  • Breaking: Barcelona suffer massive home defeat to Betis

Spanish La Liga giants, Football Club Barcelona suffered a heavy massive defeat at home to Real Betis on Sunday in a match that saw midfield maestro, Ivan Rakitic sent off.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Real Betis have failed to win in their last 16 La Liga games at Camp Nou and have not won in the league against Barcelona for 10 years.

Barcelona got the action started after Luiz Suarez was awarded with La Liga’s Player of the Month award for October.

Betis continued to face a constant wave of Barcelona pressure in the early stages of the game as the visitors struggle to get out of their own penalty area, with Ernesto Valverde’s high press proving to be effective.

However, the first goal of the game went to Betis’s way from Junior Firpo.

The visitors hit on the counter as William Carvalho feeds a ball through the defence to Junior, who has no support but beats Sergi Roberto and shifts the ball onto his right foot before drilling a finish past Ter Stegen at the near post.

Leo Messi grew into the game as he skips through the midfield before being hauled back by Andres Guardado, who picks up the game’s first yellow card.

The free-kick was floated into the middle by Messi and Clement Lenglet lunges to volley an effort at goal.

Pau Lopez was equal to the effort though as he pushes the ball behind with a strong hand and the resulting corner came to nothing.

Suarez struggled to establish a foothold in the game as Real Betis did extremely well to limit his opportunities in possession.

Barcelona looked shellshocked by Betis’ style of play and continued to struggle.

The visitors were the side to find goal the second time.

Betis found space in the wide positions and again they make it count! Junior’s drilled cross goes all the way through and Cristian Tello pulls a pass back across goal where Joaquin provides a one-touch finish to double Betis’ advantage.

Real Betis looked unstoppable on the counter and looked like extending their lead in every attack.

Rakitic tried to snatch possession off Joaquin on the edge of Betis’ penalty area but instead conceded a foul, picking up a booking in the process.

Betis went into the second half with the two-goal advantage.

Barcelona was only able to pull one back with a penalty from Messi, who smashed the penalty into the top corner, giving Lopez no chance at minute 69.

However, Betis puts the game at 1:3 after a disastrous display from Ter Stegen.

Tello drags a ball back into the middle where Lo Celso strikes at goal but it is straight at the Germany international. However, he is unable to clutch onto possession and only palms the effort over his head and into the net.

Barcelona got back into fray at minute 79 as Messi played a killer pass through the defence to Munir, who unselfishly taps the ball across to Vidal, who tucks home into an empty net.

Rakitic got his marching order at minute 81 after he lunged in on Lo Celso in midfield and picks up a deserved yellow card, which sees the referee issuing the marching orders to the Croatia midfielder.

Betis unbelievably put a 4th past Barcelona after Junior finds space beyond Roberto and drills a superb ball into the middle where Canales is lurking, stabbing home easily just inside the six-yard box.

Barcelona pulls a controversial goal by the effort of Vidal, who found space inside the area and latches onto Suarez’s inviting pass through, then tapping the ball across for Messi to tuck home easily.

Real Betis pleaded for offside and, after a delay for a VAR check, the goal was awarded.

Defeat for Barcelona means they sit just one point ahead of Atletico Madrid, setting things up very nicely for their trip to the capital to tackle Diego Simeone’s side after the international break.

Meanwhile, Real Betis rise to 12th in the table and are now just a single point behind the top-seven and tackle Villarreal in two week’s time.

  • UEFA Super Cup winner fined for third-party deal

Atletico Madrid have been fined 45,900 euros for signing a player, who has not been named, on a deal that allowed third-party ownership.

Atletico have previously been banned from registering players for two transfer windows for breaching rules over the signing of minors.

The Europa League champions were also fined £439,873 at the time.

Atletico, who beat Real Madrid to win the European Supercup on Wednesday, must pay 52,000 Swiss Francs (45,900 euros, $52,170) for “entering into a contract that enabled a third party to influence the club’s independence in employment and transfer-related matters and entering incorrect information in the International Transfer Matching System,” a FIFA statement said.

The player in question was not named.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee also fined clubs in Qatar, Dubai and Iran for failing to obey its previous decisions as well as rulings by the Court of Arbitration for Sport to pay “significant overdue amounts of money to players.”

FIFA also threatened the clubs with points deductions and transfer bans.

The Qatar Sports Club was fined 30,000 Swiss francs and ordered to pay outstanding wages within 90 days or miss four transfer windows.

El Shamal of Qatar was fined 15,000 Swiss francs and ordered to pay in 30 days or miss one transfer window

Shabab Al Ahli of Dubai was fined 30,000 Swiss Francs, given 90 days to pay and threatened with a ban for two transfer windows.

  • Atletico’s Super Cup win vindicates my decision to stay – Griezmann

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann says his side’s 4-2 win over Real Madrid to win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday vindicates his decision to reject a move to FC Barcelona.

