Atiku’s latest claims baseless, distracting – Presidency

The presidency says its attention has been drawn to unfounded allegations by former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, claiming to be the subject of an EFCC investigation regarding unsubstantiated financial dealings involving Lagos State.

“These claims, circulated through his media office, are false and reflect a troubling pattern of relying on social media gossip over substance,” Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President, Information and Strategy, said in a statement on Friday.

“It is disheartening that a politician of Atiku’s stature would lend credibility to baseless social media speculation to remain politically relevant,” Onanuga added.

He said President Bola Tinubu remained focused on addressing critical national challenges and advancing his administration’s agenda for Nigeria’s growth and stability.

The presidential aide said the president had neither the time nor the inclination to engage in petty political distractions.

“Atiku’s allegations are infantile and a transparent ploy to deflect from his political setbacks.

“His repeated attempts to drag the presidency and now the Lagos State government into fabricated controversies reveal a desperate bid for attention amid his fading attempt to cobble a coalition,”Onanuga said.

He stated that since his defeat in the 2023 presidential election, the former vice president had failed to rise to the dignified role of an elder statesman.

Onanuga said rather than contributing constructively to the national discourse, he had chosen the path of divisive rhetoric and unfounded accusations.

“We urge Atiku Abubakar to redirect his energy toward initiatives that foster unity, economic progress, and democratic stability – qualities Nigeria urgently needs.

“Lastly, the former vice president should know that the EFCC, as an independent institution, operates within its statutory mandate without external influence.

”Any insinuation otherwise is a disservice to the agency’s professionalism and the rule of law.

“The presidency remains committed to transparency, accountability and the pursuit of national development – priorities that demand our undivided attention,” he said.

  • Stop your derogatory comments against Akpabio, Danjuma Isaiah tells Atiku

Stop your derogatory comments against Akpabio, Danjuma Isaiah tells Atiku

A critical stakeholder in the North East geopolitical zone, Danjuma Isaiah, has cautioned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to stop making derogatory comments about the Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

This was contained in an open letter made available to newsmen in Abuja late on Thursday, Mr. Isaiah stated that ‘It is hardly possible to build anything out of frustration and bitterness’, saying that’s the predicament of Atiku who has unsuccessfully contested for President for six times.

The letter titled, “The Case of Going to Equity Without Clean Hands” reads, “My attention as a Public Affairs Commentator and Citizen of Wukari in Taraba State has been invited to various invectives of unprecedented dimension directed at His Excellency, Senator Godswill Akpabio, by my brother, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar ostensibly to give oxygen to resurrect his endless political odyssey and sordid presidential ambition.

“I am weighing into this public narrative to interrogate various disruptions triggered by some notable politicians like Atiku Abubakar in our national life.

It is hardly possible to build anything out of frustration and bitterness. This is sadly the predicament of a one-time Vice President, Atiku Abubakar who is on course to being enlisted in the Guinness Book of Records, as the only person globally, who has unsuccessfully contested for President for six times spanning 33 years.

“These bitterness and frustration have beclouded his reasoning. Atiku Abubakar, who is shamefully a dominant mention in every page of the corruption history in Nigeria, an insipid and serial sodomist, could have rather used the Ramadan period to seek for the atonement of his many mortal and monumental sins from the Almighty Allah, but his engagement in chicanery and unbridled umbrage in the most malicious and defamatory manner is the sad characterization of a man reputed for low family values and child abuse.

“The series of pernicious lies peddled by Atiku deserve response in this era of positive and innovative Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which has invited collective actions for the growth and prosperity of Nigeria.

“Atiku Abubakar’s corrupt practices have made Nigerians to reject him for a record six times.

It is an established fact that Atiku Abubakar is one of the most corrupt Nigerian, having been associated with every high-profile corruption allegation in the country across the private and public sectors.

“For those who don’t know, Atiku was the subject of a probe about 15 years ago by the United States Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs chaired by Senator Carl Levin. He was indicted for using offshore companies to siphon about 40 million dollars from Nigeria between 2000 and 2008 to his fourth wife in the United States, Jennifer Iwenjiora Douglas Abubakar (now divorced).

“Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, whom Atiku served for 8 years as Vice President, in his book ’MY WATCH’, in the chapter, titled “Atiku and US Justice Entanglement”, gave a vivid account of “corrupt involvement” of Atiku with a company called iGATE and William Jefferson.

Obasanjo equally linked Atiku to the embezzlement of $20 million, funds that were to be utilized by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), and another $125 million to fund PTDF during 2003 fiscal year.

“The immediate past governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has also spoken eloquently about Atiku’s corrupt adventure. In his book, ’The Accidental Public Servant’, El-Rufai gave a detailed account of Atiku’s corrupt involvement in Ericsson’s deals, the PTDF scandal, Abuja Water Treatment Plant contract and his obsession with marabouts – these marabouts that have been deceiving him since 1991 that he will be president.

“A serial women abuser, Atiku has divorced two of his wives since 1971 (Ladi and Jennifer). In the case of Jennifer, even after the divorce, he threatened and bullied her out of Nigeria. Jennifer had to sell her law chambers in Nigeria and relocated to the UK. He has been after the woman in an attempt to dispossess her of her assets and properties.

“In the contrary, unlike Atiku Abubakar, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has for over two decades, conducted himself with integrity and transparency. His accomplishments in Akwa Ibom State, in particular, and Nigeria in general, are symbolized in the countless legacies of infrastructure, human capacity development and tourists’ hub.
Just yesterday (Tuesday), the Super Eagles of Nigeria hosted The Warriors of Zimbabwe in a World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

“The stadium, which is the only FIFA approved facility in Nigeria, was built by Akpabio as governor of the state. What did Atiku do for Adamawa state and Nigeria?

“The Zimbabwean delegation also flew Ibom Air and landed at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo- all legacies of the Uncommon Transformer. But where are Atiku’s legacies for the people? He can only lay claim to a chain of businesses, which are products of pillaging and corrupt investments.

“In all of these, it is crystal clear that Akpabio’s unflinching support for President Tinubu, who blocked Atiku’s emergence as the presidential candidate of the APC in 2015 and frustrated his return bid in 2019 and yet floored him in the 2023 general elections is the reason for Atiku’s hostile charge against the Senate President. But using Akpabio as a ladder to get to the president cannot do Atiku any good. Both Tinubu and Akpabio are united by the resolve to rejig and reset the nation and give Nigerians dividends of democracy, which Atiku as vice president worked tirelessly to undermine for personal aggrandizement.

“It is also axiomatic that Atiku has started preparation for the 2027 general elections. As for Akpabio and Tinubu, they are preoccupied with state and governance issues and would not swim with the former vice president in his quest to distract the duo from delivering good governance to Nigerians.

“When 2027 comes, Nigerians will, for the umpteenth time give, Atiku a black eye and vote the best candidate”.

  • I didn’t collect money from Sanwo-Olu for 2023 election campaign – Atiku

    I didn’t collect money from Sanwo-Olu for 2023 election campaign – Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar says he never collected any money from Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos for his 2023 election campaign.

This is contained in a statement issued by Atiku Media Office in Abuja on Thursday.

The Media Aide to Atiku, Paul Ibe, who issued the statement, denied the reports making the rounds that Sanwo-Olu gave money to the former vice-president for his 2023 presidential election campaign.

Atiku was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.

Ibe, in the statement, described the insinuations as a lie and kindergarten propaganda.

He said that the report had claimed that Sanwo-Olu had made available to Abubakar money purportedly belonging to Lagos.

The media aide stated that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was also credited with investigating the matter.

Ibe described the report as ‘a blatant lie from the pit of hell; a contrived political hogwash and a futile campaign of calumny aimed at advancing a political interest against Abubakar’.

He said that Abubakar did not know Sanwo-Olu and had never met him before.

“How is it possible for an Atiku that did not know and had no connection with Sanwo-Olu to be having a transaction with him involving the exchange of money – let alone during the presidential election of 2023 in which his boss was a contestant? To what end would that be?, he queried.

Ibe advised EFCC to make public the outcome of its alleged investigation, since it had been dragged into it.

He called for immediate halt to what he described as a voyage of misadventure and campaign of calumny against the person and reputation of Abubakar.

