Holders Liverpool dumped out of Champions League

Holders Liverpool are out of the Champions League after a dramatic last-16 second leg against Atletico Madrid went into extra time – and a finely balanced game turned on a catastrophic blunder by goalkeeper Adrian.

Jurgen Klopp’s side – seeking to win the trophy for a seventh time – thought they had overturned Atletico’s 1-0 advantage from the first leg when Roberto Firmino’s first goal at Anfield this season at the start of the added 30 minutes gave them the lead in the tie.

Georginio Wijnaldum’s first-half header was full reward for Liverpool laying siege to the Atletico goal for much of the first 90 minutes.

And yet, as the Kop sensed another memorable Champions League victory, Adrian – deputising for the injured Alisson – paid the price for a dreadful clearance as substitute Marcos Llorente pounced with a low finish to secure Atletico’s crucial away goal.

Llorente struck again with another composed finish in the 105th minute and with the spirit draining out of Liverpool and their supporters, former Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata adding insult to injury with a third in the dying seconds to send Atletico through to the last eight.

  • Liverpool boss warns Atletico of intimidating Anfield crowd

Liverpool boss warns Atletico of intimidating Anfield crowd

Jurgen Klopp warned Atletico Madrid that Anfield will be as intimidating as the Wanda Metropolitano when Liverpool look to overturn a 1-0 loss from the Champions League last-16 first leg.

Saul Niguez’s fourth-minute strike was enough to give the Spanish side the advantage over the defending champions.

Madrid’s stadium was raucous on Tuesday with fans orchestrated by energetic Atletico manager Diego Simeone.

“Atletico fans who can a get ticket… ‘welcome to Anfield’,” said Klopp.

“Emotions are important. Tonight they were obviously completely on the side of Atletico, but I am really looking forward to the second leg.

“We speak from time to time about the power of Anfield and the power a stadium can have and tonight you saw that.

“It’s half-time and we’re 1-0 down. The second half will be played in our stadium and they will feel it.”

Liverpool did not manage a shot on target against a resilient Atletico side – only the second time the Reds have failed to test an opposing goalkeeper since Klopp took over as manager of the club in 2015.

“I have no problem with the result,” added the German, who has never lost a European two-legged tie with Liverpool. “I saw so many happy faces at Atletico, but it’s not over yet.

“I’m not sure what we have to be in the second leg. They were going constantly to the petrol station and we drove with one tank.

“I’m not sure if Diego Simeone saw a lot of the game because he was continually animating the crowd.”

UCL: Liverpool suffer first-leg defeat to Atletico

Liverpool’s defence of their Champions League title hangs in the balance after Saul Niguez’s early strike gave Atletico Madrid an aggregate lead going into the second leg of their last-16 tie at Anfield.

The Reds were given a dose of their own medicine as Atletico harried and hassled throughout, limiting them to just two clear chances and no shots on target.

Those opportunities fell to Mohamed Salah, who headed wide, and Jordan Henderson, whose hooked shot just missed Jan Oblak’s far post.

Klopp replaced Sadio Mane and Salah with Divock Origi and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain but neither made an impact.

Two-time finalists Atletico, who have been on a poor run of form, held on to a fourth-minute lead given to them by Saul. The Spanish midfielder turned sharply to fire home after a corner came off the boot of Fabinho.

The return leg is on Wednesday, 11 March.

Transfer: Edinson Cavani asks to leave PSG

Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani has told Paris St-Germain he wants to leave the club after “an approach” by Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

The 32-year-old has been limited to 14 first-team outings this season after Mauro Icardi’s arrival on a season-long loan from Inter Milan in the summer.

“It’s true that today he asked to leave,” said PSG sporting director Leonardo after a 1-0 win over Lorient in the French Cup on Sunday.

    “We are studying the situation.”

He added: “It’s also true that there has been an approach from Atletico Madrid.”

Cavani joined PSG in 2013 and is the club’s record scorer with 198 goals.

He was not in the squad that beat Lorient and Leonardo added: “We have to listen to him because we have a lot of respect for the player.”

PSG coach Thomas Tuchel appears keen to keep Cavani to help his side’s push for silverware.

“I have said a lot about this, I am not going to repeat myself always on the same subject,” said Tuchel. “If we want to achieve our objectives – winning as many trophies as possible – it’s best with ‘Edi’, yes.”