The France striker was close to joining double winners Barca for 100 million euros (89.5 million pounds) at the end of last season but chose to stay at Atletico.

He had announced the move to remain with Diego Simeone’s side in a televised documentary called “The Decision’’.

“I stayed because I could see they were building a great project here. I have confidence in this club and in Simeone, and today we saw that I was not wrong,” Griezmann told reporters after the Super Cup triumph in Tallinn.

“It was our first game back and we worked really hard and put in a huge effort and we have to continue like this because we are a great group.”

Griezmann played less than an hour of the game against Real until he was substituted for Angel Correa.

He admitted he was not yet at peak fitness since only recently returning to his club after helping France to win the World Cup.

“I was a little worn out because it was only my second game back,” Griezmann said.

The Frenchman’s fellow striker Diego Costa was named “Man of the Match’’ in the Super Cup for scoring Atletico’s first two goals and playing an influential role in extra-time.

It was in extra-time that strikes from Saul Niguez and Koke saw off Real.

Costa shared Griezmann’s enthusiasm about the team’s prospects for the coming season.

“Atletico continue to grow, not just on the pitch but off it too and you have to thank the people who run the club for bringing important players in and for keeping Griezmann,” he said.

“If we keep working so hard on and off the pitch we will continue to grow as we have in the last six years.”

  • Super Cup preview: Real Madrid prepare for first game without Ronaldo

Real Madrid will play their first competitive game without Cristiano Ronaldo when they take on city rivals Atletico Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup in Estonia, on Wednesday

New Real manager Julen Lopetegui takes charge of his first game since replacing Zinedine Zidane as manager.

Real have won just one of their past 10 La Liga meetings with Atletico.

However, the European champions beat Diego Simeone’s side in the Champions League in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Simeone remains suspended from the touchline after he was sent off in Atletico’s Europa League semi-final against Arsenal and was handed a four-match ban. He will be serving the third match of the suspension.

    Team news

Forward Vinicius Junior, an 18-year-old signing from Flamengo, could feature but defender Alvaro Odriozola, bought from Real Sociedad, will miss the game in Tallinn with a minor groin injury.

New Atletico signings Thomas Lemar, Rodri, Nikola Kalinic, Gelson Martins and Santiago Arias have all travelled to Estonia.

World Cup winners Antoine Griezmann and Lucas Hernandez are also expected to play.

    ‘We never feel beneath anyone’

Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui: “My first official game is a final. A match that Real Madrid have earned the right to play in once again.

“Atletico are a team we know well and it will be a local derby. It’s all set up to be a great match and a great final. They are a great team with great players, and a coach who has been there for years leading them in the right direction.

“It’ll be a tough game both physically and tactically. It’s a final and these two teams will bring the best out of each other. We’re focused on what we need to do to beat Atletico.”

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone: “The important thing is the emotion, the hope. This game could be decided on an emotional level.

“The arrival of good players guarantees good individuals but not a better team until we are all working in the same direction. Obviously our budgets are not the same. But in terms of motivation we never feel beneath anyone.

“In this match we will do everything we can to take the game where we want it.”

Europa Final: Marseille v Atletico Madrid match stats, team news

Marseille captain Dimitri Payet wants his side to “write their names” in the history books by beating Atletico Madrid in the Europa League final.

The French side reached their first European final since 2005, when they lost in the Uefa Cup to Valencia.

Spaniards Atletico won the competition in 2010 and 2012, and have lost in two Champions League finals since.

“We believe against Atletico because this season has shown that we are a real team,” said Payet.

The former West Ham midfielder set up both goals to inspire his side to victory over Red Bull Salzburg in the semi-finals, while Atletico edged past Premier League side Arsenal.

Payet added: “Those who won the Champions League in 1993 are still heroes because nobody else has done it since.

“We know how tough it is. Of course, that is an added source of motivation, and if we do win the final, our names will be written into the club’s history books forever.”

Atletico boss Diego Simeone is suspended for the match in Lyon after being sent to the stands against Arsenal, so assistant German Burgos will take charge of the team from the sidelines.

“It was the same thing against Arsenal, when German was in charge of the side,” said Simeone.

“I feel sad at not being there, but we have known each other for a lifetime and we understand football in the same way. I have confidence in him being in charge.”

Atletico have already assured themselves of a place in next season’s Champions League by finishing in the top four of La Liga, but Marseille, currently in the Europa League spot in Ligue 1 with one game remaining, would guarantee they join Atletico in Europe’s premier club competition by winning the final.

    Team News

Atletico defender Filipe Luis has been named in the squad after recovering from a broken ankle, while winger Vitolo is also available after a hamstring complaint.

