  • Why Tuchel signed Chelsea flop from Atletico Madrid

Why Tuchel signed Chelsea flop from Atletico Madrid

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was never keen on taking Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez on-loan this season.

The Blues completed a deadline day swoop for the former Atletico Madrid midfielder – signing him on loan with an option to make the deal permanent next summer.

However, Cadena SER says Tuchel only signed the 26-year-old for £4million as a “favour” to his representatives.

Saul has failed to make an impact since moving to Chelsea – having only featured five times for Tuchel’s side since making his debut against Aston Villa on September 11.

He was hooked at half-time during that encounter and didn’t feature in their next five Premier League outings before making a short cameo in a 3-0 win at Newcastle on October 30.

  • I wanted to leave Liverpool for Arsenal – Suarez

I wanted to leave Liverpool for Arsenal – Suarez

Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez admits he wanted to leave Liverpool for Arsenal in 2013.

Brendan Rodgers arrived during that summer who, alongside captain Steven Gerrard, convinced him to stay as Liverpool.

He explained to UEFA’s official website: “I think I’d been at Liverpool for a year and a half when Brendan took charge in July 2012.

“Back then, I had opportunities to sign for other clubs who were getting in contact with me, but he phoned me when I was in Uruguay on holiday, to tell me that he had another way of thinking, that he wanted to change the club and its philosophy, that he wanted the club to get back in the Champions League and fight to win big trophies, that he was going to make the team play great football.

“He asked me to believe and trust him. I enjoyed that chat. I liked his conviction, the philosophy he wanted to implement at the club, so I talked to my agent and the club to say that I didn’t want to leave, that I wanted another opportunity to be successful at Liverpool.

“That year wasn’t as good as we wanted, but ideas were already pretty clear. So then the 2012/13 season goes by, and I wanted to sign for Arsenal, since Arsenal had played in the Champions League every season prior to that.”

He added: “I had some further discussions with the coach, as well as with Gerrard. He was the one that convinced me. I told him I wanted to keep being successful, that I wanted to play in the Champions League.

“So, he said to me, ‘If this year we keep improving as we have been, and you’re at the level you have to be, next year you’ll be able to play for Bayern München, Real Madrid, Barcelona, or whatever club you like. You’ll have the chance to choose, but stay for one more year’.

“I remember that talk with Gerrard, and I remember everything the coach said to me. He texted me things like, ‘Stay for another year, just try it.’ And, well, that was the year we were close to winning the Premier League. That’s thanks to the team efforts, obviously, but especially to the philosophy and conviction Brendan Rodgers conveyed to us as the coach.”

  • I still don’t know who wanted me out at Barca – Suarez

I still don’t know who wanted me out at Barca – Suarez

Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez has revisited his bitter split from La Liga giant Barcelona 18 months ago.

The former Barca star admits the way he was treated still burns.

He recalled to ESPN: “I regret the way it turned out. As I explained, if you have a player who has been at the club for ten years, the third top scorer, the president, or the coach, could have warned me. We could have met one day to have the situation explained to me. It would have been better, it would have been totally different.

“But a week before, the media had already announced: ‘They will tell Luis Suárez when he leaves’. Suárez this, Suárez that. So I already knew that. And when the coach called me to tell me that I was no longer in his plans, it hurt me.

“I tried to terminate my contract, because the club didn’t want me anymore and I was at an age where no one wanted to pay for me. Everything was ready for the termination of the contract and I was going to sign with Atlético. And the coach said: ‘I have already told the president that if he does not make up his mind tomorrow, Sunday, against Villarreal, I am counting on you’. I said, ‘How can you count on me if I wasn’t in your plans?’ (And he replied) ‘You weren’t, but now you are’.

“I did not understand if I was not in the plans of the coach, or if it was the board of directors who did not want me anymore.”

Suarez would eventually leave for Atletico and subsequently help them win last season’s LaLiga title.

He said: “At the end of the season, I distinguished myself with Atlético, scoring the winning goal and winning the Spanish championship. This is priceless, I thank Atlético for having opened its doors to me.”

  • We tried to sign Messi at Atletico Madrid – Simeone

We tried to sign Messi at Atletico Madrid – Simeone

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has admitted they tried signing Leo Messi as he left Barcelona for PSG in August.

It was always going to be a long shot, but El Cholo had to find out if a dream collaboration with his compatriot might be a possibility. Los Colchoneros’ middle-man in the short-lived operation was none other than Luis Suarez, a close friend of Messi’s.

“I’ll tell you something, when all that happened at Barcelona, we called Luis [Suarez] with nothing but respect,” Simeone told Ole magazine.

