2019: We are planning Buhari’s retirement; Atiku is next president of Nigeria – PDP Senator

Senator representing PDP/Bayelsa East, Ben Murray-Bruce on Sunday said his party (Peoples Democratic Party) was already making a good retirement package for President Muhammadu Buhari while also making preparations to install former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar as next President of Nigeria.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Atiku announced his defection to the opposition, PDP on Sunday after resigning his membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, last week.

Murray-Bruce tweeted from his Twitter handle @benmurraybruce, “Just watched @atiku, the next President of Nigeria,#Atikulately announcing he would return to my party, the @OfficialPDPNig.

“We in the PDP already have a good retirement package for President @MBuhari. Time to#ChangeTheChange.”

In his defection speech, the former Vice President said:

“Some of you may know that I was elected Vice President under the banner of the PDP, which is the political party I had helped to found some ten years before.

“And some of you may also know that I left the PDP four years ago when I believed it was no longer aligned to the principles of equity, democracy and social justice upon which we had founded it.

“I joined the APC as I had hoped it would be the new force that would help improve life for our people and I was excited about the party’s manifesto to create three million new jobs a year.

“The result has not been the change people had been promised or voted for, as in the last two years almost three million Nigerians have lost their jobs.

“And today with a record 25% of people aged 18-25 unemployed, I can see how difficult it is for our youths to find a job.

  • 2019: PDP welcomes Atiku ‘home’, urges others frustrated in APC to follow suit

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has welcomed the return of the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, to its fold on Sunday while calling on other aggrieved members in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other parties to follow suit.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the former vice president announced that that he is joining the PDP after resigning from the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, last week.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Dayo Adeyeye, late on sunday, PDP said ” we are indeed glad that he has realised the unbridled lies/deceit of his former Party, the All Progressive Congress, APC.

The PDP remains his home; a house he was part of building and which he helped to nurture. We believe his return will add value in the process of rebuilding our Party to greater heights”.

The PDP described Mr. Abubakar’s decision to rejoin it as “another milestone recorded by the current leadership of our party in its quest to reconcile, rebuild and restructure the PDP ahead of the 2019 General Elections and beyond.

We will continue to remain transparent and dedicated to the service of this party. Again, we want to use this opportunity to call on all our members that are still in the APC or other parties to return home. ‎

We are equally extending our invitation to all those in the APC who are frustrated by the party’s failure to deliver the goods. Anyone who is desirous of a return to the era of abundance and freedom under the PDP administration is welcome. The umbrella is big enough to accommodate all.

We enjoin our members nationwide to come together as one family, as we march to Eagle Square, Abuja on Saturday 9 – Sunday 10, December 2017 to elect our new leaders who will manage the affairs of our party at the national level,” the statement said.

  • Ekweremadu hails Atiku’s return to PDP

The Deputy President of the Senate, Mr Ike Ekweremadu, has described the return of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a welcomed development.

Ekeremadu, according to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Uche Anichukwu, on Sunday, was reacting to the defection of the former vice president from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP.

He said that the move had rekindled hope not only for the party, but the nation’s democracy.

“I urge all former PDP faithful who left for various reasons as well as other progressive-minded Nigerians to emulate Alhaji Atiku.

”They should reunite under the umbrella to salvage the nation because I see a new and better Nigeria coming in 2019.

“I see a country where corruption will be eradicated, a nation that will be a pride to Africa and admiration of the international community.

”I see a nation where no man will be oppressed, intimidated, persecuted or sidelined on account of ethnicity, religion or political persuasion.

”No amount of desperation will stop the will of God for Nigeria in 2019,” he said.

APC members will not join Atiku in PDP, says lawmaker

A member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Babajimi Benson, said on Sunday that he did not foresee exodus of members of the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Benson said this in an interview with the NewsGuru on Sunday in Abuja shortly after the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, formally joined the opposition PDP.

TNG recalls that Atiku on Nov. 24 announced his resignation of his membership of the ruling APC.

He said the complaints he had with the PDP under which he was vice president from 1999 to 2007, had been resolved, laying the groundwork for his return.

“I saw an article that said that the transfer season is open with Atiku’s move. However, while I still see a lot of influx into the APC, I see a trickle into the PDP, the lawmaker said.

Benson urged members of the APC not to be deterred by Atiku’s defection to PDP.

He said that the move by the former vice-president had provided a reason for the ruling party to put its house in order.

The lawmaker, who represents Ikorodu Federal Constituency of Lagos, however described Atiku’s exit as a minus for the APC.

“Anybody whether big, small, mighty, tiny or skinny that leaves APC it is a loss to the party.

“It is also an opportunity for us to put our house in order,” he ordered.

  • Presidential ticket: I’m not excluded from running, says Makarfi as Atiku officially joins PDP

Presidential ticket: I’m not excluded from running, says Makarfi as Atiku officially joins PDP

Ahmed Makarfi, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caretaker committee, says he could still contest the party’s presidential ticket in spite of the return of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to the party.

