  • 1 person dies as Ogun SSG survives auto crash

    The Secretary to Ogun State Government, Mr Taiwo Adeoluwa, was on Friday involved in an auto crash on Abeokuta – Sagamu Road in which one person died.

    Adeoluwa, who sustained some injuries, was taken to the Federal Medical Center, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.

    Mr Clement Oladele, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, confirmed the incident to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta.

    Oladele, who could not immediately say what caused the accident but said the SSG was at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, receiving treatment.

    “The crash occurred around Day Water Man College, close to Kobape, Abeokuta .

    “The SSG is responding to medical treatment and he is about being discharged from the hospital.

    “I actually spoke with him and he is recuperating well,” Oladele said.

  • Kogi senator survives auto crash

    Mr Ahmed Ogembe, the Senator representing Kogi Central on Friday survived an auto crash along the Abuja-Lokoja road on his way to Okene for elections.

    Mr Duke Opeyemi, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Senator, disclosed this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lokoja.

    He said that the accident occurred at about 9 a.m on Friday, at Gegu community in Kotonkarfe LGA of Kogi state.

    NAN reports that Ogembe is seeking re-election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 National Assembly election in Kogi central.

    According to Opeyemi, his bulletproof car somersaulted several times, but the senator and other occupants of the vehicle came out alive and un-hurt.

    The senator expressed gratitude to God for saving his life and that of the people with him.

    He prayed for more of God’s protection over his life, his family and the entire people of his constituents and Kogi state at large.

  • Yahaya Bello’s wife, aides involved in car accident

    Three Aides of the Kogi State Government on Saturday survived an auto crash along the Obajana-Kabba road on their way to Isanlu for the APC women’s rally.

    This was announced in a statement by Mr Onogwu Muhammed, the Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Yahaya Bello in Lokoja.

    According to the statement, the aides are: Mrs Kelechi Ajayi, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Women and Children to the Governor; Mrs Ejura Edward, the SSA on Women Affairs, and Mrs Adesoro Olamide, the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Governor’s wife.

    The government, however, thanked God that the aides all came out unhurt and were in perfect condition.

    “In appreciation to God Almighty for His faithfulness to the New Direction family, the Kogi State Government wishes to announce that three aides of Gov. Yahaya Bello and his wife survived an accident this morning.

    “The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Women and Children to the Governor, Mrs Kenechi Ajayi; the SSA to Governor’s wife on Women Affairs, Mrs Ejura Edward; and the Special Assitant on Media and Publicity to the wife of the Governor, Mrs Adesoro Olamide, were involved in a minor auto accident this morning.

    “The accident occurred around Oshokoshoko village, while on their way to Isanlu for the All Progressives’ Congress women rally but they all came out unhurt.

    ‘“The government appreciates God once again, that all those involved are in perfect condition.

    “The Governor’s wife’s door-to-door campaign train continues with their rally to the western senatorial district, after a successful two-day outing in Kogi East,’’ the statement said.

    APC rally: Four die, six injured in auto crash

    The Police in Jigawa on Wednesday said four persons, including two females, died in two different auto crashes involving APC campaign vehicles in Jahun and Guri Local Government Areas of the state.

    Police Spokesman in the state, Abdu Jinjir, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse that one of accidents occurred on January 21 at about 5:30 p.m., when a driver of a campaign vehicle with registration number MMR 364 AA (Golf 3), lost control along Guri-Hadejia road and hit six children.

    He explained that the vehicle was conveying party supporters to the venue of the rally organized to flag-off the re-election campaign of Gov. Badaru in Guri.

    The spokesman added that three of the children, Maryam Adamu aged four, Habibu Yusif aged nine,and Aminu Abdullahi aged 10, died on the spot, while the remaining three were critically injured.

    Jinjiri said that the driver of the vehicle was arrested by the police as investigation into the case was ongoing.

    He further told NAN that the second accident occurred on January 22 at about 8:15 p.m., along Jahun to Kiyawa road, when the governor’s campaign team was returning Gumel.

    “On January 22 at about 2015hrs, there was a fatal accident along Jahun to Kiyawa road, involving a ford (Focus) vehicle driven by one Abubakar Ibrahim, aged 35.

    “The vehicle, coming from Gumel and heading to Birninkudu, was conveying four female passengers.

