APC aspirants for by-election reject imposition, issue 48-hour ultimatum

Some aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State have rejected the choice of Adewale Olatunji Murphy, as the party’s candidate for the Aug. 16, Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election.

The aspirants under the aegis of United Ibadan North Federal Constituency Aspirants Forum, told newsmen on Monday in Ibadan, that Murphy was allegedly imposed on them.

NAN reports that the six aspirants present at the conference are Olusegun Olaleye, Saheed Aderounmu, Adekunle Oladeji, Oluyinka Omikunle, Idris Lapade and Khalil Mustapha Repete.

They warned the party’s national leadership to reverse the imposition within 48 hours or face consequences, including internal rebellion and voter apathy during the Aug. 16 by-election.

The aspirants condemned the selection of Murphy without a primary election, threatening fallout if the party’s national leadership fails to urgently address the unfolding crisis.

The aggríeved aspirants described the alleged imposition of Murphy as a breach of democratic norms and party guidelines.

Aderounmu, one of the aspirant, accused the National Working Committee of the party of sidelining due process and opting for a backdoor endorsement of an unpopular candidate.

They accused the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, of complicity in the alleged imposition, urging him to publicly distance himself to protect his credibility and party unity.

The group said that they have unanimously adopted Khali Mustapha Repete as their consensus candidate, insisting he emerged through transparent consultation with stakeholders and grassroots members in the constituency.

The group cited President Bola Tinubu’s emergence through democratic primaries, they urged the APC leadership to emulate his example and preserve the party’s integrity in Oyo State.

The aspirants reaffirmed their loyalty to APC but vowed to resist any undemocratic decision, insisting that party victory lies in justice, openness, and respect for the people’s choice.

Others were Chief Rahman Owokoniran as Secretary and Caroline Akinsete as Administrative Secretary.

Egwu, who is a former governor of Ebonyi, told newsmen around 3.30pm that all the aspirants presented themselves for screening.

He, however, said some of the aspirants, whose documents were not complete, promised to come back to complete the aspect of documentation.

He said that the committee would present its report to the party after the conclusion of the exercise.

“We feel like everyone should have a level playing ground, with no opportunity to say they were screened out deliberately.

“The screening is going on till 5pm pm today. PDP is the party that wants to give people opportunity provided you play by the rules of the game.

“If a candidate tells us he forgot a document and he is going to bring his document before 5pm, Why not?

“We don’t want to give them the impression that the party has a candidate it supports. Only few persons are involved in this case,” he said.

However, Egwu refused to speak again with newsmen after the conclusion of the exercise by 6pm.

Though, none of the aspirants spoke with newsmen, only two of them, Ebiseni and Ajayi displayed their clearance certificates before the camera.

  • Edo 2024: As Esan aspirants sabotage governor for deputy – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Edo 2024: As Esan aspirants sabotage governor for deputy – By Ehichioya Ezomon

The hopes of Esan people of Edo Central senatorial district – that the 2024 governorship election will redeem the marginalisation of Esanland in the governance of Edo State – may be fizzling, or have fizzled out due partly to alleged handiwork or machination of some vauntily-ambitious Esan aspirants.

Of the three leading political parties that intend to field candidates for the September 21, 2024, election, the main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state has dissed the idea of zoning the governorship to Edo Central that comprises Esanland.

The state ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the new opposition Labour Party (LP) – both battling internal division – have been nonplussed on ceding the governorship to Edo Central, even as Governor Godwin Obaseki is reported to be supporting the aspiration of an Esan, Mr Asue Ighodalo, a lawyer-businessman.

As reported by New Telegraph on December 4, the APC gave the clarification on December 3 when it received, at the party secretariat in Benin City, an aspirant for the governorship, Prince Kassim Afegbua, a former Commissioner for Information and spokesman to former Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.

The state secretary of the party, Mr Lawrence Okah – fielding questions on expectations of the APC from its numerous aspirants – told journalists that, “What we are looking for is capacity and the ability to deliver, and that is why we said there is no zoning; that is the message.”