Speaking in the current edition of The Interview, Makarfi addressed the question about his own interest.

“I have heard the rumour (that I am running), it has been there since 2007… I have thought of it. By the time I leave as caretaker committee chairman on 9th or 10th, there’ll still be ten months to the party primaries. By any law or the party’s guidelines, I’m not excluded,” he said, in spite of speculation that Atiku is gunning for the party’s presidential ticket.

Ayo Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, has also indicated interest, but Makarfi said Fayose’s declaration of interest in the party’s presidential ticket “is uncalled for and unhealthy” since the party has zoned the ticket to the north.

He also said the PDP was expecting more defections after Atiku’s move from the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party.

“For some strategic reasons, don’t expect a lot of people to move to the PDP now. People are in APC for different reasons. Wait for the time when everybody will be on his own, you will see the influx of people into the PDP,” he said.

Makarfi, who reportedly came close to being the PDP’s presidential nominee in 2006, finally revealed how former President Olusegun Obasanjo schemed him out, even though an internal party assessment had returned him as the most favourable candidate.

  • 2019: I stand with Buhari, APC not Atiku – Lalong

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State has said despite being a close associate of former vice president Atiku Abubakar, says he is not perturbed by the later’s resignation from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Atiku had last week, announced his resignation from the APC, a party he joined others to build into a strong political force that wrestled power from the PDP in 2015.

The former vice president and Lalong had been very close friends in the PDP before moving to the APC, making pundits to list Lalong among governors Atiku had boasted would soon join him in his new political fold.

But Lalong told newsmen on Sunday in Jos that he would not leave the APC to join Atiku.

“We reached out to Atiku while building the APC structure in Plateau and received some help from him, but my loyalty is with the APC. My loyalty is with President Buhari and my people have endorsed him for a second term.

“Whatever happens in another party does not concern me. We are only waiting for the APC National Convention to endorse Buhari for a second tenure,” he said.

He, however, stated that it was the constitutional right of every Nigerian to decide which political group to associate with.

  • Atiku, 2019 and Obasanjo’s political hegemony, By Ehichioya Ezomon

    By Ehichioya Ezomon

Is former President Olusegun Obasanjo now God that has the power to forgive sins? This is the question of the day, as Nigeria marches towards the 2019 general elections, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is reportedly under pressure to go and “apologise” to Obasanjo and “beg him for forgiveness of his sins” against him (Obasanjo).

Contributing to this debate, former President Goodluck Jonathan said that the only hindrance to Atiku achieving his life-long ambition to be president was Obasanjo. Hence, he needed to “go and beg him for forgiveness,” without which Atiku should more or less forget his quest.

Dr. Jonathan’s admonition reflects the level politics and politicians have sunk in Nigeria: That man, and not God, as the teachings of the Holy Books indicate (Romans 13:1; Daniel 2:20-22; Proverbs 5:15-16; 1 Samuel 2:7-8), is the ultimate “Kingmaker.” Consider Jonathan’s averment that their “boss, Baba OBJ, the boss of all bosses,” must be appeased because, “we’ve all learnt at different times that you ignore OBJ at your own peril. OBJ has the magic wand, respected at home and abroad.”

Many discerning polity watchers are not surprised by Jonathan’s motto, having regard to his meteoric climb up the political ladder of the country: From lecturer to Deputy Governor and Governor of Bayelsa State, and from Vice President to Acting President, and President of Nigeria, without really contesting, until 2015, for the positions, thanks majorly to the ‘benevolence’ of Chief Obasanjo as president of Nigeria.

Remarkably, Obasanjo opposed Jonathan’s 2015 candidature (that eventually failed at the polls) because it abridged the North’s presidential slot of two terms of four years each, as the Presidency rotates between the North and South every eight years. The slot Jonathan vied for “belonged” to the North, which had barely utilised three years of it through the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, with Jonathan as the Vice President.

It’s now history how Obasanjo used the anti-graft agencies to hound qualified Nigerians out of the 2007 presidential race, and railroaded a very sickly Yar’Adua in as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Jonathan as his running mate.

As experience is the best teacher, Jonathan is well-placed to counsel Atiku on the path to the presidency. The only snag being that Atiku would be charting a treacherous political terrain should he go begging Obasanjo, rather than God and the populace, to crown him president in 2015. The reasons are many but a few will suffice here.

    * For Obasanjo to get his second term in 2003, he reportedly knelt for his deputy, Atiku who, backed by majority of the PDP governors, wanted the presidential ticket.

    * While still Vice President under the PDP, Atiku joined the 2007 presidential race on the opposition Action Congress (AC) platform, but was disqualified by INEC, allegedly engineered by President Obasanjo. Atiku went to court and got reprieve to contest.

    * Atiku reportedly pushed, several times, for Obasanjo’s impeachment by the National Assembly. Recall the display of piles of millions of hard currencies on the floor of the Assembly, purportedly to bribe the lawmakers!