  • Spanish Super Cup: Atletico upset Barcelona to meet Madrid in final

Spanish Super Cup: Atletico upset Barcelona to meet Madrid in final

It will no longer be the showdown expected at the final of the Spanish Super Cup in Jeddah Saudi Arabia, as Atletico Madrid proved bookmakers wrong on Thursday by knocking out Barcelona to set up a meeting with Real Madrid for an all-Madrid derby.

Atletico came from behind to beat Barcelona 3-2 .

Barca looked on course for a Sunday showdown against Real when they led Atletico 2-1 with nine minutes left but instead it will be a Madrid derby in Saudi Arabia to decide who lifts the trophy.

All five goals were scored during a wild second half in Jeddah that began with Koke putting Atletico in front, just 21 seconds after coming on as a substitute at the interval.

Goals from Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann turned the game on its head, only for Atletico to hit back with a late double, Alvaro Morata converting a penalty in the 81st minute before Angel Correa found a winner in the 86th.

In between, Barcelona also had two goals ruled out after VAR spotted tight offsides while Atletico were denied what looked a clear penalty at 2-2, after the ball clipped the hand of Gerard Pique.

A pulsating contest will have delighted the Spanish Football Federation, who have faced heavy criticism for taking the competition away from Spain to a different continent, and a country that has a long-condemned record on human rights.

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said on Wednesday he preferred the old format but his strong team selection, that included Messi, Griezmann and Luis Suarez, suggested this was a tournament he was eager to win.

It remains to be seen how this defeat might affect the La Liga title race, with Real Madrid and Atletico now enjoying the opportunity not only to win a trophy but score a psychological boost too.

Barca dominated the first half and Griezmann had the best chance, only for his lifted finish from the angle to be saved by the excellent Jan Oblak.

Atletico survived and frustration spilled over at the break as Jordi Alba poked a finger in the face of Joao Felix, who then went head-to-head with Messi. Suarez also had to be pulled away by Stefan Savic.

A spikey end to the first period was trumped by an explosive start to the second as Koke, on for less than a minute, gave Atletico the lead. Felix started the move and Correa slipped a pass behind the scrambling Sergi Roberto for Koke to stab into the bottom corner.

Simeone chose not to celebrate and if he was worried about the amount of time left, he was right, as Barcelona scored twice in 11 minutes.

First, Messi equalised after muscling his way through both Koke and Savic on the edge of the area and then he fired in again after steering a high ball around Koke. This time, however, VAR showed his elbow had served as a cushion.

Disappointment was brief though as Alba crossed for Suarez and while his header was brilliant pawed away by Oblak, Griezmann nodded in the rebound.

Pique thought he had a third after Arturo Vidal half-volleyed Messi’s free-kick across the box but again VAR intervened.

Atletico were revived. Correa should have pulled them level but appeared keener to find Felix than shoot himself and when the rebound did fall to the Felix, Sergi Roberto made a last-ditch block.

But the floodgates had opened in the Barca defence. Vitolo was next to go clear and this time he was brought down by Neto. Morata converted the penalty.

Then, Morata skipped free down the right and his cross seemed to strike the dangling hand of Pique but after consulting VAR, the referee strangely decided against another penalty.

Yet moments later, Atletico were in again. Correa this time sprinted in behind and while Neto made a block, the ball had enough power to cross the line. Now, Simeone could celebrate.

  • Morata goal helps Atletico Madrid to beat Bayer Leverkusen

Morata goal helps Atletico Madrid to beat Bayer Leverkusen

Atletico Madrid substitute Alvaro Morata scored a late second half header to give his team a 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday.

The win sent them top of their UEFA Champions League Group D.

In a game of few chances and many mistakes, neither team came close to breaking the deadlock before Morata scored.

He did this with a powerful downward header from a Renan Lodi cross in the 78th minute.

The goal gave the hosts a major boost for a top-two finish and a spot in the knockout stages.

The Spaniards, unbeaten now in three group games, are on seven points, three ahead of Italy’s Juventus, who played against third-placed Lokomotiv Moscow later on Tuesday.

The Germans, without a point, are in last place and all but eliminated in the run for a spot in the last 16.

Atletico, who have now failed to score during the first half in their last six UEFA Champions League matches, lacked spark and intensity in the first half, with Leverkusen in control in midfield.

The visitors gradually started finding pockets of space with Kevin Volland and Kerem Demirbay but they also were missing the final pass.

Lodi completed a quickfire move with a fine first touch and shot to test Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky in a rare Atletico attack in the first half.

The game picked up the pace after the break, with the hosts becoming more aggressive and Diego Costa in front of goal narrowly missing to connect with a Kieran Trippier cross.

