‘Personally I like Ramsdale’ – Wenger criticises Arteta over keeper rotations

Former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has criticised Mikel Arteta’s rotations of his goalkeepers.

Wenger also admits he rates Aaron Ramsdale ahead of David Raya.

“Personally, I like Ramsdale. If I was in his position I would not give up,” Wenger told beIN Sports.

“I believe he has the chance to come back into the team.”

Asked if he believes Ramsdale is superior to Raya, he answered: “Better… better… I don’t know if he’s better. I just think Ramsdale has made decisive saves in the games last season.

“They were not happy maybe with his feet, his distribution.

“I don’t believe in rotation with goalkeepers, I don’t believe in a lack of clarity of the hierarchy with goalkeepers. That doesn’t work.”

Mikel Arteta hints Havertz will start against Chelsea

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta feels Kai Havertz is up for today’s clash at Chelsea.

It will mark Havertz’s return to his old club for the first time since joining from the Blues.

Arteta said: “The last touch of the game that he had and the contribution he had against City was terrific.

“It was difficult to make the decision whether or not to play him but as well we knew that the last 25-30 minutes against City were going to be critical.

“And the impact that the subs had was crucial to the result and I’m really happy how he reacted and contributed to the team.

“Could it prove to be a big moment for him? I hope so, I hope so, and I can see that the confidence is shifting and he’s in a much better place.

“And we have to continue to do that and he needs to play.”

What Havertz and Jorginho have said about Chelsea – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says Kai Havertz and Jorginho have never had a bad word to say about former club Chelsea.

The Gunners go to Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Arteta said: “They talk highly of everyone at the club, it’ll be a special day for them.”

He added: “It is a big game. I’ve been really impressed by them this season, it is different. They deserve more than what they have in the table. We’ll have to be at our best tomorrow.

“I go game by game. Chelsea have a good squad, they are at home, we are in a good moment too. We will try and beat them and see what happens.”

Arteta says Bukayo Saka will be fit for the game and commented on whether England should rest the winger given their Euros qualification.

He said, “I don’t know how they’ll approach it. When our players are fit, we are happy to let them go to the national teams, the players want to go. It is a great opportunity for them.

“Sometimes players feel better when playing every three or four days. They can get knocks, this is part of the game. I’m sure he wants to play [against Chelsea]. I don’t see any player that doesn’t want to be in the starting XI.”

With David Raya now favoured, Ramsdale is considering his options ahead of the January market.

Arteta said today: “It is not easy for any player who is not playing as much as they would like.

“He has got to work hard and try to affect the team in a different way.”

Arsenal win against Man City sends a message – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admits his team sent a message to Manchester City on Sunday.

The Gunners beat the Premier League champions in the league for the first time in several years.

After losing the title to City last term, despite being top for most of the campaign, Arteta was delighted to see his side win 1-0 on Sunday.

Post-game, he stated: “Certainly sends a message to the team, keep believing in what they are doing, they are a fantastic group of players, the way they try, the understanding, the chemistry that they have between them you sense it and you need it to beat that, today again really proud, I was proud on Wednesday when we lost the game, and I am really proud again today as well to be part of that team.”

He added on lifting a psychological barrier against City: “Well, I don’t know if it was a barrier. Obviously, it’s something that we needed to go through. To beat them, first of all, you have to lose against them.

“We have to lose probably the way we lost at the Etihad, because we lost in two different ways, last season when we were the better team in the first half and then we conceded the goal after Tomiyasu’s backpass and De Bruyne scoring. But the team showed a real maturity today, that maturity comes from experiences and sometimes you need that to become a better team.”

  • Arteta predicts more goals from Declan Rice

Arteta predicts more goals from Declan Rice

Declan Rice’s stoppage time goal in Arsenal’s last-gasp 3-1 defeat of Manchester United on Saturday was only his 11th in 208 Premier League games.

But manager Mikel Arteta believes the club’s record signing can start hitting the net regularly.

The former West Ham player is happiest as a deep-lying central midfielder.

But with the quality of Arsenal’s squad, Arteta expects the 105 million pounds (132.17 million dollars) player to add goals to his already impressive attributes.

“When you see the technical ability that he has and how he executed in these moments.

“His range when shooting from accuracy and the power he generates with no space, with both feet.

“He’s got the timing as well to arrive in the box. The position will dictate that a lot because it’s about how you arrive. But he’s got the ability to do that for sure,” Arteta told reporters.

England midfielder Rice’s goal arrived in the sixth minute of stoppage time and gave Arsenal a 2-1 lead before Gabriel Jesus broke free to seal the points a couple of minutes later.

His deflected effort sparked delirium on the Arsenal bench and in the stands and felt like the moment that he really announced himself as an Arsenal player.

“Big matches for big players and Rice was tremendous.

“He dominated in the middle of the park, he understood what was needed and gave the team motivation and then produced the moment of magic to win the game.

“To produce the same level of quality there when the pressure is on in that moment is just unique.

“You need to have that quality, that sense and that composure. He showed it today and he’s there,” Arteta said.

Arteta also said Rice’s impact went beyond the pitch.

    “He’s a great kid.

“I think he’s got a good mixture between being extremely demanding with everybody and himself, having a bit of banter and being around the staff and the boys in a really humble way.

“So I think he’s fitting in brilliantly,” he said.

Arsenal were held at home by Fulham the previous week with champions Manchester City already showing that they will be offering up few gifts to their rivals this season.

It was no wonder the celebrations were wild at the final whistle.

Although Arteta said he was not getting too wrapped up on waiting in hope for Manchester City to drop points.

“There are still 34 games to go! If you deserve it after 38 games you will be where you deserve.

“We can only focus on that because it’s very early,” he said.

EPL: Mikel Arteta rejects Havertz criticism

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta rejected criticism of Kai Havertz after their 2-2 draw with Fulham.

Arteta was asked if the fans are turning on the German.

He said, “No, I saw an action when he played backwards and he could have turned. That’s more I think the demands of everybody to play forward and to impact the game in the final third because we had the urgency to win.

Asked if he’ll win over the fans, Havertz said: “Yes I think so.

“I think he’s done already really good things. Today it was tough in certain moments. He got in great areas and the ball didn’t arrive. In a lot of situations he should have scored a lot of goals already this season. That’s the thing that is missing there.”

EPL: I didn’t instruct Odegaard to take spot kick – Arteta

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has revealed that he didn’t instruct Odegaard to take the penalty during their hard-fought win over Crystal Palace on Monday night.

According to the gaffer, he was just as ‘surprised’ to see his captain step up to take the spot kick  after Eddie Nketiah was brought down in the area by Sam Johnstone.

Odegaard decided to take the penalty that gave the Gunners a deserved 1-0 victory against Crystal Palace.

Saka is Arsenal’s penalty taker but Odegaard decided to take the spot-kick against Crystal Palace and it turned out to be the winner.

In the post-match conference, Arteta was asked if it was a conscious decision to make Odegaard the designated penalty taker and he said no.

The Spaniard told reporters that he had played no part in the decision.

“I have no clue, it’s about the leadership of players, and if they felt it was the right thing to do, for me I’m fine,” he said.

“They have to make those decisions on the pitch. I was surprised like everybody else, but he scored the goal, which is the important thing and we won the game.”

Arsenal joined Brighton and Manchester City as joint top leaders in the English Premier League after recording two wins in two games so far in the Premiership.