  • Rivers Emergency Proclamation: Atiku’s coalition misses the point – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Rivers Emergency Proclamation: Atiku’s coalition misses the point – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Whether they expected it or not, members of an amorphous coalition of opposition politicians, with the declared aim of removing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu from power in the 2027 General Election, met the first disappointment in their chosen path on Thursday, March 30, 2025.

Led by former Vice President and twice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the group had called on the National Assembly (NASS) to vote against Tinubu’s Proclamation of a State of Emergency in Rivers State, and suspension of elected officials therefrom.

Besides, the coalition urged the Judiciary to swiftly strike down the Tinubu pronouncement, as “it sets a dangerous precedent that could be used to arbitrarily remove any governor in the future,” and urged all Nigerians, civil society organisations and political groups to reject the move.

At the coalition’s press conference in Abuja, Atiku, flanked by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai; the spokesperson of the Labour Party (LP), Yunusa Tanko; and an ex-Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, described Tinubu’s actions as “illegal and a violation of the amended 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.”

Accusing Tinubu of failing to “follow due process,” and misusing Section 305 of the Constitution “to declare a state of emergency,” Atiku said: “Section 305 of the Constitution allows the President to declare a State of Emergency only in extreme cases, where public safety, national security, or Nigeria’s sovereignty is at serious risk. However, it does not grant him the power to suspend elected officials or to demolish democratic structures, as he has brazenly done.

“This action is not only unlawful, but also a clear subversion of democracy and imposition of autocratic federal control over a duly-elected state government. We strongly condemn this development and call on all Nigerians of good conscience to resist this brazen assault on the Constitution of our country and the institutions of our democracy.

“Even if an emergency declaration were valid (which it is not), it would still require a two-thirds majority approval of all members of the National Assembly – that is, at least, 72 Senators and 240 Members of the House of Representatives. If this approval is not secured, the proclamation must automatically cease to have effect.”

But the coalition got a shocker from both chambers of the National Assembly on March 20, which gave an overwhelming approval to the emergency rule in Rivers State.

As the Senate confirmed its decision via a voice vote with no figures disclosed; and the House of Representatives, which also had a voice vote, revealed that 243 of its 360 Members signed the register, the Atiku coalition missed the point: That the Constitution “does not give the President the power to suspend a Governor and Members of a State House of Assembly.”

In interpreting the Constitution and Laws derievable from the GRUNDNORM, what’s not expressly provided is subject to discretional authority, which President Tinubu exercised in the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and Members of the Rivers Assembly for six months.

Let’s bring the argument home. Why did the Supreme Court give judgment to Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who was in self-exile in Ghana, and didn’t campaign nor win the Rivers governorship poll in 2007? It’s to cure then-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s interference in the PDP primary results with extraordinary measures, such as President Tinubu deployed to halt the danger facing Rivers, Niger Delta and the entire country.

In the unprecedented judgment, the Supreme Court said that votes are cast for the Party and not its candidate, who directly benefits from the electoral commission declaration in the end. Hence, the apex court ruled that Amaechi, having won the PDP primary, the votes won by Celestine Omehia at the poll belonged to him.

Also in 2010, the National Assembly introduced the “DOCTRINE OF NECESSITY,” which’s not provided for in the Constitution, to upgrade then-Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to the post of President, as then-ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua, who died in 2010, didn’t hand over power to Jonathan, as Acting President, before his medical trip abroad.

Had Fubara secured two-thirds majority of members of the Rivers Assembly – in line with the provisions in subsections (4), (5) and (6) of Section 305 of the Constitution – and called on the President to proclam a State of Emergency on Rivers State due to threats by militants to blow up oil pipelines if Fubara was impeached; the governor could’ve saved his position, that of the Deputy Governor, and Members of the Rivers Assembly.

Section 305, subsections (4), (5) and (6) of the 1999 Constitution, states as follows:

“(4) The Governor of a State may, with the sanction of a resolution supported by two-thirds majority of the House of Assembly, request the President to issue a Proclamation of a state of emergency in the State when there is in existence within the State any of the situations specified in subsection (3) (c), (d) and (e) of this section and such situation does not extend beyond the boundaries of the State.

