    Police re-arraign Evans for alleged kidnapping, attempted murder

    The convicted billionaire kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly called ‘Evans’, was on Thursday re-arraigned before a Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, for alleged kidnapping and attempted murder.

    Evans was re-arraigned alongside Joseph Emeka, Victor Aduba, and Linus Opara, before Justice Ibironke Harrison.

    The Lagos State Prosecution Counsel, Mr H. Owokoniran, arraigned them on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, kidnapping, and attempted murder.

    The case started denovo after the case file was transferred from Justice Adedayo Akintoye the initial trial judge.

    Justice A. Akintoye was handling the trial at Igbosere part of the high court, before it was burnt during the October 2020 #Endsars saga.

    At the resumed hearing on Thursday, Owokoniran said the state had to re-arraign the defendant because of fresh facts at the desposal of the prosecuting officer.

    Owokaniran, said that the defendants committed the offences on Sept.7, 2015, at 7th Avenue, Festac Town, Lagos.

    According to him, Evans and his co-defendants allegedly kidnapped one Chief James Uduji and collected a ransom of 1.2 million US Dollars.

    He alleged that the defendants attempted to murder the victim one Donatus Nwoye, by shooting him on the hand.

    The prosecution said that the defendants also  shot one Jereome Okezie on his hand and head.

    According to the prosecution, the offences contravene Sections 230, 271 (3) and 411of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The defendants again pleaded not guilty to the charges and the judge adjourned trial until May 3.

  • Burna boy risks jail, if ….

    The Lagos State police command has said popular musician, Domini Ogulu, known as Burna Boy, would be invited for questioning over the shooting incident at Cubana Nightclub in Victoria Island.

     

    Burna boy would be invited following his involvement in the incident that led to the shooting at the Nightclub.

     

    Policemen attached to the singer on Wednesday opened fire in the club following a disagreement with other clubbers.

     

    It was alleged that an argument ensued between Burna Boy and a man whose wife he allegedly made indecent advances to.

     

    All five policemen have been arrested and detained on the instruction of the Inspector-General Alkali Usman.

     

    Force spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmne that Burna boy’s name featured prominently in the shooting incident.

     

    He said IGP Usman had directed Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, to investigate and apprehend anyone linked to the incident.

     

    According to him, the police would also investigate why the singer had five operatives with him at the time.

    Adejobi, who issued a statement confirming the arrest of the policemen, said: “The police personnel identified in the shooting incident at Club Cubana in Victoria Island, Lagos on Wednesday, June 8, have been taken into custody and are being investigated for their involvement in the incident.

     

    “The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, described the circumstances surrounding the incident as unbelievable and unfortunate.

     

    “The IGP has directed the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Abiodun Alabi, to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter and forward his report as urgently as possible for further action.”

     

    A Twitter user @Theflowolf confirmed the altercation, saying, “My guys came to Nigeria from England and USA for a wedding. I invited them out to Club Cubana. A petty altercation with Burna Boy’s people arose because of a woman.

     

    “The next thing bullets started flying. One got scraped in the head by a bullet and the other one got shot in the leg.

     

    “When we rushed him to the Naval Medical Center they said they had no blood and he needed three pints of blood.

     

    “Two soldiers offered to give a pint of blood each which was then used to stabilise him.”

    Fani-Kayode’s ex-wife docked for alleged attempted murder

    Precious Chikwendu, was on Monday docked in a Federal High Court (FHC), Abuja for attempted murder of her former husband, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode,

    The police charged before Justice Inyang Ekwo with attempted culpable homicide .

    In a charge number: FHCABJ/CR/1/2022 filed by the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), against Ms Chikwendu and three others, the ex-wife was said to have attempted to stab Fani-Kayode with a kitchen knife on Nov. 24, 2018 at Asokoro, within the court jurisdiction.

    Others arraigned alongside Precious include Emmanuel Anakan, Prisca Chikwendu and Osakwe Azubuike as 1st, 3rd and 4th defendants respectively, while other are said to be at large.

    In a 13-count charge dated and filed on Jan. 7, the defendants were also alleged to have committed offences bordering on cybercrime, intimidation to kill Fani-Kayode by use of Internet, threat to kill one Lauretta in order to cause her to leave her relationship with Fani-Kayode.

