Hadiza Bala Usman reportedly replaces Akume as SSG raises concerns

The National Development and Transparency Watch (NDTW) has raised concerns over recent political rumours suggesting the resignation of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, and his alleged replacement with Special Adviser on Policy Coordination to the President, Hadiza Bala Usman.

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Comrade Abiola Olaguntade Waheed, the group questioned the circumstances surrounding the speculation, describing it as unusual and possibly orchestrated.

The NDTW highlighted three factors it believes set this rumour apart from ordinary political gossip.

First, the timing — the news broke shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu embarked on an official trip abroad, a move the group said could have been calculated to create maximum political shock in his absence.

Second, the speed and breadth of the rumour’s circulation suggested a “well-choreographed operation,” with both mainstream and online platforms amplifying the claim within minutes.

Third, Wikipedia and other online profiling platforms reportedly updated their pages almost instantly — listing Senator Akume as a “former” SGF and Hadiza Bala Usman as the “serving” occupant of the role. Such updates, the group said, hinted at a degree of premeditation.

The group noted that Bala Usman has not publicly distanced herself from the speculation. Citing the legal maxim “Qui tacet consentire videtur” (“He who is silent is seen to consent”), the NDTW argued that her silence could be interpreted as tacit approval of the narrative.

While the Presidency, through spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, quickly dismissed the rumour, the group stressed that a personal rebuttal from Bala Usman would have further strengthened the denial.

Alleged Links to El-Rufai Fuel Suspicions
The statement also drew attention to Bala Usman’s past political associations — particularly her tenure as Chief of Staff to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and later as Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, appointments in which El-Rufai reportedly played a role.

The NDTW pointed out that El-Rufai, once an ally of President Tinubu, is now perceived as a leading critic and political rival ahead of the 2027 elections. It alleged that concerns have persisted within political circles over whether Bala Usman’s loyalty lies fully with the Tinubu administration or with her former boss.

The group claimed that sensitive political information unfavourable to the Tinubu presidency has, in the past, made its way to El-Rufai — suggesting the possibility of an internal leak.

According to the NDTW, elevating Bala Usman to the role of SGF could pose a political risk to the Tinubu administration.

“If Senator George Akume were to vacate the seat of Secretary to the Government of the Federation today, it would be tantamount to political suicide for President Bola Tinubu to put into that office one of such doubtful loyalty,” the statement warned.

The group urged the President and his advisers to exercise vigilance in appointments to sensitive political positions.

“Caution can never be considered excessive when the stability of a government is at stake,” Waheed said.

Kwankwaso slams Tinubu days after meeting with him in Aso Rock, says “he’s marginalizing North

Barely four days after visiting President Bola Tinubu, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has accused his administration of marginalising northern Nigeria by concentrating the country’s resources in the South.

Speaking during the Kano State Stakeholders’ Dialogue on the 2025 Constitutional Amendment on Thursday, Kwankwaso alleged that the federal government was unfairly directing national funds to one section of the country, while leaving the North under-resourced and neglected.

“A situation where the government is taking our resources and dumping it in one part of the country and other parts of the country are left just like that — I don’t believe that is the right thing to do by the government,” Kwankwaso said.

“This is the time for the government to convince our people that the government is not just on one side of the country.”

The former Kano State governor said information available to him suggests that “most of the national budget is now tilting in one direction in this country,” warning that the imbalance could worsen the challenges already facing the region.

He further cautioned that the North is already grappling with insecurity and poverty largely because of a lack of sufficient resources and poor management of what little it receives.

“Let me advise those who are struggling by all means to take everything to remember that some of the issues that we have in this part of the country today have to do with the lack of enough resources and mismanagement of the little that comes in,” he said.

“That is why we have insecurity, we have poverty, and so on. It is happening here mainly, but like a desert, it would go everywhere.”

