I’ve never had a coach of Arteta’s mindset – Willian

Arsenal midfielder Willian admits he’s still adjusting to the methods of manager Mikel Arteta.

The Brazilian forward swapped life at Chelsea to move across London in the summer on a free transfer and is already a regular feature in Arteta’s side.

“It’s been a cool, new experience. I hadn’t worked with a coach with that mindset,” Willian told Globo Esporte.

“The positional game doesn’t mean that you have no freedom on the pitch, you have the freedom to move, but many times you have to respect the position, what the coach asks, the instructions, understanding that it’ll be better for the team.

“It may happen that you don’t touch the ball and get frustrated, but Mikel always says that, wait a minute, the ball will arrive. I’ve been learning a lot.”

Ozil sends Arteta message as Leicester beat Arsenal

Arsenal outcast Mesut Ozil reminded manager Mikel Arteta of what he’s missing ahead of defeat to Leicester City.

On Sunday, Ozil posted footage to social media of his goal in the 3-1 win against Leicester two years ago ahead of the game against the same opponents.

The German’s post was made before kickoff as Arsenal fell 1-0 to Jamie Vardy’s winner. It was the striker’s 11th goal in his last 11 games against Arsenal.

Ozil has been axed from both Arsenal’s Europa League and Premier League squads and faces the first-half of the season being forced to train with no chance of first team action.

The midfielder hasn’t played for Arteta since before the UK lockdown.

Arteta responds to Ozil’s Twitter comments after Europa win

Mikel Arteta says he was pleased to hear Mesut Ozil had been supporting Arsenal from afar during their 2-1 win over Rapid Vienna on Thursday.

Ozil did not travel with his Gunners team-mates as Arteta left him out of his squads for both the Europa League and the Premier League.

The 32-year-old has not played for Arsenal since football returned from coronavirus lockdown but has been at the centre of attention regardless, with speculation around his future rife.

Ozil criticised Arsenal after being left out of Arteta’s squads, noting that “loyalty is hard to come by” in football in a public message.

Before kick-off against Vienna, though, he wrote on Twitter that he would be supporting his team-mates from afar, predicting a 4-1 Gunners win. Ozil continued tweeting throughout the game, and celebrated their victory with a Man of the Match poll.

Arteta was made aware of the tweets after the game and commented: “It’s great. It’s what I want from all the players that are in our squad, I wouldn’t expect anything different – so it’s good to hear.”

The Spaniard was also asked whether he was frustrated at the amount of media coverage surrounding a player who hasn’t been on the pitch.

“No, it’s part of the situation we have and we have big players in this position it’s normal that people want to know, that fans want to have information and you guys want to ask the questions,” he replied.

“So I take it in a natural way and try to respond with honesty and clarity and give the information that is available from the inside.”

Arteta reacts after Ozil’s Premier League snub

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has no problems with leaving Mesut Ozil out of his Premier League squad.

The 31-year-old’s Arsenal career is effectively over after he was also left out of their Europa League squad.

Ozil responded furiously to the decision, accusing Arsenal of a lack of loyalty.

“Everybody is free to express their feelings,” Arteta said in response to the German’s comments.

“It was just a football decision and my conscience is very calm because I have been really fair with him.

My level of communication with him has been high, we know what to expect with each other.

“He has had the opportunities like everybody else. I’m sad that I had to leave three players out of this list but I tried to look everybody in the eye and be comfortable with it.

“With Mesut, I have this feeling because I have been very straight forward since I arrived at this club.

“It’s nothing related to [Ozil’s] behaviour. It’s my decision.”

Arteta added that he took responsibility for not getting the best out of Ozil.

“My job is to get the best out of every player to contribute to the team performance,” Arteta said. “At the moment I feel that I have failed because I want the best possible Mesut for the team.

“In some moments I was able to get close to that but at the moment I haven’t been able to do it.

“This is the reality and we have to face it. The best way is to talk things through face-to-face.

“I take full responsibility, I have to be the one getting the best out of the players.”

Arteta sets time frame for Ozil to prove himself

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has told Mesut Ozil that he has two months to prove himself at the club.

The German World Cup-winning midfield playmaker has not started a game for the Gunners since 7 March.

Arteta left German misfit Ozil out of his Europa League squad last week, and offered no guarantees that the 32-year-old will be named in the Premier League squad next week.

The Gunners manager, whose side face a tough trip to Manchester City, also left defender Sokratis out of the European squad, and he said: “I wanted to tell them face to face before releasing the squad.

“I explained the reasons why and the numbers we had. It was really difficult for me to tell them – but this is the restriction and rules.

“They have to respect that decision and try to train the best possible way, help the team when they can. Then we will see what happens in December.”

Arteta added: “To leave players out at that level, where they know they cannot get involved, is really tough. But the decision had to be made because we have an excess of foreign players.

“It is down to us to to find ways to motivate those players. And it is about how you react to disappointments. Try to look at the overall picture, make the right decisions.”

Arsenal: I lost confidence under Emery – Elneny

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny is delighted with the support of manager Mikel Arteta.

The Egypt international flourished in Turkey on-loan with Besiktas, but wondered whether he still had a future with us under Arteta – but received a pleasant surprise.

