Lagos Govt denies salary increase for workers is mere political gimmick

Mr Gbenga Omotoso, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy says the salary increment for the state workers by Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu is not political.

Omotoso, at an interactive session with newsmen on Sunday in Ikeja, refuted some negative insinuations in some quarters that the recent salary increment was nothing but a mere political gimmick to win the forthcoming general elections.

He said that such insinuations were baseless, considering the fact that the state, governed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) since the return of civil rule in the country had been setting the pace for others to follow.

Omotoso said that no matter the percentage of the increment, anyone putting more money in a person’s pocket was doing the person a whole lot of good.

”The governor is saying that we appreciate the service you are providing and despite the fact that things are so hard, you are still carrying on and you are putting smiles on the faces of residents who are coming to government offices.

”No matter how low or high the percentage may be, I think the symbolism is that at this particular time,  the governor feels that workers deserve a raise and he has pronounced it.

”And if you listen to him very well, he said he has instructed the office of the  Head of Service, Establishment, State Treasury Office to come together to look at this and see what the numbers are and see how we can go, but that workers are now going to a pay rise is a forgone conclusion.

”I think the whole world is hailing him for doing that but if people are now saying it is for political reasons, let so many people in position of authority also do so for political reason and raise salary,” he said.

The commissioner said that apart from the salary increment, many projects were currently waiting for inauguration in the state.

He said that the state government had over 30 schools to be inaugurated, and also housing projects, including jetties for inauguration before the end of 2022.

”We are building the infrastructure for the Blue Line Rail system that will take passengers from Marina to Mile 2.

”We also have the Red Line that will convey passengers from Oyingbo to Alagbado, both of them will be ready at the end of this year.

”Few day ago, we saw the trains for the red line arrive at the port, that shows that rail project that we are working on is an alternative and it is a linkage among all models of transportation.

”If you check the records you will see that more people are now using our waterways because they have seen that it is safe and faster.

”We now have more routes and we are also building more water jetties in Badagry, Ikorodu and other divisions of the state,” Omotoso said.

“Olaleye had been directed by the State Government to resume his duty post as the LASPOTECH’s substantive Rector for the next three years and two months remaining for him to complete his tenure,”  Wahab said.

Recall that on Feb. 8, 2022, the National Universities Commission (NUC) stamped the seal of authority on the establishment of two new specialised universities in Lagos State.

  • Why we are raising salaries of workers in Lagos – Gov Sanwo-Olu

Why we are raising salaries of workers in Lagos – Gov Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said he announced a pay rise across all levels for workers in the State’s public service to cushion the effects of inflation, high prices of commodities and the rising cost of living.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Governor Sanwo-Olu announced the pay rise for workers in the State’s civil service while addressing the workers at the State secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja on Tuesday.

“Earlier today, I announced a pay rise across all levels for workers in the state’s public service. We took this decision to cushion the effects of inflation, high prices of commodities and the rising cost of living being experienced across the globe on our workforce.

“With this increase, not only will we expect more from our workers, our citizens must also see the benefits of this decision in the delivery of services. I have directed all the necessary agencies to work out the modalities for upward review and statutory approvals,” Sanwo-Olu clarified.

Speaking while addressing the workers, the Governor emphasized that his administration is proactive to the yearnings of civil servants and that he understands that the high inflation in the country may have affected the purchasing power of workers. He stressed the state will not wait for the federal government before it improves the well-being of workers.

“I have looked around and I know that as a country, there is pressure. I know that, as a country, there is a high level of inflation. At our cabinet meeting, I instructed the head of the service office and the ministry of staff, training, and pensions to start work on how we are going to increase the entire salary of our public servants,” he said.

The governor, however, did not mention the percentage of the increment and when it would kick off, but that modalities were being worked out.

”You have not asked for this one. I have looked around and I know that as a country, there is pressure,  I know that as a country there is high level of inflation. I know that as a country there is high cost of living.

”Last month, at a cabinet meeting, I instructed the Head of Service Office and the Ministry of Establishment, Training and Pension to start work on how we would  increase the entire salary of the public service.

