Court grant Mohbad’s family to perform second autopsy

The magistrate court sitting in Ikorodu, Lagos state has granted the family of the late singer Mohbad request to conduct a second autopsy.

It would be recalled  that the singer’s family had expressed dissatisfaction with the initial autopsy results, which were deemed inconclusive.

The 27-year-old singer died under controversial circumstances on September 12, 2023, and was immediately buried the following day.

However, after several calls from the public to ascertain the cause of his death, his body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH.

His family, however, rejected the result of the autopsy over its failure to reveal the cause of death. And she pleaded with the coroner’s inquest’s presiding magistrate to ensure that an independent toxicology report is submitted to the court before the final report is submitted to the authorities.

However, during a hearing on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, Ikorodu magistrate court granted Mohad’s family and their legal representatives permission for a second autopsy.

  • Lawyer writes NASS, demands autopsy on late Police Inspector, Peter’s body

Lawyer writes NASS, demands autopsy on late Police Inspector, Peter’s body

Lagos based Lawyer, Ohemu Boni, has petitioned the National Assembly, over the mysterious death of Inspector Sunday Peter.

Late Inspector Peter was a Police Officer, attached to the ‘Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos Police Command, before he was murdered.

In a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio and Speaker, House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; Barr. Boni expressed the disappointment of the family over the role played by the colleagues of the Late Inspector, calling for thorough investigation, to ascertain the real cause of Peter’s death.

The petition which was received on Friday at Senate President’s and Speaker’s offices, was also copied to the Chairmen of Committee on Public Petitions of both chambers.

“The Late Insp. Sunday Peters, on the 16th May, 2024, in the normal course of active duty, went on a patrol with his team members along Falomo, Ikoyi, Lagos State and he was hale and healthy.

“Our client, Mr. John Peter, a brother of the late officer said he was called on his GSM phone about 7am on 17th May, 2024 in the morning, and was asked if he is the deceased officer’s brother, which he answered in the affirmative and was told that his brother is dead. Our client made effort to know the cause of his brother’s death but nobody was giving any answer.

“It was upon getting to the RRS office that he was informed that his late brother’s body has been taken to the mortuary in Yaba, Lagos. Several efforts made by him to see the body of his brother were rendered abortive, until the RRS Commander later permitted him to go and see his late brother’s body.

“It is pertinent to state that, the only information supplied to him officially at the RRS Office is that, his late brother complained to his colleagues of uneasiness and he was taken to the Police Hospital, Falomo, Lagos, that he walked to the hospital himself and eventually died”, the petition read in part.

The Lawyer suspected fowl play in the manner in which the late gallant Inspector died and how his colleagues deposited the corpse in the morgue before informing the family.

He averred that, Inspector Peter was already death before taken to the hospital and, contrary to the position of the Police that he was ill, a discreet investigation at the mortuary revealed that the late Inspector was murdered.

Barr. Boni said, “However, our client who reviewed his late brother’s body maintained that, there were bruises, cuts and blood on the deceased’s body, hence, his team members have more information they are concealing as to the cause of the late officer’s death. Find attached, copies of photographs showing our client’s late brother’s body.

“Following the above stated facts, the entire family of Peter Ogoyi as well as the deceased’s immediate family have been thrown in disarray as the mysterious death of Late Insp. Sunday Peter has caused them, especially the aged father, serious pains, trauma and pangs”.

The petitioner therefore, craved the indulgence of the Honourable House and the Senate, “to wade into this matter and cause the Inspector General of Police to direct that a discreet investigation be conducted and an autopsy examination of the deceased body done, to ascertain the real cause of death”.

Meanwhile, a source close to the family hinted our correspondent that, the Police authority in Lagos State was secretly discussing with the wife of the deceased, who is also a Police personnel of Edo State origin, to hurriedly bury the corpse in Inspector Peter’s home town, Otukpa, Benue State next week; against the wish of the family.

“As we speak, the Commissioner of Police has sent out signal and the police have printed posters and commenced burial arrangements to hurriedly bury our brother, against our wish.

“Because they know the wife is not from our place and she is a Police woman, they decided to cajole her to allow them bury her husband like a chicken.
“We are from Otukpa. We are Idomas and our tradition doesn’t allow such burial until we know the cause of the death of our brother. If not, it would lead to more deaths. We won’t allow that to happen. The Police should come out and tell us what and who killed our bread winner. We won’t take it,” the source stressed.

UNICAL suspends 4 staff over students death

The University of Calabar has suspended four staff of the institution’s medical center over the death of Ms. Precious Agindi.

Agindi, a third-year student of the institution at the department of Library and Information Science, died on Jan. 28 at the institution’s Medical Center.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, on Tuesday briefed newsmen after receiving the autopsy report.

She said that the staff were placed on the suspension for showing lack of “emotional commitment” to the deceased.

Obi said that the autopsy gave a detailed cause of death of the student who was brought to the medical center at a very critical state where she died in less than an hour later.

“For emphasis, let me categorically state that the death of Ms Precious Agindi had nothing to do with the rumoured ruptured appendicitis as her appendix was found at autopsy to be healthy, not inflamed and intact.

“This regrettable incident sparked very strong emotions, students’ demonstrations on that fateful day and a lot of misinformation and outright falsehood peddled by ill-informed and mischievous people, both within and outside the campus.

“Regrettably, the lies that have been deposited in the public space, conscientiously or unconsciously, as amplified by social media, have had a damaging impact on the reputation and image of our university that my administration is working very hard to protect.

“Management chose not to join issues with peddlers of falsehood at a time of deep sadness and sober reflection.

“These persons without cause hastily blamed the death on the Medical Centre and by extension the university,” she said.

