Chelsea approach La Liga club for €80m midfielder

Premier League club Chelsea have jumped into the race for Atletico Madrid for midfielder Saul Niguez.

Mundo Deportivo says Chelsea have made an approach to Atletico Madrid for Saul.

The Spanish international was previously a target for Manchester United, but it seems the Blues are looking to swoop in ahead of their Premier League rivals.

Chelsea have already been in touch with Atleti over the prospect of signing the 26-year-old, who is valued at around €80million.

Saul was linked with Bayern Munich last week, which forced the German giants to deny the claims.

The midfielder is ready to leave Atletico this summer after losing his first-choice status last season

La Liga title now in our hands – Suarez

Atletico Madrid ace Luis Suarez was proud to prove the matchwinner for victory over Osasuna on Sunday.

The veteran striker scored perhaps the most important goal of Atletico’s campaign so far to complete the comeback against Osasuna on Sunday. Los Rojiblancos had fallen behind in the encounter, with Real Madrid going above them in the table until Suarez’s strike two minutes from time.

“I don’t think we deserved to suffer as much as we ended up doing because we had one of our best halves of the season,” Suarez said at full time.

“We missed lots of chances, including me.

“We have to get used to suffering in order to win LaLiga and that’s what happened today.

“Everyone says that [suffering] is Atletico’s thing. I didn’t think there was as much [suffering] as this!

“But anyway, the effort, the sacrifice that this team is making… there are lots of people working to achieve our goals.

“Now it’s time to enjoy it, stay calm and prepare in the week ahead.”

Suarez’s goal arrived after, as he mentioned, he missed a great chance in the first half, with his effort only hitting the post from close range.

“Sometimes, as a striker, it’s easier to let your head drop and to get yourself down, but that’s never been me,” Suarez admitted.

“I’m happy and proud of that. If you fight, you never give up and you can achieve an objective like today.”

Atletico take on Real Valladolid at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla knowing that a win will seal the title.

“It’s in our hands,” Suarez added.

“It’s the most important game of the season. We’ve had many, but this is so important in achieving our goal.”

I’m hearing Inter Milan striker joining Atletico Madrid – Vieri

Former Italy striker Christian Vieri is backing Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez for a move to Atletico Madrid.

Vieri is a former Atletico and Inter star.

He said, “I throw the bomb: Lautaro Martínez will go to Atlético de Madrid. They say it’s done. Well paid, they say.”

Lautaro has a deal to 2023 with Inter, but his future with Inter is again in doubt after a blow-up with coach Antonio Conte at the end of victory over Roma.

At Atletico, Lautaro would find fellow Argentine Diego Simeone, who is a big fan of the striker.

Premier League club make sensational move for Luis Suarez

Premier League club Liverpool have made a sensational move for Atletico Madrid ace Luis Suarez.

Cuatro says Liverpool have an offer on the table to re-sign Suarez this summer.

Both the Reds and Inter Miami are trying to tempt the forward away from Atletico Madrid following his sensational season in La Liga.

The Uruguayan has scored 19 goals from 26 league appearances this season to help Atleti challenge for the title, but has no clause in his contract to prevent him moving on at the end of the season.

While he is happy to stay put with Diego Simeone’s men, that hasn’t put Liverpool off sounding out the forward about replacing Mohamed Salah should he leave.

Luis Suarez injury a heavy title blow – Simeone

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has admitted they may find it difficult to cope without t Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan striker will be missing through injury for a couple of weeks, starting with Sunday’s trip to play Real Betis in LaLiga Santander.

“You can coach [players to finish], yes,” Simeone said.

“We’re focused on trying to improve that, but that’s why we have players that score 25 to 30 goals [a season] and those that score five.

“That’s the difference between some players and other players.

“We’re without an important player in Luis.

“We have players like [Angel] Correa who are eager to prove themselves. With Joao [Felix], I reckon that, like against Chelsea, he’ll be important from this point onwards.

“I always look at the positives of the team and have trust in my players.

“We’ve come on a great deal since last season [in terms of scoring goals], especially in LaLiga.”

I still follow Barca, speak to Messi everyday – Suarez

Atletico Madrid ace Luis Suarez admits he still follows the results of former club Barcelona closely.

Barca, after their 6-1 win at Real Sociedad, are now four points behind LaLiga leaders Atletico.

On the Barca win, Suarez said on a Twitch stream: “Yes, a great game, it was spectacular. When a team is in positive dynamics and has the best in the world, it shows. When you see that the rival suffers everywhere on the pitch, you realise that they were going to win. When you admire football, you see that game, how they have fun…

“Yes (I follow Barca), because I like to watch football and I have friends there. I have admiration for the team I defended and I will be grateful. I talk to Messi almost daily, but we talk about many things and sometimes about matches, but also about personal things.”

