Tuchel’s team falling back into Lampard ways – Ashley Cole

Chelsea legend Ashley Cole fears they’ve fallen back into bad habits after their FA Cup final defeat to Leicester City.

Youri Tielemans’ long-range strike earned the Foxes a 1-0 win over Chelsea, with Brendan Rodgers’ side winning the competition for the first time in their history.

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day after the game, Cole claimed that Chelsea’s recent performances under Thomas Tuchel have “felt the same” as some of their displays under Frank Lampard.

“Chelsea have three cup finals now basically, if they want to finish in the top four and win the Champions League,” Cole said.

“They have got to pick themselves up and go again. They can’t feel sorry for themselves.

“Is it the same team as Frank Lampard’s?

“When Frank was here they controlled and dominated games but couldn’t finish it off.

“The last couple of weeks it has felt the same.”

I’m more Ashley Cole than Roberto Carlos – Shaw

Manchester United fullback Luke Shaw has laughed off comparisons with Roberto Carlos.

Shaw’s impressive displays for Manchester United this season earned him the club’s Player of the Month awards for February and March, as well as an England recall.

“I’ve seen some things on it on social media and sometimes in my group chats my mates send me some stuff and I just laugh about it,” said Shaw, referring to the Roberto Carlos comparison.

“I can’t be compared to him, he was unbelievable! I’m aware of it and it’s nice to be even mentioned alongside his name, but I just laugh about it.”

Despite being compared to the Brazilian icon, left-back Shaw revealed the player he admired the most in that position was former Chelsea and England star Ashley Cole.

“Looking back at when I was growing up and my sort of era, and watching him a lot and basing my game a lot on him and what I wanted to be like as a player, then I would have to say Ashley Cole,” said Shaw.

“I’ve always been a massive fan of him and thought, when I was growing up, he was one of the best left-backs at that time.

“For me, as an all-round full-back, he was one of the best I’ve ever seen with attacking and defending, so I’d say Ashley Cole.”

Chelsea academy coach Ashley Cole has opened up on his private conversation with Ben Chilwell when he first arrived.

Chilwell, 23, has made a fine start to his Blues career since sealing a £50million move from Leicester in the summer.

“Defensively he’s been solid,” Cole said on Sky Sports ahead of the Blues’ win against Sheffield United. “He’s come into a side that was leaking goals with a lot of individual mistakes.

“Apart from Thiago Silva against West Brom the individual mistakes have been cut down.

“Chilwell, he can play in different areas of the pitch, he’s comfortable on the ball.

“I had a conversation with him and the first thing was ‘what do I need to make it at Chelsea’. He was so enthusiastic, he wanted to learn and he wanted to make it.

“We saw him at Leicester, that’s why Chelsea brought him and we’re seeing it now at Chelsea.”

Former Chelsea and Arsenal left-back, Ashley Cole scores his first FA Cup goal to give Derby hope in their fifth-round tie, but hosts Brighton hold on to secure a 2-1 victory and a place in the quarter-finals.

The 38-year-old played the second half of the match against Brighton, making only his second appearance since joining in January.

Derby coach, Frank Lampard described Cole as a “machine” after scoring in defeat to Brighton, and said they will need the defender for their Championship promotion push.

“He has been working hard. He wasn’t quite ready for 90 minutes today but that’s a great exercise he has given 45 minutes. I thought he was calm and assured on the ball. He has all the experience from his career and got his goal. It’s really good for us and we will need him.”
