Ten Hag reveals his best manager in EPL

Manchester United coach, Erik ten Hag, has named Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta as the best manager in the Premier League currently.

The Dutchman spoke before Manchester United’s Premier League 3-2 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday night.

“I think in the Premier League, there are many incredibly good coaches at the moment,” Ten Hag told Sky Sports.

“He [Mikel Arteta] is definitely one of them. What he is doing, he is the best in this moment because it is really a big performance, it is huge what he’s doing.

“He is managing his team and they are so consistent, the most consistent team in the Premier League at the moment, playing incredible football. It is fantastic.”

Arsenal not at Man City’s level despite United win – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta insists Manchester City remains Premier League title favourites after victory over Manchester United.

Eddie Nketiah’s 90th-minute effort secured a euphoric win over Erik ten Hag’s improving side to maintain their five-point lead over champions City, who beat Wolves earlier in the day.

But Arteta said, “I know my team so well. I know where we are, I know why we are here and I know where we want to be and we are far from that.

“I know the levels of the other teams and one especially that has won in the last five or six years and we are not there yet.”

Arteta says the win will be a huge boost to his players’ self belief.

He said, “I hope they believe, not that they (believe they) are champions, but they are good enough to play against these teams and that they have done it.

“We talked about that in the last two or three days. We know our reality, we know still how much we have to improve.

“We know what’s taken us to the position we are today and we have to reinforce that every day.

“(Wins like this gives us) Belief and confidence that we are going in the right direction. That the way we’re playing is going to reward them.

“It’s just pure spirit, pure belief and testament to what we do. In my opinion that’s what we have to continue.”

  • 5 Lessons from EPL weekend fixtures

5 Lessons from EPL weekend fixtures

Mikel Arteta has Arsenal playing like champions, Pep Guardiola’s system at Manchester City is fraying and Julen Lopetegui offered Wolves hope in defeat to Manchester United. Here’s five lessons we learned from the past Premier League weekend:

    1) Arsenal & Man City contrast puts Arteta’s side in charge

As a seven-point gap opens at the top of the Premier League table analysis of the performances of Arsenal and Manchester City reveals that Mikel Arteta’s side really are the favourites to lift the trophy. It might feel too early to call it and plenty can still go wrong, but it is time for Arsenal supporters to believe – not just because of their team’s quality but the structural weaknesses engulfing City.

Arsenal have a fluidity, variety, and swirling creativity that seems to open up every team in their path. Brighton are accommodating opponents thanks to Roberto de Zerbi’s all-out attacking system, which inevitably means there is room for any team willing to dribble vertically through the lines, and yet this was still a potential banana-skin game that Arsenal easily overcame.

As for Man City, Erling Haaland is becoming a problem. His lack of movement makes it easier for opponents to begin counter-attacks from deep, but more importantly having a static striker means Man City’s creative players are forced to roam closer to him, in turn rupturing the path from back to front. Pep Guardiola’s side have slowed down, become stuttered against a deep-lying defence like Everton’s.

Over the next few weeks Arsenal and Man City play a combined seven matches against the ‘Big Six’ plus Newcastle, before their head-to-head on February 15. It is a definitive period of the season. On current form, Arsenal will pull further clear by then.

    2) Emery wing-back plan allows Kamara and Luiz to shine

The headline from Aston Villa’s 2-0 victory was just how awful Tottenham Hotspur performed, and indeed this was yet another example of Antonio Conte’s conservatism looking ill-suited to a ‘Big Six’ side. Spurs always look lifeless without Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur breaking the lines and it is arguably time we ask serious questions about whether Conte can work at Tottenham.

But Villa deserve praise for their performance. Unai Emery is a brilliant tactician when it comes to devising detailed plans to negate the opposition and his key trick here was to deploy John McGinn and Emiliano Buendia in unusual positions as wide midfielders, as both players dropped into a back six when Spurs entered the final third. It completely nullified the Spurs wing-backs, and with so little creativity in the centre of the pitch that was enough to blunt Conte’s side.

McGinn’s positioning was particularly strange, the Scotland international playing high on the right wing when Villa had the ball, presumably in order to pin Ivan Perisic. It gave Boubacar Kamara and Douglas Luiz extra time on the ball, and the latter was pivotal in both Villa goals. Already Emery has found a midfield partnership with the composure and technical ability to elevate Villa to a whole new level.

