Arteta reacts to Eriksen chance of joining Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta refused to be drawn on speculation linking the club with Christian Eriksen.

The Danish playmaker is unhappy at Inter Milan and the Italian giants are happy to part ways.

One team in need of creativity is the Gunners, who have struggled in front of goals recently.

Despite his past with Tottenham, Eriksen has been touted as the perfect player for Arteta’s side.

Asked about any interest in the 28-year-old, Arteta replied: “There are a lot of players out there that could improve any team.

“But obviously we are not going to discuss any individuals.”

Eriksen has scored four goals in 33 appearances for Inter.

Fabregas defends Arteta over Arsenal sack calls

Former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas has defended manager Mikel Arteta after his spell in charge of the club has hit some speed bumps.

Arteta impressed fans and pundits towards the end of last season as he led the team to an FA Cup win against the odds.

But they have made a poor start in the Premier League this season, and lost 3-0 to Aston Villa at home before the international break.

They have lost four of eight Premier League games this term.

“Listen, it’s a transition period,” Fabregas told 90min. “Mikel has his ideas, but it takes time.

“The problem for a coach nowadays is that you have no time. You lose three games, everyone is asking for your head.

“I know it’s very, very difficult because you want to implement your ideas, and it’s a process.

“Sometimes, it’s difficult because football is moving very quickly, everyone wants to win, there’s pressure from the board, from the fans, from the players. You’re on the spot every single day.

“He’s trying to find his team.

“They have [Dani] Ceballos, they have [Granit] Xhaka, now they’ve added Thomas Partey from Atletico, who’s a very good player as well. They have Willian, they have [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang – top, top players, that’s 100 per cent sure.

“Maybe they still need a little bit more time.”

Arsenal great demands Arteta to recall Ozil

Arsenal great Tony Adams insists Mesut Ozil can still have a future with the Gunners.

Adams has urged Arteta to bring Mesut Ozil back into the first-team fold at Arsenal, suggesting the German can be the “cherry on the cake”.

“Ozil for me is one of the best creative players in the world,” Adams said on Sky Sports’ The Football Show. “What he struggles with at times is the defensive side.

“To win the league we need great players, like Dennis Bergkamp. Now and again I would ask Dennis to get back in behind the ball and just do a little bit for us. That’s all Ozil needs to do.

“But when you’re putting him on the sides and asking him to go with runners, he’s not got that in him. But with [Thomas] Partey he’s got someone who can [do that].”

Arsenal were not a team against Aston Villa – Arteta

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said he took full responsibility for his side’s 3-0 defeat at home by Aston Villa and expressed concern that his players did not perform “as a team”.

An Ollie Watkins brace and a Bukayo Saka own goal gave Villa victory.

Defeat was especially disappointing for Arsenal on the back of a good win at Manchester United in their last Premier League game.

“We performed below our standards,” said Arteta.

“I have to say it’s the first time I’ve seen us play where we weren’t a team.

“We didn’t start well enough, we got away with VAR for an offside situation but we lost all the races, the duels and we were sloppy on the ball.

“When we created chances we didn’t hit the target – it’s a really bad combination.

“I take full responsibility. I am responsible to make the team perform on the pitch and today we were not a team and it is my job – it is why I am standing here.”

  • My heart was gone from Arsenal before Arteta arrived – Xhaka

My heart was gone from Arsenal before Arteta arrived – Xhaka

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka admits he was close to leaving the club under Unai Emery.

Xhaka was stripped of the captaincy after a row with supporters, and it looked like his days at the club were numbered.

But Mikel Arteta took over as manager and brought Xhaka back into the fold, making him a key player in central midfield.

“I was completely surprised by this. I am a person, I have emotions, things hurt me too,” he told Swiss publication NZZ am Sonntag.

“The disparaging gesture in the direction of the fans that I made back then might not be done today.

“I didn’t go to training for two days, wondering what happened in the first place. My heart was already gone from the club.

“The fact that I’m still there today is thanks to coach Mikel Arteta.

“He first wanted me to explain how I feel and why I had acted this way… I was able to describe my motives to him and let out what was on my mind.”

EPL: Arteta must fix Ozil situation – Henry

Montreal Impact coach Thierry Henry has praised the work of Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.

But Henry says he needs to clear up the Mesut Ozil “case”.

Assessing Arsenal’s recent managerial appointments, Henry told CBS Sports: “So now it was Unai Emery and now Mikel Arteta.

“It’s not easy to go after Arsene Wenger. It’s not easy at all. With Mikel, I see that the passion is back, a certain happiness is back, he gives them a good solidity.