Marseille manager Rudi Garcia is also expecting to have a full-strength squad at his disposal, despite concerns over Payet (thigh), Rolando (calf), Kostas Mitroglou (hamstring) and Bouna Sarr (dislocated shoulder).

    Match Facts

This will be the first meeting between Marseille and Atletico Madrid in European competition since 2008-09, when the Spaniards went unbeaten against them in the Champions League group stage (W1 D1).

Les Olympiens are aiming to be the first French team to win a major European competition since 1995-96, when Paris St-Germain beat Rapid Vienna in the Cup Winners’ Cup.

This will be Diego Simeone’s fourth major European final since taking charge at Atletico in 2011-12 – the Argentine has lost both of his Champions League finals, but did win his only previous Europa League final in 2011-12.

Since the start of the 2013-14 campaign, Spanish clubs have won seven of the possible eight Champions League and Europa League trophies combined, with Manchester United’s win in this competition last season being the only exception.

In games played away from their home ground – the Orange Velodrome – Marseille have kept just one clean sheet in 16 games in the Europa League.

Dimitri Payet has made seven assists in 11 appearances in the Europa League this term; the most of any player in the competition.

Antoine Griezmann has had a hand in more goals than any other Atletico Madrid player in European competition this season (10 – six goals and four assists), including a goal and an assist in their 2-1 aggregate win over Arsenal in the semi-finals.

No team has been shown more yellow cards (30) or red cards (3) than Marseille in this season’s Europa League.

Adeopoju who spoke to NAN in Lagos on the sidelines of the event said: “I am happy about the development.

“It is indeed happening at a time when Nigeria needed it most to develop our football and portray the nation in a very good light.

“Having played in the La liga as well, I think it is a great opportunity for the nation to have a good connection with the kind of development in Spanish football’’.

Also, Amaju Pinnick, the Nigeria Football Federation President, extolled the leadership of MultiChoice for another opportunity to support the development of football in Nigeria.

He said that the partnership which was struck back in 2016 had continued to yield pleasant results and that it would be a historic moment for Nigeria’s football.

Javier Del Rio, the La Liga delegate told NAN that the synergy between Nigeria’s football and the Spanish league was for the development of football at the grassroots.

He said that since the coming together of the two countries, great development had been achieved, adding that having Atletico Madrid to play in Nigeria was one of them.

“We at MultiChoice are undoubtedly the continent’s leader in the coverage of sports and we have repeatedly shown this not only by the exclusive content we broadcast, but also by the way we support sports in Nigeria.

“We have done well in putting the country on the global sports map through exciting initiatives like the GOtv MAX Cup and backing the friendly match between Nigeria and Atletico Madrid is just one way we intend to doing our job.

“With the FIFA 2018 World Cup around the corner, the friendly match would go a long way in helping the coach assess the readiness of his team,’’ Mabutho said.

  • Atletico v Marseille: Diego Simeone banned for Europa final

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has received a four-match Uefa ban and will be absent from the touchline when his side face Marseille in the Europa League final on 16 May.

Simeone was found guilty of insulting a match official during the first leg of Atletico’s semi-final at Arsenal.

The 48-year-old was sent to the stands after Sime Vrsaljko’s early red card.

He served the first match of his suspension as Atletico completed a 2-1 aggregate win on Thursday.

It is not the first time that the Argentine, who was also fined 10,000 euros (£8,800), has been in trouble.

In 2014, he was banned by the Spanish Football Federation for eight matches for his behaviour in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup.

He got a four-game punishment for tapping the fourth official on the back of the head after a heated exchange during Atletico’s 2-1 aggregate win over Real Madrid, and a further sanction for protesting, applauding a red card and not leaving the field.

In 2016, he was given a touchline ban for the final three La Liga games of the season after appearing to instruct a ball boy to throw a ball on to the pitch to disrupt a Malaga attack during an Atletico victory.

Uefa’s control, ethics and disciplinary board also fined the club 10,000 euros after fans threw objects on the pitch at Emirates Stadium.

  • BREAKING: Atletico Madrid defeat blunt Arsenal to reach Europa League final

BREAKING: Atletico Madrid defeat blunt Arsenal to reach Europa League final

Atletico Madrid has secured a place in the UEFA Europa League final after defeating Arsenal 2-1 on aggregate in a semi-final 2nd leg tie at Wanda Metropolitano stadium on Thursday.

Diego Costa who scored the only goal has put paid to Arsene Wenger’s hopes of ending his Arsenal reign with a trophy.

Atletico, who claimed a late draw in London despite having Sime Vrsaljko dismissed and Simeone sent from the touchline showed their game plan right from the start as they set up to counter, using the strength and pace of Costa and first-leg scorer Antoine Griezmann.

