He said that all efforts are being made to ensure the victory of Atiku-Okowa, Hon Oborevwori, Sir Monday Onyeme and other candidates of the PDP.

He said; “We cannot have Okpe son as a Governor and at the same time produce a Senator. In our time, we are going to have an Okpe son as a Governor. Wike threatens to deal with Rivers PDP members if….

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has threatened to deal with the National and State Assembly candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state if they betray him and join those in Abuja, the Atiku Abubakar camp.

Wike made the threat when he spoke during the state Peoples Democratic Party campaign rally in Obio/Akpor Local Government of Rivers State, the last campaign rally of the PDP in the state.

He said, “All the other candidates, the Senatorial candidates, my Deputy Chairman, Doctor Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, Chief Allwell Onyeso, and Barinada Mpigi, and all the House of Reps candidates and the Assembly candidates, let me tell you people, if any of them like, let them go to Abuja and misbehave, we will teach them lesson as we are teaching these other people now.

“I want to sound it clear, all of them are listening to me, if they are not here, they are watching the television. If you follow this betrayal, we will place a course on you and you will suffer the way they are suffering, so if you have the mind to do that, be very very careful”.

Wike has been at loggerheads with some PDP chieftains in the state, following their resolve to support the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, after Wike lost to him at the party’s primaries last year.

PDP suspends Rivers rally for supporters’ safety

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its planned presidential campaign rally in Rivers for safety reasons.

Alhaji Yusuf Dingyadi, Media Advisory Committee member of the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), made the declaration in Sokoto on Tuesday.

He told newsmen that the PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, had not in any way expressed fears about comments by Rivers governor, Mr. Nysom Wike.

Dingyadi, also Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications to the PDP National Chairman, Dr Ayochia Ayu, said the party considered people’s safety as paramount show.

He said Gov. Wike’s comments and order of changes of rally venue needed to be carefully considered as the chief security officer of the state.

According to him, Atiku and other party bigwigs and stakeholders may be safe in the hands of armed security men in their motorcades, but party supporters may not be that safe.

He stressed that party supporters and loyalists who might come from different parts of Rivers and from neighbouring states might be subjected to the dangers of attacks by unknown persons or groups.

“We value our supporters’ lives and their safety than a campaign show. Therefore, the PCC agreed with the recommendation of the state’s local organising committee to postpone the rally.

“The rally has been shifted till when things are done rightly or till we can continue with the grassroots mobilisation through other efforts,’’ Dingyadi said.

Dingyadi stressed that Gov. Wike’s utterances and other political considerations on insecurity, lack of assurance of safety of lives and properties made the PCC to halt the visits.

He noted that presidential campaign rallies had been held successfully in Benue, Abia, Oyo, and others where the governors were considered as being at loggerheads with the PDP National Secretariat.

  • Forget politics, face reality – By Zogbobia Selomo

Forget politics, face reality – By Zogbobia Selomo

    By Zogbobia Selomo

Politics is dancing towards a climax. Even with all the auguries, our prayer is: may the season go well and come with peace for the whole nation. In the next few days, February 25, 2023, the nation will have another opportunity to make a choice of leadership that should lead its people out of the painful quagmire the present administration has plunged them into.

In a frantic scramble for votes, politicians are crisscrossing the nation as they saloon their ideas to a people facing trauma in all ramifications. Promises come very cheap at this time but the people are listening in order not to go into the errors of the past, to make choices that have nearly ruined their lives and even the nation.

The crowd is all about politics but my appeal here is for people to remove their eyes from politics and face reality, squarely. The reality tells the perfect story, the reality captures the rot, the wrath, and the pain in the land.

Reality is Naira Redesign and Naira Swap. The Central Bank governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, with the wisdom of Biblical Solomon, has considered it worthy to squeeze out of circulation dirty Naira notes worth over three trillion and replace them with brand new ones which mistreatment could attract sanctions. He has the backing of President Muhmmadu Buhari because this a cardinal policy of this administration.