Okah asked the aspirants to play by the rule and avoid utterances against each other, as the February 1 to 24, 2024, “primary is an internal contest among members of the same family,” from which “the party is going to pick only one (aspirant) and the rest will work with the one that has been picked.”

Still, zoning of the governorship isn’t the sole unfair “comeuppance” for the Esan people. Lately, revelations emerged that some Edo Central aspirants are “undermining the ‘Esan Agenda’ (to occupy the office of Governor in 2024) with their plot to pick up the position of deputy governor.”

A chieftain of the APC and leader of the party in Edo Central, Major General Cecil Esekhaigbe (retd), on December 21 revealed the scheme by the so-called Esan aspirants – who should lead the charge for redemption of Esan people – to sabotage the chances of Esanland to produce the governor in 2024.

Mr Esekhaigbe also accused other senatorial zones of ganging-up against Edo Central, “with the slogan of competence, as against the agitation of zoning to Central,” even as he said he’d come under attacks by some of the aspirants “who only scheme for the slot of deputy governor.”

Esekhaigbe noted that some aspirants, who willingly participated in the screening to prune the number of aspirants in the APC, suddenly turned against him, wondering, “Why will a man deny he was invited for an exercise which he deliberately skipped? Why will a man who, knows his constitutional limitations of tenure, continue to deceive himself? Is Esan looking for a one-term Governor?

“Can a man, who is still on active service of a corporate organisation, come and take precedence over the men who have kept the party for years? Let us be wise and take a bold decision towards our quest for Esan Governor. No avalanche of insults on me will give you the ticket.”

Esekhaigbe alleged that some Esan political leaders are “deliberately sowing seeds of discord to the advantage of the other senatorial districts,” saying, “Let us have a conversation today on our best for the job. Tomorrow may be too late. Those calling me names today would remember this day tomorrow.

“Take the message and forget the messenger. We need only one man for the job. Edo Central needs the APC ticket, and so are other parties in Esanland. I repeat, with emphasis, that all the aspirants cannot get the ticket. Only one aspirant will get the ticket.”

But Esekhaigbe sounds undemocratic in attempting to exclude some aspirants on the basis of newness or inactivity in the party; not resigning from their corporate organisations when they aren’t public officials, as stipulated by law; or plotting for a single term with regard to term limitation, and yet, he promotes longevity in politics over competence.

Regardless, how can political leaders – who’ve cried over marginalisation of Esanland in Edo governorship, especially since 2016 – spurn an opportunity to right the obvious wrong by sabotaging the process for selfish interest?

How will leaders of Edo South, comprising of the Bini-speaking stock, and Edo North of the Afemai lineage, take Esan people seriously if – before the whistle is blown for the primaries – they’ve abdicated their governorship aspiration for the Osadebey Avenue Government House seat of power in Benin City, capital city of Edo State?

Was it the intention, from the get go, by the alleged “aspirant-sellouts” to make up the numbers as “also ran,” or they’re genuinely afraid of losing the primaries to more qualified Esan aspirants? If the first alternative is the answer, it means they’re unworthy of the exalted office of Governor of Edo State.

If the second option is their dilemma, the best and dignified route is to quit the race, rather than constitute a stumbling block to the ambition of those that have the genuine interest of Esanland, which hasn’t produced a Governor of Edo State – at least since 1999.

Why won’t the aspirants go through the primaries, to test their “political prowess and sagacity,” and know where they stand in the reckoning of Esan people, and Edolites as a whole? Instead, they want to give a carte blanche – or undeserved bonus – to the people of Edo South and Edo North – who’ve shown, over the years, that they’re adept strategists in the political power game in Edo State!

The two senatorial districts – with their individual superior voting strength – have learnt to outsmart and outmaneovre Edo Central in the political arena. And unless the Esan people demonstrate enough seriousness with a matching political machine, the two zones will rotate the governorship between them every eight years.