    “On reaching Yar Jigawa village mine, the driver suddenly sighted a camel crossing the highway and lost control of his vehicle while trying to avoid hitting the camel.

    “The vehicle somersaulted and, resulting in the passengers sustaining serious injuries.

    “Policemen immediately visited scene and took the victims to hospital for treatment,” Jinjiri said.

    According to him, one Aisha Tahir aged 40 of Birninkudu town died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

    He added that the surviving victims, including the driver, were later referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Birninkudu, for medical attention.

  • New Year Tragedy! 30 die in auto crash in Ibadan

    There was pandemonium on Monday night near Bola Ige International market along new Ife-Ibadan expressway, Gbagi, Ibadan, Oyo state capital about 15 minutes to the new year as 30 reportedly died in a fatal motor accident.

    It was gathered that the victims were crushed to death by an oncoming trailer from Iwo road axis which rammed into the commercial buses by the entrance of the market.

    According to a report by The Punch, accident which occurred around 11:45pm, led to heavy gridlock which saw vehicles enroute Ife from Ibadan stranded for several hours.

    Although, no eyewitness could say if the trailer suffered a brake failure or if the affected buses were parked on the road, sources confirmed that only two people initially survived the accident and many people were taken to a nearby hospital while other passengers were said to have died immediately.

    A Toyota Camry and Nissan Micra cars were also said to have been crushed by the trailer.

    Sources, however, hinted that many of the victims included people going to churches for the cross-over service at Iyana-Agbala and Egbeda Area of the capital city.

    Victims included a pregnant woman, simply identified as Mrs. Funmilayo who was said to be on her way to visit her In-laws; a driver of a bus identified as ‘Orobo Baba Weather’; and many others that could not be identified as of the time of filing this report.

    Confirming the development, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Adekunle Ajisebutu, puts the casualty figure at eleven, while another report obtained from the office of the Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mrs Cecilia Alao, indicated that 12 people died as a result of the incident and their corpses were deposited at the morgue of Oyo State Specialist Hospital, Adeoyo.

    It noted that aside from nine who died immediately at the scene, additional three persons died on Tuesday morning out of the 10 injured victims who were conveyed to Toun Specialist Hospital, Iwo road area for medical attention.

    Giving a witness account, a middle aged man who simply identified himself as Waris Olatunde said that a bus belonging to his boss named, ‘Orobo baba welder’ had loaded passenger at the spot and when it was about to embark on its journey, a trailer enroute Iwo-road from Ife axis crossed the road and wrecked the havoc.

    Olatunde who claimed to be the conductor of the bus that was crushed further said that, he narrowly escaped the incident because the driver of the vehicle (Orobo Baba Weather) paid him N200 and asked him to go back instead of joining his boss on the trip.

    He said, “It was only God that saved me. Usually, I use to collect money for him from the passengers before he leaves the park but in this case he said since it was late already, I should take N200 and leave.

    2019: Eight PDP supporters die in auto crash on way to campaign rally

    No fewer than eight people were feared dead in a fatal accident involving supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State on Friday.

    The accident occurred on Otukpo- Agatu Road in the state while the party supporters were travelling to Agatu for the flag-off of Abba Morro senatorial campaign for the 2019 elections.

    Abba Moro, a former Minister of Interior, is the PDP senatorial candidate for Benue South.

    The accident occurred at about 10 am.

    An eyewitness said the multiple accident occurred when the tyre of one of the buses conveying some PDP supporters burst and it veered off the road.

    Other buses conveying party supporters were then said to have rammed into one another, resulting in the high casualty figure.

    Benue State governor Samuel Ortom and Senator David Mark yesterday visited injured victims at St Francis Hospital in Adoka, Otukpo Local Government Area.

    The accident also forced Abba Morro who is the PDP senatorial candidate to cancel the flag-off campaign scheduled to hold in Agatu, Benue South.

    According to reports, some of the victims were certified dead at St. Charles Catholic Hospital Adoka and deposited at the morgue of General Hospital in Otukpo while injured survivors were being treated in Adoka at the time of filing this report.

    Governor Samuel Ortom, who visited the hospital in Adoka in company with former Senate President David Mark and the Deputy Governor, Engineer Benson Abounu, announced indefinite postponement of the PDP senatorial campaigns flag-off in Zone C.