    They were alleged to have criminally used internet to send abusive messages with intent to bully, defame and harass her ex-husband.

    They were alleged to have fabricated false evidence by deposing to series of affidavits that Chief Fani-Kayode physically and sexually assaulted members of his domestics staff in inhuman conduct by causing same to be electronically published in a national daily.

    Chikwendu was also alleged to have, through her Facebook page, referred to Fani-Kayode as “Mr Short Fuse,” and that on Dec. 7, 2021.

    She was alleged to have published a false imputation against the ex-minister “by referring to him as a person who is sexually incapacitated and that he is not the biological father of the four children she had for him as a wife.”

    The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to all the counts, which are said to be punishable under Section 392 of the Penal Code, among others.

    The prosecuting counsel, John Ijagbemi, who prayed the court for a date to commence trial. said seven witnesses would testify in the matter.

    He said apart from the documentary evidence that would be tendered, electronic evidence had also been compiled to prosecute the case.

    Alex Ejesieme, SAN, counsel to the ex-wife (2nd defendant), urged the court to admit the defendants to bail based on the earlier administrative bail granted them by the police.

    “Did you give them administrative bail?” the judge asked.

    “Yes, we did my lord, with two sureties,” Ijagbemi responded.

    Justice Ekwo, who fixed April 27, April 28 and April 29 for trial.

    He ordered the defendants to continue on the terms of administrative bail earlier granted.

    He directed the prosecution to submit all particulars of the defendants to the court registrar.

    In an interview shortly after the sitting, Ijagbemi said the complainant would amend the charge to include an attempt by Chikwendu to kill the four children she had for the ex-minister.

    “Because there are facts available to us that the 2nd defendant (Precious Chikwendu) attempted to kill her own children which we will bring to court in the next adjourned date,” he said.

    However, effort to talk to Ejesieme, lawyer to the ex-wife, was unsuccessful as he refused to grant interview.

    Chikwendu, who was accused of infidelity by the former minister, was also said to have withdrawn various civil cases filed against Fani-Kayode.

    Although the duo had parted ways, the former minister said Chikwendu had always been given access to her children under closed supervision due to her alleged mental challenges which could result to hurting the children.

    The former minister had also alleged that Chikwendu stopped calling the children on telephone for about seven months now contrary to her habit in the past.

    NAN reports that the ex-wife’s arraignment in an alleged defamation of character suit filed against her by former Senator, Mrs Grace Bent, on Jan. 24, before Justice Obiora Egwuatu of FHC was stalled due to her absence in court.

    Chikwendu, an ex-beauty queen, was neither in court nor any lawyer represented her and the judge fixed March 10 for her arraignment.

    Brazilian player charged with attempted murder for attacking referee

    A Brazilian soccer player, has been charged with attempted murder for brutally kicking a referee in the head during a lower league game in the south of the country.

    The player, William Ribeiro of Sport Club Sao Paulo, attacked the referee after he awarded a foul against him during a league game away to Guarani on Monday.

    The game was halted for 14 minutes into the second half while referee Rodrigo Crivellaro was taken to hospital. He was later released.

    “I decided to charge the lad with attempted murder because in my perception of the case, he took the risk of (inflicting) a lethal outcome,” the officer in charge of the case told Brazilian portal UOL.

    The attack took place on Sport Club Sao Paulo’s 113th anniversary.

    The club called the incident “one of the saddest in its history” and said it had summarily fired Ribeiro and was examining what further action it might take.

    The small club from Rio Grande 320km south of the state capital Porto Alegre, play in the second division of the Rio Grande do Sul State championship.

    Monday’s match was halted and restarted a day later with Guarani winning 1-0, the state football federation said.

    Police officer dismissed for attempted murder in Lagos

    The Police Command in Lagos has dismissed and ordered prosecution of one Sgt. Eze Aiwansoba for firing at, and attempting to kill his lady friend, Joy Ndubueze.

    The State Police Command’s Spokesperson, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement that the incident happened on Oct. 8, at Salvation Road, Opebi, Ikeja, Lagos.

    The affected policeman was attached to the Special Protection Unit, Base 16, Ikeja at the time of the incident.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, ordered for a room trial of the suspect where he was found guilty and recommended for dismissal.

