My contesting 2023 presidential election is not about gaining power – Tinubu tells Senate APC caucus

National leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ahmed Bola Tinubu, has said his contesting as the presidential aspirant in the 2023 general election is “not about gaining power. It is about securing good government for the nation.”

He stated this on Wednesday while addressing the Senate APC caucus during a consultation visit to the National Assembly, Abuja.

He said: “Together, the executive and legislative branches of this democratic tree must strive to cultivate and bring forth good fruit for the welfare of the people. I have the experience, knowledge, vision, and resilience to lead the country.

“I seek your advice and counsel as stakeholders in this democratic journey. I seek your partnership in my quest to become the Presidential Candidate of our party and to win the general elections in February 2023 for all APC candidates.”

According to him, contesting the presidency is a herculean task, as he sought “Counsel, Partnership and Support” from Nigerian Senators. so that he could be properly guided for a successful February 2023 presidential election which he would be contesting.

Tinubu explained that he fought for democracy during the military era to the extent that he was jailed alongside many other freedom fighters, among whom were Senator Abu Ibrahim from Katsina State.

He described the parliament as a strategic component to a thriving democracy, recalling that his being at the National Assembly was like a homecoming having been a Senator in the past.

APC National leader stressed further that, though presiding over the nation was his lifetime ambition, the struggle also, was borne out of deep knowledge, vision and experience, which he believed would help him to provide good governance for the country.

While commending the ninth National Assembly under Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan’s leadership, Tinubu noted that the executive-legislature harmony which Lawan had ensured has created stability in the polity.

He noted that Senators have matched their works with their words, a development, he opined has put the All Progressives Congress-led government at an advantage ahead of other parties in Nigeria, adding that the APC will win the 2023 general election.

In his words: “The essence of representative democracy is the assemblage of the prudent and the wise to pass just laws for the benefit of the people. The legislation this body passes shall determine the fate of this nation.

From what I have seen of your work and words, I can truly say this nation has been in good hands. Thank you for advancing democratic good governance and fair elections.

“Thank you for electoral reforms, particularly the recent Electoral Act amendments, which include the greater use of technology in the electoral process. The cordial relationship between the National Assembly and the Executive is something to behold. Democracy does not thrive when both arms are adversarial. More gets accomplished through cooperation than conflict.

“You have passed landmark legislation such as the Petroleum Industry Act that rationalizes nearly every aspect of oil and gas production. Through your words and actions, you have demonstrated support for advancing democracy through bolstering the structures and processes of political parties, including our own.”

Reacting, the Senate President told the august visitor that Senators on the APC platform remain united more than in readiness to face the general election.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari has achieved a lot since he came to power in 2015 despite taking over governance at a period of deepened insecurity in the name.

Lawan assured Tinubu that APC will win presidency in 2023.

  • I sold APC to Nigeria- Tinubu brags

I sold APC to Nigeria- Tinubu brags

A stalwart of All Progressives Congress, APC, and presidential aspirant, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has said he sold APC to Nigeria to cure the nation of its sickness in 2015.

Tinubu, who paid homage to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, to receive royal blessings for his 2023 ambition, boasted that in 2015 he asserted that what some people could not do, APC will effortlessly deliver it.

In his words: “I sold APC to Nigeria. Nigeria you know in 2015 was sick and APC was used as a cure. You believed in us, accepted our commitment. We told you that things that some people could not do, we will effortlessly deliver it, we promise to mend the broken place so that we can all be happy.

I have informed President Buhari of this. I told him that I want to step in his shoe and not break a toe

“Today, outside the president, we the Yorubas, we are the highest and the most steady tribe that you can count on in the administration. But democracy is sincere to everybody. It is calendared in the constitution that four years is one tenure. And as a president and governor, it is only two terms, except for Honourables and Senators.

I am the quality that Nigeria is looking for to make this country very great

“Now the calendar is ticking. It is now the season, the period that Nigeria is looking for solid hope and change for progress, prosperity and growth. We need a lot of jobs, solid education for our children. We need progress for our country. We want somebody that can bring that.

“We have in our old national anthem that though tribe and tongues may differ, in brotherhood we stand; it has come that we must be solid in that. It has come that we must know that it is the same blood that is running in our veins irrespective of tribe and faith. We must have a good attitude for progress and prosperity.