Kwankwaso’s comments come amid ongoing concerns in northern Nigeria over perceived lopsidedness in appointments, project siting, and allocation of federal funds under the current administration.

  • Presidency clarifies report of Shettima barred from Aso Rock

Presidency clarifies report of Shettima barred from Aso Rock

The Presidency has reacted to reports alleging that Vice President Kashim Shettima was barred from gaining access to the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The spokesperson to the Vice-President, Mr Stanley Nkwocha, in a statement on Saturday debunked the reports that armed military units denied Shettima access.

According to him, such misinformation can only be entertained by those unfamiliar with the inner workings of the Nigerian government.

Nkwocha, therefore, urged the public to disregard such malicious publications and advised the media to continue to seek information from credible sources and approach sensational claims with the caution it deserves.

”This we owe ourselves collectively as a nation.”

He said that in recent times, there has been deliberate and well-planned orchestration of falsehood against the vice president’s person and office in many multidimensional forms.

”These mischievous and totally fabricated reports are all in a bid to cause confusion and insinuate total clash in the Presidency.

”These reports seek to mislead the public into believing there’s discord at the highest levels of government.

”The latest in this string of disinformation is a report claiming that the Vice-President has been refused entry to the Villa.

”This is a feeble attempt to traduce the person and office of His Excellency, Vice President Kashim Shettima. For the record, NOTHING OF THE SORT EVER HAPPENED.

”The recent publication by some obscure blogs alleging that armed military units have barricaded the Vice President from accessing the Presidential Villa is not only the wildest expression of wishful thinking.

“(It’s) a clear indication that the purveyors of these tales have exhausted both ink and imagination.”

Nkwocha said earlier this week, the Presidency dismissed similar fake news regarding responsibility for the circulation of campaign posters bearing the images of President Bola Tinubu.

” These stories reflect a desperate attempt to undermine the President and his Deputy’s fidelity to the rule of law and our constitution.

” Let it be known that those pushing these falsehoods do so in vain.

”It is understandable, though regrettable, that the mischief-makers continue to underestimate the strength of the bond and goodwill between the President and the Vice President.

”However, their questionable sources or habitual reliance on misinformation have once again led them astray.

”These fairy tales they publish serve no purpose beyond mischief and distraction.”

He said that Shettima remains focused on his duties and on supporting the President in achieving the aspirations of Nigerians.

” He does not have the luxury of time for distractions, particularly those born of the imagination of individuals intent on creating smoke where there is no fire.

” He’s not and will never partake in their media circus. It is a futile pursuit, even by the standards of the morally indifferent.”

Nkwocha commended Nigerians across all divides who continue to express goodwill towards the Tinubu’s administration and who have taken it upon themselves to fight the spread of fake news.

”Your trust and support are deeply appreciated. The covenant between this government and the citizens of Nigeria was made possible through a legitimate and constitutional process.

”No amount of falsehood or manufactured tension can shake the foundation of that democratic mandate. Not under the watch of President Tinubu.”

‘No vacancy in Aso Rock come 2027’ – Ex-lawmaker declares

A two-term former  Lagos State House of Assembly member,  Sir Jude Idimogu, says there will be “no vacancy” in Aso Rock come 2027.

Idimogu, who represented Oshodi-Isolo Constituency II between 2015 and 2023, made the declaration in an interview with NAN on Friday in Lagos.

He was reacting to the recent announcement by an opposition group, which vowed to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Idimogu, who is also the deputy leader of Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ndigbo, Lagos State, and APC member, said no alliance between opposition leaders could pose a significant threat to Tinubu’s re-election.

The former lawmaker described the coalition of opposition politicians against the second term aspiration of the president as nothing but an exercise in futility.

He noted that the ruling party had a strong leadership and grassroots support that would propel the party to victory in 2027.

Idimogu maintained that the president deserved a second term because he was building a legacy of sustainable development.

“In Nigeria, power is being rotated between the North and the South, so I believe it is the turn of the South to complete their eight years in office.

