La Liga: Felix’s lone goal rescues wasteful Barcelona against Atletico Madrid

FC Barcelona secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in a tense La Liga encounter, all thanks to loanee, Joao Felix.

Felix’s goal was the ultimate decider that now puts Barcelona within four points of league leaders Real Madrid.

Recall that Felix is on loan from Atletico. He left the club in September, amidst controversies surrounding his stay and playtime.

Meanwhile, his excellent chip secured the only goal of the match.

In the second half, Atletico attempted to mount a comeback, but Barcelona’s defense deterred them.

Barcelona’s Raphinha hit the post, and substitute Memphis Depay faced a huge save from a free-kick.

Atletico’s Angel Correa also tested Barcelona’s goalkeeper, Inaki Pena, who made a crucial stop.

The win by Xavi Hernandez side put them in a promising position in the La Liga title race.

Griezmann, Morata grab brace as Atletico thrash 10-man Celtic

Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata both struck twice to help thrash 10-man Celtic 6-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, sending the Spaniards top in Group E.

Atletico made a strong start and Griezmann opened the scoring in the sixth minute, slotting in a low shot from the edge of the box.

Celtic were then reduced to 10 men when forward Daizen Maeda received a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Atletico defender Mario Hermoso in the 23rd minute.

Some fine saves from Celtic’s veteran goalkeeper Joe Hart from close-range efforts kept them in the game and the visitors almost found a shock equaliser in the 28th minute.

Atletico keeper Jan Oblak made a stunning one-handed save to deny what would have been a comical own-goal by Morata as he attempted to clear a corner from inside Atletico’s six-yard box.

Morata made amends in added time before the break, when Griezmann found Jose Maria Gimenez with a brilliant cross from the right touchline to the far corner and he headed it to the Spain captain to tap in.

Player of the match Griezmann than scored the third with an acrobatic volley in the 60th minute and substitute Samuel Lino netted the fourth with a fine curling strike into the top left corner six minutes later.

Morata blasted home an unstoppable strike from a rebound in the 76th minute and Saul Niguez wrapped up the scoring from close-range in the 85th.

“Sure, the red card gave us an advantage, but we had started the game on top, scored early, something that we were having difficulties doing lately,” Griezmann told Movistar Plus.

“We need to continue like this. With respect to our opponents, we tried to play as well as we could, score as many goals as we could and not do anything stupid or disrespectful.”

Atletico went top in Group E on eight points with two games remaining, one point ahead of second-placed Lazio who beat Feyenoord 1-0 on Tuesday.

EPL: De Gea, Manchester United part ways 12 years after joining from Atletico Madrid

Spanish goalkeeper, David De Gea has reign as Manchester United goalkeeper after 12 years of manning the goalpost for the Red Devils.

Both De Gea and Manchester United failed to reach an agreement on a new contract for the Spaniard.

De Gea revealed his exit on social media, writing: “I just wanted to send this farewell message to all Manchester United supporters.

The Spaniard posted on Instagram: “I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years. We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. I took incredible pride every time I pulled on this shirt.

“It’s been an unforgettable and successful period since I came here. I didn’t think from leaving Madrid as a young boy we would achieve what we did together.

“Now, it’s the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings.

“Manchester will always be in my heart, Manchester has shaped me and will never leave me.

    “We’ve seen it all. ??❤️”

De Gea joined Man Utd from Atletico Madrid in 2011, making 545 appearances for the club. The Spain international broke Peter Schmeichel’s club clean sheets record while at the club in the 2022/23 season, during which he also won the Premier League Golden Glove.

However, the goalkeeper is yet to reveal his next destination but there are report he could be joining a club in the Saudi Pro League.

Barca edge closer to 27th La Liga title

FC Barcelona forward Ferran Torres struck late in the first half to secure a 1-0 victory over third-placed Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday.

The home side tightened their grip on top spot and moved a step closer to their 27th La Liga title.

With eight games remaining, FC Barcelona moved to 76 points and extended their lead to 11 points over second-placed Real Madrid, while Atletico remained third on 60 points.

FC Barcelona ended Atletico’s 13-game unbeaten league run thanks to a goal on the counter in the 44th minute and a fine performance by Marc Andre ter Stegen who made spectacular reflex saves from point-blank strikes by Antoine Griezmann, one in each half.

“The team worked well, the fans supported us and we won, that’s what matters.

