Presidential visit: What Buhari and I discussed indoors – Pastor Bakare

Founder of Citadel Global Community Church (CGCC), formerly Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare on Friday visited and subsequently held a behind the door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

The outspoken clergy after the meeting with the president said restructuring Nigeria can take place without violence.

According to the Serving Overseer of the CGCC, although Nigeria is better off as one nation, such unity must be based on equity, justice, fair play and the rule of law.

Bakare’s statement is a reiteration of his support for the idea of restructuring the country.

Earlier this year, the cleric in one of his State of the Nation addresses was of the opinion that “we have failed to realise that a strong federal government working with strong federating units can guarantee the security and prosperity of the Nigerian people”.

In his view, “we have failed to appreciate the fact that coordinated governance by the different states in each of the geopolitical zones will enhance the security of Nigerians and bring our people out of poverty.

According to him, “this is the heart and soul of restructuring”.

He went on to explain that restructuring does not mean the dismemberment of the Nigerian state.

“It is not an attack on Nigerian unity. It does not mean disadvantaging any section of the country,” the CGCC founder explained.

While briefing newsmen on Friday, Bakare also explicitly criticized the debate over power rotation describing it as politically immature.

He noted that the idea of zoning has never benefited the region where the power was resident.

He said selecting a leader should be more about what the candidate has to offer. regardless of region.

The cleric called on the best of Nigerians to present themselves for future elections.

Pastor Bakare also called for the adoption of electronic voting to ensure that no Nigerian of eligible voting age, including those in the Diaspora, are disenfranchised.

He hailed the Senate for reversing its decision on the electronic transmission of election results, adding that the country should go one step further and adopt electronic voting.

On whether he would contest the 2023 presidential election, he said his plans have been made known to the president alone.

He further noted that he would contest if God and Nigerians wants him to.

Pastor Bakare, who has recently criticized the current administration, was Buhari’s running mate under the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in 2011.

A few days ago, the cleric asked President Buhari to do away with the 1999 constitution, saying it is a great inhibitor of the nation’s progress.

“Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall! Mr. Gorbachev eventually did, and Germany is better off for it today.

“In the same spirit, I say to President Muhammadu Buhari: Mr President, stop passing the buck to the National Assembly.

“Tear down this inhibiting concoction of a constitution; tear it down so we can build a truly great nation,” Bakare said at what he said might be the last state of the nation address from his church auditorium.

According to the founding pastor of the CGCC, “this is one enduring legacy” that the Buhari-led administration can still secure before their time in power draws to a close.

Bakare further argued that if President Buhari does thrash the 1999 constitution, present and unborn generations of Nigerians will remember him for it and write his name in gold when the history of the period is written.

On the other hand, he stated that if the president fails to heed the call, then, “history will record that you failed to rise to the occasion and squandered a great opportunity”.

Throwing more light on the need to get rid of the 1999 constitution, Pastor Bakare asserted that the constitution was erroneous to say the unity of the nation was not negotiable.

While details of the meeting remain unclear, it may not be unconnected to the Pastor’s recent calls for more unity in the country.

Last Sunday, he had urged President Muhammadu Buhari to do away with the 1999 Constitution, saying it is a great inhibitor of the nation’s progress.

He made the call on Sunday during a state of the nation address which he titled: ‘The black box of Nigeria’s politics’.

He said, “Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” Mr. Gorbachev eventually did, and Germany is better off for it today.

“In the same spirit, I say to President Muhammadu Buhari: Mr President, stop passing the buck to the National Assembly. Tear down this inhibiting concoction of a constitution; tear it down so we can build a truly great nation”.

During the same church service, Pastor Bakare announced the launch of the Nigeria for Nigerians (N4N) movement.

According to him, the movement became imperative because it is time for Nigerians to take the reins and direct their nation’s destiny.

He was a running mate of the Buhari under the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in 2011.

…Buhari commends them on stance on Nigeria’s unity

President Muhammadu Buhari has commended the leadership of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) on their recent affirmation of belief in a united Nigeria and supporting the fight against insecurity by developing internal control mechanisms.

The president gave the commendation when he received the National Executive of INC led by Prof. Benjamin Okaba, in the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Thursday.

He implored the leadership of the association to use its influence ‘‘in making sure that we keep working together to keep this country a united, indivisible entity, so that we can tackle our problems together and overcome our challenges together.’’

Buhari also addressed some demands of the association on several issues including environmental degradation, restructuring, creation of states, allocation of operational licenses for marginal fields to Ijaw people, inauguration of the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), among others.

On the Hydrocarbon Remediation Project, the president said he had directed the Federal Ministry of Environment to ensure that “the remediation efforts in Ogoni are implemented with a high percentage of local content and inclusion of the surrounding communities.’’

According to him, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, under the same ministry of environment, is working to ensure that oil spills are reduced and new ones prevented.

He also directed all relevant agencies of government to ensure that they enforce compliance to international best practices by the International Oil Companies.

Addressing their call for immediate restructuring, the president noted that “the National Assembly whose responsibility it is to ensure that the constitution responds to the call for a restructured Nigeria has already concluded regional consultations.

‘‘As soon as they finalise the process, necessary action would not be delayed on my part.’’

On the creation of two additional states and more local government areas for the Ijaw people, Buhari said “it is a legislative matter, which should naturally be handled by the National Assembly with concurrence at the state levels’’.

On the allocation of operational licenses for marginal fields to Ijaw people, the president said while he completely agreed with the demand, ‘‘the process of granting licenses is guided by laid down rules and regulations, most of which even favour local content and local contractors.

“I see no reason why they should not be granted such licenses if they qualify.’’

On NDDC, he pledged that the Board would be inaugurated as soon as the “forensic audit report is submitted and accepted’’.

He added: ‘‘A contentious issue that has been a subject of discourse amongst the Ijaw people of recent has been the need for the Niger Delta Development Commission to live up to its billing by delivering the required succour to the people of the region.

‘‘Based on the mismanagement that had previously bedeviled the NDDC, a forensic audit was set up and the result is expected by the end of July, 2021.

‘‘I want to assure you that as soon as the forensic audit report is submitted and accepted, the NDDC Board will be inaugurated.

‘‘However, I would like to implore you that the Ijaw National Congress should play a more active role in making sure that the mismanagement that occurred in the past is not repeated.’’

The president also assured the leadership of INC that the completion of the East-West Road would remain top on his infrastructure agenda.

He, however, observed that the occasional disturbances by youths in some communities along the route of construction work would require the close attention and guidance of leaders in the region.

‘‘Furthermore, we have made considerable progress with the construction of the Bonny to Port Harcourt Bridge,’’ he said.

In his remarks, Prof. Okaba urged the president to mandate the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to direct the relocation of the headquarters of all oil companies to their operational bases in Ijaw land and the Niger Delta region.

‘‘The excuse of insecurity is no longer tenable for it is common knowledge that nowhere in Nigeria is safer than the other.

“Secondly, the revamping of the major ports at Onne, Warri, Port Harcourt, Bonny will accelerate economic growth, reduce joblessness, youth criminality and contribute to national unity and stability,’’ he said.

While reaffirming strong faith in the ‘‘overall and mutual benefits of true federalism and resource control to the prosperity and stability of Nigeria,’’ Okaba assured the president that the Ijaws ‘‘have no secessionist agenda.’’