Wenger confirmed in April that his 22-year association with the club will conclude at the end of the season and the players’ bid to see him sign off with a first European trophy ultimately came up short against Diego Simeone’s characteristically shrewd Atletico, for whom Diego Costa netted the decisive goal.

Arsenal’s luck appeared to be out early on as they lost captain Laurent Koscielny to injury, with the France international now a potential doubt for the World Cup as a result.

While Atletico continued to craft chances in the second half, there was a hint of tension in the stands – from where the banned Simeone watched on – that was transferred to the players and gave Arsenal encouragement.

But the visitors, still facing a battle just to claim a top-six spot in the Premier League, were simply incapable of breaking through Atletico’s exceptionally well-drilled defence as the home side dug deep to hold off Arsenal’s late onslaught, booking passage to the final in Lyon on May 16.

  • Five flash points ahead of Arsenal, Atletico Madrid Europa clash

Five flash points ahead of Arsenal, Atletico Madrid Europa clash

Atletico held on for a 1-1 draw in the opening game in London last week and Diego Simeone’s side are heavy favourites to make the final in Lyon later this month.

Here are five flash points ahead of the clash in Wanda Metropolitano stadium:

Wenger braced for last Arsenal game in Europe

If Wenger had been able to handpick the setting for potentially his last European match in charge of Arsenal, Atletico’s Wanda Metropolitano would likely have been low down the list.

To avoid defeat, his team will have to deliver the sort of break-out display they have managed in the FA Cup in recent years, against Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea.

Wenger got closest to a European trophy in 2006 when his side were beaten in the Champions League final by Barcelona and in 2000, when they lost in the UEFA Cup final to Galatasaray. A glorious farewell is still within reach.

    Atletico impenetrable at home

Atletico are unbeaten at home in La Liga this term and have not conceded a single goal on their own patch since January.

The success of Simeone’s side has been based on work rate and discipline but Arsenal can draw encouragement from last week’s opening leg, when they created several excellent chances.

The key in Madrid is likely to be patient. Over-exert, and Arsenal may leave themselves open to Atletico’s all-too familiar combination of absorb and counter.

But it will take a certain level of attacking intent to break down arguably Europe’s most resilient defence. Arsenal must find the perfect balance.

    Lacazette to prove his worth

With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cup-tied, Alexandre Lacazette is again expected to start up front for Arsenal and the Frenchman will have to be more clinical than he was in the first leg.

Lacazette scored the opener but missed a number of chances to give his team the lead and he has particular motivation against Atletico, who tried to sign him last year before their transfer ban kicked in.

“He is a fantastic player with great speed and movement,” Simeone said. “What distinguishes him most is his speed of execution in the final third.”

    Costa back for Atleti

Diego Costa missed the opener in London with a hamstring strain but the striker is expected back, having come through Sunday’s win over Alaves unscathed. The striker’s return is a huge boost for Atletico.

Costa’s tenacity will be well-known to Arsenal but he also brings the best out of partner Antoine Griezmann, who has enjoyed a sharp upturn in form since the Spaniard joined in January.

If Costa can martial Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi, Atletico will hope Griezmann can capitalise on the extra space.

    Simeone constrained to the stands

Simeone is never one to hold back on the touchline, often celebrating tackles and blocks just as enthusiastically as a goal. He overstepped the mark, however, last week and was sent off, meaning he will have to watch from the stands in the second leg.

Atletico will certainly miss their coach and motivator on the line. It remains to be seen how much. “The stadium must know we need them, we need them to live the game like our coach lives it,” captain Diego Godin said. “That will help us a great deal.”

  • Wasteful Gunners concede late equaliser with 10-man Atletico, Marseille one leg in to finals

Antoine Griezmann punished Arsenal’s lax defence late on as 10-man Atletico Madrid’s rearguard action salvaged a draw from the Europa League semi-final first leg at the Emirates.

The visitors were on the back foot for almost the entire game after defender Sime Vrsaljko was dismissed for two yellow cards in the first 10 minutes.

Their defence survived unscathed to half-time with Alexandre Lacazette clipping the post with a half-volley in the hosts’ best chance.

Lacazette nodded in Jack Wilshere’s cross just after the hour to apparently edge the Gunners closer to a Europa League final send-off for outgoing manager Arsene Wenger.

But with eight minutes remaining Griezmann latched onto a long ball forward, shrugged off Laurent Koscielny and stabbed into the net at the second attempt to swing the momentum Atletico’s way.

Dimitri Payet set up both goals as Marseille beat Austria’s RB Salzburg 2-0 in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final at Stade Velodrome.

The Ligue 1 side have won eight of their nine games at home in this season’s competition.

Florian Thauvin headed their opener from ex-West Ham forward Payet’s free-kick and Cameron winger Clinton Njie doubled the lead from a Payet pass.

Fredrik Gulbrandsen hit the post for the Austrian Bundesliga leaders.