“So there is no vacancy in Aso Rock come 2027 and I am appealing to all the Northerners in the party to support the president to complete his eight years.

“Regarding the coalition, I can tell you, there is really no political gang-up that can unseat Tinubu in 2027,” he said.

Idimogu said that President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda was yielding positive results, hence he did not see the prospect of any opposition candidate reeling out anything better than his.

“I don’t know which of the candidates will come out today and reel out a policy that is better than what the administration of Tinubu is doing.

“This is because Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda is yielding positive results and we can see improved power supply.

“Our naira against the dollar is now gradually appreciating with the restoration of the naira-for-crude deal, and the export drive,” he said.

The ex-lawmaker also noted that the prices of food items were gradually reducing in the market with the implementation of favourable policies to increase farmers’ outputs.

“So I will give it to him (Tinubu). In two years’ time, I will be one of those that will quickly champion his re-election in 2027,” he said.

Idimogu advised the people behind the coalition to instead join hands with the president in the interest of the country.

  • A rot underrated – By Pius Mordi

A rot underrated – By Pius Mordi

    By Pius Mordi

Ensconced within the luxury confines of the Villa, awash with trillions of naira the kind never seen before, Aso Rock and the National Assembly have taken large doses of drugs to make them immune from the nightmare ordinary people are going through to keep going. Routine acknowledgement of the tough challenges facing the national economy turned out to mere platitudes.

To both arms of government, it was the duty of the people to stoically put up with the haunting hunger elicited by the decisions the government had taken. They were inevitable, the president said, if the country will turn the corner. The sacrifice will be made only by the people, but governance must go on as usual.

Luxury is a natural quest. It is usually the reward for entrepreneurship and investments into money yielding ventures. Successful business owners display their success by splurging their lifestyle with luxury living. Nobody begrudges them because they worked for it. Luxury is associated with successful business people. It elicits a level of jealousy from government who responds by imposing additional taxes on them.

However, those associated with luxury now are not those with in any productive venture. They do not own or manage any factory or productive enterprise. They made no investments that may create wealth but one that creates dubious wealth for them. They are politicians that got elected into public office or got appointed to work for the elected people. With the snap of a finger or the red pen of a President or Governor, they suddenly start living in luxury, obscene luxury.

Plato condemned the confusion of values that reside in a taste for material privilege. To love luxury, he said, is to love power, possession, and appearances. All things that the wise spurn. In Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s view, luxury corrupts morals. According to him, there are  physiological effects, with men becoming soft and effeminate, hiding their bodies – deformed through excessive languishing – beneath vile ornaments. Luxury favours pride: everyone wants to stand out by possessing frivolous objects. When that level of luxury is inordinately exhibited by public office holders who make no contribution to wealth creation, it riles the people. In civilised climes, overnight luxury by public officers is frowned upon, often investigated and punished.

Not in Nigeria. Here, getting into public office grants access to public treasury which affords such persons to acquire inordinate luxury and flaunt it. For an economy on a cliffhanger, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did what he thought was the cure all: remove petrol subsidy and float the naira. As the ill-timed measures spiralled into a catastrophic inflation, he embarked on the disastrous acquisition of luxury projects for himself and his acolytes. Members of the National Assembly duly obliged with every item of luxury he sought. They had their own wish list that could not raise eye brows in a compromised Villa.

The first set of projects saw the approval of N21 billion to rebuild the Vice President’s official residence. Then he spent N1.9 billion for the purchase of SUVs for his wife’s office and her retinue of staff, despite the constitutionmaking no provision for such office. On the other hand, the National Assembly got N71 billion for each member to acquire their own SUV. The scandalous level of acquisition of luxury by both arms are well documented on the public domain. Does the expenditure match Tinubu’s stance that Nigerians should brace up and bear the nightmare further? Only Tinubu and his inner circle do not know this: They have lost touch with the society. And having surrounded himself with his usual crowd from his days as Lagos Governor, all he has access to is the alternative scenario they chose to paint for him.

