  • Rivers, Benue Massacres: Atiku condemns killings, says Nigeria’s diversity, its strength

Former Vice President of Nigeria and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar has described as unacceptable the cycle of blood-letting that has led to the loss of precious lives across the country.

Atiku Abubakar made the charge against the backdrop of recent killings in Rivers, Kaduna, Benue and other parts of the country including the Wednesday early morning suicide bombing attack, at Gamboru Mosque in Borno, barely three days into the New Year.

The Waziri Adamawa, according to a statement by his media office in Abuja on Wednesday, said the killings in those states, and other senseless killings and reprisal blood-letting that has preceded them in the past across our country is ungodly, a throwback to the stone age, and a hindrance to the promotion of peace and unity in the country.

Atiku Abubakar stressed that the diversity of Nigeria remains one of its strongest points, reminding leaders of all persuasion and at all levels to ensure that they promote the things that unite us rather than those that create divisions.

“That the Almighty in His Wisdom made us a nation of different tongues and tribes; made us Africa’s most populous nation with more than 300 tribes is no accident. If well enhanced, our diversity should be our biggest strength.

“There cannot be development when innocent lives are being lost in a seeming endless cycle of attacks and reprisals. While we should hold every life as precious, it is more painful that the victims of these attacks are women and youths – the demography that we depend upon to drive development.”

Atiku Abubakar urged Nigerians to use the opportunity of the New Year to reflect on these needless killings and to resolve to live in peace and harmony.

He prays for fortitude to the bereaved families.

  • Dogara, Tambuwal, El-Rufai, Atiku, others mourn Lawal Kaita

Dogara, Tambuwal, El-Rufai, Atiku, others mourn Lawal Kaita

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara has expressed sadness over the demise of second republic Governor of old Kaduna State, Alhaji Lawal Kaita who died at the age of 85.

In a statement, issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Turaki Hassan, the Speaker described the late elder statesman as a man of outstanding character and a committed Democrat, who devoted his life to working for the development of democracy in Nigeria.

While noting the exploits and positive contributions of the late Alhaji Kaita as a member of Constituent Assembly that midwifed Nigeria’s Constitution and Governor of old Kaduna State, Dogara said he will continue to be remembered for his selfless service, patriotism and abiding faith in the unity and progress of the country.

” Alhaji Lawal Kaita was a very courageous man who left a legacy of service and built bridges of friendship and unity across the north and the country in general”.

“He will continue to be honoured and remembered by present and future generations for his dedication to the service of his people during his tenure as a Governor and even after”.

” Painful as his death is, we are however consoled with the fact that Alhaji Kaita left an indelible footprint and legacy of service to the society as well as commitment to the ideals of democracy and nationhood “.

While condoling with the bereaved family, the government and people of Katsina state, Speaker Dogara prayed God Almighty to grant the deceased eternal rest.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has also condoled with the government and people of Kaduna State over the passing of Kaita.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, Imam Imam, the governor said Mr. Kaita made invaluable contributions to the development of the country.

“He was an acclaimed pacesetter who, along with other patriotic Nigerians of his generation, fought for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria at the turn of the century. His life is an example in dedication and commitment to democratic norms and values.

“Nigeria will remember the deceased as a man who gave his best years towards the development of multi-party politics. His contributions have enriched governance process at state and federal levels,” he added.

While praying to Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest and his family the fortitude to bear the loss, Mr. Tambuwal appealed to both the Kaduna and Katsina state governments to immortalise the deceased for the benefit of future generation.

Similarly, a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, described the late Mr. Kaita, as a fearless democrat whose immense contribution to Nigeria’s democratic struggles would be etched in brass.

Reacting to the demise of Kaita at 85, the former vice president said Mr. Kaita, who was his political associate, was a man of remarkable virtues who inspired whoever interacted with him.

According to Mr. Abubakar, few Nigerian politicians have the courage to disagree with the people in power in order to sustain political patronage for survival.

He explained that the late Mr. Kaita was never afraid to speak his mind in pursuit of his principles, including his insistence that political parties must respect internal democracy in order to be credible.

He noted that the late Mr. Kaita had left an unblemished public service record because politicians of his generation were motivated by the passion for service.

He recalled that his close association with Mr. Kaita was a beneficial experience because he was a man of vast knowledge of politics and intricacies.

President Muhammad Buhari had earlier expressed his condolence in a similar message.

In his reaction, the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai described Mr. Kaita as “a quintessential leader and patriot”.

Mr. El-Rufai in a condolence message issued by his spokesman, Samuel Aruwan, said the deceased had exhibited courage in leadership and patriotism in all his political engagements during his life time.

“Alhaji Lawal Kaita was a quintessential and courageous leader who served the old Kaduna State with dedication and commitment in the course of his leadership in 1983.

