  • Nwaneri makes history as Arsenal cruise back to top of Premier League

Nwaneri makes history as Arsenal cruise back to top of Premier League

Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri became the youngest ever Premier League player at 15 years and 181 days as the Gunners defeated Brentford to return to the top of the table.

Mikel Arteta sent on the schoolboy midfielder in the closing moments with his side leading 3-0.

Arsenal’s travelling fans greeted Nwaneri’s appearance by singing: “He’s going to school in the morning.”

William Saliba set Arsenal on their way to a sixth win in seven top-flight games this season after the France defender climbed high to head Bukayo Saka’s corner in off the post.

It was 2-0 inside the opening half an hour as Brazil forward Jesus, a £45m signing from Manchester City in July, headed Granit Xhaka’s measured chip past David Raya.

Portuguese midfielder Fabio Vieira capped a dominant Arsenal display by marking his first Premier League start since joining from Porto with a goal from 25 yards.

Brentford were unbeaten in their previous three games and could have climbed to fifth in the table with a win, but they rarely threatened as forward Ivan Toney, who has been called up by England for the first time, struggled for service.

Arsenal had started the weekend top of the table but dropped to third after Manchester City and Tottenham won on Saturday.

This win, however, put the Gunners on 18 points, one more than their nearest rivals before their next match against Spurs in the north London derby at Emirates Stadium on 1 October

Finally, Arsene Wenger speaks on Arsenal chances to win EPL

Former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has broken his silence regarding the club, and backed Mikel Arteta’s team to challenge for the league.

The Frenchman has been notoriously silent about the club’s fortunes since he was moved on from the job in 2018 for Unai Emery.

Speaking about the job Arteta has done, 72-year-old Wenger said: “I would say they are moving in the right direction.

“I honestly think there is no weak position in the team… they are young, promising players and they have bought well this year.

“There is no completely dominating team this season and Arsenal has a chance with the potential that is there.

“We used to be in the top four and why not again? You cannot even rule out the fact that they can fight for the title and hopefully they can do it.”

Mikel Arteta speaks on current Arsenal squad

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta speaks about his current squad after the end of the transfer window.

The Gunners pushed hard to prise Douglas Luiz away from Aston Villa on deadline day.

Arteta said: “We had a lot of things still to do with squad. Look at the departures compared to what we’ve recruited. The club has done a phenomenal job to bring players with the profiles we wanted.

“Unfortunately Tomo [Tomiyasu] got injured in the same place last time and [Mohamed] Eleny has a long-term injury. We had to react. We tried but have to bring in the right player for team and for club but didn’t manage to do that.

“It’s the team we have. For me it’s best squad and team I have available. There is nothing else we can do. We have an academy as well that we have to use and we will try to do that the best possible way.”

REVEALED: Arsenal players backed Arteta on axing Aubameyang

Arsenal’s players backed manager Mikel Arteta’s handling of former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang antics last season.

Arteta’s decision to strip now Barcelona striker Aubameyang of the Arsenal captaincy was backed by the Gunners squad – with some players even commending the Spaniard for making such a bold call.

In a new clip from the latest set of episodes from ‘All or Nothing: Arsenal’ – which will be released on Thursday – the Arsenal squad’s reaction to learning Aubameyang had been stripped of the captaincy has been revealed for the first time.

And the reaction of Mohamed Elneny and Rob Holding proves that the Gunners squad were on board with Arteta’s tough stance on Aubameyang.

Elneny asks Holding: “What happened with Auba yesterday?” to which the centre-half replies: “He want to Paris yesterday then came home and the boss wanted him back…”

Surprised by the timing of Aubameyang’s trip, Elneny responds: “One day before?” with Holding replying: “Yeah one day before and he came back the next day and then was late for training. He had permission to go there, because it was something to do with his mum – he had to go see his mum – but then he didn’t get back in time, didn’t listen to him [Arteta] and do the correct thing.”

Both were in agreement over Arteta’s big decision, with Elneny quipping: “The boss had balls,” with Holding in agreement: “Yeah the boss had b***s, eh?”

Arsenal getting the full package with Jesus – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has given a glowing endorsement of Gabriel Jesus after his move to the North London club.

Arteta worked alongside Jesus at Manchester City.

The Brazilian has been recruited as Arsenal’s new number nine, but Arteta insists he offers much more than just goals.

He told the club’s website: “I think it’s a package. Start with his character, the person, the smile and what he represents as a human being. Then he’s an incredible professional, with his work ethic and enthusiasm. You will see it the first day he puts on his boots and enters the training pitch; he has the enthusiasm that he is going to create on his own on that pitch.

