Harvey Weinstein found guilty of sexual assault

Renowned US filmmaker, Harvey Weinstein, has been convicted of a first-degree criminal sex act and third-degree rape involving two different women.

The 67-year-old has been in a legal tussle with multiple women on sexual misconduct allegations, with Lupita Nyong’o, a Kenyan-Mexican actress, detailing her personal experience with Weinstein in 2017.

The many allegations had given rise to the #MeToo movement, which sees a huge number of women publicly accuse business moguls, government officials, and entertainers of sexual assault alike.

On Monday, Weinstein was found guilty in Manhattan state court of committing a criminal sex act in the first degree involving one woman and rape in the third degree involving another woman, but was acquitted on charges of predatory sexual assault involving the two women.

The jury of seven men and five women deliberated for nearly 27 hours over five days.

Following his conviction, Weinstein, who had been free on bond during the trial, was handcuffed while the judge ordered him to be sent to jail immediately, pending his March 11 sentencing by James Burke.

Although it’s uncertain how many years Weinstein will do in prison, an offender risks a minimum of five years and a maximum of 25 years jail term for a first-degree criminal sex act.

In the same vein, Weinstein faces no minimum jail term on the second charge for which he was convicted but risks a maximum of four years — aside from other sexual assault charges against him.

TheNewsGuru recalls that Weinstein was said to have agreed to pay the sum of $25 million in settlement to dozens of women who accused him of sexual misbehaviour.

The deal was, however, to await final approval from the courts and individuals involved, having applied to Weinstein’s numerous alleged victims in the US, Canada, Britain, and Ireland.

  • Sweden charges U.S. rapper A$AP Rocky with assault

U.S. rapper, A$AP Rocky, has been charged with assault in Sweden over his alleged involvement in a street brawl and is to remain in custody pending trial, the Swedish prosecutor’s office said on Thursday.
The 30-year-old performer, producer and model from Harlem, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, has been detained since July 3 along with two members of his entourage in connection with a fight in central Stockholm on June 30.
Mayers has been charged with assault, the prosecutor said in a statement. He faces a maximum of two years in prison if convicted.
“I have today commenced criminal proceedings against the three individuals suspected of assault causing actual bodily harm, having come to the conclusion that the events in question constitute a crime despite claims of self-defense and provocation,” Public Prosecutor Daniel Suneson said.
Suneson had initially wanted to charge Mayers with aggravated assault.
The rapper, best known for his song “Praise the Lord”, was in Stockholm to perform at the Smash hip-hop festival, but his detention has forced the cancellation of the rest of his European tour. His next performance is scheduled for August 11 in the U.S.
Mayer’s case has gained widespread attention including from U.S. President Donald Trump, who last week urged Swedish Prime Minister, Stefan Lofven, to free the rapper and said he was willing to vouch for Mayers’ bail.
Lofven, through a spokesman, has said he will not influence Mayers’ legal case.

  • Fresh trouble for Senator Elisha Abbo as journalist accuses him of assault

Embattled Adamawa-North lawmaker, Senator Elisha Abbo, has been drawn into a fresh scandal as a photojournalist, Olumuyiwa Owolabi, has accused him of assault and breach of agreement.
Owolabi in a chat with PUNCH noted that Abbo not only battered him but got the police to lock him up in Adamawa.
He said he first met Abbo in 2014 during the run-up to the June 2014 Ekiti State governorship election which Ayodele Fayose won.
Owolabi, who was the authorized photographer of Fayose during the election, said he met Abbo in Ekiti State and Abbo told him that he would like him to do some jobs for him.
He said, “The viral video of Senator Elisha Abbo assaulting a young lady isn’t a new to me as I was one of his victims of assault years back.
“I met him during the campaign of former Governor Ayodele Fayose while I was the official photojournalist assigned to Fayose during the electioneering campaign and later head of photojournalists to his deputy after the election.”
Owolabi said Abbo, who was contesting for senator on the platform of the All Progressives Congress at the time, signed a deal with him to cover his political activities at the cost of N2.8m.
He said on August 13, 2014, he travelled with Abbo to Yola, Adamawa State, from Abuja by air and they lodged at Lelewa hotel for weeks while campaigning for the primaries which was eventually won by Senator Binta Garba.
The photojournalist said he travelled along with the senator from Adamawa to Mubi, Vintim Muchala to Mubi and later back to Yola after he lost the senatorial primary.
Owolabi said, “On approaching Senator Abbo to enforce the contract agreement we had, he refused to pay. He ignored several pleas for him to just give me part of my money.
“On the fateful day we wanted to travel together to Mubi for the last campaign, Boko Haram invaded the place prior to the day we ought to have travelled. Due to the attack by Boko Haram, I began to plead with him that I needed to leave the state.

“After several text messages and calls put through to him were ignored, I had no choice but to sit in front of his room where he was lodged at Dansoho Hotel, Yola. This was around 5pm.”
The photojournalist claimed that when Abbo saw him, he got so angry that he began to beat him, hitting him repetitively.
Owolabi noted that Abbo quickly called a policeman and told the cop that he was a Boko Haram suspect and should be arrested immediately.
“As soon as he came out, I began to plead with him that I had to go. The next thing he said was that I was embarrassing him. He started beating and slapping me. He told his orderly to put me inside the pickup truck. He told them to point their guns at me and that he would kill me and tell people I was a member of Boko Haram.
“When I heard that statement, I was shocked because I didn’t know anybody there and I couldn’t speak their language fluently. No one could come to my rescue when he brutalised me, causing me to sprain my ankle.
“I began begging him to just leave me and let me go that I would leave the money for him because of his action.”
He alleged that Abbo’s police escort took him to Kaliwa Police Division around 2am with the instruction that he should be shot dead if he failed to comport himself.
Owolabi said Abbo had broken his phone at the time and so he was locked up in the police station without any means of contacting anyone.
The photojournalist added, “He had damaged my phone I couldn’t contact anybody; he tore my clothes and I was virtually naked.

    OLUMUYIWA OWOLABI

“That very night, on getting to Kaliwa police station, I begged the investigating police officer to please let me use his phone to talk to one of my relatives. That was how I called one of my brothers that pleaded with the IPO to assist me out of the situation.
“The DPO came the following morning and begged him (Abbo) to give me transport fare to go back to meet my family. Till date, he hasn’t paid me the money.”
The photojournalist, who urged Nigerians to help him, also shared photos of private chats he supposedly had with the senator.
