MURIC frowns at Lagos APC for endorsing governor Sanwo-Olu

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has frowned at the endorsement of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his second term bid.

The director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola issued a statement on Monday to express his displeasure with the Governor’s second term endorsement

All Progressives Congress (APC), last week, endorsed the incumbent Governor of the State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for a second term in office for the 2023 gubernatorial election.

MURIC through the statement argued that the endorsement violates the long standing unwritten rule on rotational governance between Muslims and Christians in Lagos state.

He said the Christians have had their two terms and it is the turn of Muslims to produce a governor by 2023.

According to him, “It is on record that ex-Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, a Christian, spent four years in office and another Christian, Babajide Sanwo-Olu was brought in ostensibly to complete the Christians’ two terms which expires by May 2023 when a Muslim, ceteris paribus, is expected to take over the reins of office.

“That is why Muslims in Lagos State regard the recent endorsement given to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to run for the Christians’ third term as unfair, unjust and provocative. It may not be known in official circles, but Lagos Muslims are grumbling and we have been under pressure for some time now to speak up,” he said.

The MURIC director stated that the body rejects exclusivism in matters of governance, adding that the laws should have been adhered to.

“Lagos Muslims are tax payers and key stakeholders in issues affecting the welfare of Lagos citizens. We must, therefore, be consulted on matters of governance.”

“We refuse to be blindfolded on the way to the polling booth. Neither shall we be satisfied just as voters, we must also be voted for. That is the essence of democracy. It must be participatory. The choice of candidates and leadership must not be lopsided in a democracy. Every segment of society must be consulted,” he added

  • What Tinubu, Fayemi, Sanwo-Olu, Ooni said about demise of Alaafin of Oyo

What Tinubu, Fayemi, Sanwo-Olu, Ooni said about demise of Alaafin of Oyo

A former Governor of Lagos State, Sen. Bola Tinubu, has described the death of the Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, as an auspicious era in the ancient Oyo Kingdom, the Yoruba and the entirety of the black race.

Tinubu in a condolence message on Saturday in Lagos, said that the late Oba Adeyemi was a strong pillar of the arts, culture and tradition.

He said: “Kabiyesi took upon himself the task of promoting Nigerian arts and culture for which he received many ambassadorial awards in Nigeria and beyond.

“In recognition of his important contributions to peace, religious harmony and stability in Nigeria, the nation gifted him the high honour of Commander of the Federal Republic.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential hopeful expressed sadness at the passing of the late Oba adding that with his transition, a big Iroko had fallen.

Tinubu recalled that his last encounter with Oba Adeyemi was during his last visit to his palace sometime in February to seek his prayers and blessings for his presidential ambition.

“l had an abiding personal relationship with Alaafin whom I deeply respected. He was a Mentor, leader and father figure.

” I visited Kabiyesi in February in Oyo to seek his prayers and blessings which he graciously gave, little did I know it was the last time we would see each other face to face,” he said.

Tinubu noted that Alaafin was one of the most influential, greatly respected traditional rulers in Yorubaland, Nigeria and indeed Africa and beyond.

“Alaafin fostered harmony and brought prosperity and development to the ancient Oyo Kingdom.

“He was loved by his people. Wisely ruling on the throne for 52 years, he became the longest reigning Alaafin that ever ruled Oyo Kingdom.

“An elder-statesman and patriot, Alaafin Adeyemi was bold and courageous. He spoke truth to power.

“His interventions in national affairs helped the nation navigate difficult moments and helped usher a more just society.

“He played vital roles in the struggle for democracy, working assiduously towards the establishment of our democracy,” he said.

The former governor who said that he was deeply touched by the demise of Oba Adeyemi commisserates with his immediate family, the Oyomesi, the chiefs, Gov. Seyi Makinde, the government and the people of Oyo kingdom.

“The black race has lost a titan who will be sorely missed.

“I pray that his family, Oyo Kingdom, the Yoruba race and indeed all Nigerians find consolation and strength in that we must now dedicate ourselves to live up to the ideals for which Alaafin stood,” Tinubu said.

Alaafin, an iconic monarch – Ooni

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has described the passage of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, as a loss to the entire Oduduwa race worldwide.

This is contained in a statement by his Director of Media & Public Affairs, Otunba Moses Olafare, made available to newsmen on Saturday.

Ooni Ogunwusi, who doubles as the Natural Head of the Oduduwa race worldwide, stated that the late Alaafin was a worthy elder whose entire life was dedicated to the promotion of the prestigious Yoruba culture and advancement of humanity.