“And then obviously there are his qualities, his anger to score, his willingness to be coached, to improve. He is used to winning and he knows that winning is the only way to do it. I think he will set different standards at the club.”

Arteta explains playing Tomiyasu as left-back

Mikel Arteta has explained the reason for playing Arsenal right-back, Takehiro Tomiyasu at left-back against Leeds United.

The Gunners had to show resilience in claiming a 2-1 win over the relegation candidates in the Premier League on Sunday.

Given the long-term absence of Kieran Tierney, Tomiyasu was tasked with filling in at left-back against the Elland Road club.

Asked about the switch for Tomiyasu, Arteta stated post-game, per the club website: “It was for today, we cannot do things thinking about the next game.

“We believe it was the right thing to do today with what we wanted to do in that side, especially what Leeds had on the side. “

  • Mikel Arteta places Leicester midfielder high on transfer list

Mikel Arteta places Leicester midfielder high on transfer list

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has placed Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans high on his transfer list.

The Mirror says Arteta, who signed a new three-year deal at the Emirates last week, wants to strengthen his midfield for what he hopes will be a first Champions League campaign for his club since 2017-18. And with Mohamed Elneny is out of contract this summer at Arsenal and doubts also surrounding Granit Xhaka’s future, Tielemans is firmly on his radar.

The Belgian will enter the final year of his contract with Leicester in July and the fact he is no closer to agreeing a new deal means there is a growing feeling within the East Midlands club that they will be best served cashing in on his services this summer.

Leicester are bracing themselves for offers, with Manchester United also linked. But if Arsenal can offer immediate Champions League football by finishing in the top four this season then they will be in the box seat to land the player who scored the winning goal in last season’s FA Cup final.

  • What convinced me about joining Arsenal – Ramsdale

What convinced me about joining Arsenal – Ramsdale

Arsenal goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale admits Mikel Arteta’s persistence convinced him about joining the North London side.

The goalkeeper moved to Emirates Stadium in the summer from Sheffield United after Arsenal agreed to pay an initial fee of around £24million.

After that offer was accepted, Ramsdale held talks with Arteta and he has revealed how the Spaniard convinced him to head to north London.

“The phonecalls [from Arteta] after the ball got rolling once the bid had been accepted were instrumental for me,” Ramsdale told That Peter Crouch Podcast.

“It’s not only the phone calls I had. As soon as I got there he told me to be myself and try and shake the changing room up and be confident.

“There were definitely people saying, ‘Hold on a minute’. I’d just been relegated for the second time and £24m is a lot of money, especially for what was reported as a No2. It was getting some criticism.

“I didn’t think when I signed that I’d be in straight away. The manager was up front with me and said, ‘It might take you a year, it might take you six months but we don’t see you as a No2, it just depends on how the team is doing’.

“I think thankfully for me we were in a tough moment at the start of the season and I got thrown in and I managed to just play with some of my confidence and stayed in the team.

“I think it always helps when, obviously, Bernd [Leno] is a top keeper and a professional, it’s so much easier to stay switched on.”

EPL: Arsenal manager Arteta reveals 10-year plan

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has set himself a ten-year target in the coaching job.

    Arteta turned 40 on Saturday.

When asked about his hopes for when he turns 50, the former midfielder told the Arsenal official website: “I think I will look older, that’s for sure! I will have some more grey hair but I think I will still have the same passion about what I do.

“Hopefully by then we will have been able to take the club to a different level. I hope we’ll have made our people very proud of what we’ve done.”

There will be hope that he can deliver on that dream, with plenty more to come from him and his young team in the future.

Arteta explains role in third goal after victory at Watford

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was delighted after their 3-2 win at Watford.

Arteta had a direct say in the 3-2 win, having an influence on Arsenal’s third goal.

He said, “Credit to Watford, they are fighting for their lives. They changed their team and it is hard to beat them.

“We are getting better and better, the understanding between the players is getting better and we should have scored more today.”

On his role in appearing to leave his technical area and throwing the ball to his players on the touchline before the third goal: “I saw the ball there and saw an opportunity to take an advantage. I don’t know if I should have done it but that is the way I live the game and I couldn’t help myself.

“I see how willing they [the players] are every day to train and improve. I think they are enjoying playing together and when some days, it is not your best day, you somehow manage to win and that is important.

“We have to be very honest with ourselves and our defensive structure was not good enough today. We allowed some chances and it is something we will work on.”

He added: “We had great attacking moments but I wasn’t pleased with our organisation. We didn’t dominate and play the way we wanted. Credit to Watford, but a lot of it was down to us; we should have done better and there is a lot to improve.”