“This victory gives us a lot of confidence going forward. Atletico were on a good run and in good shape, so that makes this win even more important for us,” Torres told reporters.

FC Barcelona, who had struggled in their last three matches in all competitions without scoring, were dominated by Atletico early in the game.

The visitors, who were on a six-game winning streak, sent the first warning early as Griezmann took advantage of poor control by Sergio Busquets on the edge of the area and unleashed an angled shot that crashed against the crossbar.

However, FC Barcelona gradually became more aggressive and took control of the game, with striker Robert Lewandowski wasting two great chances midway through the first half.

Just as FC Barcelona looked in full control, Atletico almost scored on a counter-attack led by Yannick Carrasco who ran down the left and put in a low cross for Griezmann, whose close-range strike was brilliantly stopped by Ter Stegen.

FC Barcelona got the winner when Raphinha controlled a long ball down the right channel and crossed to the edge of the area where Torres calmly slotted past goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

It was an entertaining match after the break with both teams missing several chances, including another outstanding save by Ter Stegen from a Griezmann strike and a sitter missed by Lewandowski when he was one-on-one with Oblak.

  • Transfer: Chelsea sign Joao Felix from La Liga club

Transfer: Chelsea sign Joao Felix from La Liga club

Chelsea have signed Portugal forward Joao Felix from La Liga side Atletico Madrid on a loan deal until the end of the season, both clubs said on Wednesday.

British media reported that Chelsea would pay around 10 million euros (10.75 million dollars) for Felix.

The 23-year-old has struggled for consistency this season and started seven of Atletico Madrid’s 16 league games. He has five goals and three assists in 20 games in all competitions.

Felix scored once in five FIFA World Cup appearances as Portugal exited at the quarter-final stage in Qatar in December.

He started in Atletico Madrid’s 0-1 home loss to LaLiga leaders FC Barcelona on Sunday and was substituted after 73 minutes.

“Chelsea is one of the great teams in the world and I hope to help the team reach their objectives.

”So, I am very, very happy to be here and very excited to play at Stamford Bridge,” Felix said in a statement released by the English clubside.

Felix became the fourth most expensive player of all time when he joined Atletico Madrid for 126 million euros from Benfica in 2019 as a teenager.

A versatile forward, Felix can play as a striker, attacking midfielder or on the flanks.

But he has struggled to live up to his price tag since moving to Spain.

He has scored 34 goals in 131 appearances for Atletico Madrid and won the 2020/2021 league title.

Chelsea have already been active in the January transfer window, bringing in Benoit Badiashile, David Fofana and Andrey Santos .

Felix will further bolster their injury-hit squad as well as strengthen their options in attack, with Raheem Sterling, Christian Pulisic and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all sidelined.

Graham Potter’s side have scored only 20 goals in 17 Premier League games so far and sit 10th, 10 points off the top four.

Chelsea have lost five of their last seven games in all competitions and have been knocked out of the FA Cup and League Cup.

They return to action at Fulham in the league on Thursday.

  • Atletico Madrid axe Joao Felix from squad

Atletico Madrid axe Joao Felix from squad

La Liga side Atletico Madrid has axed Portuguese forward Joao Felix from its squad for their Copa del Rey game against Oviedo.

There is speculation about the future of Felix this winter, with the attacker linked with a move away from the club.

Felix, who impressed at the World Cup with Portugal, is not getting along with Atleti coach Diego Simeone.

However, reports in Spain and England this week have indicated that a move is very difficult at present.

While the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal retain an interest, Atleti want a significant loan fee or a massive transfer fee to part with Felix.

Unless a club makes a mega offer, he appears likely to remain at Atleti until the summer.

  • Man Utd made €135m offer for Atletico Madrid attacker

Man Utd made €135m offer for Atletico Madrid attacker

Premier League club Manchester United made a massive offer for Atletico Madrid attacker Joao Felix earlier this summer.

Marca says the Spanish side turned down a €135m bid for Felix from United back in late July.

When CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin was informed of the offer, he didn’t hesitate in turning it down even though it’s more than the 127.2 million the club paid to sign Felix from Benfica back in the summer of 2019.

The CEO’s faith in Felix hasn’t wavered since he travelled to Lisbon to sign him back in 2019, as Gil is convinced he will become one of the best footballers in the world.

The bid reportedly came on July 31, the day after Atletico and United faced off in Oslo. Felix netted the winner that day, with the player aware that the Red Devils had taken a particular interest in him.
