Havertz on Bournemouth win: Arteta taught me so many things

Arsenal attacker Kai Havertz was delighted with their 3-0 win against Bournemouth in today’s early kickoff.

Havertz won a penalty converted by Bukayo Saka, with Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard also scoring.

“It was a tough game, we had lots of chances in the first half but we didn’t manage to score them,” said Havertz. “They are a good team, fair play to them. In the end, we are happy with the three points and three goals too.

“I haven’t seen the replay but I think he touches me (for the penalty).

“I felt the contact and went down. For me it’s a penalty. I said to the goalkeeper ‘you touched me’.”

He continued: “I just enjoy it on the pitch right now. It’s so nice. I have so many good players behind me and I really enjoy the number nine role.

“We have two more games to play and we are going to give everything. We’ll enjoy those games and see how it goes.

“I enjoy every second. He [Mikel Arteta] taught me so many things, especially at the start when it was tough for me. I’m so glad I was here. Things were hard at a the start but everyone stuck by me.

“I work hard but for me it’s not easy to go into a new team. Sometimes I’m a shy guy.

“To go into a new team with a new manager and different players then it can be tough. I came from Chelsea and that didn’t make it easy too. The manager has helped a lot and the players. The fans have been unbelievable.

“I needed maybe to change my game a bit. When I came form Germany I realised it’s not easy to survive in this league. I had to adapt and I’ve done it well. I enjoy contact with my opponents and aerial duels too.”

On Bukayo Saka, he added: “He’s unbelievable and shows it every week.

    “I think he’s 21 or 22 and I’ve never seen a player like this.

“England are very lucky. He’s hungry every day and if you see him in training he’s special.”

  • I want to thank my Arsenal players – Arteta

I want to thank my Arsenal players – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has come to the defence of his underperforming team.

The Gunners have crashed out of the Champions League in the quarter finals against Bayern Munich.

They are also adrift of Manchester City in the Premier League after losing to Aston Villa last weekend.

Asked about his team, Arteta stated: “I am fully behind them. Thank you so much for the journey, that we are together. Thank you so much for being in April and in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and being so close.

“Thank you so much for competing against the best team in the history of the rest of the Premier League, and the best team in the last eight years in this competition with Liverpool, and to be there with a chance to win it. So, thank you so much for everything that they have done because it is unbelievable.”

He then added on their decline in performances: “Sometimes it’s the opponent as well. The opponent’s play very good and you have to congratulate them. Sometimes it will be my fault as well, not changing anything or making the right call.

“Sometimes the players don’t have that spark. But what would have happened if we scored two, three or four goals in the first half against Aston Villa or two or three against Bayern like we did before. Who knows? In the end, the game-state is so important in football. You have to recognise that. You can’t just isolate a moment to make an evaluation. It’s too simplistic.”

  • Mikel Arteta hails magic night in UCL win

Mikel Arteta hails magic night in UCL win

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hailed a magic night as his side held their nerve to reach the Champions League quarter-finals with a penalty-shootout victory over FC Porto on Tuesday.

Leandro Trossard’s first-half goal made it 1-1 on aggregate after Porto had edged the first leg.

But Arsenal could not conjure a winner in normal and extra time before they triumphed 4-2 on penalties.

It is the first time the north Londoners have been in the quarter-finals since 2010.

This was after they suffered seven successive exits in the last-16 before a six-season absence from Europe’s elite club competition.

“A magic night. We expected a really tough opponent. It’s very difficult to generate momentum and that’s credit to (Porto),” Arteta told reporters.

“It’s a huge experience for us. We had to do it as well through penalties. Credit to (goalkeeper) David (Raya) who had some difficult moments to start but showed incredible determination and stood up and got rewarded.”

Loanee Raya had returned to the starting lineup after being unable to play against his host club Brentford on Saturday as Arsenal won an eighth successive Premier League match to move top of the table with 10 games left.

The Spaniard proved the hero on a tense night as he kept out Galeno’s penalty to spark wild celebrations.

“Obviously it’s a great feeling for me personally, first time in the Champions League and for the club to get into the quarter-finals for the first time in so many years,” Raya said.

“We’ve worked a lot on penalties this year and all the hard work with the goalie coach and the team has paid off. A great moment personally and collectively.

“This means everything. You play football for these kind of things and I’m lucky to be playing for Arsenal.”

There was a mood of euphoria at the end and Arteta said the fans had helped his young side get over the line.

“We’re starting to create an unbelievable energy in the stadium, we were all pushing to get it done and together we have done it,” he said.

“We absolutely love (the fans), the energy they gave, how positive they were, how they contributed.

“They made us win, it’s as simple as that.”

Arteta praises Ramsdale’s courage after mistake

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has praised his team’s second-choice goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale for his positive response to his mistake during their crucial game against Brentford.

Ramsdale showed his powers of recovery after a massive error gifted Brentford an equaliser, twice keeping his side level before a late winner on Saturday put the pressure back on the Gunners’ title rivals.

The England keeper has lost his starting spot to David Raya this season, but with Brentford loanee Raya ineligible, Ramsdale made his first appearance since Jan. 7.

An uneventful first half for Ramsdale turned into a nightmare on the stroke of halftime, as he took far too long on the ball inside his six-yard box, and allowed Yoane Wissa to pounce.

The away fans, tried to get under Ramsdale’s skin, repeatedly serenading him with an unfavourable comparison to Raya, and greeting his every touch with sarcastic cheers.