    3) Clumsy Everton shape spared by Guardiola reacting too late

Everton didn’t really deserve a point from this game. Frank Lampard’s 5-3-2 made sense in theory, with Alex Iwobi expected to break out of that midfield three to give Everton a three-pronged counter-attack, but the visitors didn’t appear to have an organised plan for how to ensure this stopped them from being overwhelmed centrally. Man City should have been able to capitalise on the weirdness of a 5-2-3 more often than they did.

For a long time it looked as though Erling Haaland’s 24th minute strike would be the winner, and it had come by exploiting Everton’s shape. Idrissa Gueye and Amadou Onana were left to cover the entire width of the pitch as Lampard’s back five refused to step out to help, and as both were drawn to Kevin de Bruyne ridiculous amounts of space opened up:

A brilliant Demarai Gray strike gave Everton a fortunate point, because had Man City pushed on after the opener they could easily have put the game to bed. Instead, they allowed it to drift.

    4) Lopetegui ideas take hold before poor tactical switch

Marcus Rashford’s winner at Molineaux was entirely of Wolves’ own making. Julen Lopetegui had switched to a back three just three minutes earlier, and as soon as he made the call it looked like a mistake; Wolves had done a very good job at pushing Man Utd back and confronting them as equals, only for such a defensive switch to alarm the players and see them sit right back. Falling over themselves in their own penalty area, Wolves quickly collapsed.

But overall Wolves supporters should be pleased with the progress being made. For long stretches of this game they looked like a Lopetegui side, with possession being recycled at every opportunity as the Wolves players followed the mantra of keeping the ball at all costs, even if that meant going backwards and starting the move from scratch.

They also counter-pressed aggressively in the United third, while the full-backs Hugo Bueno and Nelson Semedo bombed forward at every opportunity, with Bueno helping to create several half-chances by winning his battle with Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

    5) Jones’s formation change a worrying sign

Nathan Jones has just had six weeks to train his players in a particular style, and yet it only took one defeat – Boxing Day’s 3-1 loss to Brighton – for him to abandon the 4-2-3-1 for a 3-4-2-1 formation, only to reinstate it at half-time of Saturday’s defeat to Fulham. Throwing out his plans that quickly, and deploying a rapid-fire trial-and-error approach, is an alarming thing to see in a new manager.

The change to a back three was presumably a response to Southampton’s dreadful defensive record, yet taking a player out of central midfield only made Saints more blunt and directionless. They lack quality at both ends of the pitch and, on a five-game losing run, increasingly look destined for relegation.

  • Arteta explains relationship with David Moyes

Arteta explains relationship with David Moyes

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits he’s close to West Ham United manager David Moyes.

Arteta played under Moyes for six years during his time at Everton, who signed him from Real Sociedad in 2005 when the Spaniard was just 22. They enjoyed immediate success together, with Arteta’s arrival playing an important role in the Toffees’ top-four finish in 2004/05 as they reached the Champions League qualifiers.

He would go on to play over 200 times for Moyes, and admits he learnt plenty from the Scottish boss in that time that helped shape his managerial philosophy, and was happy to pay tribute to his former boss before they meet again on Boxing Day.

“He was extremely supportive all the time and everything we did together, and I have incredible memories with him because we had a very successful time together,” Arteta said.

“I’m so grateful first off for the trust he always showed in me. For how much I learned of him on the field, off the field, about building a team, about getting the right characters in the team to build what you want.

“I know for sure he has been working the team really, really hard since he took over.

“He absolutely maximized the potential of that team, and took that team to a different level.

“I’m sure they have been working really hard like we all have been in this period, and it will be a very difficult contest.”

Qatar 2022: Mikel Arteta influence on Regragui and Morocco revealed

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has had an influence on Morocco’s stunning World Cup run to the semi-finals.

Morocco manager Walid Regragui – managing at native side Wydad AC at the time – attended the Spaniard’s 2021 masterclass via zoom on the Gunners’ 2020 FA Cup win.

In that call, Arteta broke down Arsenal’s 2-0 FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City and the behind-closed-doors 2-1 final win over Chelsea.

According to Tribalfootball, Regragui, 47, listened with intent and was clearly taking notes, as just a year later he is managing in a World Cup semi-final.

Morocco are the Qatar World Cup’s dark horses, and topped a group consisting of 2018 finalists and fellow semi-finalists, Croatia, as well as Belgium’s golden generation and an impressive Canadian side.

The North African side then slayed 2010 winners Spain 3-0 on penalties after drawing 0-0 in normal time.