The only painful thing is that so much old money have gone into the vaults of the banks but there is very little ones coming out. With about two trillion Naira taken out the Central Bank has printed just only N500bn, according to the CBN presentation at the National Assembly. The deficit is the chaos on the street and the overarching despondency across the country. There is anger in the land. People can’t access their funds. Married women are stripping naked in the banking halls, men are taking desperate measures, somebody has died after a long wait for cash or card. There is anger in the land. In fact, there is public outrage. While those who still have energy are demonstrating across the country in protest of a policy that has brought untold sorrow and hardship, some three states of the federation, who belong to the ruling party, APC, have gone to the Supreme Court, the highest court in the land, to seek relief for their people.

Apart from giving Nigerians the opportunity to spend brand new notes and feel a little bit of elation, the seamy side of the story which has been reinforced by the CBN governor, is that monies are being mopped out of circulation in order to deny the politicians the opportunity to buy votes with ill-acquired wealth. What goes round hardly comes round, dear friends. After stealing from the people, after a season of total fiasco and satanic misrule, the politicians will return to seduce the people with the same money they have stolen from them.

Whatever the plan is, the reality is that there are queues in the banks. And some of them are closing shops and their workers taking a bolt to safety. The sight of women climbing over the fence to achieve safety is not the most pleasant one. People are feeling very much on edge, and politics cannot help them.

The more exasperation is that the Naira squeeze has only come to worsen the pain of people staying on fuel queues and some even sleeping at the filling stations overnight. For months on end the nation cannot resolve the shameful nightmare of fuel scarcity until the President, who is also the Minister of Petroleum, has become the head of an ad hoc committee set up to tackle the problem. What a nation!

As I write, politics has nearly ambushed reality! A member of the ruling party, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has enjoyed the moniker of the Party Leader but is now also the presidential candidate of his party, has appropriated the financial fiasco and, in fact, the party misrule as a calculated attempt to hurt his chances of winning the presidential election.

“We will use our PVCs to take over government from them. If they like let them create fuel crisis, even if they say there is no fuel, we will trek to vote. They are full of mischief; they could say there is no fuel. They have been scheming to create fuel crisis, but forget about it. Relax, I Asiwaju, have told you that the issue of fuel supply will be permanently addressed.

“Let them increase the price of fuel, let them continue to hoard fuel, only them know where they have hoarded fuel, they hoarded money, they hoarded naira; we will go and vote and we will win. Even if they changed the ink on naira notes. Whatever their plans, it will come to naught. We are going to win. Those in the PDP will lose,” Tinubu said in Abeokuta.

The other day, he said at a campaign in Calabar, “Today, they moved the exchange rate from N200 to N800. If they had repaired it, if they had arrested this, we won’t be where we are today, we will be greater. They don’t know the way, they don’t know how to think, they don’t know how to do.”

How one man is able to appropriate the happenings in a country to massage his hubris and ambition beats the imagination of this writer. Everything is about Senator Tinubu, about his turn to rule as if the leadership is a favour that the country owes him. A party he has nurtured and curated, he is now speaking from outside, as a third party, unsuccessfully distancing himself from the fiasco he has imposed on the nation.

This would have qualified as drama of the absurd if the results were not too catastrophic. The tragedy that is unfolding is that the exploding crisis within the ruling party seems to be emblematic of the confusion with which his party has ruled the nation. Confusion, suspicion and incompetence. The Naira Redesign is the prolicy of this administration. The cost of the Naira to Dollar is also the monetary policy of the government, opening up multiple exchange rates for the Dollar. The fuel queues come directly from the failure of this government of which Tinubu is a lead player.

Is it smart of Tinubu to campaign with the failure of this government he has nurtured over the years? No. I submit it is fraudulent, cheap, desperate and very opportunistic.

In addition, I believe that his momentary populist stance is just a facade to mask his intemperate and noticeable deficiencies which, more often, just pop up during campaigns. Nowhere is this more noticeable than in the letter of sanction sent to TV Continental by the National Broadcasting Commission. From that document, the reality is that Tinubu has not just been campaigning with ideas and reason but just pouring out scurrilous effluvia to attract spontaneous sentiments.