“It is about honest service for our country that will bring progress; that will give us joy and prosperity. To individuals, you must find courage, determination, perseverance, you must find that fellow who will love you, respect you and prioritise national development. I ask myself who is better than me?

“This prompted me to come out, consult, and be ready to serve the country. I have been going round. I offer myself the opportunity to become the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I have informed President Buhari of this. I told him that I want to step in his shoe and not break a toe. I told him that I want to serve my country to the best of my ability.

“I am the quality that Nigeria is looking for to make this country very great, prosperous and united, not only in Africa but in the world. God has blessed us with all resources; human and materials. The only thing that is needed to streamline it for us is character.

“We must build that character of determination, resilience and perseverance. We must see ourselves as one nation that will bring prosperity for all. I will not let Nigerians down. I have the brain and capacity.

“If you hear them saying, can I do it? I am not applying for the job of a grave digger; not race running, I am not a horse. I am not applying for bricklaying. I went to school to study accountancy and management. I am applying for a job of the brain; intelligent thinking; it is a job for someone who is ready to do things right.

“The job I want to do for Nigeria is for Nigeria to be greater and be proud of our sons and daughters and leave a legacy of unlimited success.”

A massive crowd welcomed Tinubu, who was accompanied by Osun State governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, Senator Ajibola Bashiru, Commissioner for Regional Integration and Special Duties, Olalekan Badmus, and other political personalities.

In the remark of Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Oyetunji said, “with what I have seen, Tinubu is outstandingly fit, contrary to impressions that are flying around. You sold a good product for Nigeria in 2023.

“You sold a good product for us in 2015 and subsequently, you sold a good product for us in 2018 in Osun. I am with you. Osogbo is with you on this project.”

Tinubu stands for politics without bitterness – Makinde

The National leader of the All Progressive Party (APC), Bola Tinubu, on Saturday paid condolence visit to Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on the recent deaths of two prominent traditional rulers and a former Governor of Oyo State, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala.

Newsmen reports that the former Governor of Lagos State and some of his political associates visited Makinde at the State Government House, Agodi in Ibadan.

Makinde, while appreciating Tinubu for the visit, said that his action had proved that he stood for politics without bitterness.

According to him, this is the year political parties will elect their candidates toward the 2023 elections, but you visited here in spite of our political differences.

“During this political season, you may have to question yourself on why you need to come to the Oyo State Government House because people might have different interpretations to it.

“But, you sent a message across to me and I was delighted to host you in Ibadan.

“We really thank you for this visit and we have taken proper notice that you have risen above politics.

“And for your going around to come and share with us at this moment that we are grieving, we say thank you,” Makinde said.

He, however, wished Tinubu well in his political quest to govern Nigeria.

According to him, we want the best for this country and only the best is good enough at this particular time.

Earlier, Tinubu said the purpose of his visit was to condole with Makinde, his government and the entire people of Oyo State over the demise of the former Governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala and two traditional rulers- Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Jimoh Oyewumi Ajagungbade and the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji.

He said the departed traditional rulers and Chief Alao-Akala, would be greatly missed because of their contributions to the development of the state.

The former Lagos State Governor said that the reigns of the two prominent traditional rulers in Ogbomoso and Ibadan were peaceful, adding that they had contributed immensely to the peaceful atmosphere in the state.

He said that Alao-Akala equally contributed immensely to the political development and the love radiating within the political arena in the state.

Tinubu also commended Makinde for receiving him in spite of the short notice given for the visit, saying that the governor had demonstrated “good character”, which he said was rare.

“People get, sometimes, intoxicated with power and the arrogance of office can be overwhelming, but not with you; thanks for receiving us so quickly.

“With the demise of these three figures in Oyo State, we share in your loss.

“You, as the governor on the saddle of power, take responsibility for the situation here.

“I want to say we thank God that Ibadan had been peaceful and not ‘a den of violence’, but peaceful.

“Every other thing that has happened has taught us in the book of religion that we are just passing through and we will leave one day.

“But, no matter how long, it is difficult to absorb the loss easily,” Tinubu said.

Newsmen reports that the Oyo APC Governorship candidate in the 2019 election, Chief Bayo Adelabu; Sen. Soji Akanbi and James Faleke, were among those on the entourage of the APC national leader.

  • Ondo 2020: PDP hits hard at Tinubu over Dead Party comments

Ondo 2020: PDP hits hard at Tinubu over Dead Party comments

The Ondo state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised a National leader of the Ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Governor of Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu over his comments about the Party at an event in the State on Saturday.