This much he demonstrated in his address in the course of the #Endbadgovernance strife. Rather than address the issues raised by the protesters, Tinubu spent more than half of address talking about what he has done in the past 14 months. It was like a lap of honour for him and he seemed at a loss that people are complaining when he should be applauded for, by his perception, having achieved much. I think Tinubu just confirmed Senator Ali Ndume’s stance that he has been caged inside Aso Rock and has no idea what Nigerians are going through.

His aides led by Bayo Onanuga still see the protests as politically motivated. He even accused Peter Obi of Labour Party of instigating the protests. Godswill Akpabio, Senate President, even had made fun of the protesters as people wasti their time while he and his fellow makers are chopping.

What the administration is exhibiting is the inevitable outcome where the quest for luxury by holders of public office outweighs the task of working for the people. The display of conspicuous consumption is now seen on its most crude form by the people and they have had enough.

Temporary reprieve may come with the six-month suspension of duties on imported food items to force prices down. In an administration with still three years to go, the measure is too pedestrian and ineffectual. Tinubu is still detached from reality. He adopts any measure to win him broader support, no matter how weird. That is why he chose to create a Ministry of Livestock just to curry favour at a time commonsense dictates that he should at least cut down the cost of governance. His promise to cultivate 10 million hectares of land for farming is a mirage in the prevailing atmosphere of gross insecurity. He has to connect with the people, not mere platitudes as are the vibes from him.

Akpabio, Kalu lead senators to Villa, brief Tinubu on outcome of IPU assembly, hail President on victory at S’Court +Photos

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu Saturday night led the Nigerian delegation to the just concluded Inter-Parlientary Union (IPU) held in Luanda, Angola to the Presidential Villa, Abuja to brief President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the outcome of the event.

Recall that Akpabio was elected into the Executive committee of the IPU, having been nominated by Kalu at the 147th legislative assembly for the executive position.

The development ultimately led to the breaking of a 59year- old jinx of Nigeria’s absence into the decision making organ of the global parliamentary body.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Levinus Nwabughiogu stated that earlier on their arrival from Angola via Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport, Abuja, both top Nigerian lawmakers told journalists of their exploits at the assembly, saying Nigeria has now taken her rightful place in the comity of nations.

Akpabio also said that Nigeria’s membership into IPU’s top committee will create job opportunities for Nigerians.

He revealed that President Tinubu was consulted on their decisions while in Angola.

“A lot of employment opportunities will be created. A lot of offices will be opened. Sub national offices will be oppend and a lot of children who wish to be diplomats will have the opportunity of working there and it will also attract foreign direct investment in the area of training and retraining and capacity building not just for the legislators but for people who are in different fields. It’s quite a lot actually. The benefits are enormous. We thank God.

“And it is something we should dedicate to the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu because it was happening at this time. And we were also consulting and briefing him on what was going on and there were very critical decisions we had to make sure that he was involved as the President of the country because that was an international body. You can’t take a wrong step”, the Senate President had said.

Speaking on the recent electoral victory of Tinubu, Akpabio congratulated the President and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He urged the President’s opponents to join hands with him in building the nation.

“We were very glad to receive the report of the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Supreme Court. So, we use this opportunity on arrival on the Nigerian soil to also congratulate him and our party, APC. We had no doubt that he won the election. We had no doubt that this was the will of God for Nigeria. And we pray that God will give him the wisdom, the health and sound mind to pilot the affairs of this country for the next 4 years. And we are also praying that those who contested against him up to turn courts to see the need to drop all their hatchets and join to build a greater Nigeria particularly at a time of this kind of economic difficulties. So, congratulations to us. Congratulations to Mr. President”, he said.

    Signed:

Levinus Nwabughiogu, Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Federal Republic of Nigeria.