Morata did it better in the 78th when he headed in Lodi’s cross for the winner.

  • La Liga: Barca fined over Griezmann approach

Barcelona have been fined only 300 euros (£265) by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) for their approach to Antoine Griezmann while he was at La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid.

Spanish champions Barcelona signed Griezmann after paying his 120m-euro (£107m) buyout clause on 1 July.

But the federation said Barca broke its rules by negotiating with Griezmann without Atletico’s permission.

Atletico believed his buyout clause should have been 200m euros (£179m).

They claimed that Barca began talking to the player in March, when that was the size of his buyout clause.

His cost then dropped to 120m euros at the start of July, which was when he signed for Barca, but Atletico claimed the “commitment of the player and Barcelona was closed” prior to the clause reducing.

The player was absolved of any responsibility by the federation.

The RFEF’s statement read: “Taking into account the economic capacity of the club and the amount of the fine, this committee is aware that the payment of 300 euros, beyond its merely symbolic character, will not damage the sanctioned club and, probably, will not persuade other clubs in the same situation in the future to adjust their conduct to the regulations.”

However, the RFEF determined that was “not a sufficient reason” to impose a one-match closure of the Nou Camp – its only other possible sanction – which it says is reserved for “infractions of a different nature”.

Griezmann – who had announced in May he would leave the Madrid side – signed a five-year deal with Barca, which includes an 800m euro (£717m) release clause, to become the world’s sixth most expensive signing.

Following the move, Atletico released a statement in which they expressed their “strongest repulsion for the behaviour of both, especially Barcelona”.

The Madrid club previously reported Barcelona to Fifa over an alleged illegal approach for Griezmann in December 2017.

  • La Liga could block Griezmann's move to Barca

Antoine Griezmann’s move to Barcelona could be blocked in a row over the fee, La Liga president Javier Tebas says.

Atletico Madrid complained after Barca announced they had signed the France forward, having activated his 120m euro (£107m) release clause on 12 July.
The clause dropped from 200m to 120m euros on 1 July, but Atleti claim the deal was done before then and that they are due the larger amount.
“It is possible to block a player’s transfer,” Tebas told Onda Cero.
“La Liga will have to decide what course of action to take.”
Griezmann has already played a friendly for his new club, a 2-1 friendly defeat by Chelsea in Japan.
Tebas said: “[Atletico] submitted a complaint and put in doubt whether we should pass Griezmann’s licence to Barcelona.
“There’s a process that has been put in motion and those overseeing it will have to come to resolve the case.”
Atletico reported Barcelona to Fifa over an alleged illegal approach for Griezmann in December 2017.
The player rejected an offer from Barcelona last summer. But Atletico claim Barca talked to him again in March and accused the Spanish champions of disrespect.

  • Transfer: Tottenham's Trippier joins Atletico Madrid

England right-back Kieran Trippier has completed a £20m move to Spanish side Atletico Madrid from Tottenham.

The 28-year-old, who joined Spurs from Burnley in June 2015 and played more than 100 times for the London club, has signed a three-year deal with the La Liga side.
He had admitted he was not sure he would see out his Spurs contract, which was due to expire in 2022.
Trippier is Atletico’s third major defensive signing of the summer.
Coach Diego Simeone has already recruited centre-back Felipe from Porto and left-back Renan Lodi from Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense, while Uruguay defender Diego Godin has moved to Inter Milan.
The La Liga runners-up did, however, receive £107.7m from the sale of France striker Antoine Griezmann to champions Barcelona.
Trippier, whose last appearance for Tottenham was in the 2-0 Champions League final defeat by Liverpool in June, did not travel with the Spurs squad for their pre-season tour of Asia.

  • Barcelona complete €120m Griezmann signing

Barcelona have officially announced the signing of Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid, with the French forward putting pen to paper after the Blaugrana paid his full €120 million (£107m/$134m) release clause.
The move has not been without drama, however, as Atleti recently hit out at both Barca and Griezmann himself for their conduct after it was revealed that the two parties had been in negotiations and reached an agreement in March, a time during which Diego Simeone’s side were still fighting for La Liga and the Champions League.
Indeed, Atletico were only informed by the World Cup winner in May that he wanted to leave at the end of the season, further frustrating the Spanish capital side after delaying making public his intention to stay in a televised announcement the season before.
With the deal now completed, however, Griezmann will now link up with Lionel Messi and Co. as the Spanish champions aim to retain their Liga title.
