What will make Peter Obi consider a merger – LP Campaign Spokesman, Tanko

After few weeks of speculation that there could be a merger between Peter Obi of the Labour Party  (LP)and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the spokesman for the Obi-Datti campaign council in the 2023 election Yunusa Tanko has revealed what could make his principal agree to a merger.

According to Tanko, Obi would only be interested in a merger that will make the country better.

“His Excellency, Peter Gregory is not interested in a merger that is only for the interest of seeking power. He is interested in a merger that will bring Nigerians out of the poverty level, bringing the Nigerian people to a comfortable state of health care,” he Tanko said.

“Making sure Nigerians have potable drinking water; making sure the problem of power supply is being solved.

“So, therefore, he is interested strongly in a merger that is driven by ideology and a programme. But if it’s only for the purpose of power, he is not interested.”

The Obi/ Atiku merger started to emanated after the duo met few weeks ago in the latter’s residence.

Soldiers’ deployment in Kano illegal, Atiku tells FG

Former Vice-president Atiku Abubakar has described the deployment of soldiers in Kano State in the tussle over the throne of the ancient city as an upset to the peace and security of the state.

Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, also described the soldiers’ deployment by the federal government as a breach of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

He added that Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf adhered to the law and constitution to repeal the Emirates Council Law which annulled the five Emirates created by his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje, in 2019.

Speaking via a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, on Saturday, May 25, 2024, Atiku said: “The situations happened within the confines of the law and in compliance with the powers conferred on the Governor as provided by Section 5(2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended; and also in consultation with the Kingmakers of Kano, reappointed Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano State and accordingly handed him a letter of appointment.

“It is surprising that in the early hours of today, exactly at about 5:30 a.m. the former Emir of Kano, His Majesty Aminu Ado Bayero backed by Federal might made their way into the Nasarawa Palace of the Kano Emirate while the reappointed Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II was at the Gidan Dabo, which is the main residence of the Emir of Kano.

“In this wise, the former Emir could not have made his way into the Nasarawa Palace without the support of the Federal Government having done so with the support of the Army and other security personnel in his company.

“The deployment of soldiers in extra-constitutional matters such as this undermines the integrity of the Nigerian military.

“We need to remind the Tinubu administration that Kano State is known for peace and harmony spanning thousands of years and any attempt to destablise the peace of the Land of Commerce shall be resisted. Recall that Muhammadu Sanusi II was dethroned on 9th March 2020 dethroned, Kano forged on in peace without any fracas.

We need to remind the Tinubu administration that Kano State is known for peace and harmony spanning thousands of years and any attempt to destablise the peace of the Land of Commerce shall be resisted. Recall that Muhammadu Sanusi II was dethroned on 9th March 2020 dethroned, Kano forged on in peace without any fracas.

“We wish to state unequivocally that if for any reason, law and order breaks down in Kano State, particularly Kano Municipal, the Federal Government should be held responsible as the act of providing security cover to the former Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero to come back to Kano is an invitation to anarchy.

“The Federal Government does not have the jurisdiction to interfere in the internal affairs of any State in Nigeria in the spirit of true federalism as enshrined in Section 2(1) and (3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and the dichotomy provided by the Exclusive and Residual List therein respectively.”

The Kano State Government had, on Thursday, repealed the Emirates Council Law which annulled the five Emirates created by Ganduje in 2019.

The state government, thereafter, merged the five Emirates into one and reinstated Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano.

Sanusi was removed in March 2020 by Ganduje who cited insubordination for his action.

Presidency: I will keep contesting as long as I’m alive – Atiku

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2023 general election, Atiku Abubakar, has stated that he will keep contesting as long as he’s alive and healthy.

Atiku disclosed this during an interview on the Hausa service of the Voice of America in Abuja.

Asked if he will contest again, Atiku said: “Of course, I will keep contesting again and again as long as I am alive and healthy.

“Even the former US President Abraham Lincoln contested seven times before finally winning.

“However, given the current state of the PDP, it is clear that a single-handed effort will not suffice to win the election. Strong support and collaboration with other parties are required.”

The former Vice President will be 81 by the time the next presidential election comes around in 2027.

Atiku has run for the presidency six times but has been on the ballot as a presidential candidate on three occasions — 2007, 2019, and 2023.

Abubakar said he is consoled by the fact that former United States President Abraham Lincoln did not win the presidential vote on the first time of asking.

  • PDP Chieftain, Bode George gives tips on how to reconcile Atiku, Wike

PDP Chieftain, Bode George gives tips on how to reconcile Atiku, Wike

A former National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) Southwest, Chief Bode George has given tips on how to resolve the rift between the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) Nyesom Wike.

According to Chief George, something must have triggered the face-off between Wike and Atiku.

George made his position known while speaking on Arise Television, noting that Wike is not working against the party.

George noted that Wike is a bonafide member of the party.