“(5) The President shall not issue a Proclamation of a state of emergency in any case to which the provisions of subsection (4) of this section apply unless the Governor of the State fails within a reasonable time to make a request to the President to issue such Proclamation.

    “(6) A Proclamation issued by the President under this section shall cease to have effect – (a) if it is revoked by the President by instrument published in the Official Gazette of the Government of the Federation;

    (b) if it affects the Federation or any part thereof and within two days when the National Assembly is in session, or within ten days when the National Assembly is not in session, after its publication, there is no resolution supported by two-thirds majority of all the members of each House of the National Assembly approving the Proclamation;

    (c) after a period of six months has elapsed since it has been in force: Provided that the National Assembly may, before the expiration of the period of six months aforesaid, extend the period for the Proclamation of the state of emergency to remain in force from time to time for a further period of six months by resolution passed in like manner; or

    (d) at any time after the approval referred to in paragraph (b) or the extension referred to in paragraph (c) of this subsection, when each House of the National Assembly revokes the Proclamation by a simple majority of all the members of each House.”

Governor Fubara didn’t heed the provisions of Section 305(4) and (5) of the Constitution when the militants began to blow up oil pipelines. Instead, Fubara, facing an impeachment threat, became the Instigator-in-Chief and enabler of the militants’ destruction of oil pipelines in Rivers State, which could’ve spread to other States in the Niger Delta had President Tinubu not stepped in with the emergency rule in Rivers.

Fubara reportedly told the agitating militants, “Boys, I’ll soon give you signal when you will start action, just be on standby, I’m not scared of anybody.” This is from a governor – who’s the Chief Security Officer of Rivers – wanting to destroy the state that he governs!

And it seems Fubara did give that “signal” when the Rivers Assembly served him with an Impeachment Notice. The militants started by blowing up pipelines that carry crude oil for export, causing huge infernos that add to the devastation and pollution of the Niger Delta.

In the circumstances, what did the opposition coalition want President Tinubu to do? Fold his arms, and hail Fubara and the militants for a job well done? That would’ve been a novel failure, and ABDICATION OF RESPONSIBILITY, as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Proclaiming the State of Emergency in Rivers, Tinubu referenced a recent Supreme Court judgment that declared as “non-existent” governance in Rivers; and the militants’ bombing of oil pipelines.

President Tinubu said: “On February 28, 2025, the supreme court, in a judgment in respect of about eight consolidated appeals concerning the political crisis in Rivers State, based on several grave unconstitutional acts and disregard of rule of law that have been committed by the Governor of Rivers State, as shown by the evidence before it, pronounced in very clear terms:

“A government cannot be said to exist without one of the three arms that make up the government of a state under the 1999 Constitution, as amended. In this case, the head of the executive arm of the government has chosen to collapse the legislature, to enable him to govern without the legislature as a despot. As it is, there is no government in Rivers State.”

“With all these and many more, no good and responsible President will standby and allow the grave situation (in Rivers) to continue without taking remedial steps prescribed by the Constitution to address the situation in the state, which, no doubt, requires extraordinary measures to restore good governance, peace, order and security.

“In the circumstance, having soberly reflected on and evaluated the political situation in Rivers State, and the Governor and Deputy Governor of Rivers State having failed to make a request to me, as President, to issue this proclamation as required by section 305(5) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, it has become inevitably compelling for me to invoke the provision of section 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State with effect from today, 18th March, 2025 and I so do.

“By this declaration, the Governor of Rivers State, Mr Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State are hereby suspended for an initial period of six months.”

Members of the opposition coalition, who’ve railed against President Tinubu’s actions in Rivers State, should put Nigeria’s survival above their narrow, self-interests of scoring political points ahead of the 2027 General Election that’s already heating up the polity.

Nigerians genuinely need peace in Rivers State, and the entire country, with the Tinubu proclamation of emergency rule having the potential to arrest the lingering political crisis since 2023.