    “The approval for his dismissal was contained in a letter numbered PC. 458465/LS/DFA/2, dated Feb. 2, 2021.

    “After his dismissal, Ex-Sergeant Eze Aiwansoba, was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for prosecution via letter numbered AR:3100/LS/SPM/Vol.2/311, dated February 3, 2021,” the statement read.

    CSP Adejobi said in the statement that the Director of Public Prosecution recommended that the ex-police sergeant be charged for attempted murder.

    He said the suspect was subsequently charged to Yaba Magistrates’ Court on Feb. 9, adding that the CP had vowed to punish any erring police officer.

    “The State CID had written a letter to the Director of Public Prosecution, Lagos State, for legal advice which was eventually replied.

    “It noted that the sergeant should be charged to court for attempted murder, contrary to Section 230, Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    “The ex-sergeant was charged to Magistrate Court, Yaba, on Feb. 9, 2021 with attempted murder of Joy Ndubueze and the case is still on,” he said.

    The CP assured the public that no erring police personnel would go unpunished as the command will not condone any act of criminality and unprofessionalism in all areas, it said.

    BREAKING: Court remands two for attempted murder of Governor Oyetola

    An Osun Magistrates’ Court sitting in Osogbo on Wednesday remanded two female in Ilesha Correctional Facility for alleged attempt to murder Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.

    The two identified as Suliyat Tajudeen (20yrs) and Ayomide Abdulazeez (20yrs) were charged for conspiracy, attempted murder, malicious damage and burglary.

    The Police Prosecutor, ASP John Idoko, informed the court that Suliyat, Ayomide and others at large on the 17th day of October 2020, at about 4:30pm did conspire among themselves to attempt killing Oyetola by firing guns and throwing stones at him.

    He added they unlawfully damaged seventeen vehicles in the Governor’s convoy.

    They burgled Justrite Mall to steal laptops, mobile phones and phone accessories valued at N3,568,000 million belonging to Ashiru Ibrahim Olayemi.

    However, the two accused person pleaded not guilty to the five- count preferred against them by the police.

    Their counsel, Nurudeen Kareem, made an oral bail application for his clients assuring the magistrate to provide reliable sureties.

    However, the prosecutor opposed the bail application by the counsel saying, if they are granted bail, they will run away because the accused persons know that the police has overwhelming evidence against them.

    The Chief Magistrate, Dr Ayilara remanded the two accused person to Ilesha Correctional Facility and adjourned the case to November 20, 2020, for ruling on bail.

    Swears in 13 Local Government Caretaker Committee Chairmen

    Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has directed the re-appointed Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Mr Emmanuel Aguma (SAN) to ensure the conclusive prosecution of Former Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr Chidi Lloyd over the attempted murder of a member of the State Assembly, Mr Michael Chinda.

    Governor Wike also directed the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice to ensure the conclusive prosecution of Mr Ojukaye Flag Amachree who is standing trial for the murder of a citizen of Asari Toru Local Government Area during one of the rerun elections.

    According to him, anybody who commits crime in the state must face the full weight of the law.

    Governor Wike spoke on Saturday after swearing-in the reappointed State Attorney General and Commissioner and 13 Caretaker Committee Chairman of Local Government Areas.

    He said: “The Attempted Murder of a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly must be conclusively prosecuted by the office of the Attorney General.

    “Also, the person involved in the murder of a citizen of Asari Toru Local Government Area during the rerun elections must be conclusively prosecuted. Nobody is above the law.

    “I don’t know how the person who was almost killed on the floor of the Rivers House of Assembly will feel seeing his assailant moving around freely? How will the family of the murdered Asari Toru Local Government Area citizen feel knowing that the alleged murder suspect is roaming freely without conclusive prosecution “.

    The governor charged the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice to ensure that all the victims get justice in accordance with the tenets of the law.

    He advised the Attorney General to sustain the enthronement of the rule of law to avoid a situation where people resort to self help on account that the state cannot prosecute criminal offenders.

    On the newly sworn-in Chairmen of Caretaker Committees of Local Government Areas , Governor Wike advised them to concentrate on the maintenance of security and environmental sanitation.

    He advised the Local Government Chairmen to work with security agencies to address security challenges in their respective local government areas.

    He warned them against the mismanagement of council funds for personal benefits or to influence top government officials or their families.