While Edo South would’ve occupied the governorship for 16 years (Governor Lucky Igbinedion, 1999-2007, and Governor Godwin Obaseki, 2016-2024); and Edo North has governed for eight years (Governor Adams Oshiomhole, 2008-2016), Edo Central hasn’t ruled the state.

The erroneous impression of Edo Central having ruled for 17 months (2007-2008) through Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor isn’t known to law, as his short occupation of the governorship was annulled by the courts in 2008.

Save “ego trip,” and a “political arrangement” to cloak Osunbor as a “former Governor of Edo State,” – and illegally award him the emoluments of the office – Esanland hasn’t produced a Governor since 1999. Which makes compelling the imperative for political parties to zone the governorship to Edo Central in the lead-up to the primaries of February 1 to 24, 2024.

But how will any of the parties zone the governorship to Edo Central when some indigenes plot only for the deputy governor’s slot? According to President Bola Tinubu, “power is not given a la carte,” – or freedom of choice, say by Esanland, for the governorship. It’s a battle of the fittest and the most determined!

The Saviour Jesus Christ enjoins in Matthew 7:7-8 (KJV) that: “7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh receiveth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.”

If Esan Central leaders don’t want power in 2024, why should Edo South and Edo North offer them the governor or deputy governor as compensation for alleged marginalisation of Esanland? The two zones would rather pair themselves for governor and deputy governor. Which makes more political sense at the poll, given their superior voting numbers!

In the 2024 election cycle, the Esan people should avoid the recurring tales of blame and regrets by doing the right and best thing now! Otherwise, the “sellers” of Edo Central governorship to Edo South and Edo North will be the ones to re-echo “marginalisation of Esanland” the day after September 21, 2024, election!

2024: Edo PDP puts aspirants on red alert, insists Obaseki has no right to swear-in successor

The Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has placed all its guber aspirants on red alert declaring that outgoing governor, Godwin Obaseki lacks constitutional powers to swear-in his successor.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports this fresh development was contained in a statement issued and signed by the party’s publicity scribe, Vasco Ogie on Saturday.

In the statement, the party pointedly told Obaseki that it’s the state’s Chief Judge that has the absolute right to swear-in his successor as his style of governance lacks equity and justice.

    Read full statement below:

“The Edo chapter of PDP wishes to inform the general public and teeming supporters that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has published its timetable for the conduct of the Governorship election in Edo State in 2024. We call on all our intending aspirants to take note of the timelines of activities.

“On Friday 29th September 2023, the Governor of Edo State, HE Godwin Obaseki addressed journalists and expressed his desire to “finish strong” and swear in a successor on November 11th 2024. We politely disagree here and make bold to state that it is the Chief Judge that has the constitutional duty to swear in who will succeed him.

‘The Governor further stated that, “It is not in my place to now determine, appoint or anoint any successor but all I know is that in the process of seeking my successor, there must be fairness, equity, and a sense of inclusion because our goal is to keep Edo as one”. On this we agree completely with the Governor. Our only reservation on this is that he has NOT exhibited fairness, equity and justice in conducting the affairs of government since his assumption of office.

“We hereby assure Edo people that the ideals of “fairness, equity, and a sense of inclusion” mentioned above are the hallmarks of PDP which will not be lost in our quest to nominate a gubernatorial candidate in 2024, from amongst our committed and dedicated Party loyalists who have stood by the Party all these years. Our nominee will be a candidate acceptable to all Edo people. The guidelines of the Party will be strictly adhered to in nominating the candidate.

“While we await the publication of the guidelines for activities from the National Working Committee, we assure all our party faithful that we shall conduct a free and fair process to pick a candidate in February 2024.

    Signed
    Vasco Ogie
    State Publicity Secretary

  • APC presidential primary: Real reason Tinubu floored other 13 aspirants

The real reason why Bola Ahmed Tinubu, frontline presidential aspirant at the just concluded APC presidential primaries floored other aspirants has emerged.