“I didn’t call Leo [Messi], but I did call Luis and I asked him about how [Messi] was, what he was thinking if there was the slightest, hypothetical chance that he might come to Atletico Madrid.

“But that lasted all of three hours. Paris Saint-Germain were clearly obsessed with bringing him in.”

  • Weird facing Barca without Messi – Suarez

Weird facing Barca without Messi – Suarez

Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez admits he’ll find it “weird” facing Barcelona without Lionel Messi.

Suarez faces his old club this weekend.

He said, “Weird to face Barca without Messi?

“Yes, at the moment, yes. Last year it was strange for me to go back to Camp Nou and have him there, because of what we talked about. Now it will be strange not to see him in the FC Barcelona shirt.

“But things happen for a reason and today he is in Paris and I am at Atlético, and a year ago we were together in Barcelona.”

  • Barcelona despised me – Luis Suarez

Barcelona despised me – Luis Suarez

Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez has taken aim at former club Barcelona ahead of their weekend LaLiga clash.

The Uruguayan striker signed for Los Rojiblancos ahead of the 2020/21 campaign and led Diego Simeone’s side all the way to the LaLiga Santander title for the first time since 2013/14.

“Yes [I believe in karma],” Suarez told TVE1.

“Karma, destiny, that they despise you, because I have not forgotten that last year in pre-season [Barcelona] sent me to train on my own to make me angry, and I was a professional [despite that], as the coach said.

“I was a professional and I would train every day without pouting because that is what I have to do, because I am like that and fate will have its own end.”

Suarez went on to stress that he has been a leader at every club where he has featured in Europe and made clear that his Golden Boots are more valuable than any individual award were people are asked to vote on.

“I like it, I like to assume that responsibility,” added Suarez.

“[I am a player] who has fought a lot to be in the football elite because I have earned it the tough way, statistically.

“For me it’s not about an individual award that they want to give me by voting.

“I’ve always said it: I won two Golden Boots in the era of Cristiano [Ronaldo] and Leo [Messi] and I have to be proud because I beat them in terms of numbers, not because people voted for me, and that has a lot of value.

“I assumed responsibility at Barcelona when Leo was not there. We played against [Real] Madrid and I scored three goals without Leo.

“At Liverpool there were similar occasions when [Steven] Gerrard, who was the benchmark, a legend for us, was not there.

“At Ajax I was captain aged 21 or 22 years old. I have had to experience situations which I value very much.

“I have to be proud, and I came to a club like Atletico with many people believing that I was already, in quotation marks, on the descent.

“It was a demonstration of ambition, not to get bored with winning, of wanting this club to continue growing and, well, last year we’ve had was something unique.

“I am assuming the responsibility of the Suarez zone, as the coach said, but [also] enjoying that responsibility because it is nice to live with that pressure.”

  • La Liga: Alaves end Atletico Madrid’s unbeaten start

La Liga: Alaves end Atletico Madrid’s unbeaten start

Atletico Madrid missed the chance to move top of La Liga after suffering their first league defeat of the season at Alaves.

Alaves, who had lost their first five games of the campaign, took an early lead through Victor Laguardia’s header.

Laguardia came to the hosts’ rescue in the second half when he cleared Rodrigo de Paul’s cross-shot off the line.

Mamadou Loum should have doubled the hosts’ lead on the hour but fired over the bar from a good position.

Atletico increased the pressure towards the end of the second half and went close to an equaliser through Angel Correa, whose shot from a tight angle was saved by Alaves goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco.

Diego Simeone’s side wanted a penalty in second-half stoppage time after the ball appeared to strike the arm of an Alaves defender, but the referee dismissed the visitors’ appeals.

The defeat leaves Atleti two points behind leaders Real Madrid, who play their game in hand at home to Villarreal later on Saturday.

  • Atletico Madrid vs Bilbao: Felix sees red, Griezmann struggles again in goalless draw

Atletico Madrid vs Bilbao: Felix sees red, Griezmann struggles again in goalless draw

Joao Felix was sent off and Antoine Griezmann failed to fire again as Atletico Madrid were held to a goalless draw by Athletic Bilbao in a bad-tempered contest on Saturday.

Griezmann started ahead of Luis Suarez but was replaced by the Uruguayan after 55 minutes at the Wanda Metropolitano without registering a shot on target.

Felix came on too as Atletico chased a winner, only to be shown a second yellow card for dissent, the 21-year-old lashing the ball into the crowd in frustration.

The ball hit an Atletico supporter, who did not appear seriously hurt but left the stadium.

The stalemate is Atletico’s second in four days after Wednesday’s draw at home to Porto in the Champions League, suggesting Diego Simeone is still to find a formula that makes best use of his wealth of attacking options.