This is breach two in the letter to TVC. On 24/01/23 at 03.39PM, during the APC Presidential Rally in Abia State. The APC Presidential Candidate BOLA AHMED TINUBU after telling the public to vote APC under the symbol of broom, he went on to make the following comment “…You know what you do with the rest of them? They are like lizards, cockroaches and mosquitoes. Just take the broom, wipe them off.”

This was nothing but pure hate speech and incitement to violence. The NBC took a decision without looking at faces.

This kind of behaviour from the politicians has managed to blanket the other reality which is very bizarre. While there is confusion in the political space, more killings are going on around the country, and the deaths don’t seem to matter anymore. Just a few that you already know. A local government chairman had his head removed in Imo State. Also in the same state, a judge was brought out of his court and shot on the streets. Plus other killings in other parts of the country, in one weekend in Katsina, the locals buried 71 people in different communities. But there is so much political drama across the land that gruesome deaths count less. How very unfortunate!

Nigeria is in a desperate state and needs tested hands to marshal the affairs of this nation. This is where Alhaji Abubakar Atiku stands shoulders high above other contestants in the ring. Moreover, he has focussed on issues and not used to frivolities. No matter the barbs thrown at him, including the very irritating ones from Governor Nyesom Wike and his band of governors, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities.

Although the failure of the head of this administration has denuded the stock of people from his part of the country, Atiku remains a light bearer and continues to demonstrate the coolness of leadership which is needed in very desperate times.
His line of submission is simple but desperately needed at this time. He will provide the leadership that will unite the country, tackle security taking tough decisions, restructure the nation and bring hope to the teeming youth who remain the engine room of growth, by refitting the economy to earn investors’ confidence.

Apart from shrapnels from his media aides, Atiku has largely remained on issues, with a maturity, readiness and coolness that the nation calls for at this time. The days ahead will demonstrate whether these observations are right and whether Nigerians are ready to bring him on board.

2023: PDP remains answer to Nigeria’s challenges – Tambuwal

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains the only answer to the Nigeria’s challenges.

Tambuwal, who made the declaration at the PDP’s campaign rally in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto on Saturday, said the party’s Presidential Candidate Atiku Abubakar, was fully set to face the battle.

“Atiku’s massage to the people of Goronyo centered on tackling security challenges, tapping the full potentials of Goronyo Dam and irrigation scheme, wealth creation through empowerment and employment opportunities,“ he said.

The governor, who was accompanied to the podium by his Deputy, Manir  Dan’iya, said that PDP would continue to sustain its issues-based campaign across the country.

“We have the strength and issues to tell Nigerians who we are and what we can do and we are sure the citizens will judge during the polls,“ he added.

Tambuwal appreciated the people of Sokoto State for their support and loyalty to the PDP and his administration, while calling on them to vote for all the party’s candidate, to get more dividends.

Earlier, Alhaji Shuaibu Gwanda-Gobir, the Senatorial Candidate for the Sokoto East District, thanked the people of the zone for their show of love and hospitality to the PDP campaign train.

Gwanda-Gobir, while reacting to the speculation that he was among the candidates planning to dump the PDP, stated that he had never discussed such with anybody.

“I am a senatorial candidate in PDP and a loyal member of the party, so nothing will induce me to join anybody in this context,“ he said.

Also speaking, the governorship candidate, Malam Sa’idu Umar, pledged to prioritise the development strategies of Tambuwal, if elected.

Umar said his administration would give more priority to security matters,  agriculture, education, youths and women empowerment.

  • Naira redesign: Don’t make Nigerians scapegoats, says Atiku

Naira redesign: Don’t make Nigerians scapegoats, says Atiku

The PDP standard bearer, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has told the Federal Government not to allow Nigerians to be made scapegoats “in the ongoing battle of titans over the redesign of the naira’’.

Atiku made the appeal in a statement by his media aides in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said that the Federal Government had a duty to swiftly see to it that commercial banks did not constitute themselves into stumbling blocks on “the well-thought out policy of naira redesign.

