Auchi Poly SUG election: No student killed – PRO

The Management of Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi Edo, has said that the institution did not record any death during Saturday’s Student Union election.

The Director, Public Relations Division of the institution, Dr Angela Egele, said this on Thursday at a news conference.

Egele dispelled the claims that two students lost their lives during the exercise. She described the claim as false, misleading and unfounded.

“The attention of the management of Auchi Polytechnic has been drawn to a statement credited to Mr Peter Obi, where he alleged on his X handle that two students died and several others injured during the election.

“The management categorically states that these claims were false, misleading and completely unfounded.

“The polytechnic management notes that it is quite disheartening that a notable public figure, like Mr Peter Obi, could make such public statements without proper verification of the information.

“For the avoidance of doubt, no student was shot at or killed during the election, which was declared inconclusive due to observed irregularities,” Egele said.

She also said that the video circulating through the social media, where students were running for their lives, were mostly doctored.

She said that security agencies were on ground to monitor and ensure the safety of lives and property during the election.

The PRO urged the general public to disregard the misinformation about the SUG election.

She further said that the management of the institution remained committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for students and staff of the institution.

Auchi Poly grants amnesty to 4 repentant cultists

The Auchi Polytechnic in Edo has granted amnesty to four repentant cultists.

Dr Salisu Umar, the Rector of the polytechnic made this known on Wednesday, while addressing the repentant cult members.

Umar urged the students of the institution to renounce their membership in cults.

The former cultists renounced their membership of secret cult groups at a renunciation programme organised by the management of the polytechnic in Auchi, Edo.

”Renouncing cultism means abandoning reckless lifestyle and evil ways, adding that no good thing comes from the devil.

“Auchi Polytechnic in a bid to establish zero tolerance for cultism has organised this renunciation programme.

“This renunciation programme is a kind of amnesty to enable staff and students who are cultists to renounce membership of such cults.

“After the renunciation programme, any staff or students who  gets involved in any cult related activities, will face appropriate penalties and punishment,’’ the rector said.

The fight against cultism, he said, is a collective one.

“Churches and Mosques are not left out in the fight against cultism, they should also establish strong youth departments and programmes where youths can be mentored regularly, “he said.

He urged other students who didn’t want to publicly renounce their memberships to do.

Earlier, Mr Daniel Osita, who gave his testimony as a renounced cultist, commended the students for renouncing cultism.

”By this decision  you have opened positive doors to your futures,” he said.

He advised the students to be mindful of the decisions they make in life, pointing out that choices made by humans in life either makes or mar their future.

Auchi polytechnic expels 40 students over result falsification

At least, 40 students of Auchi polytechnic in Edo State have been expelled over result falsification and deficiency at the point of entry into some programmes at the institution.

This was disclosed by the Management of the polytechnic in a news bulletin of the Information and Public Relations Unit of Auchi Polytechnic on Wednesday.

According to the bulletin signed by Adebola Ogunboyowa, the students were expelled following the outcome of the regular verification exercise for the 2020/2021 academic session.

Ogunboyowa explained that the affected students were involved in forgery and falsification of their results to gain admission into the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes.

He pointed out that the expelled students cut across different departments in the polytechnic.

Ogunboyowa hinted that the Rector of the institution, Dr Salisu Umar, had proposed 12 new programmes to commence in the 2022/2023 academic session.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the new programmes include Printing Technology, Welding and Fabrication Technology, Procurement and Supply Chain Management, Library and Information Science Taxation, Leisure, Tourism Management Technology and Social Development.

Others are Microfinance and Enterprise Development, Computer Engineering Technology, Economics and Development Studies, Agricultural Extension and Management and Crop Production Technology.

Ogunboyowa explained that the idea was in line with the Rector’s commitment to reposition the polytechnic and make it enviable in the nation and beyond.

“In pursuit of the Rector’s vision, 12 new programmes at both National Diploma and Higher National Diploma are proposed for resource inspection by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). Ten of the proposed programmes are for the ND level while two are at HND level,” Ogunboyowa said.

She said the institution is set for re-accreditation of all programmes in the polytechnic, adding that the management had improved on the existing infrastructure and procured necessary equipment to ensure that no programme is denied accreditation.

Ogunboyowa noted that the Rector urged all Deans of School and Heads of Departments scheduled for various stages of accreditation to put in their best to compliment the management efforts. (NAN)