“We have lost a great icon, a great monarch, who saw Oyo through civilization, and modern development without jettisoning the cultural sacredness of the throne first occupied by Alaafin Oranmiyan The Great.

“Ile Oodua Palace and the Ooni had a great working relationship with the late Alaafin who gave his best in resolving major conflicts in Yoruba land and uniting all sons and daughters of Oduduwa globally among other landmark achievements.

“The late Alaafin is one of the privileged elders that contributed to the growth of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and also saw the country through military and democratic eras with unquantifiable positive inputs,” he said.

Ooni Ogunwusi recalled his last encounter with the late Oyo Royal Father early last month when they both held a closed door meeting of peace and reconciliation with some frontline politicians of Yoruba origin at Ibadan.

According to him, Alaafin made a promise to make his first visit to the Ooni before the middle of the year.

Ooni prayed for the soul of the late Alaafin as well as the family to have the fortitude to bear his death.

He also prayed that Oyo would be spiritually guided to complete the burial of the Royal Father in full accordance with the culture and traditions of their ancestors.

“While the demise of Oba Adeyemi would be greatly missed for his indelible imprint as a great descendant of Oduduwa, the Ooni hereby urges the entire House of Oduduwa worldwide to continue to pray for the deceased’s family and Oyo indigenes at this trying time.

“May the Almighty Olodumare also be with the Oyomesi at this critical time that may challenge the culture and traditions of their ancestors in the process of burial rites and the process of selecting the next Alaafin.

“The position of Alaafin is too culturally important to be handled in a way that undermines our collective traditions and culture.

“God shall solidly stand with the Oyomesi and the entire Oyo kingdom,” the statement said.

Alaafin’s demise, great loss to Nigeria – Sanwo-Olu

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has described the demise of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III (Alaafin of Oyo) as a great loss to Nigeria.

In a condolence message on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Gboyega Akosile, the governor said his death was great loss to the people and traditional institution of Oyo State.

Oba Adeyemi passed away on Friday at the age of 83.

Sanwo-Olu commiserated with the Governor of Oyo State, Mr Seyi Makinde, and the entire Yoruba race both at home and in the diaspora.

‘The late monarch’s service to the people of the ancient town, Oyo State and Nigeria, especially in the area of promotion of Yoruba culture and tradition, will remain his enduring legacy,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu urged the family, friends and associates, as well as the entire people of Oyo Kingdom to immortalise him and ensured the late Alaafin of Oyo’s legacies were sustained.

”On behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, I commiserate with my brother, the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde.

”I commiserate with the people of Oyo State, especially sons and daughters of the ancient Oyo Kingdom over the death of one of the foremost and most respected traditional rulers in Nigeria, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who joined his ancestors on Friday.

”The death of Oba Adeyemi is a great loss not only to the people of Oyo State but the entire Yoruba sons and daughters at home and in the diaspora.

“This is because of the unique position the Alaafin of Oyo holds as a descendant of Oduduwa. He will be greatly missed.

”He was one of the great promoters of Yoruba culture and tradition.

“He contributed immensely to the growth and development of Oyo Kingdom and improved the livelihood of the people of the town.

”As a first-class monarch, he left a lasting legacy that the people of the ancient town will continue to cherish,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu prayed that the Almighty should find a peaceful resting place for the soul of the late Oba Adeyemi and grant the royal family, Yoruba land and the people of Oyo town the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Late Alaafin, bridge builder, courageous leader- Fayemi

Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti has described the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, has a bridge builder, patriot and courageous leader who contributed to Nigeria’s unity during his lifetime.

Fayemi made the assertions in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, on Saturday in Ado-Ekiti.

He said the departure of the revered traditional ruler had created a big vacuum in the traditional institution in Oyo State, in particular and Yorubaland in general.

According to him, the late Oba Adeyemi was an authority in history and blessed with a sharp memory which added value and class to his royal duties and day-to-day interaction with people from different walks of life.

Fayemi, also the Chairman, Nigeria Governor’s Forum, described the deceased as a distinguished first class Oba, who brought dignity, respect and glamour to the traditional institution and made it relevant in the quest for a better society.

He said the late royal father operated an open door policy and always made his wise counsel available to political leaders, irrespective of their party affiliations.

Fayemi while describing the late traditional ruler as a man of many parts, said he never disappointed in the performance of his royal duties and other roles he was privileged to have played, which spanned sectors like administration, politics, education, religious, sports, among others.

He said that Oba Adeyemi earned much respect and accolade for his ability to speak the truth to those in power, without playing to the gallery.

The governor further credited the departed Oba with defending the culture and traditions of the Yoruba race, which he did with panache and passion throughout his reign.