”I don’t want us to be a Lagos of ”Buga”, we want to reflect it in our salary. I am aware of the  pressure on all of you and  the pressure of inflation in the country, we are not going to wait for the Federal government. This is Lagos. We are Lagos.

”We are going to review it. We’re going to ensure that we can indeed take care of our public service. Once we do that, not only will we expect a lot more from you, but the citizens will see the benefit of doing the right thing.

”We don’t want to wait for a union to hold us to ransom, we want a government that is proactive, that will need to reflect on  the yearnings of the people and make that happen,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu also said that the workers in the core establishment duty would receive a 25 per cent duty allowance increment.

He promised that the administration would present 100 brand new cars to some of the  directors in the civil service, starting from the end of October.

The governor thanked the workers for supporting his administration, urging them to do more to serve all residents.

”I am one of you and part of you. The support I have received from you has been unprecedented. I appreciate the support you have given my government.

“The future is bright and there is nothing too much for us to do as a government,” he said.

In his welcome address, the Head Of Service (HOS), Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola thanked the governor for fulfilling the promises he made to the workers when he first visited them in 2019.

Muri-Okunola said that Sanwo-Olu had fulfilled 80 per cent of the promises he made to the workforce.

Reeling out some of the achievements of the governor, the HOS said 35 new staff buses were given to the workers, prompt payment of staff salaries, international training for workers, among others.

  • 2023 Election: Don’t allow religion to divide us, Sanwo-olu urges Nigerians

2023 Election: Don’t allow religion to divide us, Sanwo-olu urges Nigerians

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has urged Nigerians not to allow religious division, especially in respect to the APC Muslim-Muslim ticket for the presidential poll.

Sanwo-Olu gave the advice on Thursday in Ikoyi, at the 96th Anniversary Lecture of the Yoruba Tennis Club , with the topic: ”Social Club and the Search for National Cohesion”.

He said that electing the next President of Nigeria should be about leadership, character, audacity to think and ability to think deep and solve problems.

According to him, the election of the right persons is not about religion, as there is nothing in the issue of a Muslim-Muslim Ticket of the APC Presidential candidacy.

“I am a Christian and my wife is a Christian but we know too well that it is not about religion.

“We have forgotten that in 2011, when Action Congress at that time gave a platform to Malam Nuhu Ribadu and his vice presidential candidate then was Mr Fola Adeola.

“It was a joint Muslim-Muslim ticket and we did not see any problem at that time.

“But suddenly, because there is a likelihood of this ticket emerging as a winner, people now want to divide us. We will say no because that is not who we are.

“It is about leadership. It is about character. It is about audacity to think. It is about the ability to be able to think deep and solve problems.

“We do not want to despair other candidates. We all know too well what their antecedents are. We all know too what their credentials are. But we know that as a nation, we need a strong launch pad. We need to think out of the box and be able to put our best foot forward,” he said.

The governor commended the leadership of the Yoruba Tennis Club for making the right choice of inviting the APC Vice Presidential candidate, Sen. Kashim Shettima as the guest speaker.

“We are celebrating 96 years now and let it be on record that by 2026 during our centenary celebration, by the grace of God, we will have Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu coming here to celebrate as President on our centenary.

“By your grace and your support, I will still remain as your 15th Governor, coming here and celebrate in four years time and all of you will be here.

“We deserve the presidency. In Lagos we deserve it. Lagos requires it and it would be by the grace of God a bigger, better and stronger nation and state that all of you would be truly proud of to have been part of,” he said.

While delivering his lecture, the Vice Presidential candidate of the APC, Sen. Kashim Shettima, said that there had been so much talk about the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the party.

Shettima said that Sen. Tinubu is a Muslim but his wife is not only a Christian, but a senior pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God as well.

“Some of Asiwaju’s children are Christians. How can you convince someone that Asiwaju is going to Islamise Nigeria when he did not Islamise his own family?,” he said.