TheNewsGuru .com, (TNG) reports more facts emerged on Wednesday as to how Tinubu floored the other 13 aspirants despite the consensus diversionary tactic that initially reared its ugly head when APC national chairman announced the name of Ahmad Lawan as the consensus candidate.

A top political notcher in the North gave a vivid account of how the Tinubu campaign train started planning on how to ensure he emerges as the APC flag bearer two years ago.

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal made this revelation explaining how the Tinubu group started massive consultation in 2020 on how to win this primary.

He said “we started early enough and I knew it was virtually impossible to lose at this stage after the hard work and energy exerted to get this far.

“For instance, in the South-South we only have away Rivers State to Rotimi Amaechi but for Bayelsa, it was a done deed, Delta, Akwa Ibom we initially left it for Akpabio but after joining us today we are sure of at least 80percent and Edo we were sure of 80percent compliant.

“Then across the north, we were sure of 60percent compliant because as of two weeks ago 1407 delegates were already in our kitty but with the turn of events here today I can boastfully say that we already have 1900 votes.

“We under projected by 100 delegates and that position has not changed but as the voting is ongoing we are still very sure of victory for Tinubu.

“As you know every politician goes into an election to win but in this case, Tinubu had a political structure that you can’t fault because it has a national spread.

Asked how did the Tinubu camp capture the southeast delegates despite not going there, Lawal said” it was easy for us because we had critical stakeholders and governors working for us in the region.

“Three days to primaries we invited some of these delegates to Abuja and several calls were made to critical stakeholders too.

“Where we can’t reach some of the stakeholders we call Tinubu to help us out and he was always willing to make such calls.

“Tinubu has a political structure that’s truly national so we had no problem penetrating the northeast, north-central, northwest, southwest, southeast, and the south-south.

APC clears 13 presidential aspirants out of 23

The All Progressives Congress (APC) says only 13 aspirants, out of 23 have been cleared to contest for the party’s ticket in the upcoming Presidential Primary Election.

Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Chairman of the seven-man 2023 APC Presidential Screening Committee, announced this on Friday in Abuja, while submitting the report of the committee to the party’s leadership.

Odigie-Oyegun, however, did not mention the names of the aspirants that were cleared or those that were not cleared by the committee.

Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, the APC National Chairman while receiving the report, said it would be looked into by the party’s leadership.

The 23 presidential aspirants appeared before the Odegie-Oyegun-led committee that sat for two days.

Some of the aspirants include; Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State and national leader of the party, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and Mr Rotimi Amaechi, who until recently was, the Minister of Transportation.

Others are; ex-governor of Akwa Ibom and former Minister of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Sen. Godswill Akpabio, former Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu and former Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba.

The cleared aspirants are to contest the party’s 2023 presidential ticket at its presidential primary scheduled to hold between June 6 and June 8, at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

  • APC aspirants petition Adamu over screening denial

APC aspirants petition Adamu over screening denial

Aggrieved House of Assembly aspirants in Ebonyi on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has petitioned Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, National Chairman of the party over alleged screening denial.

Mr. Chukwuoji Igodo, leader of the group said at a press briefing on Sunday in Abakaliki that no fewer than 25 aspirants were allegedly denied screening by the screening committee.

He added that every effort made by the aspirants to draw the attention of the state chairman of APC, Chief Stanley Okoro-Emegha to their plights proved unsuccessful.

He further alleged that there was an orchestrated ploy by the state leadership of the party to deny some members opportunity to participate in the 2023 general elections.

He explained that their ordeal started when the party announced sales of nomination and expression of interest forms for the House of Assembly.

He alleged that the party denied selling nomination and expression of interest forms to them forcing them to purchase their forms in Abuja.

He said: “The problem started when the party announced sales of forms for the House of Assembly and we approached the party to purchase our forms here in the state and they didn’t sell any form to us.

“So, we approached Abuja and bought our forms from there which is allowed by the party rules, we filled our forms there and submitted.

