  • Over 40,000 persons displaced in Benue gunmen attack – SEMA

The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said over 40,000 persons had been displaced following the recent gunmen attack in Guma and Logo Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Mr Emmanuel Shior told newsmen in Makurdi on Friday that the agency had opened four camps for the displaced persons in the affected areas.

Shior disclosed that Gov. Samuel Ortom had been extremely worried over the plight of the people.

“As we speak over 40,000 persons have so far been displaced as a result of the attacks on our people in Guma and Logo LGAs.

“Government has decided to open four camps, three in Guma LGA and one in Logo LGA, the camps in Guma LGA are in Daudu, Gbajimba and Agasha, while the camp in Logo LGA is in Ugba,” he said.

Shior said that the state government decided to locate the camps in areas considered safest in the LGAs for security reasons.

“The camps are in areas that are safe and enough security has being provided for the safety of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

“What we are doing at the moment is to open temporary camps except the one in Daudu that already has existing camp facilities, the others camps are situated in primary schools located in the areas.

“We do not hope to keep them in the camps for a long time, remember this is January and most of the affected persons are farmers who are still harvesting their crops,” he said.

Shior said that government was concerned about the security of the people and their communities to enable them to return back to their homes instead of staying in the camps.

He assured the IDPs that though they were displaced they were not misplaced as government and his agency would do everything possible to give them minimum comfort.

Magu Confirming the attack on his farmhouse yesterday, Magu vowed that he would not bow to the antics of his detractors in the prosecution of the anti-corruption war in Nigeria.

Magu said he would do all within his powers to rid Nigeria of corruption, despite the spate of physical and verbal assaults by those opposed to the war.

The EFCC boss, who spoke through spokesman of the agency, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said the commission would not speculate on the motive for the attack.

“EFCC can confirm an attack on the property of the acting Chairman of the Commission, Ibrahim Magu, which unfortunately resulted in the death of a security official.

“The property, a farmhouse located in Karshi, a suburb of Abuja, was attacked by unknown gunmen at about 10pm on December 12, 2017 . “The unidentified men murdered a police sergeant on duty.

The incident was the second such attack on the same farmhouse. ‘’While the commission will not speculate on the motives for the attack or the sponsors, it wishes to state that the EFCC under the leadership of Ibrahim Magu will not be deterred in its mission of ridding Nigeria of corruption,” he said.

It will be recalled that gunmen, yet to be identified had in August this year, descended on the office of the agency in Zone Seven in the FCT, destroying the building, but the motive of the attack is yet to be ascertained.

  • Captured Boko Haram member, Mohammed confesses he was in Ondo to carry out attack

A suspected member of the Boko Haram sect, Mohammed Bashir, who was arrested by men of the Ondo State Police Command on Saturday confessed on yesterday that he was in the state for an attack.

Mohammed, who was arrested by anti-riot policemen, said his friends in Nasarawa State introduced the group to him.

The 20-year-old was arrested while looking for a cafeteria with his colleagues in preparation for an operation. He has been handed over to the Army.

Mohammed said he relocated from Nasarawa to Ondo State with his younger brother, who is also a member of the group, after some successful operations.

He added that his colleagues were in Nasarawa and some northern states, but some of them relocated to the Southwest, including Ondo State.

Commissioner of Police Gbenga Adeyanju, who paraded the suspect, said the Army would take over the matter. He will be prosecuted, he said.

Adeyanju said the commitment of the police command led to the arrest of the two suspected Boko Haram members held in the state in the last one week.

Adeyanju urged the public to inform the police of any strange movements in their areas, adding that the police cannot do it alone.

  • Ajimobi summons security chiefs over attacks on Olubadan’s palace

Governor Ajibola Ajimobi of Oyo State has summoned security chiefs in the state over attacks on the on the Popoyemoja Palace of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the attack by some unknown gunmen was unleashed at the Olubadan’s palace on Monday during the coronation ceremony of some mogajis and bales.

The meeting which had in attendance, the General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan; Commissioner of Police at the state command; Director of Department of State Services; State Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and heads of other security agencies in the state.

However, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 11, Mr. Agboola Oshodi-Glover, earlier in the day vowed that the five gunmen who shot sporadically at the palace of the Olubadan, during the installation of Baales (village heads) will soon be fished out and taken to court for proper justice.

The Police boss who is in charge of Oyo, Osun and Ondo States also assured that security will be beefed up around the palace.

Oshodi-Glover spoke Tuesday while playing a courtesy visit on the Olubadan in company of the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Abiodun Odude and other top police officers in the Zone in respect of the shooting incident.

Acknowledging that the security operatives never got a hint on the planned attacked pointing out that, having the information would have helped the security operatives to keep the attackers off. He added that, with the incident, the police will investigate the matter thoroughly and leave no stone unturned.

He said: “Definitely, security will be beefed up around the palace and more importantly, those miscreants who did that will be fished out and will be taken to court for proper justice to take its cause.

“I don’t know any news behind the news on this matter. But we are going to investigate what happened. If we knew the news behind the news, the gunmen would not even get close to the palace. Now that we have known, we would do everything possible and no stone would be left unturned.

While assuring the people of the state that the police is high on alert to ensure the safety of lives and property, the police boss appealed to the people who have information on the identity of the unidentified gunmen to make same available to the police so as to fast track getting to the root of the matter.

“The policemen are on high alert and citizens should be rest assured that they are safe. We are also calling on the citizens, who saw what happened and who have information to let the police have them towards helping us in getting into the root of all these.

“The steps the police are taking will make all and sundry to be happy. The Yoruba tradition must be respected and respect must be accorded to the people and institutions that deserve it. The hoodlums are hereby warned to desist from unruly behaviour. Those that perpetrated the invasion, we are going to make sure that we get them”, Oshodi-Glover assured.

Addressing the visitor, the monarch who expresses happiness at the visit and the decision of the police boss to do on the spot assessment of the situation.

Oba Adetunji, who described the Monday incident as shocking maintained that his decision to install the minor chiefs was within the ambit of the chieftaincy laws pointing out that the arm of government that is saddled with the responsibility to challenge the authority of Olubadan in respect of installation is the court, and not anybody or any threat from anyone whosoever.

While assuring that the Palace will make available anything or information needed by the police during its investigation, the monarch maintained that the central figure in the Olubadan chieftaincy position is the Olubadan himself as the Olubadan-in-Council is just an advisory body and not a legal entity.

Olubadan said, “I am very happy to welcome you. What the police should do is what you have done. When you heard of a security issue in the palace, the first thing is to come as you have done to see things for yourself.

“As a monarch of no mean repute, we are irrevocably committed to the protection of lives and property at all times, and we are irrevocably committed to a collaborative effort with the Nigeria Police Force to ensure peace and harmony.

“What happened on Monday was very shocking, to say the least, because by choosing to confer minor chieftaincies like Mogaji and Baale on deserving individuals, is within the ambit of the chieftaincy laws. The central figure in that chieftaincy position is the Olubadan. Olubadan-in-Council is just an advisory body, it is not a legal entity.

“Therefore, whether the Olubadan does it or not, it is not questionable. The arm of government that is saddled with the responsibility to challenge the authority of Olubadan in respect of installation is the court, and not anybody or any threat from anyone. Anything you need concerning your investigation will be done for you.

“What I want people to know is that whatever anybody does, he does it for himself. Whoever refuses to do the right thing is doing it for himself. Whatever position that we are today, so many people had been there in the past, at a time we have not occupied the position and we did not even know we would get there.

“But today, we are occupying the positions, who knows who will be there tomorrow? The fact that we don’t know who will be there tomorrow should send a note of caution to us that we must be wary of whatever we do with the positions. What will people remember you for when you are no longer on the position? I am using this medium to urge all and sundry to endeavour to do the right thing.”

Addressing the press after the State Exco Security Council meeting, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Mr. Segun Abolarinwa condemned the attack on the palace of the foremost monarch, describing it as barbaric, condemnable and unacceptable, noting that the suspected hoodlums must have acted on the instructions of some failed politicians who are trying to exploit the traditional institution to stage a comeback and return Oyo State to the inglorious days of violence, brigandage, killings and arson.