  • UCL: Tuchel sets Chelsea record in Atletico Madrid win

UCL: Tuchel sets Chelsea record in Atletico Madrid win

Thomas Tuchel has set a record for the longest ever unbeaten start by a Chelsea manager as he reached 13 straight matches without defeat to open his Blues tenure on Wednesday.

That run has eclipsed previous Chelsea record-holder Luiz Felipe Scolari, who went 12 games unbeaten in 2008 to start his tenure at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues held a 1-0 away lead heading into the clash at Stamford Bridge.

Despite dominating possession, the Blues could have gone behind had Yannick Carrasco been awarded a penalty after Cesar Azpilicueta grabbed him in the box.

But Thomas Tuchel’s side all but to the tie to bed after 34 minutes when Hakim Ziyech stroked home the opener.

Kai Havertz capitalised on the counter to feed a galloping Timo Werner, with the German squaring an inch-perfect pass to Ziyech, whose shot could have been saved by Jan Oblak.

The goal meant Atleti needed to score three goals to win the tie, and Diego Simeone’s men never looked like climbing the mountain.

To compound matters, Stefan Savic was shown a soft red-card with nine minutes remaining after elbowing Antonio Rudiger.

The German made the most of the contact by collapsing on the ground, which ultimately got Savic sent off.

Emerson Palmieri put the cherry on top deep into stoppage time with a beautiful left-footed strike.

The Blues will learn their next opponent on Friday, while Atleti head back to Spain to mull what could have been.

Atletico Madrid star fires warning at Chelsea

Atletico Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente says they’re up for their Champions League clash with Chelsea.

Without the suspended Mason Mount and Jorginho, Chelsea will be robbed of two players who have been key to Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten start in the job.

And Llorente has warned Atletico are gearing up for another famous win against Premier League opposition.

“The team is eager, psyched up, aware of the game ahead,” he told Marca, with Chelsea leading the round 16 tie 1-0 on aggregate. “It is crucial, we are working well and a good game will come out.

“From within we trust ourselves. We have played great games this season. We have very clear ideas and we really want it to come.

“We have played big games when things get ugly. We have to remember what we did to Liverpool, that we are capable of it. We are sure to go for it all and get the victory.”

  • Benzema secures point for Real in Madrid derby

Benzema secures point for Real in Madrid derby

Karim Benzema scored a late equaliser as Real Madrid prevented city rivals Atletico Madrid from moving five points clear at the top of La Liga.

France striker Benzema was earlier denied several times by keeper Jan Oblak at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Luis Suarez scored the opener, which Kieran Trippier helped create on his return from a 10-week ban for betting.

Atletico are three points clear of Barcelona and five ahead of third-placed Real.

England right-back Trippier, who was suspended in December and fined £70,000 after a Football Association panel found he broke betting rules, was bright throughout for the hosts.

He started the move for Atletico’s goal, finding Marcos Llorente with a clever pass from defence.

A fine first touch from the Spanish midfielder helped him race clear before he slid the ball to Suarez, who beat Thibaut Courtois with a well-placed shot with the outside of his boot.

Real were denied a penalty for handball before the break, with referee Alejandro Hernandez watching several replays before deciding against awarding a spot-kick after the ball appeared to strike Felipe’s arm.

Courtois made a string of crucial saves after the break, denying Yannick Carrasco and twice keeping Suarez out.

At the other end Oblak made an excellent double save from Benzema with 10 minutes remaining, but Benzema could not be denied the equaliser after neatly exchanging passes with Casemiro in the penalty area.

  • Giroud stunner gives Chelsea win over Atletico Madrid

Giroud stunner gives Chelsea win over Atletico Madrid

Olivier Giroud’s spectacular overhead kick gave Chelsea an outstanding victory against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last 16 first leg in Bucharest.

Giroud’s superb moment of improvisation not only delivered the win and a vital away goal but also continued new manager Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten start at Chelsea and put them in pole position to reach the quarter-finals.

In a tie played in Romania instead of Spain because of Covid-19 restrictions, Giroud demonstrated athleticism and technique to send an acrobatic effort beyond Atletico keeper Jan Oblak in the 68th minute. The goal was originally ruled out for offside before a video assistant referee review revealed the ball had bounced off Atletico defender Mario Hermoso.

It was reward for Chelsea’s more progressive style in the face of the usual attritional approach from Diego Simeone’s Atletico. They rarely troubled Tuchel’s side who comfortably kept the in-form but increasingly frustrated Luis Suarez at bay.

Chelsea have now gone eight matches unbeaten since Tuchel succeeded Frank Lampard while Giroud is emerging as their Champions League talisman after scoring all four goals in the group-phase victory against Sevilla and a last-minute winner away to Rennes.