Portugal came up next in the quarters and Morocco pulled off an unlikely 1-0 win to become the first African country to reach the last four of the competition, going one further than Cameroon 1990, Senegal 2002, and Ghana 2010.

Impressively, Morocco have conceded just one goal in the winter tournament and it didn’t even come from an opposition player.

  • Mikel Arteta dismisses Barcelona rumours

    Mikel Arteta dismisses Barcelona rumours

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says he is “extremely happy” at the Emirates after reports linking him with the Barcelona job.

The 40-year-old Spaniard has guided the Gunners to the top of the Premier League, while they reach the last 16 of the Europa League if they beat Zurich.

Barca, who are managed by their former player Xavi, have lined up Arteta as a future boss, according to the reports.

“They [Barcelona] have a phenomenal coach who is an absolute legend at the club,” said Arteta on Wednesday.

Arsenal are top of Group A with 12 points from five games, two more than second-placed PSV Eindhoven – who are in Norway to face Bodo/Glimt – before the final round of group games.

The Gunners are guaranteed a top-two finish.

  • We need goals to win games – Arteta to Arsenal strikers

We need goals to win games – Arteta to Arsenal strikers

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits they need their front players to rediscover their scoring form.

Arteta has told Gabriel Jesus he needs to start scoring again if Arsenal are to maintain their fine start to the season.

Neither the Brazilian nor Eddie Nketiah has found the net in Arsenal’s last six games, during which time the side’s performances have started to suffer.

Only once in that run have the Gunners scored more than one goal and they have paid the price recently, drawing at Southampton before being beaten by PSV Eindhoven on Thursday.

“We need goals and we need goals from our front players, that’s for sure, to win the games and to give us bigger margins,” said Arteta.

“That run of a lack of goals has to end for us to be in a position to win more matches.

“It’s not the first time Eddie or Gabi have been five games without scoring a goal in their career, that happens to any striker I’ve known of. And you have to deal with that, it’s part of their job.”

  • Mikel Arteta announces new Gabriel contract

Mikel Arteta announces new Gabriel contract

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has signed a new contract at the club until 2027.

The Brazilian international joined Arsenal in September 2020 for a reported £23.14m from Lille.

“He is a young player with a great work ethic,” said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. “Working with Gabi every day is a pleasure.”

Gabriel’s new deal is a two-year extension to his original contract.

The 24-year-old has made 81 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners, scoring nine goals.

“I think when we look at a central defender we look at partnerships,” added Arteta.

“I think Gabi has made William Saliba a better player and I think Willy helps him to be the same.

“A winning team needs to have a spine, play at a really high level, and keep clean sheets. We are doing that a lot.”

The Gunners are four points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League having won nine and lost one of their ten fixtures so far.

  • Europa: Jesus left out of Arsenal squad

Europa: Jesus left out of Arsenal squad

Gabriel Jesus has not traveled with the Arsenal squad for their Europa League tie against Bodo/Glimt.

The Brazilian was a doubt for the game after picking up a knock against Liverpool at the weekend.

Now it appears that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has taken the decision not to risk Jesus’ fitness for the mid-week clash against the Norwegian outfit.

“We thought that with everything he’s been through in the last few weeks it was better that he stayed at home,” Arteta told reporters during his pre-match press conference

“A few players that were injured,” Arteta added on other absences.

“You will find tomorrow. I can’t give you everything.”

  • There is fear of getting sacked – Mikel Arteta

There is fear of getting sacked – Mikel Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says he accepts he’ll eventually be sacked which is the biggest fear as a team coach.

The Spaniard, 40, has turned things around at the Emirates having been one of the favourites to get the chop last season.

But Arteta says losing his job is inevitable.

Speaking on Michael Calvin’s Football People podcast, Arteta said: “As a manager, probably it’s the (biggest) fear of getting sacked.

“I made a very conscious decision the day I made the decision to become a coach – I said: ‘It will happen. Today, tomorrow, in a month’s time, in ten years time. I don’t know when it will happen.’

“That cannot drive my emotion and this cannot be the reason why I do certain things or not.

“For me now the fear is to let people down.”

The feel-good factor is back at Arsenal, something that has been absent since the departure of legendary boss Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal are unified both on and off the pitch – something a long-serving staff member told Arteta.

They told the Gunners boss: “I’ve never seen this before.

“I have never felt that unity across the club, with our supporters.”