The briefing also had in attendance, the Commissioner of Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun, the Governors Special Adviser on communication and Strategy, Mr. Yomi Layinka, the Senior Special Assistance to the Governor on Print Media, Mr. Wale Sadeeq and a Senior Special Assistance to the Governor on Broadcast and Print Media, Mr. Akin Oyedele.

Assuring that, the government shall not allow anyone or group, irrespective of status, religious or political leaning, to take the state back to the days of when Ibadan earned the uneviable tag of a garrison command through the unscrupulous activities of incorrigible elements, Abolarinwa recalled that the government had warned during the installation ceremony of the 21 obas on August 27 that the Olubadan’s palace and the revered traditional institution risk being used as staging post for the nefarious activities of failed politicians.

He said: “The attack on the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His imperial Majesty, Oba Saliu Adetunji, by gunmen on Monday is barbaric, condemnable and unacceptable. The suspected hoodlums must have acted on the instructions of some failed politicians who are trying to exploit the traditional institution to stage a comeback and return Oyo State to the inglorious days of violence, brigandage, killings and arson.

“We shall not allow anyone or group, irrespective of status, religious or political leaning, to take to the days of when Ibadan earned the unenviable tag of a garrison command through the unscrupulous activities of incorrigible elements. I had warned during the installation ceremony of our obas on August 27 that the Olubadan palace and our revered traditional institution risk being used as a staging post for the nefarious activities of failed politicians.

“Meanwhile, we suspect that some opposition political parties and retrogressive individuals must have now found sanctuary in the hallowed palace of the Olubadan to resurrect their faded careers. Their plan is to disrupt the peace and tranquillity that we have worked hard to enthrone and enjoyed in the last six years.

“Initial security reports suggest that their plan is to unleash terror and make Ibadan ungovernable, especially as the 2019 general elections draw near. For the avoidance of doubt, the government wishes to reiterate that it will not renege on its commitment to the security of lives and property which has remained our credential in the last six years.

“We, therefore warn that anyone seeking to tear our resolve through any attempt at jeopardizing the peace of the land should be ready to face the Waterloo because I can assure them that the full weight of the law will be visited on them. My appeal to our Baba, the Kabiyesi, is to be wary of the antics of those who may wish to exploit his warmness and accommodating posturing to foment trouble. A word is enough for the wise.”

  • Eid-el-Kabir: DSS foils terrorists’ attacks on Abuja, Kano, four other states during festival

Eid-el-Kabir: DSS foils terrorists’ attacks on Abuja, Kano, four other states during festival

The Department of State Services (DSS) said it had foiled plans by the Islamic State of West Africa (ISWA) terrorists to attack Abuja and other cities during the recent Ed-el-Kabir festivities.

A statement issued by an operative of the service, Mr Tony Opuiyo, on Saturday in Abuja, said the plans were to conduct gun attacks and suicide bombing on selected targets in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, Niger, Bauchi, Yobe and Borno States.

Opuiyo said the mastermind of the operation was Hussein Mai-Tangaran a well known senior Commander who had been on the radar of the Service and the Nigerian Army since 2012.

Opuiyo said that Mai-Tangaran was also responsible for the deadly attacks against worshipers at the Kano Central Mosque as well as an attack on a military formation in Yobe in 2015, which claimed hundreds of lives.

He said that Mai-Tangaran, an IED expert, had been prepping and priming others for the perpetration of suicide bombing attacks carried out by the group in the past within the North-East region.

He said the suspect was arrested in Kano on Aug. 31 and further exploitation led to the arrest of one Abdulkadir Umar Mohammed on Sept. 2 at Kantin Kwari market in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano.

Opuiyo said Mohammed was a fighter of the sect who left the group in the Sambisa forest to team up with others toward carrying out the attacks being planned by the group.

He said that another accomplice in the plot, one Muhammad Ali, was arrested on Sept. 3, at Sheka area in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.

“Prior to his arrest, Ali was the financial courier of the group in Kano. He was one of the conduits through which funds and other material logistics were channeled to the group from foreign extremist elements/sponsors.