Asked if Wike is working against PDP, he said: “That’s exactly what I’m driving at. Wike and Atiku just didn’t get out in different directions, something happened. And the party leaders must come down, do an in-depth post-mortem analysis of what happened.”

Justifying Wike’s appointment in the APC-led government, George said, “Once party A wins an election, it opens the door to say, ‘Let’s have a united group.

“When Obasanjo won the election in 1999, he invited people from ANPP, APGA, AD,” citing example with the late Chief Bola Ige who served as the Attorney-General of the Federation while he was a member of the Alliance for Democracy.

“We can’t just have a Berlin wall to say that once you’re a member of this, you can’t serve there. The fact that you’re serving there doesn’t mean you’ve left your party.

“According to Wike, he wrote a letter to serve in the APC government. He still plays the music. How can he work against the PDP? I don’t believe it,” George said, adding that “there are issues to be sorted out”.

“I just came back from Ibadan where we had an elders’ meeting in respect to discordant voices that are coming out from Ondo State. People should get back to their various Local Governments and contribute their quota.

“It’s unfair for committed members of the party to make such assertions in public. Discipline is part of the management in any organisation. What Pearse said isn’t correct,” he added.

Group faults Atiku on Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

Concerned Nigerian Network in Diaspora (CNND), a Pressure Group, has faulted former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s critism of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Project, describing it as baseless.

Mr James Erebuoye, the President, CNND, stated this in an interview NAN on Wednesday in Abuja.

Abubakar had alleged that the project was embarked upon because of business ties between President Bola Tinubu and Gilbert Chagoury, the owner of the Hitech Construction Company.

But Erebuoye, said that there was no iota of truth in the claim.

He said that Nigerians should focus on the capabilities, integrity and service delivery of the company, rather than some mundane issues.

Erebuoyo, also the President, Rebuild Nigeria Movement Worldwide, advised Nigerians to consider the company’s credibility and service delivery capabilities regardless of its ownership.

  • “Damagum’s survival is not defeat for Atiku or victory for Wike, it’s for PDP members” – Senator Abba Moro

“Damagum’s survival is not defeat for Atiku or victory for Wike, it’s for PDP members” – Senator Abba Moro

The Senator representing Benue South Senatorial District and Senate Minority Leader, Comrade Abba Patrick Moro PhD on Saturday stated that the survival of Amb. Umar Lliya Damagum as Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was not a victory or defeat for anybody but a decision that was unanimously agreed on by the relevant stakeholders for the party to forge ahead.

Senator Moro’s reaction was against the backdrop of rumor in some quarters that Amb. Damagum’s survival, against call for his resignation, was victory for the former governor of River State and Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and a defeat for PDP presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Alh. Atiku Abubakar.

Senator Moro said the activities and inactivities of PDP should not be translated to Atiku and Wike. He said the whole issue was not about victory or defeat for anybody but about PDP; about providing an alternative formidable platform for Nigerians to look up to.

“We cannot translate the entirety of PDP’s activities and inactivities to Wike and Atiku, out of millions of other members of the party across the country who also have their own thinking and reasons for being in the party. The whole issue was not about Wike or Atiku, or victory for Wike or defeat for Atiku, the issue was existential. We came together and reasoned together, that in the present scenario where Nigerians are hurting due to the maladministration of the APC government, what do we do to provide an alternative platform for Nigerians to look up to? In that circumstances, we decided to thread with caution so that we dont throw away the baby with the bath water,” he said.

On why the National Caucus of the party allowed Nyesom Wike into their meeting, Senator Moro said the Minister couldn’t have been stopped from the meeting since he has not been found guilty of any crime and penalized by the party. He said if the party’s disciplinary committee, headed by Senator Bukola Saraki found Wike guilty of the alleged antiparty activities and have him sanctioned, he will stop attending the party’s meetings.

“The constitution of our party is very clear on who is a member and who is not a member of the caucus of the party and I dare say, at this point, that as a former governor who is still a member of the party, Nyesom Wike is a member of the National Caucus of the party.

“If actions had been taken immediately after the elections and people who are perceived to have acted contrary to the desires and yearnings of the PDP have been sanctioned, then we can say that having been expelled or suspended, you can’t be here, but as it is, non of such actions has been taken, so you can’t just ban people from attending meetings.

“One of the fallouts of the last NEC meeting was the resuscitation of the Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committee, which is saddled with the responsibility of identifying the area of antiparty and the dramatis personae involved in the activities, and recommend appropriate punitive measures against those who have been found guilty to serve as deterrent to future occurrence.

“Unfortunately, that hasn’t been done, and so to that extent, as a voluntary organization, if the members involved insist they are still members of the party, until actions are taken by the Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committe we want to take that they are still members of the party,” he added.

On expectations from the next NEC meeting scheduled for August 15 as it concerns the position of the National Chairman of the party, the Senate Minority Leader said the party’s constitution had a well spelt out succession plan.

“The constitution of our party has a well spelt-out succession plan. Section 35 (3C) states that where a vacancy exists, someone from the zone of the immediate past occupier of the office shall be appointed by NEC to complete the tenure of the person who vacated the office.