    * Atiku often boasts of working against the infamous Obasanjo “Third Term Agenda” that would have enabled him to stay in office for 12 years (some feared “for life”), and use it as a bragging right.

    * Without exhibiting a scintilla of evidence, Obasanjo has always labelled Atiku as corrupt. So, how could he, in good conscience, endorse him for the presidency of Nigeria?

These and other reasons sum up Obasanjo’s memorable vow that, “Only over my dead body will Atiku become president of Nigeria.” Thus, to spite Atiku, Obasanjo nominated Yar’Adua (and Jonathan) as the PDP candidate in 2007. He vigorously campaigned for Yar’Adua, who was frequently indisposed. (Think back that Obasanjo’s stomp query: “Umoru, are you dead?” to the unfounded reported demise of Yar’Adua abroad!)

Obasanjo has never relented in de-marketing Atiku, even reportedly during the December 10, 2014 presidential primaries of the fledgling All Progressives Congress, in which Atiku placed third behind Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, respectively.

Now the nagging question: “Is Atiku going to ‘beg’ Obasanjo to forgive him of the ‘sins’ against him?” Both in his personality and normality, the ‘Ebora Owu’ does not forget, and forgive. And who would contend that he hasn’t considered the implications of “making Atiku president,” only for the ‘Waziri Adamawa’ to “show Obasanjo pepper” for denying him twice (2003 and 2007) the presidency, and trolling him and hanging on his neck the label of corruption over the years?

Should he, indeed, beg Obasanjo, how would the average Nigerian – the electorate, and not the politicians – view Atiku Abubakar? Is it as a man of integrity and independent-minded deserving of the Office of the President of Nigeria? Or as a desperate politician, who, notwithstanding his acclaimed political reach and war chest, would do anything, including beholden to godfather(s), to achieve his ambition?

Well, the decision is Atiku’s to make, as politicians see possibilities in impossibilities. And he might have crossed the rubicon, having told the world that he had “consulted with God” before leaving the APC. I would advise, though, he sticks with that “consultation,” and not to set much store by man, who cannot play God, such as Obasanjo is being held up by Jonathan and others.

#ENDSARS: Atiku, Amnesty International, others join support for scrapping of SARS

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has joined a social media campaign #ENDSARS to scrap the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) over its alleged assault and brutality of young Nigerians.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the social media, especially Twitter has recently been awash with intense calls for the scrapping of the unit.

The former Vice President who joined the campaign on Sunday tweeted: The arbitrary harassment of young Nigerians by Police (who should be protecting them) has no place in a democratic society.

The #EndSARS protest shows Nigerian youth are upset and the matter needs urgent attention.

Also, Amnesty International also accused the police unit of allegedly using torture to forcefully extract information from suspects.

However, as a way of pacifying the public, the Nigerian Police Force Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit, PCRRU, had on Saturday announced the opening of channels through which the public can report complaints about SARS.

The move by the PCRRU may be connected to the public outcry that has trailed the activities of many SARS officials in recent times.

Late in October 2017, a 2015 graduate of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ekwere Imoh, was shot by policemen attached to SARS, Oyo State Police Command. The policemen also shot a female friend of his, identified simply as Doris, who was with him. There were no concrete reasons for shooting the duo as they were neither criminals nor under arrest.

Earlier in the same month, a lady, Kachi Anifela Zion, accused officers of SARS in Ilorin of sexual molestation. She said a male SARS official under the pretence of searching her, dipped his hand in her underwear.

She further revealed that the SARS official threatened to beat her if she shouted, adding that the officer continued to fondle, rough handle and humiliate her for several minutes. The SARS official implicated in the matter was later arrested.

  • “Buhari was never banned from entering US,” Presidency replies Atiku

The presidency has dismissed as false and untrue the claim by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar that “for about 15 years, (PresidentMuhammadu) Buhari could not enter America on account of religious considerations”.

Mr Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, described the claims as ““fictive concoction’’.

According to the presidential aide, at no time was President Buhari, as a private person, ever forbidden from entering any country in the world.

He said:“This fictive concoction being passed off as truth is mind boggling, coming from a former Number Two man of Nigeria, who should know the truth.

“”At no time was President Buhari, as a private person, ever forbidden from entering any country in the world. Rather, the rest of the world has always held Muhammadu Buhari as a man of sterling qualities, strong on integrity, transparency and accountability.

“”The same testimony is still borne of the Nigerian President by many world leaders today.

““It is curious that former VP Abubakar had been asked why he had not visited America for over a decade, something that had been a stubborn fact dogging his footsteps.

““Instead of answering directly, he begged the question, saying Buhari also had been disallowed from entering the same country for 15 years, before becoming President.”

The presidential media aide maintained that what the former vice-president said only existed in the realm of his imagination.

“”We hereby make it resoundingly clear that what the former Vice President said only exists in the realm of his imagination. If he has issues to settle with American authorities, he should do so, rather than clutch at a straw.’’
