  • Borno Gov, Shettima opens up on attacks by Boko Haram

Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima on Thursday explained why Boko Haram insurgents swooped on his convoy on Tuesday, killing three civilians and a soldier.

The governor said the attack was a mere propaganda strategy by the insurgents to attract global media attention and instill fear in citizens and troops.

Shettima, who reacted through his Special Adviser on Media & Strategy, Isa Gusau, sympathised with those who lost their loved ones in the attack.

The governor’s convoy was ambushed and attacked by the terrorists on his way to a political campaign rally in the northern part of the state.

Gusau confirmed the death of three people in the incident.

A splinter group of Boko Haram loyal to the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Reuters reported that Islamic State on Wednesday claimed responsibility for an attack on the convoy of the governor of northeastern Borno State, according to the group’s Amaqnews agency.

The group said at least 42 people were killed in Tuesday’s attack. Sources told Reuters the death toll was between three and 10 people, though an unknown number of others were beheaded,” the report said.

According to Gusau, the governor has launched a probe into the circumstances that led to the incident, stressing that the attack will not dampen his commitment and confidence of troops.

A statement by Shettima’s spokesman reads:

Governor Kashim Shettima mourns, with the deepest thoughts and heartfelt condolences, the demise of some fellow citizens, brothers, associates and loyal supporters following an unfortunate ambush of some vehicles in his convoy by suspected insurgents on Tuesday evening on Gamboru Road, headquarters of Ngala Local Government Area.

While the governor is expecting full security briefing to get accurate information on the incident, preliminary report on Wednesday, confirmed the killing of three persons during the attack, which principally aimed to attract local and global media attention in order to sustain propaganda strategy and to instill fear in citizens and gallant troops.

Governor Shettima, who returned at night yesterday, will today (Thursday) meet families of those affected by the attack. The governor will also meet some security heads to review the incident and, more importantly, to continue his determined collaboration with all security agencies and volunteers in remaining committed to the ongoing fight against Boko Haram.

The unfortunate incident will not make the governor to doubt the capacity of the gallant and patriotic personnel of the Nigerian armed forces who have dedicated their lives fighting for peace and the freedom of Borno people.

The governor has absolute confidence in the armed forces and given his access to raw updates, he is aware of the successes being recorded by the armed forces despite Tuesday’s and previous attacks by the insurgents.

For one success recorded by the insurgents, the armed forces record dozens against them. The Governor remains optimistic and urges citizens to be calm, prayerful and supportive of the Nigerian armed forces and volunteers through means that include (as they have been doing) the sharing of useful information.

Tuesday’s incident happened while the Governor was on his way to Gamboru in continuation of campaigns for the presidential and national assembly elections coming up on Saturday.

The governor had left Maiduguri on Tuesday morning and stopped for campaigns in Mafa and Dikwa local government areas before heading to Gamboru where he passed the night and returned to Maiduguri on Wednesday. He had on Monday travelled to Damasak, headquarters of Mobbar Local Government Area in northern Borno.

Before then, he had previously held campaigns in most parts of northern Borno, including Monguno where he spent the night. He had also been to all the nine local government areas of southern Borno, including Chibok, Gwoza, Askira-Uba and Biu, where he spent days.

The governor extends his deepest gratitude to friends, associates and other well-meaning Nigerians that have shown concern over the incident,” the statement said.

  • Boko Haram planning to launch attack before general elections in Nigeria – US warns

The United States of America has warned of an impeding attack by members of the Boko Haram and ISIS West Africa.

In a statement published on Friday, January 18, 2019, on its official website in Nigeria, the US said the insurgents had threatened to attack public places.

The US said although it did not have information on attacks targeted at the embassy, it advised the citizens to review their movements and keep a low profile.

There is an increase in ISIS propaganda videos specifically directed to Nigeria and the ongoing civil unrest in Borno State and the North-East.

ISIS West Africa and Boko Haram have both stated they plan to disrupt the upcoming 2019 presidential elections by conducting attacks on Nigerian security and infrastructure, as well as places of gathering such as markets, hotels, and malls.

While we have no specific threat information to the U.S. Embassy or within Nigeria during the election season, U.S. citizens in Nigeria should remember to follow personal security precautions on a regular basis.