Commiserating with the family, friends and associates of the late oba, Fayemi urged them to be consoled by the good legacies Adeyemi III left behind and the positive impact he made in his lifetime.

“We pray that the Lord will grant the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” he said.

The leadership of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has appealed to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to sustain the peaceful coexistence between the union and state government.

The NURTW National President, Mr Tajudeen Baruwa, in a statement on Friday, thanked the governor for the support he had been giving the union over the years.

“The body’s national leadership appealed to governor Sanwo-Olu, to allow the existing harmonious relationship between NURTW and Lagos State Government to continue and that it will be extended to the newly appointed officers of the union,’ he said.

The president said that the union had inaugurated a nine-man caretaker committee to oversee and coordinate operations of the union across Lagos state.

He said the committee was constituted following the dissolution of the State Administrative Council (SAC).

Baruwa said the caretaker committee was set up to allow for continuity in the administration of the transport activities.

The president added that the move was to ensure that members of the union continued to support the government’s master plan for transport development.

“The nine-man caretaker committee will be led by Mr Fatai Adeshina, a stakeholder in the transportation sector, and the committee will operate for next three months as stipulated in the union’s constitution.

“Other members of the committee are Mr Sunday Yusuf, Abraham Onifade, Jamiu Erinfolami, Ismaila Ojora, Lekan Ariyibi, Murtala Lawal, Taiwo Azeez while Kayode Agbeyangi would serve as the secretary,” he said.

Baruwa said that members of the committee were carefully selected to ensure sanity in the transportation sector.

“The union knows that they will effectively manage affairs of Lagos chapter after SAC dissolution, which was done to bring sanity to the union’s operation across the metropolis,” he said.

The Lagos state government recently appointed an ex-chairman of the state’s chapter of NURTW, Musiliu Akinsanya popularly called MC Oluomo, as the chairman of its Parks Management Committee.

A former Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mr Hakeem Odumosu, was appointed as the Liaison Officer between the government and the committee.

Second term bid: MC Oluomo promises Sanwo-Olu 3 million votes in Lagos

Former chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos State, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya popularly known as MC Oluomo has promised to deliver three million votes to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

MC Oluomo made the promise, following the approval given by the Governing Advisory Council (GAC) for Governor Sanwo-Olu’s second term bid as Governor of Lagos State.

He vowed to deliver the votes from members of the newly inaugurated parks committee and their families.

MC Oluomo’s media aide, Jimoh Buhari, made this known yesterday, hours after the Lagos State GAC gave a nod to the 2023 second term bid of Sanwo-Olu.

Reacting to the GAC’s endorsement of the governor Sanwo-Olu, Buhari, on behalf of his principal, said, “Chairman (MC Oluomo) is very happy for the governor and he has promised the governor that all his members will vote for him.

“He has promised the governor that he is going to deliver three million votes for him because we have over two million members and we have family members as well. So, the governor should be expecting three million votes from us.”

“The governor should continue his good works and by God’s grace, we won’t experience COVID-19 or any other pandemic that will disturb him during his second term. As we know already, even with the pandemic, the governor still performed.

“So, we urge him to continue his good works. We pray for him and the state as a whole that he will perform better in his second term,” Buhari added.

The GAC, which is the highest decision-making organ of the state chapter of the party, and headed by All Progressives Congress chieftain, Bola Tinubu, had in 2018 kicked against the second term bid of the former governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, which led to the emergence of Sanwo-Olu as APC flagbearer in the 2019 governorship election in the state.

Ambode’s predecessors were in office for two consecutive terms. They include Tinubu, who was governor between 1999 and 2007; as well as current Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, who was governor from 2007 to 2015.

JUST IN: APC Governance Advisory Council okays Sanwo-Olu for second term

The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has okayed the incumbent State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu for second term.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Council, which is the apex body within the State APC, approved second term for Sanwo-Olu at its meeting at the State House, Marina.

Sanwo-Olu’s Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile made this known on Monday, adding that the Governor was also given a pass mark for staying true to the developmental agenda of Lagos.

“Breaking news: Lagos GAC gives nod to Governor @jidesanwoolu’s second term bid. The Governance Advisory Council at a meeting in Lagos today gave pass mark to Sanwo-Olu for staying true to the developmental agenda of Lagos. Congratulations dear boss,” Akosile stated via Twitter.

TNG recalls Sanwo-Olu’s predecessor, former Governor Akinwumi Ambode failed to secure a second term in office because he fell out of favour with the party’s structure and GAC members.

This is despite popular sentiments that Ambode performed very well enough in office to deserve a second term.

