Three security operatives, not 20 killed during bandits attack on Zamfara – Police

The Zamfara State Police Command on Saturday denied that about 20 security operatives had been killed by bandits along Shinkafi road.

Earlier reports had it that the security operatives, mostly personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and local vigilantes, had been ambushed by a group led by notorious bandit leader, Turji.

In a statement signed by spokesperson, Mohammed Shehu, the Command confirmed the attack but said only one police and two civil defense personnel had been killed in the ambush.

“What happened was that, on 28th October 2021, Joint Police/Civil Defence Operatives deployed along K/Namoda – Shinkafi Road to stem the tide of banditry, kidnapping and other heinous crimes were ambushed by suspected armed bandits who came in large number,” the statement said.

“The operatives who were always at red alert engaged the hoodlums to an extensive gun duel that lasted for hours. Some of the assailants were neutralised while others escaped with possible gun shot wounds. Unfortunately, a Police Operative and two (2) Civil Defence Personnel paid the supreme price and their corpses were evacuated and buried accordingly.

“The Commissioner of Police while deploying reinforcement of Police Tactical operatives to the area, reiterates the continuous commitment and resilience of the Police to rid the State of all activities of criminal elements.”

The Command urged the public to “ignore the outrageous number” of the earlier reports and “continue to be security conscious while going about their legitimate business.”

  • UN decries global attacks on schools, says dangerous trend must stop

UN decries global attacks on schools, says dangerous trend must stop

UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday call on the global community to say with one voice that “attacks on schools must stop’’ and that schools be safe for schooling.

Guterres made the call at a virtual event to commemorate the International Day to Protect Education from Attack globally celebrated on Sept. 9.

“Schools must be places of learning, safety and peace,” he said, lauding education as not only providing knowledge and skills but also transforming lives and driving development for people, communities and for societies.

Nevertheless, he added, “year after year, this fundamental right comes under attack”.

The top UN official encouraged the participants to imagine being a child in a classroom eager to learn, or a teacher dedicated to shaping the minds of the next generation.

“Now imagine the horrors inflicted by conflict on learning”, he said, painting a picture of schools being targeted, destroyed – or used for military purposes – and of children facing violence, exploitation, even being recruited to fight – simply because they want to study.

The secretary-general cited the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack.

He revealed that between 2015 and 2020, over 13,000 reports of strikes on education, or the military use of educational facilities, had been recorded around the world.

“And this threat is not lessening, as the horrifying events in Afghanistan are showing us so starkly,’’ he said.

Guterres reminded that these were not numbers on a page, but thousands of individual lives and individual futures.

“The loss is incalculable,” he stated.

The UN called on all countries who had not yet done so, to endorse the Safe Schools Declaration – an inter-governmental political commitment to protect students, teachers, schools and universities, from the worst effects of armed conflict.

Endorsed by 111 States to date, the Declaration outlines concrete steps for governments to protect schools and learning.

“We urge Member States to go beyond their commitments under international law and put in place national policies and laws that protect schools and learners,” the UN chief said.

He flagged the need to “hold perpetrators accountable” by making attacks on schools “unacceptable and punished” in every country and jurisdiction, the world over.

The UN chief called for increased global support for the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), who are “working around the clock” to protect education, students, teachers and schools in some of the most dangerous places around the world.

“While great strides have been made in recent years, more must be done to protect the right to education for all,’’ he said.

“As Secretary-General of the United Nations, I am proud to stand with you in this important effort, because when we protect education, we protect the future,’’ he said.

  • Bandits kill four, abduct several others in fresh attacks on Zamfara

Bandits kill four, abduct several others in fresh attacks on Zamfara

Armed bandits have invaded Ruwan Doruwa district in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, killing four persons and abducting several others.

A source at Ruwan Doruwa community said the bandits came to the town in the early hours of Friday and started shooting sporadically, forcing many residents to flee for their safety.

He said the bandits killed four persons and embarked on house-to-house search for abduction.

According to reports, the funeral prayers of those killed been been conducted.

Meanwhile, neither the police authorities nor the Zamfara State Government have confirmed the latest attack.