“It is commendable that the Federal Government has rather preferred to work behind the scenes, based on the intelligence it is believed to have received, regarding suspicions that some presidential candidates may have stashed billions of naira as war-chest for vote-buying.’’

The former vice-president lamented that there had been widespread anxiety across the country, arising from poor execution of the naira redesign policy by commercial banks in the country.

“Businesses and cash-dependent small holder enterprises are all currently in serious distress. This should be addressed urgently to save the economy from collapse.’’

Atiku said that he had on Jan. 28, made a crucial intervention on the redesign of the naira, calling on the Federal Government and the CBN to consider adjusting the deadline date, to address the challenges being faced by members of the public.

He re-stated that the policy was being mismanaged, unlike what obtained in other parts of the world, where similar policies were implemented.

According to him, millions of Nigerians are being driven into grave desperation and despondency on account of the shortcomings of the execution of the policy.

“In recent weeks, social tension has been growing across Nigeria on account of the poor management of the redesign of the naira policy,’’ the presidential hopeful added.

  • Naira Policy: Arewa youths attack PDP, Atiku for allegedly playing politics with Nigerians’ hardships

Naira Policy: Arewa youths attack PDP, Atiku for allegedly playing politics with Nigerians’ hardships

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) on Saturday urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stop playing politics with the new Naira policy and the challenges Nigerians faced in accessing the new notes.

Alhaji Yerima Shettima, the National President of the AYCF, in a statement on Saturday in Lagos, frowned at Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the PDP Presidential Candidate, over his comment on the new Naira policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The campaign office of Abubakar,  hay on Wednesday in a statement, advised the CBN not to extend the Feb. 10 deadline for the exchange of old naira notes with new ones.

The former vice-president had said any further extension would destroy the purpose and objective of the policy.

The deadline for the validity of old naira notes was initially Jan. 31, but the deadline sparked controversy as Nigerians could not access new notes, and on Sunday, the CBN announced extension of deadline to Feb. 10.

Meanwhile, Shettima said that it was wrong for the PDP to reportedly oppose the opinion of many Nigerians, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, National Assembly and others, in favour of further extension of the deadline on old notes by the CBN.

He said: “Former VP Atiku’s call was out of place because it is coming on the heels of growing complaint about the kind of sabotage that is causing untold hardship to Nigerians over this policy.

“Atiku stands alone in his call on the CBN not to review the deadline.

“He is against prominent Nigerians who made passionate appeal for deadline review, notably the sultan of Sokoto, the Senate and House of Representatives leaders and experts.

“What purpose will the current difficulties people are facing serve Atiku? Why would he rather identify with the need to let the difficulties faced by especially rural folks continue and for how long?”

Shettima said that the group was in support of extension of deadline for the cash swap policy due to difficulties citizens were currently experiencing.

“We are of course aware that the economy has suffered heavy avoidable bruises,” he said.

According to him, it will be suicidal for this nation to consider any advice against a review of the CBN cash swap deadline.

He said that for any policy to succeed, it must have a human face, “and we believe the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, won’t turn against overwhelming public interest”.

The AYCF boss advised PDP not to turn the policy “into a weapon of political manipulation or political attention-seeking opportunity.

“We advise the ex-VP to concentrate on his presidential campaigns by showcasing what he has done to merit the votes of Nigerians and stop playing politics with our economic policies and associated challenges.

“We thought the ex-VP would tell Nigerians what he has to offer in fighting inflation and weak national currency,” he added.

Recalled that Abubakar had earlier urged the apex bank to immediately review the measures in place for ensuring the seamless circulation of the redesigned naira notes across the country.

He said that this had become necessary to alleviate the hardship confronting ordinary people, especially rural dwellers, who need cash for their daily transactions.

I’ll ensure Nigeria is restructured in 6 months – Atiku

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar says he will ensure Nigeria is restructured within six months of his administration if elected.

He said this at the PDP Presidential Diaspora Campaign Grand Finale held in Abuja.