La Liga’s reigning champions have now drawn two and won three of their opening five games while Athletic continue their impressive start under Marcelino Garcia Toral, whose side also drew with Barcelona last month.

They have nine points, two fewer than their opponents.

Atletico were raging at referee Jesus Gil in the latter stages and after the final whistle, a cluster of players picking up yellow cards for their protests.

Felix has cut a frustrated figure this year, unable to justify his 126-million-euro price tag, while Griezmann has made three appearances since his return from Barcelona but is yet to make an impression.

The Frenchman was whistled in midweek by his own fans and while the reception was slightly warmer this time, he gave little for the Atletico supporters to cheer about.

Griezmann went closest after 57 seconds, when he darted to the front post but his shot flew over, and then he controlled another cross shortly after but was unable to put power into the finish.

Inaki Williams volleyed over shortly before half-time and then had the best chance of the match to put Athletic in front, stealing the ball away from Jose Gimenez and racing clear. With only Jan Oblak to beat, Williams sidefooted wide.

Simeone introduced Suarez, Yannick Carrasco, Hector Herrera and Felix around the hour and Carrasco released Suarez but he got the ball stuck under his feet.

When Marcos Llorente crashed a shot against the post, Atletico had a headwind behind them, only for Felix to boil over.

The Portuguese had his shirt pulled back by Unai Vencedor but the free-kick went Athletic’s way, much to the dismay of Felix. He shouted at the referee, tapped his finger against his temple and watched a second yellow card go up.

Athletic should have won it late on but Asier Villalibre blazed high with only Oblak to beat.

Atletico were fuming when Gil blew for the final whistle with Carrasco sent clear, but the six minutes of stoppage time were up.

Former Atleti striker Radamel Falcao had earlier rolled back the years in a dream debut for Rayo Vallecano as the 35-year-old scored in a 3-0 victory over Getafe.

Falcao came off the bench for Randy Nteka in the 71st minute and scored in the 82nd before saluting the ecstatic home fans at Vallecas.

The Colombian latched on to a through ball into the right channel from Pathe Ciss and fired a sizzling shot past David Soria and into the far corner.

Falcao has returned to Spain eight years after he joined Monaco from Atletico Madrid, where he became one of the world’s deadliest strikers and won the Europa League, as well as the Copa del Rey.

But injuries have curtailed his form since and after scoring 19 goals in 34 league games for Galatasaray across two stop-start seasons, he was released, allowing Rayo to make their move.

Rayo are back in Spain’s top flight after being promoted last term and have made an encouraging start, their win over Getafe giving them seven points from their first five games.

  • La Liga: Lemar grabs 99th-minute winner for Atletico Madrid

La Liga: Lemar grabs 99th-minute winner for Atletico Madrid

Thomas Lemar scored a dramatic injury-time winner as La Liga champions Atletico Madrid came from behind to beat newly promoted Espanyol.

The France midfielder scored in the 99th minute to give Diego Simeone’s side a third victory from their opening four games.

The hosts led from the 40th minute through a Raul de Tomas looping header.

Yannick Carrasco levelled for Atletico 11 minutes from time with a brilliant solo goal before Lemar’s late winner.

The 25-year-old latched onto Carrasco’s flick before unleashing a shot that the weak hand of Diego Lopez was unable to keep out.

It was an underwhelming Atletico return for striker Antoine Griezmann, who was replaced by Joao Felix in the 58th minute.

Espanyol are still searching for their first victory since returning to Spain’s top flight, while unbeaten Atletico went top with 10 points from a possible 12. However, they can be overtaken by city rivals Real Madrid who face Celta Vigo

  • Why I approved Griezmann exit from Barca – Koeman

Why I approved Griezmann exit from Barca – Koeman

Barcelona head coach, Ronald Koeman has revealed why he approved the loan move of France international Antoine Griezmann to Atletico Madrid, TheNewsGuru reports.

The World Cup winner left the La Liga giant on transfer deadline day.

Koeman remarked: “It’s true, but you have to listen to the club and support it at a delicate time in terms of money. Griezmann is a Barca player with a very high contract and for the club it was very, very, very important to let him return to Atlético and not pay more for a three-year contract. And you, as a coach, say you want to help the club, but you need another striker.

“Antoine’s position is difficult for us to cover, but above all to help the club financially, it was important for him to leave.

“I was not adamant in that sense, because I could have said, ‘No, he won’t move from here’. Yes, it was the same for Griezmann, but with the aggravating circumstance that it happened on the last day, with hardly any time to find a solution. It was a shame. Griezmann had a big contract and if he left he was going to help improve the club’s economic situation. That’s why I accepted his departure.”