Actions to take: Expect additional police and military checkpoints and possible roadblocks throughout the country. Carry proper identification, including a U.S. passport with a current Nigerian visa, if needed; exercise caution when walking or driving at night; review travel routes and times to reduce time and place predictability; avoid crowds and demonstrations; be aware of your surroundings; keep a low profile; stay alert in public places, including schools, hospitals, government facilities, places of worship, tourist locations, and transportation hubs,” the statement said.

The US embassy also advised the citizens to monitor press reports and review their travel advisory for Nigeria.

It gave out contact details of the embassy in Abuja and the consulate in Lagos for further assistance.

  • Okonkwo’s Attacks on the Atikus: Hand of Easu, But Voice of Jacob, By Odilim Enwegbara

One thing I learned from my late father was to never write in a hurry or under the influence of any form of substance that could easily derail one’s mind and thoughts. Fully aware of both the immense good and the immense damage the pen can easily do, Edward Bulwer-Lytton who coined “the pen is mightier than the sword” insisted that the pen should be used with the utmost care by whoever has its power because, once harm is committed with it, it becomes extremely irretrievable. Even Euripides, the famous Greek tragedian, warned that as soft and powerless as the tongue looks, “The tongue is mightier than the blade,” so care should be exercised in our use of the tongue. It is especially so in fast-emerging modern societies like ours. Civility should always prevail.

Since my attention was drawn to Churchill Okonkwo’s long-standing pattern of delusional obsession with Atiku Abubakar and members of his family, all my investigations to find out the reasons have shown he has paranoid personality disorder (PPP). One of the frequent physiognomies of this mental illness is pervasive distrust, suspicion and hatred of some highly successful people. And once the hatred is built in the sufferer’s mind, his hypersensitivity goes on to trigger an endless ease to insult the hated person or persons. Thus, people with PPP tend to engage in endless insults of whoever is their target, and they do so without any fear of reprisal; being a mental disorder, the PPP sickness hardly allows its patients a sense of even-handedness or shame.

It is on this sorry note that I intend to diagnose Churchill Okonkwo’s attack on Dr Jennifer Atiku Abubakar. I will try to avoid joining issues with him; as our people say, if a sane man ran after an insane man in a market square, both of them would be regarded as insane. That is why I easily get lost reading Okonkwo’s pieces on many Nigerians. He starts with vulgar language and ends with even more vulgar language. Civility is always lacking. Sometimes you are left with nothing else except wonder about his deep-seated anger. But that is common with PPP patients.

The worst insult from an unreasonable man is to go after another man’s wife. That is a dangerous line for a fool to cross, because every man’s pride lies in how he is able to protect his wife from other men’s insults. Men, no matter how highly placed in the society, would rather forgive those who insult them than those who insult their wives. Even the friendly and always-smiling Bill Clinton might never forgive President Donald Trump for the unprintable insults he heaped on his wife Hillary during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaigns.

Like her husband who is self-made, Dr Jennifer Atiku Abubakar started as a broadcast journalist and ended up a renowned political scientist, an accomplished academic (teaching at some great U.S. universities and some other countries), and, as if not enough, carved out a niche for herself in law practice. As the managing partner at Miyetti Law in Nigeria, she provides strategic counsel and general advisory to governments and corporations around the world. She is also the editor-in-chief of the Miyetti Quarterly Law Review.

Jennifer Atiku Abubakar has earned herself great achievements — exceptional achievements that make her stand out anywhere in the world. Becoming this successful through personal and professional excellence driven by lifelong learning always requires immense personal discipline and self-respect. It requires continuous cosmopolitan outlook and incredible sacrifices to keep the required high integrity for nourishing a great success story.

And I can’t wait to ask: Is it this same Jennifer that Churchill Okonkwo could qualify as a con artist whom the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs investigated from 2000 to 2008 over a report that she helped Atiku Abubakar “bring over $40 million in suspect funds into the United States through wire transfers sent by offshore corporations”? I remember what I had to go through when I wired the sum of $100,000 from my London Barclays Bank account to a bank in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Notwithstanding the reason I gave – the money was for my education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), $48,000 for a semester tuition and $52,000 for my upkeep (books, housing, feeding, etc.) – the money was still withheld and only later released after the conclusion of investigations which required MIT to provide information to the Federal Government Office in Boston to that effect.