“We presented ourselves for the screening which was held on Saturday but nobody from the screening committee attended to us nor addressed us; till now we have not been screened and nobody is telling us anything.”

He maintained that the party was not fair to the affected aspirants.

“We have been told that they will only respond to the 24 aspirants the party sold the forms to which is very unfair to us.

“We are saying that the chairman is allowing himself to a particular set of people in the party instead of being the chairman for everybody.

“We also want the world to know that the party in Ebonyi is sabotaging the efforts of the national leadership and it’s a great betrayal to some of us that have protected and promoted the government.

“We, therefore appeal to the national secretariat to listen to us and send a special screening panel to screen us; send screening panel for the primaries and also send a special panel for the local government congresses that will soon hold.”

The aspirants condemned the outrageous fees demanded for the screening of aspirants in the state which they noted were not part of the party’s requirements for the screening exercise.

“For some of us, we are told that we have to pay N200, 000 as internally generated revenue; N200, 000 for local government clearance, and another N500, 000 for state clearance; this is aside from the N2million the party charges for her form.

“And we are saying that these fees are not part of the checklists the party gave to us at the purchase of our forms; we are saying that the national leadership should look into what is happening in Ebonyi,” Igodo said.

The aspirants said the development could lead to crisis that might affect the party’s chances in the 2023 general elections.

The group, therefore, called on the national leadership to urgently intervene to stave off the looming crisis in Ebonyi APC.

Meanwhile, Okoro-Emegha in a swift reaction, said that the screening committee was yet to be inaugurated by the national secretariat.

“The screening committee is yet to be inaugurated hence the screening exercise could not commence in Ebonyi as scheduled,” Okoro-Emegha said.

He added that the party believed in equity, fairness, and justice saying that the party would not deny genuine aspirants from being screened.

He urged the aspirants to work with the party in unity to achieve victory in the coming elections.

“Instead of creating problems and causing disunity in the party, they should rather become agents of unity and work to make our party achieve victory in 2023.

  • PDP and the dangers of disqualification of aspirants – By Zayyad Muhammad

PDP and the dangers of disqualification of aspirants – By Zayyad Muhammad

    By Zayyad Muhammad

Justice, fairness, and the entrenchment of internal democracy are the oils that lubricate the survival of any political party- no matter how big and strong is the party.

There are strong rumors and insinuations that some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) at the instance of some governors are hell-ben on disqualifying some aspirants in favor of some incumbent and unpopular governors, in spites of the fact that the party constituted 12-man Appeal Panel have in their report submitted to the NWC, cleared the aspirants. This is not only unjust but a clear disregard for the party’s guidelines and in violation of the constitutional amendments of the electoral act 2022. Thus denying other bonafide aspirants the right to participate in the primaries slated for May 23, 2022, and the indeed the electorates the right to elect candidates of their choice.

Reliable information from some quarters within the party indicates that two aspirants from Adamawa and Akwa Ibom states are being targeted for disqualification just to pave way for an unpopular incumbent governor and a Governor’s preferred choice to participate in the gubernatorial primaries unopposed.

Denying party members the right to participate in the primaries is dangerous and undemocratic. Take for instance, Ambassador Mohammed Jameel Abubakar- Waziri former state Chief of Protocol to former President Goodluck Jonathan, was said to have been disqualified in Bauchi by the Gubernatorial Primaries Screening Committee chaired by Abubakar Sadiq on the flimsy excuse that the committee has ‘ Instructions from the party Headquarters not to clear him’. The aspirant was neither issued a disqualification nor qualification certificate; contrary to the rule of the party to enable him to write an appropriate appeal to the Appeal Panel.

Above notwithstanding, the aspirant submitted a petition to the 12-man appeal panel. He was appropriately rescreened by the panel, which cleared him to contest the primaries.