“For the position of the National Chairman, we will look at the succession plan of the party, in accordance with the constitutional provisions, and produce a replacement for Senator Iyorchia Ayu from North Central now that he has heeded to our plea and withdrawn his case from the court. We will go to the next NEC meeting with open minds and invoke the relevant sections of the constitution to produce his replacement,” he stated.

Senator Moro appealed to members and stakeholders of the party to have some level of circumspection and restraints in their actions and utterances so as not to further polarize the party. He assured that everything humanly possible would be done to put the party on its winning ways, to rescue Nigerians from the grinding poverty and sufferings that the ruling APC has plunged them into.

Peter Obi can’t deny I recommended him to Atiku – Omokri

Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri has revealed that he recommended Peter Obi to former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar as a running mate.

Omokri disclosed this in an interview with Seun Okinbaloye via his podcast, Mic On.

He vowed to support Atiku if he decides to run in 2027 presidential election.

He said: “Peter Obi can’t deny that I was the one who recommended him to Waziri Atiku Abubakar when he asked me to help choose a running mate in 2019.

“I called former President Jonathan and he told me it’s Peter Obi, but I told him I just can’t submit one name. We padded the list with others while making Obi’s name look very rosy.

“Atiku chose Obi so after a man had done me just great honour, I will now turn around and be supporting his opponent in the next election?

“I can’t do that, if Atiku decide to contest in 2027 and get the PDP’s presidential candidate, I’m duty bound to support him.”

  • Presidency cautions Atiku against negative economic assumptions

Presidency cautions Atiku against negative economic assumptions

The presidency has cautioned former Vice Presiden Atiku Abubakar against negative assumptions about the economy in the face of the various positive reforms instituted by the administration.

Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, stated this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

He said that the claims by Atiku on the decisions taken at the last meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the state governors was misconstrued and not a true representation of what transpired.

Onanuga said that the PDP presidential candidate also failed to prescribe a better policy option to what the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, and his team are executing at the apex bank.

“First of all, it was not true that President Tinubu’s meeting last Thursday with the 36 State Governors was centred on discussing foreign exchange crisis and currency fluctuation.

“What was discussed in the main was food supply and how to drastically reduce the food prices. The Minister of Information, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, gave a briefing about the meeting, revealing the highlights to State House Correspondents,” he said.

Onanuga said that the meeting established a nexus between the state of security and the rising cost of food as well as how hoarders are warehousing food, creating artificial scarcity and creating high cost of food items.

He explained that the meeting dwelled on how the Forest rangers are to be strengthened and armed, while police are to recruit more men and the National Economic Council to deepen discussions about creating state police.

In resolving the food crisis, Onanuga said the President also affirmed at the meeting his approval for the release of 42,000 Metric tonnes of grains from the national reserve.

He said that government was in discussion with rice millers to get another 60,000 metric tonnes of grains to be released to citizens.

“President Tinubu said he does not support price control and importation of food. Nigeria, he believes, can grow enough food to feed its citizens and spare some for export.

“The present government is executing the cultivation of 500,000 hectares for wheat, maize, and rice in many states. Governors are expected to participate in this programme, one of the reasons for last Thursday’s meeting.”

He said that contrary to what Atiku claimed, there was no deliberation on currency fluctuation at the meeting.

The Presidential aide said such decisions are within the purview of the Central Bank, which has the autonomy to handle the country’s monetary policies.

“As a matter of fact, the President enjoined the governors, in passing, to allow the CBN do its work and refrain from dabbling into what is within the CBN’s purview.

“If he would be true to himself and what actually transpired at the meeting, we expected Alhaji Atiku to praise President Tinubu for maintaining this stance and for not interfering with the business of Central Bank.

“It is false and preposterous for Atiku to claim that CBN’s FX management policy was hurriedly put together without proper plans and consultations with stakeholders.

“(It is also not true) that the apex bank is hamstrung by Tinubu’s government in implementing a sound FX Management Policy.”

He said the CBN governor was implementing a raft of policies to stabilise the Naira and end volatility in the market, adding that this was already yielding positive results.

Onanuga cited the latest Nigeria Bureau of Statistics report of an increased capital importation, adding that in the fourth quarter of 2023, Nigeria recorded a 66.27 per cent increase in capital inflow.

He said that there was an improvement from the Q3 of 654.65 million dollars, which rose to 1.09 billion dollars in Q4.

“Alhaji Atiku will agree that the rise in capital inflow suggests massive investors’ confidence in Nigeria and the policy direction of the Tinubu administration.

“Juxtaposed with the policy options being implemented by the CBN, Atiku’s alternative of a controlled floatation of the Naira is similar to the policy of Godwin Emefiele.”

He said that the Emefiele policy led to the spending of 1.5 billion dollars monthly to shore up the Naira, while arbitrage or round tripping went on unhindered.
