PDP denies purported audio of Atiku, Okowa, Tambuwal planning how to rig

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied a simulated audio recording purported to be the voices of its Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and two others planning to rig the elections.

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba in Abuja on Friday, called on Nigerians and the international community “to utterly disregard the simulated audio“.

Ologunagba described the purported audio claimed to be the voices of Abubakar, his running mate, Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa and the  Director-General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, Gov. Aminu Tambuwal, as “another pathetical fabrication“.

He alleged that the fake audio recording was evidently part of the design of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which recruited hackers to produce and circulate fake media materials.

He said the aim was to demonise the PDP and its candidate before Nigerians, ahead of the polls.

“From the manipulated sound speed and pitch, it is clear that the recording was computer-created and simulated to blackmail our leaders and deceive unsuspecting members of the public.

“It is laughable for the APC to want Nigerians to believe that Abubakar, Okowa and Tambuwal who know themselves, can be calling their own names in a conversation as heard in the fake audio recording.

“Such further betrays the recording as an amateur simulation work,“ Ologunagba said in the statement.

He said the attempt to fool Nigerians by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to clone and mimic the voices of the PDP leaders had failed.

He said that Nigerians were smart enough to detect the distorted wave forms and sound pitch that typify an AI-simulated speech.

“The fact is that no matter how hard falsehood attempts to thrive, the truth will always prevail,“ he said.

Ologunagba said that PDP was ready for Saturday elections and would not be deterred or distracted by such audio manipulation.

He urged security agencies to take urgent steps to track down the makers of the fake audio material and make them face the wrath of the law.

  • I enjoyed being ‘audio’ governor- Makinde

I enjoyed being ‘audio’ governor- Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde on Friday instated seven reappointed commissioners and charged them to work harder to further develop the state.

He said the names of the remaining commissioners would soon be made public.

The governor said this in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary Taiwo Adisa, on Friday.

He said detractors would always continue to have something to say but said his administration would not relent in executing various projects that would have positive impacts on the people of the state.

The governor equally urged the reappointed commissioners to explore more new ways to deliver on their mandate and positively touch the lives of the good people of the state.

The governor said, “I remember that over a year ago, they said everything we were doing was audio. Then, I actually enjoyed being the ‘audio governor.’ For me being audio, they are acknowledging the visuals and by the time we are done, they will understand that we have set a new bar on governance.

“I was recently talking to a brother-governor and he said to me that, first, they called you audio. Now, they are saying we are seeing what you guys are doing. But then, they ask if those things are sustainable. We have sustained payment of salaries for our workers and pensioners in the state for over two years. So, they will constantly be shifting their position until they have nowhere else to shift to.”

He equally added that the new commissioners would all need to play their parts in ensuring that emphatic and service-oriented leadership becomes the norm in the state, saying:

“The people of Oyo State will no longer be dragged down to the days of mediocre leadership. You all have a role to play in ensuring that ‘emphatic’ leadership becomes the new normal in Oyo State and, by extension, Nigeria because the whole country is watching. We should not relent but keep raising the bar.”

  • 2019: Plans by opposition to break APC with malicious audio won’t work – FG

The Federal Government has said the deliberate release of an audio in which the Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, allegedly criticised President Muhammadu Buhari will not break the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, stated this while speaking with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.

Amaechi is the director-general of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.

Mohammed said, “The opposition is determined to ensure the ongoing campaign for the 2019 elections is not based on issues but on mudslinging.

What is the point in shopping around for audio clips or publications that are then maliciously edited out of context? Why do they think this will break our ranks in the ruling party?

What advantage do they think they can get from this infantile act? Whoever wants to circulate any audio or video clip should do so in its entirety so the people can understand the context. Otherwise, let them continue wasting their time circulating an audio that is clearly designed to blackmail.”

    IG’s tenure elongation

Speaking on controversy around the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, whose tenure will expire on January 15, Mohammed said the President “is at liberty to extend his tenure.”

He also said the planned protest by the opposition would not be enough to stop the President from excising his power.

The minister claimed that former Presidents extended the tenures of former IGs.

He said, “When you are drowning, you grab any floating object you can find. You even grab at straws. That’s what the PDP is doing with the issue of the IGP’s tenure.

In the first instance, it is the prerogative of Mr President to extend or not to extend the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police or any service chief. That prerogative cannot be taken from Mr President on the altar of paranoia by some people.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in his time, extended the tenure of Mr Sunday Ehindero as IGP. Was there no opposition party then? Also, in his time, President Umaru Yar’Ardua extended the tenure of Mr Mike Okiro as IGP, heavens didn’t fall.”

He added, “I have read that some opposition parties are planning a series of nationwide protests on the issue of IG’s tenure. That’s purely within their right in a democracy. And I wish them the best of luck.”

    Zakari’s controvercies

Speaking on INEC’s appointment of Mrs Amina Zakari as head of the commission’s Collation Centre Committee, Mohammed described the opposition’s reaction to it as nothing but sheer hysteria, which he said would result from a pathological fear of impending political doom.