    The Governor described the incident as painful and unfortunate, saying it was a huge loss to the entire PDP family in the state.

    He also directed the immediate evacuation of the survivors to Benue State University Teaching Hospital Makurdi for further treatment, stressing that cases requiring further referrals outside the state would be handled accordingly.

    Describing the development as unfortunate, Governor Ortom commiserated with the bereaved families and PDP on the loss of their loved ones.

    Senator Mark, who also consoled the affected families, lamented that most of the victims were very promising youths within his senatorial district and prayed God to grant the deceased eternal rest.

    On his part, the member representing Obi/Oju Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon Samson Okwu, described the incident as painful, saying he met with some of the victims yesterday but never knew they were meeting for the last time.

    Two No people were confirmed dead and five injured in a road traffic accident involving a tanker conveying petroleum product and two other vehicles at Shasha Market along Akure-Owo Expressway.

    Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide, Deputy Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo state Command, confirmed the incident to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview in Akure on Wednesday.

    “There was a crash this morning at Shasha Market involving a tanker and two other vehicles.

    “We got information that a tanker had a break failure and hit a vehicle and entered into a filling station while the other truck, in trying to avoid the tanker, ran into an opposite filling station.

    “Two people died at a spot while five injured were rushed to a hospital in Akure.

    “So, we are still doing a follow-up but the obstruction is already cleared and the road is free now,” Ogungbemide said.

    He called on tanker drivers and other motorists to ensure that their vehicles were in good order before embarking on any journey, especially during the yuletide to avoid road crashes.

    “Motorists should try and put their vehicles in order.

    “We have been doing the advocacy for long, that when they get to busy area, they should reduce their speed to the minimum speed limit and have respect for other road users.

    “And, this season, motorists should know that activities on the road are high and they should drive with every cautiousness that it deserves,” he said.

  • JUST IN: Cross River APC chairman, others die in auto crash

    Chairman of the Cross River State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Mathew Achigbe, is dead.

    Achigbe died in an auto crash along Afikpo Road in Ebonyi State in the early hours of Saturday while on his way back from a church programme in Enugu State.

    He was said to have died alongside other yet-to-be-identified occupants in his Toyota Sports Utility Vehicle.

    The state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Bassey Ita, did not pick up calls to his phone when contacted.

    However, the state party Vice Chairman, Mr. John Ochala, said the news came as a rude shock to party members.

    He said, “He went for a Catholic Church programme and was on his way to Obubra when this incident happened.

    He was to meet with the party leaders in Obubra Local Government Area and the leaders were already gathered and waiting in his house when the news filtered in that he had died in a fatal road accident. Everybody is in a state of shock, we cannot make any comment for now.”

    Also, the National Vice Chairman of APC, South-South, Chief Hilliard Eta, confirmed the sad development.

    It is true, we have lost our state chairman. We are very saddened by the loss of our chairman to a car accident on his way back from a Catholic Knight programme in which he was a leader. We are so saddened that we cannot have an official reaction for now.

    Some other people also died in the accident but we do not have the identities of those who died yet. I do not think anybody survived that accident. It is an unfortunate development,” he added.

  • Auto crash claims 2, injures 4 others in Kano State

    Two people died on Tuesday evening while four others sustained injuries when two vehicles collided on Kano-Gwarzo road, an official of Kano State Fire Service said on Wednesday.

    Alhaji Saidu Mohammed, spokesman of the fire service told the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano that the accident occurred at about 05:35pm.

    “We received a distress call from one Malam Wada Alhassan at about 05:35pm that there was an accident on Gwarzo Road.

    “On receiving the information, we quickly dispatched our personnel and vehicle to the scene of the incident at about 05:41pm to rescue the victims,” Mohammed said.

    He said two vehicles, a Truck, with registration number XF 375 FG and a Golf car with registration number KZR 421 ZT, from opposite direction, had collided.

    Mohammed attributed the accident, which involved six persons, to speed limit violation which led to loss of control by the drivers.

    He said the fire personnel took the victims to the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano where the doctor on duty confirmed two dead while the remaining four victims were receiving treatment.

    He appealed to motorists to obey traffic regulations so as to stay alive and minimise accidents on the road.