  • Lagos to test run Blue Line rail mass transit service in October

Lagos to test run Blue Line rail mass transit service in October

Lagos State will test run mass transit service on the 27-kilometre Blue Line rail line following completion in October, the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Sano-Olu made this known as the race to the completion of the Blue Line Rail received a boost with the launch of the last track beam (T-beam) of the rail track on Wednesday.

Sanwo-Olu witnessed the historic moment and personally flagged off the engineering procedure held at the site of the iconic Marina station of the rail project.

With the laying of the final T-Beam, all difficult civil works standing in the way of the Lagos Blue Rail Line, which started in 2012, have been overcome. The contractor – China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) – will now go ahead to set the rail tracks along the alignment and move the project to completion.

Sanwo-Olu, again, committed the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and the contractor to the December deadline for the Blue Line project’s completion.

Lagos Government will be delivering two rail mass transit projects within the first term of the Sanwo-Olu administration. The Blue Line, which traverses between Mile 2 and Marina, will be operated on Electric Motor Unit (EMU); the 37-kilometre Red Line, from Agbado to Ebute Metta, will operate on Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

Speaking at the launch of the last T-Beam on the Blue Line, Sanwo-Olu said the achievement signposted his administration’s commitment to bringing succour to Lagosians and give them choices in mass transportation.

The Governor said the rail projects represented the audacity of his administration’s vision to deliver a robust integrated transit system as encapsulated in the Traffic Management and Transportation pillar of his Government’s T.H.E.M.E.S. development agenda.

He said: “Today’s final T-beam launch indicates that we are gradually inching to the completion of the civil infrastructure for the first phase of the Blue Line traversing from Mile 2 to Marina. The engineering work today completes a total of 1,967 piles foundation, while we have also completed three 306 platforms, 310 piers, 267 cover beams and erection of 984 T-beams.

“We are not just making promises; people are beginning to see for themselves that all the milestones and the difficult tasks we are meant to achieve to ensure operation of the Blue Line are being achieved. The Marina Station, which is the iconic terminal for the Blue Line, will be completed within two-and-half months. I am restating here that we will formally complete this Blue Line before December 31, 2022.”

The Governor said the two sets of EMU coaches already procured for the Blue Line operations would arrive in Lagos from China before the end of October. He said the rail line would be test run immediately after completion, while passenger movement would start within the first quarter of 2023.

Sanwo-Olu said the construction of the second phase of the Blue Line project would commence after the start of operation, which would extend the rail project from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko. He said Blue Line stations would be built at Festac, Alakija, Trade Fair, Volkswagen, LASU and Okokomaiko. The Governor disclosed that talks were being held with the Ogun State Government for possible extension of the rail line to Agbara.

He said: “The second phase of the Blue Line project will be an easy infrastructure to develop because the marked alignment for stations and tracks are largely at grid level. While we are at this, the Red Line is also on the way. This is a start-and-end project for our administration, with about seven stations concurrently being built. This will redefine mass transportation in Lagos.

“To our citizens, I say the Blue Line is for real and you will ride on it in no distant future. For the Doubting Thomases and people that do not like our face, their eyes cannot disbelieve in the infrastructure we are bequeathing to the citizens of our State. They cannot disbelieve in our bold effort and commitment to improve mobility and deliver transport infrastructure that brings ease to our people.”

LAMATA Managing Director, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, said the first 13-kilometre stretch of the Blue Line construction was divided into four phases to enable the government fund the project from its internally generated revenue.

To get to the current status, she said the construction work experienced disturbances and delays in the relocation of submarine cables, submarine natural gas pipelines, and removal of underground shipwrecks.

“Just as we are laying the final T-beam for the rail tracks, we are also currently retrofitting the train stations at Mile 2, Alaba, Iganmu and National Theatre with light in readiness for passenger operation in the first quarter of 2023,” Akinajo said.

CCECC chairman, Mr. Liu Wei Min, described the event as the most significant level of the project.

He said: “We express our sincere gratitude to the present administration under the leadership of Mr. Sanwo-Olu in reaching this milestone. We will continue to work to meet the ultimate target in delivering the entire project with high standards and quality.”