She noted that the university maintained studied silence and strongly investigated the handling of the patient at the facility by constituting a panel of inquiry as well as carrying out a Coroner’s Inquest to determine the cause of death.

“This, we are sure will serve a great purpose in the future, for understanding the causes of things is one of the callings of the university.

“As I addressed protesting students on campus that fateful day, this much I promised we would do.

“In fulfillment of this, with the full approval of the family of the deceased, we ordered an autopsy which was carried out by one of the foremost Nigerian Forensic Pathologists.

“We are thankful to God that our late student was peacefully laid to rest on Feb. 11, 2023 in her hometown, Gbe Nanav in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.

“Yesterday, in the presence of the representatives of the family, the Benue and Tiv Community in the University, SUG officials, members of the Panel of Inquiry, Management received the Autopsy and the panel of inquiry reports.”

She said that the late student never went to the university medical center but was only taken there by her friends in a very critical medical condition the day she died.

“Please note that Ms Precious had received treatment from other private clinics in town from the scan result and other medications presented to the nurses on duty when she was brought in.

“The panel of inquiry made up of experienced medical consultants and doctors absolved the nurses on duty of any professional negligence but saw elements of lack of emotional commitment as medical professionals.

“While life and death are both in God’s hands, management of the university strongly believe that it is our responsibility to do our best at our respective duty posts to offer the service of care both professionally and emotionally considering our quest for excellence as an academic institution.

“It is on this note that management feels that medical personnel in our medical center must give not just professional services but emotional and psychological services which are more soothing especially when one is on a sick bed.”

The VC noted that the problem of commitment to work in the University of Calabar was a pillar that the institution gives great value in all its sections, including the Medical Centre.

“Management has, therefore, decided to place all the staff on duty on a 3-months suspension for lack of empathy and psychological support and especially for demanding for money for card against the medical center policy of attending to patients in critical condition first.

“The above investigation has revealed, that the patient was brought to the Medical Centre critically ill and her eventual death shortly after arrival was not as a result of professional negligence by staff of the medical center.

“Also, there is an established clinical condition as cause of death which in deferment to the family and in respect to the dead we do not wish to reveal.

“Yet all sorts of lies have been told both online and offline to batter the image of the University and instigate unrest among the students,” she said.

Autopy report reveals Insp. Orukpe died of multiple injuries

Two autopsies carried out on late police Insp Monday Orukpe of the police command in Lagos State have revealed that the officer died of assault, multiple injuries and blunt force trauma.

The autopsies were conducted by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and the Nigerian Army Cantonment Medical Centre, Ojo.

The reports were made available to newsmen by the widow, Mrs Favour Orukpe on Thursday.

On Aug. 3, some soldiers from Ojo Cantonment allegedly clashed with some policemen controlling traffic in the area, leading to the death of Orukpe.

The autopsy from LASUTH signed on Oct. 27, 2022, by Dr O.O. Onayemi of the Department of Pathology and Forensics revealed that multiple injuries and blunt force trauma caused Insp Orukpe’s death.

Blunt force trauma, also known as non-penetrating trauma refers to injury to the body by forceful impact, falls, or physical attack with a dull object.

The Nigerian Army’s autopsy report signed by Dr I. Agueze revealed that primary cause of death was assault, while secondary cause of death was head injury.

Mrs Orukpe had alleged that her husband had not been buried because of the delay in the release of the autopsy reports and the Nigerian Army’s investigation report.

She said that though the autopsy reports were now released, the Nigerian Army was yet to release its investigation report to determine who the culprits were.

Acting Deputy Director in charge of Public Relations at 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Olaniyi Osoba, said the joint committee of the Army and the police investigating the case was still sitting.

Osoba said that the investigating team had gone far in its assignment and was probing all issues surrounding the incident, administratively.

He said the report would be out when the committee concluded its findings.

Orukpe: Army report, autopsy delay burial of Police inspector – Wife

Mrs. Favour Orukpe, the widow of Insp. Monday Orukpe, allegedly killed by some soldiers in Lagos, says her husband has not been buried due to delay in the Nigerian Army’s investigation report.

Orukpe said that the non-availability of an autopsy report carried out by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Ikeja, had also contributed to the delay.

She said that the corpse was taken to LASUTH about a month ago and the hospital promised that within two weeks, the result would be out.

Chief Medical Director of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, said he had carried out the autopsy.

“I have investigated. The Autopsy has been carried out and the report will be given to the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) on Friday,” he said

NAN reports that on Aug. 3, some soldiers from Ojo Military Cantonment allegedly clashed with some policemen controlling traffic in the area.

Orukpe’s widow reiterated her demand for justice from the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and the Inspector-General of Police (I-GP).

She said that her husband died on duty while serving the nation, adding that the COAS and the I-GP should not allow his service to the nation to go to waste.

“I want justice. I want them to take care of my four children, because I can’t do it alone.

“I am sending this message to the COAS and I-GP because my husband died on duty assigned to him wearing his uniform,” she said.

The late Orukpe was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on May 1, 2002 and he rose to the rank of a Senior Inspector before his death.

The widow said that though the family was willing to do the burial, it had no money to carry it out.

She added that the family had also agreed with the police on where to bury her husband.

The Lagos police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, however, said that the police were always responsible for the burial of their personnel.

He explained that paper work of the deceased by his family might have delayed such fund from being released.

Hundeyin said that the earlier the deceased family started processing the papers from the division to the command pension unit before moving to Force Headquarters Abuja for final approval, the better.

In his reaction, the Acting Deputy Director in charge of Public Relations at 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Olaniyi Osoba, said the joint committee of the Army and the police investigating the case was ongoing.

Osoba said that the investigating team had gone far and was probing all issues surrounding the incident, administratively.