He said, “Her role is limited to overseeing the physical structure, that is the International Conference Centre, which is the collation centre for the presidential election. The cries of the opposition amount to red herring.

In targeting Mrs Zakari, the PDP has forgotten that she was appointed in their time. If she was found worthy then, what has changed now?

Ahead of the 2019 elections, the PDP has complained against the IG, INEC chairman, Mrs Amina Zakari, etc., the party is blaming everyone but itself for the sorry state in which it has found itself.”

Why Buhari appointed Tinubu to head campaign

Mohammed also said President Buhari would not want his work to be affected by campaign, and decided to hand over the responsibility of steering the campaign to a former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

He said the action was within the President’s prerogative and a mark of the confidence he reposed in the former governor.

He said, “Concerning the mischievous insinuation from the opposition that PMB handed over the campaign to Asiwaju because he cannot withstand the rigours of electioneering campaign, this is absurd.

The President’s daily schedule over the past months is more rigorous than any electioneering campaign.

Of course, it has never happened in the recent history of Nigeria that a President facing re-election will rather concentrate on his job rather than his campaign. PDP, for one, cannot fathom this because of their brand of do or die politics. Again, the President deserves commendation, not condemnation, for that decision.”

Mohammed also denied the PDP’s allegations that the ruling party was planning to use the Operation Python Dance launched by the army to rig elections.

The truth is that the PDP, in its time, used the security agencies to rig elections after elections. It is therefore not a surprise they are afraid that the APC might do the same. We do not rig elections and we do not use security agencies to rig elections. We are APC, not PDP.”

  • Disregard audio of Magu speaking about Fayose dying in custody – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed an audio clip of its Chairman, Ibrahim Magu saying nothing will happen if former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose dies in its custody.
The former governor has been in custody of the anti-graft agency since he turned himself in on Tuesday.
In a post on its Twitter page, the EFCC urged members of the public to disregard the audio, describing it as false.
The post reads: “#Alert The EFCC alerts the public of an audio recording currently circulating in the social media in which Acting EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, purportedly made comments to effect that nothing will happen peradventure Ayo Fayose, ex-Ekiti governor dies in custody.
“Interestingly, the audio tape did not disclose the place where the conversation occurred and the person that Magu was supposedly talking to.
“Members of the public are advised to disregard this disingenuous creation an handiwork of mischief makers intent on distracting the EFCC from the serious work of wrapping up the investigation into the corruption allegations against Fayose.
“The audio recording is fake as the comments did not emanate from the Chairman of the EFCC.
“Purveyors of this fake news especially a former spokesperson of a leading political party are warned to desist,” tweeted EFCC.

  • Follow footsteps of Fayose, own up to audio recordings – APC tells Gov. Wike

Follow footsteps of Fayose, own up to audio recordings – APC tells Gov. Wike

The Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, said it received with satisfaction the confirmation by Gov. Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State that the telephone discussion clip between him and Gov Nyesom Wike published by Saharareporters is authentic.

“Gov Fayose’s only grouse is that it was allegedly recorded and leaked by the Department of State Services [DSS], an accusation he is yet to provide the evidence.

The APC finds Gov. Fayose’s position very significant in several aspects. The most important significance of that admission is that even among criminals, some level of honour especially in telling some truth and owning up to the obvious are necessary” the APC said in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Senibo Chris Finebone.

The opposition party in Rivers State recalled that when the audio recordings of Gov. Wike’s conversations with his people on rigging the last December 10 rerun elections surfaced in public space, the governor rather than own up and raise other issues about the clips chose to discredit them even if they were as clear to the deaf and dumb as could be.

According to the statement, the APC expected Gov. Wike to take advantage of the panel set up by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris to help unravel what happened during the elections including the authenticity of the alleged audio recording clips and his many accusations against security agencies, INEC and our party. Instead the governor defiantly announced that he and the Rivers State Government would not cooperate with the IGP panel – something that tend to suggest that the governor has a lot to hide.

The APC notes that having been unsuccessful in discrediting the audio clips Gov. Wike decided to deflect attention from himself and the criminal nature of the clips by setting up his own panel to investigate events surrounding the last December 10 rerun elections in Rivers State.

The APC and its leadership believed that the decision by Gov. Wike to set up a parallel judicial panel on the December 10 rerun elections, as laughable as it appears, is not only to conceal his malfeasance in the rerun elections but to attempt to pin contrived wrong doings on his political opponents, a move doomed to die on arrival.

The APC reminded Gov. Wike that while immunity shields him from prosecution, it does not protect him and indeed any governor from investigation. He must know that immunity has expiration date and that day must come.

The APC also called on Gov. Nyesom Wike to tow the line of his Man Friday, Gov. Ayo Fayose and recognise that even among thieves some level of honour is necessary.

“He should own up that the audio recording of him is authentic instead of continuing to live in denial. Better still, the governor should take advantage of the IGP panel to tell all he knows about the December 10 rerun elections and possibly exonerate himself instead of the lame attempts at discrediting the clips and accusing APC, INEC, Police, DSS and everyone else” the statement declared.