Tinubu had described the PDP as a Dead Party, while urging the APC members at the Commissioning ceremony of the newly built revenue office of the state to nail it’s coffin by voting for the continuity of the governor Akeredolu led government in the October 10 election.

However, while responding to the former Governor, the PDP State PRO, Mr. Kennedy Ikantu Peretei in a statement made available to Nigerian cable news online on Sunday said Tinubu’s claim is laughable because it can only come out from the mouth of a day dreamer.

He said: “Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu while Commissioning the sole Project of Rotimi Akeredolu in Akure (Revenue House) said the PDP is dead. This claim is laughable because it can only come out from the mouth of a day dreamer.”

“The much hyped Flag off of the Akeredolu Campaign was apparently rejected not only by Ondo people but even the forces of nature that brought about torrential rainfall. Ironically, Tinubu and his hired crowd from Osun and Ekiti States symbolically took solace in umbrellas that dotted the entire Campaign ground.”

“Only last year, the PDP defeated the Buhari led APC roundly at the Presidential elections. The PDP also won two out of the three Senatorial Seats in Ondo State. How can such a party by any stretch of imagination be said to be dead?”

“It is shameful that the only project Tinubu came to Commission in three and half years is the Revenue House a building that stands as a sign post of multiple taxation of the Ondo State people 10% of which goes directly to the pocket of Akeredolu’s son.”

“The PDP is offering affordable education and health care delivery as against Aketi engineered astronomical tuition fees that have thrown many of the students in tertiary institutions out of school.”

“By October 10, Tinubu will know which Party is dead in Ondo State.” He added.

  • Buhari commends Ambode, inaugurates Ikeja Bus Terminal

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday at the inauguration of the Ikeja Bus Terminal commended Lagos State Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode for the development he had brought to the state in the space of three years.

Buhari, in his brief remarks during the ceremony, shortly after arriving the state for a two-day official visit, lauded Ambode for his reform in the area of public transportation.

Buhari said that the Federal Government, on its part, would adhere to its plan for the ports and other transport infrastructure in the country.

He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling security challenges, stabilising the economy, creating an enabling environment for jobs and returning Nigeria to its pride of place in the comity of nations.

In his remarks, Ambode specially thanked President Buhari for waiving the import duty on the five thousand air-conditioned buses which would be operated from the terminal.

He said the state looked forward to having an assembly plant for the buses in the next 20 months.

Ambode said his administration was committed to improving public transport infrastructure and management.

He said with the state’s bus reform project, 5,000 new buses would be introduced in the next three years.

According to him, 820 environmentally-friendly high-capacity buses, in the first phase, are expected by September.

In an address of welcome, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Ade Akinsanya, said the terminal was part of the bus reform initiative, based on recommendations of the 2015 Lagos Transport Summit.

The terminal has a concourse for arrival, ticketing, waiting and departure areas, loading bay, ATM gallery as well as food court and parking facilities.

It is designed to change the face of public transportation and will convey more than 200,000 passengers daily to over 22 destinations across the state.

The facility, which is sitting on 10,000 square metre-land space, is equipped with Intelligent Transport System (ITS), free Wi-Fi and electronically controlled shades, among others.

Through the ITS, intending passengers can be informed of the departure time and arrival of the next bus, which allows them to plan their movement.

The facility was designed and constructed by Planet Projects, an indigenous construction firm.

TheNewsGuru reports that the president had earlier arrived at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, to begin the visit to the state, amidst tight security.

The president’s plane landed at about 9.30a.m. at the Presidential Wing of the airport.

Buhari was welcomed by Ambode and top officers of the various security outfits at the airport, including the Nigeria Police, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Immigration Service, Nigerian Customs Service and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

He inspected a ceremonial guard of honour at the Presidential Wing before proceeding to the Ikeja Bus Terminus for the inauguration.

The president returned to the airport later and proceeded to Lagos Island via a chopper to attend a colloquium in honour of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Security operatives immediately re-opened access to the general aviation terminal of the airport which was earlier barricaded, shortly after the departure of the president for the colloquium.

Buhari received a rousing welcome from some Nigerians who lined up on the airport road to catch a glimpse of him.

The crowd chanted “Sai Baba ”, as the president’s motorcade made its way back to the airport after the inauguration of the bus terminal.