“As an elected governor of the old Kaduna State, he contributed immensely to the development, unity and progress of the old Kaduna state.

“Alhaji Kaita was a patriot and a role model for present and future leaders.’’

Also, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) said it received the news of the death of Mr. Kaita, one of its foundation members, with shock; adding that the deceased was a bridge-builder.

“Nigeria has lost one of its illustrious elder statesmen, a bridge builder and democrat.

“Late Kaita will be remembered for his humility, commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians.

“May Allah grant his soul eternal peace in Aljanna Firdaus,’’ the ACF said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim.

He also added that the attack from APC governors was as a result of fear of Atiku in 2019.

In his tweets on Tuesday he wrote: “Judging by the way in which APC governors like Nasir El Rufai and Bello Masari are firing shots at@atiku two things are clear.

Firstly that his exit from their dying party has hurt them deeply and secondly that their greatest fear is an @atiku bid for the Presidency in 2019.”

  • 2019: Atiku too desperate to be president – Buhari’s adviser

…says former Vice President will leave PDP if he doesn’t realise presidential ambition in 2019

The Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babefemi Ojudu hassaid former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar is too desperate to be president in 2019, hence his recent defection to the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He chided the Waziri Adamawa for twisting facts and wiping up sentiments against the Buhari administration and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for partisan reasons.

Ojudu said Atiku’s departure was not surprising to the APC, stressing that it was typical of the former vice president to call it quits with a platform that cannot guarantee his bid for the highest office.

He recalled that Atiku has always destroyed the parties that hosted him by turning around to pull it down, following his inability to clinch the nomination ticket.

Ojudu spoke on Channels Television’s Sunrise on the implications Atiku’s defection for himself, the PDP and the APC.

Describing Atiku as a serial defector, the political adviser said the gale of defections peculiar to the eminent politician underscored his desperation for power.

He said the Turaki Adamawa lied about his marginalisation in the APC, recalling that he often declined to make any constructive and useful contribution during the meetings of party’s founding fathers.

Ojudu said: “Atiku’s defection is not surprising . During the meeting of the G-19, the Legacy Group that formed the APC, Atiku was there. We laid our programmes as a government before the party leaders and asked for their contributions. He was the only person who refused to talk. The second time the meeting was called, Atiku did not attend. We knew that he will leave. Each time he wants to leave a house, he demolishes the house.

However, the presidential adviser said it will be myopic to dismiss Atiku as a politician without weight, judging by his status and antecedents in politics.

Ojudu also said that Atiku has the right to defect under the constitution to seek refuge in any party, despite his constrains and limitations.

He stressed: “It will be stupid to dismiss his weight. He is an asset to an extent that he stays there. His goal is to be the president. If he cannot get the ticket, he will leave.”

Ojudu acknowledged the complaint by kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai on the alleged marginalisation of party elders, which Atiku also cited as reason for leaving the APC, saying that the situation has been corrected.

He said: “There is no perfect organisation and there is no perfect government. The Kaduna governor expressed hos mkind and he has joined others to put things right. You don’t jump out.”

Ojudu said Atiku was fed up with the APC the moment he failed to get the presidential ticket atv the primary, adding that he is now playing his last card.

He added: “Atiku is playing his last card. He is desperate to be president. If President Buhari get a second term, he knows that the presidency will go to another region. The presidency will not go to another region. Before it goes back to the North, it may take years and he would have become old.”

Ojudu also dismissed Atiku’s allegation that the government has not done much for the youths, clarifying that efforts were being made to create jobs in many ways, including massive investment in agriculture.

He challenged the former vice president to list his contribution to job creation in his native Adamawa State.

Ojudu queried: “What were the contributions of Atiku to APC’s efforts to rebuild Nigeria? What has he done as a godfather in Adamawa to solve the problem of unemployment. What agenda for youths did he take to the president that was rejected?”

The political adviser gave the Buhari administration a pas mark, saying that it is a government of planning and anti-corruption.

He said: “There is planning and there is no siphoning of public funds.”

  • Show proves that you funded Buhari’s campaign in 2015, El-Rufai tells Atiku

Show proves that you funded Buhari’s campaign in 2015, El-Rufai tells Atiku

Governor Nasir El-Rufai on Wednesday challenged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to show proves he (Atiku) bankrolled President Muhammadu Buhari’s presidential campaign in 2015.

El-Rufai spoke on a Voice of America (VOA) Hausa Service Programme, “Democracy Today”, which was monitored in Kaduna.

The former VP and former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who has also plans to run for president, were also featured on the programme.

When asked about his intention to run in 2019, Atiku simply said he had not made up his mind. “When I decide, I will let the world know,” he said.