2027 realignment: Atiku, Fayemi, El-Rufai form coalition against Tinubu ahead elections

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alongside prominent members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), launched a new coalition against President Bola Tinubu as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

At a press conference currently ongoing several opposition leaders have shown support, including Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi (represented by Yunusa Tanko), former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties Peter Ahmeh, and Segun Showunmi, Convenor of the Alternative, among others.

Some notable figures who could not attend, including former Governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) and Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), as well as former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Adamu, sent their apologies.

2027 realignment: El-Rufai goes spiritual , says “I pray, Obi, Atiku, others join SDP”

Ex-Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has gone spiritual as he prays that key opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-governors Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola, to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

El-Rufai, who recently dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the SDP, cited dissatisfaction with the ruling party’s leadership as his reason for defection. His move has sparked speculation about a potential opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

In an interview with BBC Hausa, El-Rufai emphasised the need for opposition leaders to unite under one platform.

What I want and pray for is for all opposition leaders—Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola—to join the SDP,” he said.

He also expressed disappointment with the current administration, stating that his initial support for Bola Tinubu was based on the expectation that he would replicate his achievements in Lagos at the national level.

El-Rufai stated, “What pains me is that the government we supported and had confidence in would do well, because we saw what Tinubu did in Lagos despite his challenges. We all know about his issues in Chicago, but we thought if he could replicate his work in Lagos for Nigeria, let’s support him. However, he failed.”

Addressing claims that he had betrayed Atiku, El-Rufai clarified that their relationship was professional rather than political.

“I never betrayed Atiku Abubakar because we didn’t meet in politics; we met at work. In work, if I see that he didn’t do well, whoever he is, I will tell him. I told Buhari, and I even took Buhari to court on the new naira issue. When Obasanjo and Atiku were having issues, those of us working with Obasanjo looked at the issues between them and said Obasanjo was more right. It was not about north and south; Obasanjo was right. Atiku and I are now together, and if I betrayed him, why are we together now?” he added.

Atiku demands investigation into take over of Lagos Assembly

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called for a thorough investigation into a viral video showing armed security personnel at the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Abubakar, in a statement on Monday in Abuja, described the action of the security agencies as an assault on the country’s democracy.

He said that it was bewildering that the security operatives reportedly had a mandate to enforce a leadership change in the assembly.

The former vice-president said that the action on the state’s foremost legislative body was capable of putting the country’s hard-earned democracy in jeopardy.

“This act is an attack on the sanctity of democracy and a landmark of indignity to the Nigerian electorate, especially the people of Lagos.

“Whatever may have caused the leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly is an undercurrent that is not abnormal in a system of democracy.

“The purported invitation of armed security operatives for a conflict resolution in a parliament is an anathema that should be frowned upon and interrogated with all sense of urgency,” he said.

Abubakar urged President Bola Tinubu to focus on addressing the present challenges in the country.

Ahead 2027 election, ex–Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Monday led a delegation to meet with his former principal, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo at the hilltop residence of the former Nigerian leader in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The former vice president was accompanied by former Governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke and Senator Aminu Tambuwal who is a former governor of Sokoto State and Ex-Speaker of HoR.

The agenda of the meeting was not immediately known as of press time but it comes amid plans by opposition politicians to map out strategies to trounce the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and win the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku deputised Obasanjo from May 1999 to May 2007. Atiku, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023, came second after President Bola Tinubu of the APC who won the poll.

2027 realignment: Kwankwaso denies pact with Atiku, Obi

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the National leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, has denied having an agreement with the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and his counterpart from Labour Party Peter Obi.

Kwankwaso said claims of him ruling Nigeria for four years, Atiku ruling for four years, while Obi for eight years was false.

Speaking in an interview with BBC, the former Kano State governor said he was unaware of such a plan.

He, however, admitted to have heard that members of Atiku’s camp are consulting and having meetings with regional leaders and clerics to push such narrative.

According to Kwankwaso: “I did not appreciate this at all.

“They were told that I had agreed to a deal where Atiku would serve for four years, I would serve for another four years, and Peter Obi would serve for eight years.

“This is completely false; such an agreement never existed.

“Such lies and deceit are precisely why we left. Myself, Peter Obi, Wike, and others all left.

“Now they are coming back, asking us to help those who humiliated us to achieve their goals.”