The T-beam laying event was also attended by Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Mr Chu Mao ming.

We will vote against those who say Rivers don’t matter – Gov Wike

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has declared that anybody who despises the political capability of the State will be meted with the same treatment, stressing that the State will vote against those who say the State does not matter.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Wike made the declaration at the inauguration of the Orochiri -Worukwo (Waterlines junction) Flyover that was performed by the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu in Port Harcourt on Monday.

The Rivers State Governor explained that the dynamics of contemporary politics has made it unpopular to just gift votes away without the assurance of derivable benefit for the people.

“If you say Rivers State does not matter, Rivers State will tell you that you don’t also matter at the appropriate time. If you don’t like us, we will not like you. If you like us, we will like you.

“Nobody will use our votes for nothing. Our votes will matter and Rivers State must benefit from anybody that we are going to support.

“Politics now is no longer just vote for somebody, it is about what you will do for the people of Rivers State,” the Governor said.

Governor Wike pointed to how difficult it will be for any conspirators to upset the voting pattern of Rivers State and support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The Governor reiterated that those who looted the treasury of the State will not be supported to become Governor of Rivers State.

“My guest from Lagos State, let nobody tell you story that anybody will come here to win as Governor of Rivers State. It will not happen.

“Those who looted the treasury of the State will not come here to be Governor of Rivers State and I have challenged them.

“I am fully in charge. I am not that kind of Governor people will go to Abuja and hold meetings against. I am fully in charge here,” he said.

Governor Wike also berated Mr. Yemi Adebowale for his ThisDay publication titled, ” Wike, a Governor Possessed By Spirit of Flyovers.”

“First of all, let me state, if there is one State that pays salary regularly, it is Rivers State. Let me also state, every month we pay pensioners. Let me also state since we have been paying gratuity, have you been hearing anybody talking on radio?

Governor Wike also challenged those who are envious of his development strides to rather show what capacity they have by executing projects and invite renown persons to inaugurate them.

He explained the invitation of the Lagos State governor is not the first time persons of other political parties were invited to inaugurate projects in Rivers State.

He pointed to the overall benefits such invitations have on governance because it served as peer review for them.

The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, who inaugurated the Orochiri-Worokwu (Waterlines) Flyover, commended Governor Wike for his strong commitment to the delivery of physical infrastructure in Rivers State.

“I would like to specially commend my brother, Governor Wike, for his strong commitment to the delivery of physical infrastructure in Rivers State, a commitment that has been recognized by all and sundry, and which has earned him the appellation of “Mr. Projects” within and outside Rivers State.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu said though himself and governor Wike belong to different political persuasions, the invitation extended to him sends a very strong message that politicians and political leaders, can come together across political and ideological divides, for the good of the people.

“There is also a strong message being made today about expanding our capacity to play politics without bitterness. This symbolic gesture by my friend and brother is one that should become standard practice across Nigeria.

“There is also a lot that we can learn from one another, and experience that we can translate from one part of the country to the other.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu further added: “Ultimately, we are all in governance to touch the lives of the people for good; to deliver to them the dividends of democracy. There is no doubt that Governor Wike has spent his last seven years focused on this, just as we have similarly been doing in Lagos.”

Providing the description of the project, the Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Dakorinama George-Kelly said the project has been completed on schedule with specified quality.

“The project has an overall length of 840 meters and overall cross sectional width of 17.6meters, 7.3 meters on each lane. It has 1 meter walkway on both sides, and 2 meter of media. We have a total of asphaltic pavement area of 29000 square meters.

“This flyover bridge brings to amend traffic congestion along the Port Harcourt -Aba Expressway because right from the Bori Park Flyover down to Eastern By-pass, there will be no traffic congestion. So, there will be ease of doing business around Port Harcourt and Rivers people will benefit from it.”

In his speech, Regional Manager of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, Juergen Fischer, noted that history had been made with the opening for public use the 7th Flyover awarded to them for construction.
He thanked Governor Wike for the trust reposed in Julius Berger Nigeria PLC to handle such huge projects for the State Government.