But the England keeper produced two second-half saves to keep the game at 1-1 before Kai Havertz’s late header sent Arsenal top for the first time since Christmas Eve with a 2-1 win.

Ramsdale was all smiles after the final whistle as he was embraced by his team mates and Arteta, who described him as “a person with a huge personality and courage”.

“I’m not surprised because the whole team, the whole stadium, was behind him and he has that respect and that admiration.

“We really wanted to win for him in that moment and he really helped us to win,” Arteta told reporters.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank also spoke to Ramsdale after the final whistle.

“I said I think he’s a very good keeper and I didn’t want him to be involved in that situation,” Frank said.

“I don’t think that was a mistake, I think that was very good pressure from Wissa.”

  • Ramsdale desperate to play like the rest – Arteta

Ramsdale desperate to play like the rest – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has no fears about playing Aaron Ramsdale in the Premier League.

Ramsdale will be in goal as the Gunners take on Brentford as they aim to go top of the table.

Given David Raya is on loan from the Bees, he cannot play against his parent club.

On Ramsdale, Arteta stated: “It’s what it is. He’s fully prepared. He’s training every day. He’s desperate to play like the rest of the boys that haven’t had that many opportunities. Saturday will be a great opportunity for him.”

On his mood, he added: “He’s been brilliant. He’s been really supportive and pushing in training every day like I expected. It’s a joy to have two top goalkeepers in the team.”

He then finished: “One of the toughest things is dealing with the players that don’t have the game time they deserve. Not only Aaron, but there are many of those. We have an unbelievable group of players. We try to be straight, explain things, be close to them and give them support. Then when they have the opportunity, they want to contribute to the team in the best possible way. That’s what Aaron will want to do on Saturday.”

    Mikel Arteta on Barcelona shortlist

Arsenal manger Mikel Arteta could be in line for a move to Barcelona in the coming months.

The Spaniard has given his full commitment to the Gunners since arriving from Manchester City, where he was assistant to Pep Guardiola.

In the subsequent years, Arteta has won the FA Cup and established Arsenal as title contenders.

According to Relevo, Barcelona are eager to bring him into the club for next season.

They believe that he is the ideal replacement for Xavi Hernandez, who is leaving when the season concludes.

Xavi, another midfield maestro, has indicated that the pressure of managing Barca was too much for him to handle.

Arsenal character fuelled bounce-back victory – Arteta

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta praised his players’ mentality after an impressive response to their defeat at Porto as they blew away Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Gunners scored twice in each half of their 4-1 home victory to record a sixth straight league win, a run in which they have racked up an aggregate scoreline of 25-3.

Saturday’s performance kept the pressure on the Premier League’s top two of Liverpool and Manchester City.

“I think we had a great performance, big credit to the boys after two days and just half a day to prepare the game,” Arteta told reporters.

“The way we executed everything, the intensity, the commitment, the determination, the aggression, and progression in everything that we were doing with the ball.

“They played with a lot of courage and we got rewarded.”

The Arsenal manager was particularly pleased with his side’s reaction.

“We showed how much we want it … I could sense it from the moment we were in Porto that we were ready for the game,” he said.

“In sport, things happen for a reason, you have to learn from that. We have to understand why that happened and be better.”

Arteta, however, was still keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

“We could have scored many more today,” he said. “We have to continue to do that, keep developing, all the things that we can still do better.”

  • Gabriel Martinelli never satisfied – Arteta

Gabriel Martinelli never satisfied – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is delighted with the attitude of Gabriel Martinelli.

The attacker struck in last Sunday’s win against Liverpool.

Arteta said: Yeah (I am happy), especially because he wants more. He’s not satisfied.

“He’s not satisfied when he does really well. He’s not satisfied when you put him on the bench. Only good things are going to happen to him.”

On the team’s form, he added: “Playing with more and more aggression and scoring goals. The amount of goals that we share in the squad is important. Especially because we have lost big players this season for long periods and we’re still competitive.”

  • Why Liverpool clash ideal for Jorginho – Arteta

Why Liverpool clash ideal for Jorginho – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta heaped praise on veteran midfielder Jorginho this weekend.

The Italian came back into the Gunners starting lineup against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta admitted he needed the intelligence and experience of the midfielder in his otherwise youthful team.

Speaking after the 3-1 win, Arteta stated: “It’s a game that I had in my mind, that I was imagining how much we were going to need him. They’re a team that don’t really allow you to put the fifth player in the frontline, the way they play.

“He’s a really intelligent player, his biggest quality is that he makes the people around him better. He connects everybody. I think he was man of the match.”

He then finished on Jorginho’s quality: “Unbelievable. I always say that he’s an example, a role model. He’s been in a lot of pain because he’s had an issue he’s been carrying for months.

“He didn’t want to stop, he’s been playing with that. He’s been training, always the first one in and the last one out. For all the kids at the club, if you want to look at somebody, just look at him. He’s won everything but you ask him not to play or play one minute last week he’s happy to go there. Ask him to play 90 minutes at that rhythm and he’s able to do that. I’m really lucky to have players like this.”

Arteta announces plans for Smith Rowe

Premier League club Arsenal have rejected all approaches for Emile Smith Rowe.

West Ham were said to be in talks with Arsenal for the midfielder this week.

But football.london says Aston Villa, Newcastle and West Ham have all had their attempts rebuffed.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said on Friday: “I’m really happy with Emile. He’s in the right trajectory. He’s settled really well and you know I’m not going to talk about individual situations

“No changes. Emile is Emile. We’re really happy to have him. He needs chances. What we have to do is give him minutes.”