Atiku, who was represented by former National chairman of the PDP, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, said that sufficient research work needed to achieve restructuring in Nigeria had been concluded.

Nwodo is the Deputy Director, Research and Strategy, of the PDP residential Campaign Council ( PCC).

He said that Nigeria worked better when every region controlled its natural resources.

The former Vice president recalled that existing socio-economic developments were put in place when regions controlled their resources.

“When we are talking about restructuring by Executive Order, in the first six months, this country will not be what you are seeing today.

“This has been worked out and I’m just waiting to be sworn in on May 29 and the plans will be rolled out.”

He said that Nigeria was a great country, adding that all that it required was good leadership.

“We will provide that kind of leadership,” he declared.

Atiku further said that if elected, he would rescue Nigeria from all indices that had portrayed it in bad light.

He listed his five-point agenda to include education and security, saying that he would restore security to the country by nipping in the bud factors responsible for rising violence.

Earlier, Director, Directorate of Diaspora Groups, PDP PCC, Prof. Isa Odidi, had said that Nigerians in Diaspora believe that Atiku would articulate and implement the Diaspora Policy Framework to help capture, harness and channel their expertise to the country.

“Atiku’s government will do more to remove obstacles and create opportunities for Nigerians in the Diaspora to engage in economic development of Nigeria.

“We all unequivocally support Atiku/Okowa for President and Vice President of Nigeria,” he asserted.

This election will not be based on cabals assurance – Wike warns Atiku

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has warned the PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar not to rely on the cabal in the presidency to win the 2023 presidential election.

Wike alleged that the cabals are backing Atiku to win the upcoming presidential election.

Wike spoke at the Comprehensive Secondary School field, Ibaka Town, Okrika Island during the Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party Campaign Flag-off Rally for Okrika Local Government Area on Friday.

“I said they have been given assurance, but this election is not going to be based on that cabal assurance. It is on the people’s assurance,” he said.

Wike has, however, insisted that they would still need Rivers State to win or they would lose the election.

According to him, “whether you like it or not, you must need Rivers State. If you don’t need Rivers State you must fail. If you say you don’t want us, you’ll fail. There is no two ways about it.”

  • 2023: NNPP reacts to Kwankwaso, Atiku meeting in private

2023: NNPP reacts to Kwankwaso, Atiku meeting in private

New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) says its Presidential Candidate, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, has neither met nor discussed with his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opponent, Atiku Abubakar, or his representatives in private on working relationship on the 2023 presidential election.

The spokesperson, Kwankwaso/NNPP Presidential Campaign Council, Ladipo Johnson, disclosed this in a statement he issued on Wednesday in Abuja.

Johnson said that it was apparent that Kwankwaso was finishing the race stronger than other presidential candidates, especially Abubakar of the PDP.

He said this was clear as Abubakar seemed to be “gasping for air as his platform crumbles and is seeking a solid branch to hold on!”

Johnson said his response was important due to the statement by Abubakar that he was “in touch with Kwankwaso”.

He said the response was also key because of the false statements on social media that three million members of the Kwankwasiyya movement in the North East had moved to the PDP.

The spokesperson described it as orchestrated moves by Atiku’s campaign to pass a false and mischievous narrative to Nigerians that Kwankwaso was joining his team.

“The fact of the matter is that neither Atiku and Kwankwaso nor their representatives have met in private or at all to discuss any working relationship.

“They have only met during town hall meetings in the last few months!

“Nigerians will recall that earlier in the campaign the false narrative being pushed was that Kwankwaso was only strong in Kano!

“ He suddenly has three million members leaving him in the North East?”

Johnson reiterated that Kwankwaso was not stepping down for, nor working with any of the candidates or Atiku Abubakar.

“We are in this race to win and uplift the standard of living of all Nigerians.

“Opponents who have seen the ground game and the grassroots campaign of Kwankwaso now understand, 24 days to the polls, that the voters at the grassroots, the average man and woman, have decided to vote for Kwankwaso and the NNPP as their party of choice.”
