issues, such as a further investigation as to how news of David Luiz and Dani Ceballos’ training ground bust-up was leaked.

The report also claims that after the Arsenal manager finished the meeting, he left the players to discuss their issues among themselves, which led to some finger-pointing and intense dialogues.

The reported intra-player conversation ended amicably, with the Gunners players rejuvenated following their talks which could explain their excellent performance in their 4-1 win over Rapid Vienna on Thursday night.

Arsenal have no excuses for 14th place – Bellerin

Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin says “results will come” for the Gunners and it is up to the players to “change this dynamic they are in”.

Sunday’s home defeat by Wolves condemned Arsenal to their worst start to a season since 1981, losing five of their 10 Premier League games.

They are 14th in the table, with Mikel Arteta set to mark a year in charge.

“We have no excuse. We were really upset and we take responsibility,” Bellerin told BBC Football Focus.

“We know what we want to do to win matches and if we don’t do it we know it is our responsibility because maybe on that game our attitude wasn’t right, or our positioning wasn’t right. This is something we have all agreed and it is important we all step up.”

Arteta admits Arsenal’s 39-year form shocker worrying

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta concedes their form is a concern.

Arsenal have made their worst start to a campaign since 1981 and Arteta says he is “worried” about his side’s results.

“A process has to be reviewed constantly,” said Arteta ahead of tomorrow’s Europa League tie with Rapid Vienna. “I was certain that we would have moment of adversity and they are necessary. The challenge is how you react to them.

“Do you become impatient? It takes time. This is not a month or three months. A lot of good decisions and a lot of support. When things are going well it’s easy but unfortunately, at the moment, we are not good.

“We can compete against any team. We have shown that in the last 12 months against the big teams.

“Everybody wants to be on the front page, at the front of the TV. But unfortunately, at the moment, we are not that good and the lines are really thin.”

  • We must help Aubameyang score goals – Arteta

We must help Aubameyang score goals – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes the burden of scoring cannot lie solely with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gabon striker has struggled to find the back of the net for the team this season.

Aubameyang is coming off signing a huge new contract in the summer, but has yet to deliver on the club’s investment in him so far.

And Arteta hopes the team can help Aubameyang start firing with better service to the 31-year-old striker.

He told reporters after their 2-1 loss to Wolves at home: “The main goalscorer of the club is not scoring goals and we need to help him score more goals.

“How important he’s been for the club in the past two years tells you how important he’s been for us if we want to be successful.”

  • Ljungberg to Arteta: Mesut Ozil should be playing

Ljungberg to Arteta: Mesut Ozil should be playing

Arsenal great Freddie Ljungberg believes Mesut Ozil should still be for the Gunners.

Ozil’s time at Arsenal appears to be up, with his contract expiring at the end of the season, and not being registered for the Premier League nor Europa League.

But Ljungberg told the Athletic: “Mesut is a great football player, we know that. We all have different opinions and everybody needs to accept that people have different opinions.

“For me, maybe the way football has gone now sometimes he’s not as athletic defensively. Let’s say when you play Man City you don’t have the ball and need to just run after them, maybe you need more athletic players.

“What I tried to do, what I believed in, was that when you play teams who, on paper, you’re a bigger club than or you think they’ll have a low block and you need someone to unlock it, Mesut has the total quality to do that. I think there is a space for a player like that in those kinds of games.

“But then as well you need to have a communication with the player — not just Mesut, every player. Different games suit certain players and other games suit others.

“The days of playing every single minute of every game maybe are just not happening that often anymore. When I left in the summer he was in the squads and now he’s not. What’s happened there, I can’t answer.

“I don’t know if something else has happened, I have no clue. But if you look at pure football qualities, I think my answer is quite obvious.

“When I was interim coach, I would play him in the games when I thought he could unlock defences, even if I knew his defensive job was not as good as some other players.

“So that’s my opinion; there should be a space in certain games.”
