UCL: Real Madrid beat Atletico on penalties to reach last eight

Title holders Real Madrid survived a missed penalty from Vinicius Junior in regulation when they beat crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid 4-2 on penalties for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Antonio Rüdiger sealed the last 16 victory as goalkeeper Jan Oblak got his hands on the ball but couldn’t stop it from crossing the line.

Oblak had saved from Lucas Vazquez in the shoot-out but Atletico’s Julian Alvarez had his successful kick disallowed upon review because he touched the ball with both feet, and Marcos Llorente hit the crossbar with his attempt.

Record winners Real had won the first leg 2-1 at home but Conor Gallagher levelled it up for Atletico in the opening minute at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Vinicius Junior had the big chance to restore Real’s aggregate advantage but fired the penalty high over the crossbar in the 70th minute after Clement Lenglet had brought down Kylian Mbappe.

Real maintained their perfect record against Atletico in knock-out ties and finals in the event, and now meet Arsenal, who completed an emphatic 9-3 aggregate victory against PSV Eindhoven with a 2-2 home draw.

Last season’s runners-up Borussia Dortmund won 2-1 at French side Lille to advance 3-2 for a date with Barcelona.

Marco Asensio’s brace helped Aston Villa beat 10-man Club Brugge 3-0 on the night and 6-1 overall and into a quarter-final meeting with his parent club and Liverpool conquerors Paris Saint-Germain.

The other quarter-final tie is Bayern Munich v Inter Milan, with the matches set to be played April 8/9 and April 15/16.

Brahim Diaz scored a brilliant winner to give Real Madrid a slender advantage over city rivals Atletico after the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Rodrygo put the hosts ahead inside four minutes in the Bernabeu when he sprinted past Javi Galan and chopped inside the box before bending a wonderful hit past Jan Oblak.

Atletico, though, quickly settled into the game and levelled in the 32nd minute with another wonderful goal.

The in-form Julian Alvarez picked up the ball on the left side of the box, wrongfooted Eduardo Camavinga and whipped a spectacular curling strike around Thibaut Courtois and in off the post.

It was the Argentine striker’s seventh goal in nine appearances in the competition this season.

But it was Diaz, another former Manchester City player, who claimed the decisive goal in an electric Madrid derby.

The Spaniard sent Atletico defender Jose Gimenez to the floor as he skilfully waltzed into the box before driving a low shot into the far corner in the 55th minute.

The 25-year-old midfielder had stepped up in Jude Bellingham’s absence, with the England international serving a one-game suspension after picking up his his third yellow card in the competition against Manchester City earlier this month.

Bellingham will be available for the defending European champions when they make the short trip to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano for the return on Wednesday, 12 March (20:00 GMT), with the winners likely to face Arsenal in the last eight after their 7-1 first-leg thrashing of PSV in Eindhoven.

Atletico midfielder Conor Gallagher told TNT Sports: “Real Madrid are a top team and I think we competed well. I think it was a decent performance.

“We would’ve liked to get a better result but it’s all to play for in the next leg. We feel we can beat any team and with our fans behind us, it helps, and we’ll be looking forward to it.”

Valverde said today: “Winning the derby would be very special, firstly because of the game it is. Every player, whether they are from Real Madrid or Atlético, always wants to win it, they wish, they dream of playing a game of this calibre!

“Both Atlético de Madrid and Barça are doing very well, but we are thinking about our own thing, about doing it in the best way.

“Winning would take us a big step forward in LaLiga, with everything that implies for the team in terms of morale.”

La Liga: Griezmann informs Atletico Madrid of exit decision

France international Antoine Griezmann has informed Atletico Madrid management he wants to leave at the end of the season.

While he still has 18 months to run on his current deal, Griezmann has told Atletico chiefs this will be his last season with the club, says OkDiario.

While Atletico may offer the veteran a free transfer, the striker would be happy if Atletico were to secure a transfer fee for his sale.

It is unlikely the 33 year-old Frenchman will move within Europe, with the MLS the most likely destination once he departs from Madrid.

However, Griezmann also hasn’t ruled out hanging up the boots this summer.

Atletico Madrid treatment left me in tears – Omorodion

Porto striker Samu Omorodion admits he never received an explanation from Atletico Madrid why they wanted to sell him in August.

Signed a year ago from Granada and immediately loaned to Alaves for the season, Omorodion never played a game for Atletico before being sold to Porto.

On Porto, he told Marca: “From the first minute I saw the interest they had in me. The president came to Madrid to sign me and he told me that he wouldn’t leave without signing me. That’s what a player needs, to be shown confidence. I want to thank the president and the club for the bet they have placed on me.

“There – at Atlético de Madrid – I trained separately. I didn’t feel involved, not like a footballer. I trained and my head told me no. I had a bad time. I cried a lot at night… my family and my mother had a very bad time… In the end, thank God, everything came together quickly and I made the best decision.

“Nobody spoke to me and I didn’t speak to anyone. I was still an Atlético de Madrid player, I had to go to training and do my job. I already knew the club’s position. These are things that happen in football and that make you gain experience and learn for the future.”

God didn’t want me to join Chelsea – Omorodion

Porto striker Samu Omorodion admits that he could have joined Chelsea in the summer.

The young forward signed for Porto from Atletico Madrid for a modest fee close to deadline day.

However, the Bleus had agreed a £34M transfer that included Conor Gallagher going to Atleti.

Instead, they backed out of the deal and signed Joao Felix to allow Gallagher to make the move.

“I had a very difficult summer,” he told Spanish outlet RTVE.

“We had a really bad time because in the end everyone knows that I was close to signing, but it’s true that if it didn’t happen, it was for a reason, because God didn’t want it.

“I’m also very grateful to Porto for giving me the opportunity when things looked at their worst, and I’m very happy with where I am now. I’ve left the past behind and now I’m focused on what’s coming to me.”

La Liga: Atletico Madrid reacts over derby suspension

La Liga side Atletico Madrid have released a statement after last night’s derby with Real Madrid.

The 1-1 draw was suspended for 20 minutes as fans threw objects onto the pitch and targeted visiting goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Atletico stated afterwards: “Atlético de Madrid wishes to express its rejection of the throwing of objects from part of the south end of the stands in the 68th minute of the match against Real Madrid. From the moment the objects were thrown, the club’s security department has been working with the police to locate those involved, one of whom has already been identified.

“The club will apply the internal regime provided for very serious cases to those involved in this incident.

“These attitudes have no place in football and tarnish the image of a stadium that has experienced a spectacular atmosphere with more than 70,000 spectators in its stands and the vast majority of whom have shown exemplary behaviour.”