Does Okonkwo know how much $40 million is? If he did, he should have known that no foreign corporation would have engaged in such a wire transfer on behalf of an individual. And, of course, no U.S. bank would have accepted to pay such huge sum into an individual or corporate account without first reporting it and getting approval from one of the U.S. Federal Reserve banks. Perhaps Mr Okonkwo doesn’t even know that the Homeland Security he referred to in his article was only set up as a department by President George W. Bush after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Does he know that with its core responsibility being to prevent such attacks in the U.S., one of the preventative measures is monitoring movement of large funds not just in the U.S. but also around the world? Does he know that such $40 million wire transfer would also have been blocked with the Justice Department quickly mandating the CIA, FBI, and the State Department to go after whoever was involved and forcefully bring culprits to the U.S. for justice, no matter who they are and where in the world they reside?

Why should such offence have to require a Congressional investigation, which is what Congressional hearing is all about? If that is the case, why hasn’t the U.S. Justice Department declared the Atikus wanted? Or, as I asked earlier in a similar accusation against Atiku Abubakar himself, where is the evidence, where is the so-called Congressional Report in the Congressional Archives? What is the reference number of the so-called hearing report? Maybe Okonkwo does not know what Congressional hearings are all about; if he did, he would have known that Congress is different from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) whose duty it is to conduct full investigation into such offences and bring culprits to justice without a second wasted.

“Jennifer Atiku helped her husband establish the American University of Nigeria at a point poor Nigerian students were languishing at home due to strike action by university lectures over poor funding.” Certainly, this only confirms Okonkwo’s obsession with the Atikus. But wait a minute, what is the sin committed by the Atikus for setting up a leading university in his Adamawa state, a world-branded university? After all the trillions of naira Tinubu has earned from Lagos as its tax collector, where is Tinubu’s own university in Lagos? What about Buhari? Can Okonkwo show us at least a primary school built in Katsina by Buhari? As rich as Dangote is – he is the richest man in Africa – where is Dangote University in Kano?

I ask these questions because one of the greatest achievements any sensible man could make is founding a university for his community or his people. With AUN, Atiku is today in the class of John Harvard who funded the establishment of Harvard University; William Barton Rogers, founder, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Leland Stanford, founder of Stanford University; Samuel Andrew, Yale University; Ezra Cornell, founder of Cornell University, etc. We have to praise the Atikus for their foresight: the leading AUN annually saves the country hundreds of millions of dollars that would have been spent overseas by rich Nigerians who want their children educated at elite universities overseas.

Here is another trifling accusation of his: “…Jennifer Douglas Atiku cannot be trusted when she said that a ‘PDP government would create an environment for business to thrive with a view to ensuring that the citizens were lifted above poverty.’ Jennifer Douglas Atiku is deceiving Nigerians when she said that ‘there is an urgent need to get every sector of the country working again to enable citizens to enjoy a better life.’’’ As a mother, what more should Dr (Mrs) Jennifer Atiku Abubakar want Nigerians to expect from her husband than economic prosperity and jobs? What was her sin in asking Nigerians to expect a more prosperous country from the soon-to-be PDP government led by her husband?

Why am I even wasting my pen and time responding to this young man who, no doubt, is suffering from PPP? Well, it is not to join issues with him. I know that every intelligent Nigerian who reads him would understand that his accusations are completely baseless. Someone who is taking full advantage of this PPP patient could have continued to use him to try blackmail the Atikus.

It cannot be a mere coincidence that each time Bola Tinubu attacks Atiku Abubakar, Churchill Okonkwo writes a follow-up, in most cases to strengthen Tinubu’s earlier accusations. Why are both making up these imaginary accusations? Has Churchill Okonkwo become the media version of Tinubu’s “Area boys”? If Tinubu had issues with Senator Dino Melaye and had been using the police and DSS to attack his beautiful wife, should the same Tinubu have approved Okonkwo’s blackmailing of Atiku’s amiable wife?

Why Tinubu? Someone will ask. Tinubu’s desperation to reelect Buhari has become a do-or-die affair because re-electing Buhari automatically clears the way for his 2023 presidential ambitions. Buhari fully aware of Tinubu’s desperation handed him his reelection campaigns. Oshiomhole was made APC Chairman simply because of Tinubu’s 2013 ambition. And the $50 million Oshiomhole extorted from party members during the primaries has since been deployed in bribing and making those PDP members who refused to join APC given EFCC threats to join APC. Also N500 billion — I repeat N500 billion — has been set aside for vote buying targeted at 25 million voters with each to receive N20,000.

