UEFA should stop relegating teams from UCL to Europa – Mourinho

AS Roma manager, Jose Mourinho, has criticized UEFA for creating another opportunity for teams who finished 3rd in their groups by taking them to Europa League.

According to the Portuguese gaffer, Champions League teams to go home when they get eliminated from the Europe top-flight competition instead of moving them to the Europa League.

The former Chelsea boss also claimed that it would be meaningless if teams that were relegated from the Champions League win the Europa League this season.

Recall that Roma won the maiden edition of the Europa conference League last season but now features in the Europa League this season.

The Portuguese said this following AS Roma’s Europa League round of 16 second-leg 0-0 draw against Real Sociedad on Thursday.

Recall that the likes of Manchester United, Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen and Sporting Lisbon were all relegated from the Champions League to Europe’s second top-flight competition this season.

Speaking with Sky Sport Italia, Mourinho said: “There are teams there who, in my view, should not be there. If they are eliminated from a competition, they should go home!

“So if the Europa League is won by a side [Man United, Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen, Sporting Lisbon] that went out of the Champions League, then it will be meaningless to me.”

Mourinho’s side will face Feyenoord in the Europa League quarter-final tie next month after the draw was conducted on Friday.

Mourinho wants Super Eagles star at Roma

AS Roma are looking at Leicester City forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, as an ideal option if they fail to sign Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham, according to Sky Sports.

Iheanacho only signed a new three-year deal with the Premier League side in April.

However, the Nigerian is now a target for Roma, who will be coached by Jose Mourinho from next season.

The Serie A club have already agreed a £34million deal with Chelsea for Abraham, but the 23-year-old is not very keen about the move.

Abraham fell out of favour after Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as head coach in January.

He was left out of the squad for the Champions League final against Manchester City, despite being fully fit.

Romelu Lukaku’s return to Stamford Bridge is set to push Abraham further down the pecking order.

Despite his limited game-time last season, Abraham finished as Chelsea’s joint-top scorer with 12 goals.

He is also reportedly attracting attention from Arsenal.

  • Roma wins! Barcelona knocked out of UEFA Champions League

It was nothing short of a shock on Tuesday night when Barcelona were knocked out of the Uefa Champions League by AS Roma.

The Catalan club had arrived the Italian capital with a three-goal lead after winning the first leg 4-1 but that away goal told.

Edin Dzeko’s goal in the first half was doubled by a De Rossi penalty in the second half. The Italian team, smelling blood, did not, however, lose its defensive shape but bid its time.

It was rewarded with a third and qualification-assuring goal in the 82nd minute off a header by Mostas Manolas.

They become the third team in Champions League history to overturn a three-goal deficit.

It was a night of upsets as at the same time in England, Liverpool came from behind to beat Manchester City 2-1 (agg 5-1) to qualify for the semi-final.