“Like Mohammed, Ali was involved in the plot to perpetuate the planned attacks in Kano and other States in the North during the just concluded Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

In a related development, the service said it had arrested the duo of Yahaya Abacha and Yusuf Mohammed on Sept. 3, in Kano.

“The duo are the leading elements of a cell of the extremist group and have been hibernating and furthering the doctrines of the group in the city.

“They were also to be responsible for operations in FCT Abuja, Kaduna and Niger States,” the operative said.

He said the service had also arrested Abdulkarim Mohammed following credible intelligence report on Aug. 29, in Ajilani Local Government Area of Borno.

” The suspect has been spying on targets in Maiduguri, particularly troops’ deployments/positioning and subsequently passing same to elements of the group in Sambisa forest,” he said

“This Service wishes to thank the general public for its support and cooperation in providing useful information on criminal and terrorist elements in their domain.

“The Service also wishes to reiterate its stance that no matter how long, every perpetrator of violence and criminality against the Nigerian State and its law-abiding citizens, shall be made to face the full course of justice,”Opuiyo said.

Confirming the attack, the Chairman of Madagali Local Government Council, Mr Yusuf Muhammed, told newsmen that the attack lasted from 11 p.m. on Wednesday to 3 a.m. on Thursday.

  • El-Rufai condemns attack on senators, journalists, orders immediate investigations

El-Rufai condemns attack on senators, journalists, orders immediate investigations

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, has condemned the attack on the two Senators (Shehu Sani and Suleiman Hunkuyi) from the state and some journalists on Sunday by some thugs.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the violence occurred at the premises of the Nigerian Union of Journalists in Kaduna.

The hoodlums had disrupted a press conference held by the two senators, Messrs Sani (Kaduna Central) and Hunkuyi (Kaduna North); and injured at least one journalist working for Liberty TV/Radio, in the violence that ensued.

According to witnesses, including journalists, the hoodlums numbering over 100 were wielding dangerous weapons and overpowered police officers to unleash the violence.

Having been briefed on the situation, the governor expressed sympathy with the NUJ and the persons that were harassed by the hoodlums,” said a statement signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Samuel Aruwan, Sunday afternoon.

The governor directed that the security agencies should investigate and take necessary action against the hoodlums. The governor also directed security agencies to beef up security at the NUJ secretariat to protect journalists doing their duty.

The media must not be hindered from carrying out their constitutional and professional obligations. The government of Kaduna State upholds the principles of free speech and respects the freedom of expression,” added Aruwan.

Sani had, in the wake of the violence, told newsmen that the hoodlums were sponsored by the Kaduna State Government. He said the press conference was planned to protest “manipulation of the party (APC in Kaduna)” by El-Rufai with whom he has been having running political battle since both officials came to their offices in 2015.

Apart from Messrs. Sani and Hunkuyi, members of the House of Representatives, including Mohammed Soba and Mohammed Usman were also present at the press conference.

Before the violence, Hunkuyi had told Journalists that they were sidelined in the election of the party’s delegates that held on Saturday.

The elected delegates would represent the Kaduna APC during the non-elective national convention of the party

Hunkuyi remarked that as stakeholders, they ought to be contacted and enabling environment provided for them to participate.

The list of the delegates were not known to us. The list was fake. So, we wrote two petitions to the national secretariat and zonal to buttress our grievances.

We hope the national body would look into our complaints and fix another date.”

But the Kaduna APC, in its reaction by the publicity secretary, Salisu Wusono, said the election was “credible, free and fair.”

The party insists on the suspension of Sani, an arrowhead of the bill to review the Nigerian Constitution to allow independent candidacy in elections.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that in his statement on Sunday, Aruwan did not respond to Sani’s specific allegations, but warned against political violence and attack on the press.

Politics should not be a desperate game. And desperation should not be visited on journalists or any citizen.

The government of Kaduna State will not tolerate any attempt to muzzle the press and innocent citizens from exercising their constitutional rights,” said Aruwan.

The Commissioner of Police for the State, while addressing Journalists, after the violence which ended only when he arrived, said the hoodlums would be arrested.