The attack on Ruwan Doruwa is one of the latest acts of violence by armed bandits operating in the North-West.

The North-West and Central states have for years been troubled by tit-for-tat attacks and community raids between nomadic herders and local farmers who clash over water and land.

But violence has escalated sharply with the emergence of large criminal gangs who steal cattle, raid and loot villages and kidnap for ransom.

President Muhammadu Buhari, a former soldier first elected in 2015, is under pressure over insecurity.

The armed forces have launched military raids and air strikes on bandit camps, but gunmen have kept up attacks and abductions.

Four states across the northwest, including Zamfara, have introduced restrictions including limiting motorbike traffic, restricting fuel sales and also suspending cattle markets and transport.

Armed gangs often arrive on motorbikes during their abduction attacks and also engage in castle rustling.

They operate out of camps hidden in forests in northwest Nigeria, often raiding and abducting in one state and crossing back with their victims into another state.

This year bandits have turned their sights on schools, seminaries and colleges across the region, herding children and students deep into forest hideouts while they negotiate ransom payments.

Many students have been released only after spending weeks or months in captivity but dozens are still being held.

  • IPOB distances self from alleged planned attacks on journalists in South East

IPOB distances self from alleged planned attacks on journalists in South East

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has described as fallacious statement credited to one Petrus Obi, alleging plans by the group to attack journalists in the South East.

The group explained that it had nothing against the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and would continue to support and defend them, stressing they have been on the side of truth.

In a statement from the Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB urged the public to disregard the statement which it alleged was sponsored by the Nigerian Government and enemies of Biafra.

The statement reads in part, “The attention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been drawn to the fallacious statement credited to one Petrus Obi, against IPOB concerning NUJ in the South East.

“We want to make it clear that IPOB has nothing against NUJ and will support and defend NUJ because they have been on the side of truth regarding the atrocities of Fulani herdsmen, bandits and terrorists in Nigeria.

“IPOB can never resort to attacking NUJ in southeast because journalists are not our problem, rather they are partners in progress. IPOB remains the most peaceful freedom movement in the world today but detractors and enemies are trying to potray IPOB in bad light to demonise our hard-built images across the world.

“We reiterate that IPOB is a friend of NUJ, and will never take any action injurious to their interest. Importantly, IPOB is peace-loving and committed to Biafra restoration.

“The fabricated and fallacious statement from Petrus Obi against IPOB should be ignored and disregarded. We are aware that he is sponsored by the wicked Nigerian Government and enemies of Biafra who are not happy with the reportage of pro-Biafra groups by journalists.

“Petrus Obi has been in loggerheads with his people in the village as well as NUJ. He now was to get cheaper popularity by attacking IPOB but we will not dignify him with a response.

“We therefore, caution him to retrace his steps and stop dragging IPOB into his NUJ politics. He is too little to contend with IPOB.”

Three killed as gunmen launch separate attacks in Kaduna LG

No fewer than three people have been killed and several others injured in separate attacks by gunmen in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The incidents which occurred on Friday at Machun and Manuka villages followed the killing of five persons in Zangon Kataf earlier in August.

Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs in Kaduna, Samuel Aruwan, confirmed the latest incident in a statement.

The gunmen were said to have invaded the two villages and started shooting sporadically and in the process, killed three residents while several others were injured.

Aruwan said police personnel responded to a distress call from Machun village and raced to the scene.

On arrival, he explained that the security operatives were also alerted by gunshots from neighbouring Manuka village.

The commissioner, however, said the assailants had fled the area where three lifeless bodies were found before the arrival of the police team.

He disclosed that an unspecified number of victims were also injured in Manuka and have been taken to a hospital for treatment.

In his reaction, Governor Nasir El-Rufai condemned the fresh attacks in Zango Kataf and prayed for the repose of those who lost their lives.

Recall that on August 8, at least five persons were killed in separate attacks by gunmen in Zango Kataf.

Among those killed during the sad incidents was a 10-year-old herder.

The attacks occurred around the Maduachi Forest and the Kurmin-Masara area along Bakin Kogi in Atyap chiefdom in Kaduna State.