Also for Tinubu’s 2023 ambitions Ekiti and Osun governorship elections had to be rigged at all costs. Sponsoring powerful, rich and greedy Southeast business men has since been done to ensure that Atiku and Obi were defeated in Southeast. Billions of naira has since been handed to these business men to ferociously campaign against Atiku/Obi. Denying Ambode a reelection is important part of the package since Tinubu needs a governor who should hand Lagos’s treasury in preparation for his 2023 presidential ambition.

Dangote and Otedola had to be brought in with a promise to take over the country’s economy as they may wish. But as a result of Obasanjo’s alarm Tinubu’s dragging of the two powerful businessmen is in suspense. Rochas Okorocha’s Imo political base was crippled so as to ensure he never plans 2023 presidential ambitions. The Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Walter Onnoghen has to be replaced with someone who could easily give APC a free ride in the judiciary after rigging the presidential election. Making sure nothing stops the planned rigging, Buhari’s niece Amina Zakari has to be appointed the INEC collation officer. Zakari’s new appointment only confirms Tinubu’s desperation which is forcing the INEC Chairman to play along in re-electing Buhari at all cost.

But there are serious problems Tinubu faces for his 2023 ambitions. First, powerful Muslim Northern politicians will block his ambitions as he is expected to choose a Christian Northerner as a running mate. Second, Buhari wants Gov Kayode Fayemi with either Suleiman Adamu (his nephew and Water Resources Minister) or Mohammed Bello (FCT Minister) as running mate.

Tinubu or no Tinubu, I am calling the Atikus to forgive Okonkwo for the young man is a PPP patient. Yes, he must have committed pen murder, but does an insane person, who lacks sense of judgment and the consequences of his actions, be held responsible? But is this not an opportunity for the Atikus to remember that great leaders are great because they always focus on the ball rather than the noisy spectators’ distractions?

That is why from Okonkwo’s attacks on the Atikus, one sees a young man crying for help. As president-elect and as the new father of the nation, besides uniting and reconciling the overly divided and traumatised people of Nigeria and spreading peace and love, people like Churchill Okonkwo deserve presidential friendship and possibly assisted with picking up their psychiatric treatment bills. This now known, President Atiku should ensure that all psychiatric facilities across the nation are given urgent upgrading.

Coming out of jail, Mandela not only forgave those who jailed him for 27 years but befriended them. And Mandela was right: without revenging one’s offender, burden of guilt remains unrelieved. Mahatma Gandhi was also right, “An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.” With Gandhi’s forgiving heart he forgave all his enemies, including the same British imperialists who colonised, exploited and killed thousands of Indians.

18 feared killed in fresh Zamfara attack

About 18 persons were reportedly killed when armed bandits invaded two communities in violence-prone Zamfara State on New Year day, anonymous sources said.

The sources say the gunmen stormed Dutsin kure and Manasa in Tsafe local government on Tuesday leaving deaths and destruction in their trail.

Nine persons were reportedly shot dead in Dutsin kure, while another nine were killed in Manasa in the early hours of Tuesday.

The attackers stormed the two towns 72 hours after Governor Abdulaziz Yari held a security meeting with security chiefs and traditional chiefs after a similar bloodbath a few days ago.

Sources say the attackers stormed the towns in a convoy of motorcycles, armed with assorted weapons including AK 47 rifles.

According to a report by Premium Times, the bandits operated unchallenged for hours after threatening to deal with anyone who opposed their movement.

Many of the survivors have fled the towns for neighbouring places,” the survivor said.”Those who are close to Katsina have gone there while those who are very close to Sokoto, like the people of Maradun have relocated there,” the medium quoted a source.

The attackers also destroyed large storages of farm produce, the villagers had kept hidden after the last spate of attacks.

Meanwhile, the state police command spokesperson, Shehu Mohammed when contacted said the command is currently “making efforts toward bringing the culprits to book”.

The command is leaving no stone unturned toward arresting the situation,” he said. “Police have been deployed to not only those places (attacked) but to all other places that are affected.”

  • 17 die in fresh Zamfara attack – Police

The police in Zamfara have confirmed 17 people killed in an attack by armed bandits on a community in the state.