Meanwhile, Sanwo-Olu was yet to say anything about running for a second term and has not picked his nomination form for the election, apparently waiting for the official endorsement of the party chieftains.

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has assured students of the new Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUST), Ikorodu, of government’s willingness to reduce tuition fees.

Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance on Friday when he stopped at the Ikorodu campus of the university while on his way to the commissioning of the new plant of Kimberly-Clark Factory in Odonguyan area.

Addressing students who came out to welcome him after his helicopter landed at the school of technology car park, the governor said that the government was committed to making the university one of the best universities of choice in Nigeria.

”Great students of Lagos State University of Science and Technology. You are now university students; it is going to work well. We’d continue to do what we’re doing to ensure that you finish well.

”JAMB has put your name (Lagos State University of Science and Technology) as a full university.

”We know you have a small concern about your school fees, we are going to look at it and we are going to bring it down. We are going to be building this university that would be bigger than even LASU very soon,” he said.

It will be recalled that the National Universities Commission (NUC) Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, on Feb. 8 in Abuja, handed over certificates for two new Lagos universities – Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUST) to Gov. Sanwo-Olu.

With the issuance of clearance certificates of operation by NUC, Lagos State University of Education is now the 56th state university and 204th University in Nigeria, as well as the second University of Education in Nigeria while Lagos State University of Science and Technology is 57th state university and 205th university in Nigeria.

The two universities are, in addition to the existing Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, established in 1982 by the first Civilian Governor of Lagos, the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande. Lagos State now has three state-owned universities.

Speaking further at the event, Sanwo-Olu said that the two newly approved state-owned universities would be reference points in academic circle in no distant time.

He said that the operation of the two additional universities would assist in meeting the demands and needs of the teeming youths who are craving for higher education to be future leaders and reference points not only for themselves and families but for the nation.

Sanwo-Olu said converting erstwhile Lagos State Polytechnic to a University of Science and Technology would bring about innovative engineering, science invention and other innovations that are critical to the development of the country and state.

He said that the conversion of Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education and Michael Otedola College of Primary Education into a University of Education was proper and right thing to do, given the demands and the present needs of students.

Sanwo-Olu dropped the hint at the public presentation of a book titled: Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe @60; Audacity of Resilience, on Tuesday in Lagos.

According to him, the development is timely, as it will expand access to the teeming youth who aspire higher education.

He added that the two existing universities in the state were not enough to accommodate the quest for the growing number of youths seeking higher education.

He stressed that education remained the only potent weapon to eradicate poverty and breach all limitations.

According to him, there is also the need to groom future leaders, as well as develop curriculum that speaks to the needs of tomorrow.

“I want to commend the vice chancellor of this university for what he has done in this institution. The records are there for all to see. He has gone through a lot, but that did not stop him from attaining set goals.

“I want to say here today that he is a man coming from a very humble background with so much humility. But that did not limit him.

“For our young ones that are seated here, this book should inspire you to break all bounds and reach out to your goals in life. Do not allow what you face today to limit your aspiration in life.

“It is not how you were born, not where you find yourself, but how well you are able to navigate your way out from any challenge life may throw at you,” he stated.

The governor then noted that the state government would acquire a lot of the books for its schools including the Lagos State University (LASU).

The book reviewer, Mr Martins Oloja, Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, the Guardian newspaper, said the book which is in five parts, comprised of 340 pages with 16 chapters.

He noted that it was well written and edited by academics.

Oloja recommended the book for all, especially those in leadership positions, as well as future leaders.

Also speaking, the editorial team lead of the book, Prof. Obinna Chukwu, said the book is about the sample of opinion of people whose lives Ogundipe had impacted, noting that the true essence of leadership was in the impact any man had on humanity, people, institution and environment.

” All said, the committee of friends looking at him, from the cradle through his career trajectory and ascension to the 11th floor of the Senate building as the UNILAG 12th vice chancellor.

“This is not discounting the turbulent weather, through which his flight is cruising; saw him as the audacious and resilient, thus this book, Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe@ 60; Audacity of Resilience,” he said.

Chukwu, who is also the institution’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, (Management Services), expressed hope that the odyssey on the celebrant would inspire readers to be focused, determined, steadfast, audacious and resilient, while keeping their eyes on the ball.

This, he added, that God ruled in all affairs of men.

In his brief remark, Ogundipe lauded the efforts of the editorial team for their efforts in putting the book together.

He assured of his determination to continue to contribute his quota to national development for the betterment of mankind.

The book was put together by committee of friends of the vice chancellor.

Lagos acquires 10-car speed trains for Red Line project

Lagos State Government has acquired two 10-car Talgo 330kmph speed trains for its Red Line rail project.