“Now he needs to deal with Ozil case and other cases, but that doesn’t happen overnight.

“When you’re in a team with someone, you need to make sure you can clear some stuff, because it just doesn’t happen overnight.

“So he needs to bring in players he needs to fit his system and that takes time. And on top of that, this league takes even more time because the competition is crazy.”

  • Arteta sends message to Willock after Europa win

Arteta sends message to Willock after Europa win

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has stressed Joe Willock’s chance to impress in the Premier League will come after the youngster once again impressed in the club’s 4-1 win over Molde in the Europa League on Thursday.

The 21-year-old helped the Gunners overturn an early deficit by forcing two own goals before rounding out the scoring in the 88th minute.

Willock has featured in all three of Arsenal’s Europa League games to date but is yet to make a Premier League appearance for Arteta’s side this campaign.

The Gunners boss liked what he saw from the promising midfielder on Thursday, however, and hinted his chance to play on the domestic front again will come in time.

“Joe Willock could have scored more, he created a goal and a good performance,” Arteta told BT Sport post-match. “Keep doing what he is doing consistently and his chance will arrive [in the Premier League].

“I really like the approach that the younger players are having for each game, they want to make the difference, they are playing with a lot of personality.

“It was really important for us to win tonight and go top of the group. We had a convincing victory and the boys tried to go for them from the first minute. We went a goal behind but it was about the reaction, we created lot of chances.

“If they did not score the own goals, we had players there for the tap in. We could sustain attacks and we did not want to let them run on the counter because they are a threat.”

  • Mikel Arteta ‘fed up’ with William situation at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta ‘fed up’ with William situation at Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits he is ‘fed up’ with William Saliba’s situation at the club.

The Gunners were unable to loan the 19-year-old defender – signed in 2019 – and he was left out of their Europa League and Premier League squads.

“I’m fed up with the situation because as you could see, we tried to find a way in the last few days [of the transfer window] to give him some football,” Arteta told reporters on Wednesday.

“I explained that he needed that transition year when we decided to buy him and send him on loan to Saint-Etienne. For many reasons, that didn’t happen and he didn’t have that transition year.

“He needs to go through that and, at the moment, with the amount of central defenders that we have in the team, we had to let him out of the squad which is painful. After that, we had some injuries and we could have used him but it’s part of this profession.”

Asked about a possible loan exit for Saliba in 2021, Arteta said: “Well, I don’t know. We certainly tried in the last few days of the transfer window to find the right club and we had him, but at the end of the day we could not make it and we will review the situation in the next few weeks and sit down with him as well and see what is the best thing to do. But it will depend on him and other players’ situations as well.”

  • Everyone wants to follow Arteta, says Aubameyang after Man Utd win

Everyone wants to follow Arteta, says Aubameyang after Man Utd win

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says everyone at the london club wants to follow Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners moved up to ninth with a 1-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday, their first win at Old Trafford in 14 years.

Asked whether the victory changes the feel around our start to the season, Aubameyang said: “For sure. We knew since the beginning that we had to trust the process.

“Mikel is bringing something very nice and everyone wants to follow him.”

And when quizzed how big the win was, Aubameyang said: Very big. It’s been a very tough night but I’m really happy because the team played very well tonight. It’s been a long time without a win here, so of course it’s a big win.

“At half-time we were concerned we hadn’t scored but we knew that in the second half we had to score because we had some opportunists in the first half.

“We managed the first half well and then in the second half we managed to score. After that, everyone wanted to defend as a squad. We did that well and I’m happy.”

  • EPL: I tried my best with Ozil – Arteta

EPL: I tried my best with Ozil – Arteta

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta insists he “tried his best” to resurrect Mesut Ozil’s career and was “patient” and “fair” in his treatment of the German midfielder.

Ozil has been omitted from the Gunners’ Premier League and Europa League squads and it appears unlikely he will ever feature for the club again.

“What I can tell you that I tried my best, I tried to give him as many opportunities as I could,” the Arsenal boss told Sky Sports.

“And that from my own side, I’ve been patient, given him opportunities and been fair.

“He’s a player that belongs to a football club, he’s been a really important player in the last few seasons. I have to respect that, I’m here to make decisions, the best decisions for the team and for the club.

“This is what I try to do and then I have to explain them because people need the reasons and the right answers. I just give mine, whether they believe me or agree with me or not, there’s nothing I can do.

“But I have to put my decisions, with my heart and with my brain to make the right decisions that I believe are good.”