“Before I came to London, I didn’t speak to him and I was a bit…. not stressed, but just thinking about what would he like,” Elneny told the club’s website.

“When I sat with him, I said, ‘The way you train, the way you want to play is the way I love to play’ and really I love the way we train, the way he is assisting everything in the club now and it makes me excited to give 100 per cent for the team.

“Under Emery, I was not playing much, that is why you can lose your confidence and your feeling to play. That is why when I went to Besiktas, on a one-year loan, I played always and brought the confidence back, and when I came back here I saw everyone happy for me to come back.

“Everyone was excited to see me back, and when I trained, everyone gave me good feedback, saying ‘Mo, you did well’ and this makes you get your confidence back. I will build it and build it and every day I try to learn new things.

“Yes [I feel wanted], all the time, every day,” he added. “I think in any job if you wake up in the morning, try to learn new things and try to improve every day… this is what is always in my mind when I wake up. I have to go training, I need to improve myself in everything.”

Arteta axe Mesut Ozil from Europa League squad

Mesut Ozil has been left out of Arsenal’s 25-man squad for the Europa League group stages.

The club’s highest earning player – who pockets £350,000 ($454,000) a week – is one of two senior players who has been cut by boss Mikel Arteta, whose 25-man squad for the competition is only allowed to include 17 ‘non locally trained players’.

With 19 to choose from, however, Arteta has had to decide which two he would not involve – and Ozil, along with defender Sokratis, has been left out.

Months of Arteta talks led to new Arsenal deal – Aubameyang

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang admits he’s considering his new Arsenal contract for over a year.

The Gunners captain penned terms for another three years yesterday.

“I had a chat with Mikel (Arteta), that I think he gave me something very clear about the idea of the future of the club and about me,” Auba told the club’s website.

“He was straight and honest, and that’s what I like because we are always honest. He said, ‘Okay, you can maybe leave. I don’t know what your mind is [thinking] right now, but you can leave and go for trophies at other clubs or you can stay here and have a legacy. This, for me, was the key word.

“We had a chat when we were in lockdown,” Auba added. “He called me. Normally we have to speak about a game. He called me and said, ‘Forget about it.’ I had prepared maybe two pages and he said, ‘Yeah, forget about it. Let’s talk about real things.’

“He said, ‘I want to be honest with you, how do you feel?’ And I was like, ‘I have to say the truth, I feel very good.’ It was maybe two months, or three months that he was here and the training, you can feel the passion.

“You can feel everything from this guy. He is so good, he’s the kind of guy who you can trust in him.”

‘Willian was wooed by Arteta to Arsenal’

Willian bought into Mikel Arteta’s “incredible project” at Arsenal, according to his agent Kia Joorabchian, who says the ex-Chelsea star was “wooed” by the Arsenal boss.

Arsenal announced the arrival of Willian on a free transfer on August 14, as they snapped up the winger on a three-year deal following his departure from Stamford Bridge.

Joorabchian says that a lucrative £220,000 per-week deal was not the main draw to Emirates Stadium for his client, who was blown away by the current Arsenal head coach’s long-term vision for the club.

“With Willian, there’s no secret he wanted a three-year contract, but the Mikel Arteta project was just incredible,” the agent told talkSPORT.

“He was very much wooed by Mikel and [technical director] Edu, and what Mikel presented to him and the way he wants to play football, the way he wants to continue and the success he wants to bring to Arsenal, made the difference.

“That’s what he said and that’s exactly what it was.”

  • UPDATED: Panic in UK as Chelsea star, Odoi, Arsenal manager, Arteta test positive for coronavirus

Mikel Arteta, manager of Arsenal, has tested positive for the coronavirus, the club announced on Thursday.

Based on the development, the club closed its London training centre and directed all those who had recent contact with Areta to self-isolate.

“Arsenal personnel who had recent close contact with Mikel will now self-isolate in line with Government health guidelines. We expect this to be a significant number of people from Colney, including the full first-team squad and coaching staff, as well as a smaller number of people from our Hale End Academy which we have also temporarily closed as a precaution,” the statement read.

“We expect those who did not have close contact with Mikel to return to work in the coming days. In the meantime our Colney and Hale End training centres will undergo a deep clean and our other club sites are operating as normal.”

Vinai Venkatesham, managing director of the club, was quoted as saying: “The health of our people and the wider public is our priority and that is where our focus is. Our thoughts are with Mikel who is disappointed but in good spirits. We are in active dialogue with all the relevant people to manage this situation appropriately, and we look forward to getting back to training and playing as soon as medical advice allows.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea announced that Hudson-Odoi has tested positive for the deadly coronavirus, hours after Arsenal head coach, Mikel Arteta, was confirmed to have contracted the pandemic.

The entire Chelsea first-team, coaches and support staff will now self-isolate after the 19-year-old Odoi was sent home from the club’s Cobham training ground on Monday morning after having cold-like symptoms.

Confirming the development, the club said in a statement: “Chelsea men’s team player Callum Hudson-Odoi had a positive test result for coronavirus returned this evening,” club statement released in the early hours of Friday morning read.

“Chelsea personnel who had recent close contact with the player in the men’s team building will now self-isolate in line with Government health guidelines.”
