  • Baba Suwe: Travails of a jester battling for survival

Babatunde Omidina, known as Baba Suwe, is a successful comedian better known for his exploits in Yoruba home videos. Amazingly, he is still arguably the most popular Yoruba comedian of his time.

Sadly, Baba Suwe who has made a career out of making people laugh hasn’t had so much to giggle about in recent times.

    The Genesis

His travails began when On October 13, 2011, news of his arrest by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on suspicion of being in possession of hard drugs made the rounds on the internet which lead to a fierce legal battle. The sad incident created a major dent on his reputation.

TheNewsGuru recalls that actor,Paul Obazele condemned the act describing it as “tarnishing and one that will not do the image of the industry any good.”

“We are disappointed, it’s annoying. I’m short of words, Baba Suwe is an icon and everybody looks up to him in the industry’, Paul Obazele said, while adding that “it is not good news at all”, Obazele said in a chat with newsmen.

Baba Suwe later took the NDLEA to court, won and was awarded N25 million in compensation for the wrongful arrest. He is yet to get the compensation eight years later.

The incident led to a decline in his career as he was hardly featured in movies. Comic actors like Mr Latin, Olaniyi Afonja (Sanyeri) Afeez Oyetoro (Saka) Ayanfe Adekunle (Monsuru) Tunde Usman (Okele) Adekola Tijani (Kamilu Kompo) Tayo Amokade (Ijebu) emerged on the scene making many pay less attention to the veteran comedian.

Accused of killing his ‘Omoladun’ his late wife in 2009

TheNewsGuru, TNG recalls that one of the greatest scandal that rocked the career of Baba Suwe was allegations that he killed his late wife, Monsurat Omidina (Omoladun) who was an actress during her lifetime.

Baba Suwe’s step daughter, Omolara Kareem brazenly accused her stepdad of having a hand in her mother’s death. She noted that he had brutally fought her mother the night before her death. However, Baba Suwe debunked the claim.

In an interview with Vanguard, he said: It has not been easy but life must go on. I believe whatever happens has been pre-ordained. The death of Omoladun was a great loss I cannot get over in this lifetime. She will remain my best companion. She understood me than any other person on planet earth. At times when we quarrel in the house, she would abuse me on set and that would mark the end of the issue”.

Without going into details, his present condition is getting critical to the previous state when I first raised alarm. I am again putting my all before the world to please help him. Time is of the essence. People around him are really trying but trust me on this, the situation is bigger now. He needs urgent comprehensive medical treatment”.

TheNewsGuru, TNG had reported that the popular comic actor’s health is waning. The respected comedian is currently suffering from chronic diabetes.

Popular actor, Bolaji Amusan a.k.a Mr Latin has reacted to the viral claims that the Yoruba sector of Nollywood has abandoned Baba Suwe.

Mr Latin who also doubles as the National President of the Theatre Arts and Motions Pictures Producers Association of Nigeria, TAMPAN, said the association has been taking care of Baba Suwe’s medical bills since 2017.

Mr Latin made this known in Abeokuta on Monday, February 18, 2019.

  • Baba Suwe sick, health waning-Media personality declares

Baba Suwe sick, health waning-Media personality declares

The shocking announcement came through a media personality who prefers anonymity. He matter of fact stated: The health of the comic popularly known as “Baba Suwe’’ is deteriorating. Real names: Babatunde Omidina. He is seriously sick.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG, recalls that a few years back, Baba Suwe was arrested by NDLEA at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, on his way to a foreign trip, on allegation of drug trafficking. He was kept in custody for days but was later released after days of screening his his excreta. He was exonerated when it could not be proved that any incriminating evidence had been found.

The Yoruba comic actor was to later approach the courts for the restoration of his fundamental human rights; and for adequate compensation. The court found in his favour and he was granted general damages of N25 million against NDLEA.

When TheNewsGuru.com, TNG, enquired about what the ace comedian had done with the money to warrant his being financially strapped to the extent that he could not fund his medicals, we were told that the money is yet to be paid by NDLEA.

Our media personality contact who broke the news also noted that no one among Baba Suwe’s friends and professional colleagues was willing to help solve his health challenge.

In his words, “Baba Suwe is a good man. None of his people can say he is bad. And they are not helping him, not because he behaved badly to them. They are not helping him because they care only about their family.

That’s the nature of our actors; there is no exception. Imagine the caliber of people I told you I had spoken to about Baba Suwe’s case, yet none has looked his way yet.

But if, God forbid, he dies from the problem, they would be all over the place eulogising his qualities which they helped killed by their lack of empathy,” the broadcaster notes.

It will be recalled too that as far back as 2017, Yomi Fabiyi, launched an appeal to stakeholders in the entertainment industry to rally round to rescue Baba Suwe from the undisclosed ailment.

“On Baba Suwe, I am calling on all senior colleagues in the entertainment world especially those close to Baba Suwe because I don’t have everyone’s contact to please reachout to him ASAP (As Soon As Possible).’’ “The torture done on him by NDLEA is vastly damaging his health at an alarming rate. “He told me he no longer feel comfortable since that episode. Baba Suwe is a widower, he can hardly walk properly as I speak, let alone go to film. “How will he feed and take care of the children Aunty Moladun left behind? “This is an A-List Entertainer and this conspiracy of silence gives me MENTAL AGONY on my part, I don’t want to speak when it may be too late, I won’t forgive myself”, he wrote on Instagram.