Lamido said PDP was happy to have Atiku back, but his return would not threaten his ambition.

“We are happy that former Vice-President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is back to PDP. PDP made him and that he is back to the party is our joy. Not only him, in fact, we want others who left the party like Senate President Bukola Saraki and former governors to come back

“If our interest is to see the progress and development of Nigeria, then, we should also pray that everyone who left should return home.”

El-Rufai said: “We in the APC were aware from the outset that Atiku was going to leave the APC back to the PDP in December and we thank God that he left in November.

“Atiku had seen that we in the APC, especially the APC governors, had resolved to support President Muhammadu Buhari to run again in 2019. That is why he left APC since he was only looking for where to contest for president.

“Even in the 2015 APC primary election, Atiku didn’t come second; he was floored by Kwankwaso. So, even if President Buhari decides not to contest, Atiku knows that the APC ticket is not sure for him. Majority of the APC governors have endorsed President Buhari as our candidate for 2019.

“And God has continued to improve the health condition of the President. Each time I see him, I thank God and I still pray that God continues to give him sound health.

“So, by 2019, we are waiting to see Atiku contest; we are waiting to contest against him and see what happens. I cannot lose sleep because Atiku wants to contest because, by God’s grace, this is the reign of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Agreed, in politics if you lose even only one person, it should worry you, but the utterances of the former Vice President that APC used his money who did he give the money to? For me, I know those that supported us with their money and property that we used during election, and I never heard the name of Atiku that he brought a dime. If Atiku said he brought money, who did he give it to? Let him come and say it and how much did he give and what was it used for?

“And, in fact, if Atiku brought money, I ought to know, because I was part of the leadership of the party and during campaign, along with former Governor Rotimi Amaechi. We were at the centre of the presidential campaign. Therefore, we are supposed to know. So, let him mention who he gave the money and how much?

“Asked about a large number of APC members who are likely to follow Atiku to PDP, El-Rufai said: “Sure, we know that, we cannot rule out the possibility of some greedy people following him; those that are following material things. But, if people will consider how we can work for the progress of our country, everybody knows that you cannot compare Atiku with President Muhammadu Buhari,” El-Rufai said.

  • Nigerians Should be Cynical about Atiku’s Ambition – Hamilton Odunze

    By Hamilton Odunze

I am cynical about politicians who do not have guiding principles. Nigerians should be cynical about such politicians, too. In fact, people such as Mahatma Gandhi who seek meaningful solutions to wider social problems are always cynical about politicians or politics without principle. This is why he said that politics without principle has no truth(s) for justifying intentions and actions and therefore leads to violence. He included politics without principles as one of the seven deadly social sins.

Am I alone? Does anyone else share my view that Atiku Abubarkar is committing a deadly social sin? Can his recent political move be characterized as politics without principle? I say this due to the regularity with which he switches political parties and affiliations. During the past few years, Atiku Abubakar has switched from People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC) and back to PDP. I am not arguing that switching political affiliations is wrong, but the frequency with which Atiku does it is a clear indication that he has no underlying political ideology or principle, or that his political goals and ambitions are simply self-serving. No matter the reason why Atiku switches parties, it is not good for democracy in Nigeria.

Just a few days ago while speaking at the official opening of the Chicken Cottage restaurant at Jabi Lake Mall in Abuja, Abubarkar said he will get Nigeria working again by providing gainful employment to teeming youths across the country. In the current political climate, the promise of providing gainful employment to Nigerians does not suffice. The conversation has moved on because Nigerians are sick and tired of feel-good promises. Atiku and anybody else who is serious about becoming president should focus on discussing how Nigeria should be structured. But even at face value, Atiku’s promise has many problems.

The first thing wrong with Atiku’s promise is that he failed to provide an economic plan leading to job creation. Unfortunately, many of those who are aspiring to the presidency of Nigeria do not have any real and measurable economic plans for the country. For example, in the United States, some candidates believe that lower corporate taxes will provide companies with the leverage needed to hire people and to reduce unemployment. Meanwhile, others believe that lower taxes on the middle class will create more businesses and ultimately lead to a more robust economy.

The second thing wrong is that Atiku takes the intelligence of Nigerians for granted. What makes him think that Nigerians are so naïve and imprudent to mortgage their futures in the hands of a man who has switched political parties three times in just a few years? In my opinion, his foolhardy political moves—on top of his baiting Nigerians by telling them he will provide hope for youths—is an outright insult. But because of what is commonly known as the Nigerian factor—money exchanging hands, election manipulation, and cronyism—I will not count Atiku out of becoming Nigeria’s next president. The truth is that politicians such as Atiku continue to undermine democracy by engaging in and promoting politics without any underlying ideology.