The attack occurred in Magami Village, Faru District of Maradun Local Government Area.

A statement by the Zamfara police spokesperson, Muhammed Shehu, said the attack occurred on Saturday evening.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the attack occured at about 4 p.m.

Mr Shehu said more police officers have been deployed to the area.

He said the Acting Governor of Zamfara State, Sanusi Rikiji; the police commissioner and other heads of security agencies were at the scene in the early hours of Sunday.

The officials were there “for on the spot assessment with a view to putting in more proactive security measures that will bring lasting solutions to the security challenges in the area and other parts of the state,” he said.

In view of the visit, the commissioner of police has deployed additional unit of Tactical teams which comprises PMF/CTU Personnel to the affected area to complement the existing security emplacement.

The unit of the PMF/CTU personnel has already arrived the village and they were directed to operate in collaboration with the military and other security personnel to restore normalcy and prevent any security threat by any disgruntled person or group of persons.

While the command condoles the government and people of Zamfara State over the unfortunate incident, it has also vowed to arrest and bring to justice the perpetrators of this dastardly act.

The command in this regard appeals for continued collaboration with all the security agencies in the state to bring lasting peace, safety and security to Zamfara State,” the spokesperson said.

Mr Rikiji also on Sunday attended the funeral prayer of some of the victims killed by the bandits.

Mr Rikiji, who is the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, condoled with the families of the victims and people of Maradun Emirate and described the incident as unfortunate and worrisome.

He said the state government was concerned about security matters.

It is very disturbing, so distracting the way our people are being killed by terrorists.

More often than not, we could not even concentrate and face our work, due to pressures of insecurity in our communities,” NAN quotes the acting govenrors as saying.

He urged security operatives in the state to maximise their efforts in tackling the challenges.

Mr Rikiji noted that the state government had been providing all necessary support to security agencies in the state.

We are ever ready to continue to offer any support to security agencies, at whatever cost, in order to address the current security situation in the state,” he said.

He urged people of the state to continue with prayers to seek Allah’s interventions to end the situation.

The acting governor also appealed to communities to provide information on security to security agencies for prompt response.

The heads of security agencies in the state were also in attendance during the prayers.

In their separate remarks, the Emir of Maradun, Garba Tambari, and Chairman Maradun Local Government Area, Yahaya Shehu, called for the deployment of more security personnel in the area.

Hundreds of people have been killed by armed bandits in Zamfara in 2018. The killings have continued despite the deployment of thousands of security personnel including soldiers as well as air force personnel and equipment to the state.

  • Boko Haram releases graphic video of bloody attack on Nigerian soldiers

A graphic video of Boko Haram insurgents attacking and killing some Nigerian soldiers was on Thursday uploaded on the internet.

The National Assembly on Thursday suspended plenary in honour of the fallen soldiers, even as a cross-section of Nigerians expressed concerns about the worsening state of insecurity in the country.

In an extremely graphic video believed to have been released by the ISWAP faction of the Boko Haram, the insurgents were seen attacking a military base at a bush hat was littered with bloody corpses of Nigerian soldiers.

The five minutes and 32 seconds video started with an Arabic male voice playing over clips of video footage showing a large number of assembled Boko Haram members who were all kitted in military desert combat fatigue. The gathered insurgents formed a circle around a burning fire while taking instruction from a commander standing in their midst before setting out for the operation.

The footage later showed the armed insurgents in a convoy of Hilux vehicles and gun trucks heading towards the location of the attack.

Shortly after that, the video showed the Boko Haram gunmen advancing into a military camp that was fortified with trenches while shooting sporadically.

The gunmen were not seen encountering any form of serious resistance as they made their way into the military base believed to be Metele. The attackers were seen walking over corpses of soldiers while shooting different calibres of guns and warheads.

Some soldiers were seen at a distance firing back at the invading Boko Haram fighters from trenches before they were all gunned down. A close-up shot showed the soldiers lying dead inside the trenches.

At a point in the video, the insurgents were seen walking over the corpses of fallen soldiers, shooting at them at close range and retrieving the rifles even as they also searched their pockets for valuables.

A seemingly dead soldier was seen still holding onto his rifle before a Boko Haram gunman arrived to fire at his corpse and yanked the gun off his cold grip.