Contrary to what the aspirant was told in Bauchi by the screening committee, their report indicated that the aspirant as a responsible party member failed to pay his party dues. Therefrom the appeal panel requested the aspirant to show proofs he has been paying his dues as at when due. After sighting the original receipts as presented by the aspirant, the panel in its reports cleared the aspirant to contest in the forthcoming Adamawa PDP gubernatorial primaries.

Considering the above, one begins to wonder why the National Working Committee would want to disqualify an aspirant who was duly cleared by the Appeal Panel consisting of 6 of its members and 5 BOT members. Does it mean the NWC doesn’t have confidence in the 6 members of the NWC and the 5 BOT members on the panel or questioned the integrity of the panel’s chairman? Or is there any new information to warrant such intended unjust disqualification?

Now, rumors are that, the Deputy National Chairman (North): Umar Iliya Damagum and the National Treasurer: Ahmed Yayari Mohammed were said to have collected money and promised to exert their own influence on the NWC to disqualify Ambassador Jameel, simply for the incumbent Adamawa Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to participate in the primaries unopposed- that’s, to say, rubbishing the decision of the 12-man appeal panel; which all its members are respected members of the BOT and the National Working Committee.

If the party doesn’t want other aspirants to run against incumbent governors, why did it allow them to spend enormous money on the purchase of forms and other obligations?

What is Gov. Fintiri scared of as the incumbent governor who claimed to have structures, and resources and have worked for the development of Adamawa state? Could he now be sacred of somebody who he defeated in 2019 when he was not a governor? Or does he now know something which we don’t know? If I was Fintiri, I will not want to get ambassador Waziri disqualified and risk running an extraneous legal battle that could eventually end like that of Zamfara state in the 2019 elections. Pundits are sure the governor and the party are aware of the implication of section 84 (3) of the amended Electoral Act 2022.

The first article in the PDP electoral guidelines for the gubernatorial primary election says – “in Compliance with section 84(3) of the Electoral Act 202, the qualification and disqualification criteria shall only be as stated in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended). Article 4 said: The decision of the National Executive Committee of the party on all primary election matters shall be final and binding. And, article 5 section (f) of the same guidelines also stated that: “Only aspirants cleared by the Gubernatorial Screening Committee or whose appeal the Gubernatorial Screening Appeal Panel has upheld shall be qualified to participate in the primary election as contained in the final list of Cleared Aspirant.

An aspirant has fulfilled these requirements, while some people because of personal interests want to deny him or her that right, this will certainly lead to the PDP losing those states where such illegality occurred – this is the same thing that happened to the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Zamfara state in the 2019 election, in which the PDP became the major beneficiary. And, looking at the caliber of the people purported to be disqualified, one will definitely say the PDP will lose those states; if the disqualified aspirants go to the courts. People like Ambassador Jameel from Adamawa, an accomplished career diplomat with more than 34 years of public service, 27 of which were in the presidency of Nigeria. Directly served 5 presidents. the man from a royal family who is well educated and in the know of the intricacies of international politics & administration, exposed to international best practices in governance, who also came second in the 2019 Adamawa PDP gubernatorial primaries, cannot be barefacedly denied his rights, and expect him to keep mute without seeking redress in a competent court of law.

The PDP National Executive Council (NEC) and the National Working Committee ( NWC) should be very carefully- their reputation is at a stake, because any decision taken against the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, and the PDP Electoral Guidelines for Primary Election 2022 will only lead to the PDP easily losing states to the APC at the courts of Law, because any aspirant that is denied the right to participate in the primaries will absolutely go to the courts, and, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will certainly penalize any political party that contravenes court of law and the provision of the Electoral Act 2022. For example, INEC has just rejected the Imo state PDP 3-man Ward Ad hoc Delegate Congress conducted on April 30, 2022, following a ruling of an Abuja High Court.

In Summary, if the PDP allowed personal interest to override justice, fairness, and the entrenchment of internal democracy in it, the party will just be overweight battling with court cases, while its opponents will be in the field campaigning for votes. A stitch in time saves nine.