Atiku wants Nigerians to believe that he is the great leader for which we have been waiting. But what is his idea about how Nigeria should be structured going forward? Great leaders are known to have profound ideas about how society can be organized for the common good. Take Thomas Jefferson, whom many Americans believe is one of America’s greatest presidents, for example. Jefferson advocated and galvanized strong opposition to aristocracy of any form, opposition to corruption and an insistence on virtue in a version of American Republicanism that came to be known as Jeffersonian democracy. These are the kinds of original ideas that form the bases from which voters can evaluate candidates.

The frequency with which politicians in Nigeria switch parties is dizzying. Just a few years ago, five governors who were elected under PDP switched to APC. The main problem with such rapid political maneuvers is that it does not give rational voters the tools they need to make informed political decisions. Yet, for democracy to function as the best form of government, voters must make informed decisions.

Political parties in Nigeria are not helping matters. These parties are formed without any underlying ideologies. But since ancient Greeks started practicing democracy, democratic societies have formed political parties by bringing together people with common underlying ideologies regarding how society should be organized to achieve the greater good for all. It is troubling that at a time of constitutional and economic crisis, those who are aspiring to lead Nigeria are unable to articulate and explain ideas that will give Nigerians hope. If Atiku does not articulate a clear ideological basis for his campaign, it is only fair to assume that he is putting together another group of vultures seeking to feast on the carcass of Nigeria.

  • I will provide gainful employment to thousands of Nigerians – Atiku

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has pledged his readiness to get Nigeria to work again through the provision of gainful employment for her teeming youths across the country.

The ex-number two citizen stated this Saturday at the official opening of Chicken Cottage quick service restaurant at the Jabi Lake Mall in Abuja. The company founded by Atiku is aiming to become the number one chicken restaurant in Nigeria in the next few years.

He said: “You can be sure that having at least one chicken cottage in every state will help get Nigerians working again.

We will provide gainful employment to thousands of Nigerians who would be earning living wages which in turn contributes to reducing unemployment in Nigeria .

“As part of our objectives, we aim to be the number one chicken restaurant chain in Nigeria. After this outlet, we intend to open several other outlets in strategically important locations in Nigeria.

“Our target is to have at least one chicken cottage restaurant in every State in Nigeria.

Ultimately, we intend to develop chicken cottage Nigeria as the regional hub for all operations in Sub-Saharan Africa. Towards this end I have given approval to the management to commence talks with Chicken Cottage International.”

He promised to source foodstuff locally as a way of empowering local farmers in their agrarian business saying, “My ultimate joy will be to patronise our local farmers and see them have their produce bought and used here in Nigeria and Africa thereby empowering them.

Furthermore, the multiplier benefits of this enterprise would extend to transporters, beverage suppliers, Appliance manufacturers, Artisans, Furniture makers, etc.”

The Waziri Adamawa was accompanied to the event by some of his political associates including the lawmaker representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, Senator Ben Murray Bruce.

  • 2019: PDP ready to sack APC for deceiving Nigerians in 2015 – Atiku

2019: PDP ready to sack APC for deceiving Nigerians in 2015 – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the enemy of Nigeria, saying it would take a united and coherent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to sack the APC government in 2019.

Atiku stated this in a congratulatory message to the newly elected national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus and other officials elected at the just concluded national convention of the party.

The statement, released by his media office on Sunday said the immediate challenge before the newly elected national officers of the PDP was to run an all-inclusive administration where the various interests within the party can find accommodation.

He added that Nigerians are looking up to the PDP for unity in the party, “because it takes a united and coherent PDP to sack the APC government in 2019″.

The statement said, “Our great party, the PDP, is, again, at the threshold of an historical moment. Just as we mobilised to put an end to prolonged military rule in 1999, the people of Nigeria at this moment look up to us to rescue the country from the mis-government of the APC.

Arising from our elective congress, there should be no victor and no vanquished. Our paramount attention should be focused at sacking a government that deceived the people of Nigeria into power by promising our youths three million jobs annually, only to deliver three million job losses annually; a government that is repeatedly living in denial of its commitment to restructuring. We must be united to take power back to where it belongs: the Nigerian people.

As members of the PDP, we must take pride in being able to hold a national convention and in so doing live up to the bill of being a truly democratic political party. Our major opponent has not been able to achieve this feat and I join millions of our party members to congratulate the Ahmed Makarfi-led national caretaker committee.

I understand that there are complaints and grievances from many of the co-contestants in the congress. I am aware that the PDP has a mechanism for addressing such complaints and it is important that such avenues of redress are made available for members to explore without let or hindrance. Meantime, I call on all our leaders and members to rally the new executive for the sake of our party, Nigeria and the good of our people”.