An injured fair-skinned soldier who appeared to be in his early fifties was also seen being taken away by the Boko Haram fighters towards the end of the video. The soldier who was still carrying a sack bag over his shoulder was later placed behind a pickup van as the insurgents drove him away to an unknown destination.

The insurgents, most of whom were shown wearing hoods to cover their faces, were seen boarding a vehicle belonging to the Nigerian military.

A male voice speaking in Arabic said: “People should embrace the fear of God in all their dealings, and fear the wrath of God on the day of resurrection. Your ticket to paradise is here in this world; your deeds will decide which part of heaven you will find yourselves – either in heaven or in hell depends on your good deeds and bad deeds.

So people should strive to hold onto the injunctions of God.

Remember that God watches all your deeds and accurate accounts are being taken. You cannot be victorious in the sight of Allah unless you wish for your brother that which you wish for yourself.

If you do not do this, know that your worship is worthless.

In every society there are infidels and evil-doers; hence people should stay clear from them and their bad deeds to avoid the wrath of God even here on earth.”

  • Football referee attacked, described as ‘worst in Britain’ [Video]

An attack on a referee at an amateur football match has been described as the “worst assault on a match official on British soil”.

Sunday’s incident occurred during a cup game organised by the Turkish Community Football Federation in north London.

The Federation says it is “shocked and disgusted” and “strongly condemns” the incident, which was filmed.

Police told BBC Sport they are investigating an alleged assault on a man in his late 20s.

It is understood the referee suffered only minor injuries during the game at New River sports centre in White Hart Lane, which saw Dumlupinar Yeni Malatyaspor beat GS FC 2-1.

The Metropolitan Police said it was called to a report of an assault between 18:50 BST and 19:05 BST in White Hart Lane.

Footage of the incident was sent to charity Ref Support as part of its Referee Abuse Must Stop campaign.

It shows a man being tackled to the ground and kicked on the floor by a group of people on a football pitch.

“This is the worst assault on a match official we have seen on British soil,” said Ref Support’s chief executive Martin Cassidy.

“The subject needs to be taken seriously and the FA referees department needs to allow a pilot of body cams at grassroots level, to not only act as a deterrent to assaults and abuse but also as an evidence-collecting device.”

The TCFF and the London Football Association are investigating the incident while the Football Association says it has started a disciplinary process.

“Both the London FA and the FA condemn any assault on a match official and have offered support to the referee,” said the FA.

The TCFF said it is also meeting the team involved to “discuss our options with regard to any action we will take against the club and individuals involved.”

Ian Braid, managing director of Duty of Care in Action Sport, added: “The trend of increasing abuse of match officials is something sport, not just football, needs to address, not only for the well-being and welfare of the individuals involved but to address the trend of declining numbers of people volunteering to be an official.”

  • Buhari’s Impeachment move: PDP condemns attack on Senator Urhoghide

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the attack on a senator, Matthew Urhoghide, describing it as completely inexcusable.

The party in a statement on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbodinyan, accused the ruling APC of masterminding the attack.

Recall that Mr Urhoghide (PDP, Edo South) was attacked at the Benin airport when he arrived Edo State on Saturday.

The lawmaker had during the week called for the impeachment of President Buhari for withdrawing $496 million from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) without the National Assembly’s consent.

It was for that reason he was attacked.

We are miffed that the APC has degenerated to the level of misdirecting its youth and unleashing them to attack and mete out violence on law-abiding citizens including a senator of the Federal Republic,” Mr Ologbodiyan said.

We are equally irked that the attack happened in the full glare of high-ranking police officers in the state, who did nothing to protect the lawmaker but adopted an aloofness that emboldened the APC youths.”

The Edo police commissioner confirmed that the police’ intervention helped mitigate the violence.

We note that such brazen attack is recipe for wide-scale violence. But for the restraint exhibited by the PDP youths and supporters of Senator Urhoghide, there would have been a breakdown of law and order at the airport and which might even extend to other parts of the state.

The PDP restates our stand in commending Senator Urhoghide for his courage in standing for the Nigerian people to move the motion for the Senate to investigate President Muhammadu Buhari for alleged violations of our constitution.

The attack on Senator Urhoghide therefore shows the intolerance and deployment of unpatriotic acts by agents of the APC, including the invasion of the Senate and forceful removal of the mace, to intimidate the parliament and destroy our democracy,” the PDP said.