The state Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu had on Tuesday completed acquisition deal of the trains at an event inside the Milwaukee facilities of Spanish train manufacturer, Talgo Incorporated, in the U. S.

The trains will be heading for Lagos for the state’s Red Line – a 37km track rail project.

On completion, the Red Line will have 11 stations and move passengers from Agbado to Oyingbo.

Sanwo-Olu said the state government was excited to complete the purchase of the two brand new trains.

He said that acquisition was in line with his administration’s commitment to efficient traffic management and transport system.

The governor was accompanied on the trip by the state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde; Adviser to the Governor on Works, Mrs Aramide Adeyoye; and Managing Director, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Mrs Abimbola Akinajo.

He said that the government officials inspected the trains, saw the configuration and were satisfied that the trains fitted into the tracks of the Red Line.

”A train is not something you can just go on the shelf and pick up. We are very lucky to get brand new trains.

”We have seen our beautiful white and red trains. Coincidentally, the rail line is called Red Line and you can see they have given us the colour.

“We are just going to brand it and put our seal there,” he said.

He hoped that the purchase of the trains would be the beginning of a mutually-beneficial business relationship between Lagos State and the trains manufacturer.

“Providing source of livelihood for our citizens is all about providing jobs for our people and that is what we are doing.

”It is about ensuring that we can build our economy; people can move from one location to another and businesses can grow,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He said that part of what the government had achieved in the last two and half years was Integrated Urban Mass transportation system, in which road, waterway and rail infrastructure would be used to move over 20 million residents within and around the state.

The Acting Milwaukee Mayor, Mr Cavalier Johnson, who received Gov. Sanwo-Olu in the city, said that it was bittersweet to have missed the opportunity to have the trains operate in Milwaukee and in Wisconsin.

Johnson congratulated Gov. Sanwo-Olu on the acquisition of the trains, and hoped that it would ease movements across Lagos State.

The Chief Executive Officer, Talgo, U.S., Mr Antonio Perez, said that it was important that the trains were utilised.

”It doesn’t make any good for the trains that we built to be stored and kept without passengers riding them,” Perez said.

The Lagos State delegation inspected the interior design of the newly-acquired Talgo 330kmph intra-city metropolitan trains.

Since the commencement of his administration on May 29, 2019, Sanwo-Olu has maintained his administration’s commitment to bringing the Red Line dream to fruition.

The governor promised Lagos State residents that the Red Line would begin by the last quarter of 2022 or first quarter of 2023, with a capacity of 500,000 passengers daily.

AFRD: Fallen soldiers made supreme sacrifice for Nigeria’s unity – Gov Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said the sacrifice made by the fallen heroes was supreme and marked the symbol of the nation’s unity.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Sanwo-Olu stated this as he laid a wreath to commemorate this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day at Tafawa Balewa Square in Onikan

He charged members of the armed forces to continue to uphold the fine traditions bequeathed to the military by the departed soldiers.

The Governor said the State had not only honoured the efforts of the fallen heroes by participating in the yearly remembrance, he said Lagos had also catered for the welfare of families of departed soldiers living in the State through various intervention programmes.

He said: “Today, we have come out in honour and in remembrance of fallen members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, who, at one time or the other, had been of great service to our nation and paid the supreme price to keep our unity and security. As a yearly tradition, the State Government comes together with military formations and veterans to commemorate this day in their honour and say that their sacrifices are not in vain.

“This is to continue to encourage the men of the Nigerian Armed Forces and to show them that the country will continue to remember them and ensure their efforts are not in vain. As a Government, we have been supporting our soldiers to keep the territorial integrity of this nation secure, while working with them in the areas of intelligence gathering to ensure Lagos remains safe for our citizens and visitors.”

As Lagos Government supports families of fallen soldiers through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Sanwo-Olu said his administration had not left out military veterans residing in the State in Government’s welfare and intervention programmes packaged for ex-service personnel.

Few days ago, the Governor fulfilled a pledge of N50 million donation to the Lagos Command of the Nigerian Legion, in addition to employing over 5,000 military veterans as security guards across the State-own public schools, hospitals and Government facilities.

He said: “At the State level, we see our ex-servicemen and women as members of our community. We see them as people for whom we have responsibility. We promised we will equip their schools with unlimited Internet access and computers to support their children.

“All of these have shown that we have not abandoned our veterans. We will continue to help servicemen that have retired and create welfare support for the spouses and families of the ones that have departed, because we consider them as major stakeholders in our entire community.”

Other highlights of the event included Islamic and Christian prayers for the souls of the departed soldiers.
