    Sanwo-Olu celebrates wife, Ibijoke as she clocks 55

    Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has congratulated his wife and First Lady of the State, Dr. (Mrs) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, on her 55th birthday.

    Dr. Sanwo-Olu, a medical doctor by profession, clocks 55 years today, Saturday January 8, 2022.

    Governor Sanwo-Olu, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Gboyega Akosile, on Saturday, described his wife as a courageous, amiable and kind-hearted and also, his strong pillar of support.

    He said the First Lady, a thoroughbred medical practitioner who represents the league of the brightest minds and pride of the profession, had touched the lives of millions of Nigerians and Lagosians, first as a medical practitioner and currently as First Lady of Lagos, since his assumption of office on May 29, 2019.

    ”On behalf of the good people of Lagos State, I heartily congratulate my beloved wife, friend and reliable partner of many years, on the occasion of her 55th birthday.

    ”Attaining the age of 55 years in grace, elegance and good health is worth celebrating because of her remarkable contributions to the family, medical profession, Lagos State and humanity,” the governor said.

    Governor Sanwo-Olu stressed further that over the years, his wife and best friend has contributed immensely to the health sector, especially as a medical practitioner in Lagos State Civil Service.

    He said: “You served Lagos State Government passionately for over 25 years, climbing the ladder to become the Chief Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer at Harvey Road Comprehensive Health Centre in Yaba and later at the General Hospital, Somolu.

    “You are one of my back bones and great supporters during the electioneering that brought me into office on May 29, 2019 as the 15th Governor of Lagos State. You contributed and participated in the Health Mission of our campaign train that transversed all the nooks and crannies of the state, especially the grassroots and riverine communities to offer free medical services to millions of Lagosians, particularly the needy and the downtrodden, who couldn’t afford to pay for such health services.

    “Since you became the First Lady of Lagos, you have shown passion and commitment to issues relating to health, women and the girl child. And as women and children advocate, you have been vocal in your campaign against sexual and gender-based violence, especially on issues affecting the younger generations. As the chairman of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), you have also provided leadership for women to support their husbands in public offices.

    “Ibijoke, you are a woman I will continue to cherish and love because of your positive impact in my life, our children, our immediate and extended families and Lagos State. You are a good, caring and loving wife, a compassionate and committed mother to our children.

    ”On this occasion of your 55th birthday, I pray that God will continue to be with you, grant you good health to enable you render more service to our beloved dear State, the medical profession and humanity.”

    2022 Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Sanwo-Olu donates N50m

    Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday unveiled the emblem and appeal fund for the 2022 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, ahead of the Jan. 15 commemoration.

    During the unveiling programme at the Lagos House, Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu donated N50 million to the state chapter of the Nigerian Legion.

    He expressed his administration’s commitment to empower widows of the fallen heroes.

    The governor, therefore, directed the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) to work with the office of the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Legion to identify persons the state could empower and support to within the first quarter of the year.

    ”Every year, we set out to remember our fallen heroes, men and women who served the country, especially on the war fronts. Those who paid the supreme price while serving the nation and it is customary that on January 15, we remember them.

    ”But before then, we usually have an emblem launch which we use to remind ourselves that we are together with them in fellowship and we are together throughout this period to offer prayers, wish them the very best and offer some succour, especially to the families of the fallen heroes; the widows and the widowers.

    ”On behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, we would donate the sum of N50 million for the emblem. So you can see that we have done 10 fold of what we did the other time. That itself is a big lift for us. We will continue to support in other areas.

    ”I wish you the best as you go out to launch and further pass on the emblem and to say that the Lagos State Government will continue to identify with the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Legion and wish you the best in the preparation of this year’s activity,” he said.

    Speaking earlier, the Commandant of the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Legion, retired Col. Fola Akande, commended Gov. Sanwo-Olu for the welfare and concern of retired officers.

    According to him, Mr Governor is indeed a worthy patriot of the Nigerian Legion.

    Akande urged the people and government to continue to support and identify with widows, children and families of the fallen heroes by donating generously, buying and wearing the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration emblem.

    Gov. Sanwo-Olu, alongside his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, some cabinet members and heads of security agencies in the State were decorated with the Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem.

    Lagos Red, Blue rail line projects target still on course — Sanwo-Olu

    Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday assured that the fourth quarter 2022 completion target for the Red and Blue line rail projects remains on course.

    Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance while addressing newsmen after inspection of the projects at Ikeja, Yaba, Ebute Metta and Marina stations.

    The Red and Blue line rail is part of the intermodal transportation system of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration in reducing gridlock and ensuring interconnectivity in different parts of the state.

    When completed, the 37 kilometres Red Line Rail Project will link Agbado to Marina, while the 27.5 kilometres Blue line Rail Project will run from Okokomaiko to Marina.

    He expressed satisfaction with the pace of works at the rail stations, as the contractors were on course, hoping that they would round up works on the Blue and Red line rails according to schedule for commercial activities later in the year.

    ”Our promise on the blue and the red line is still on course. We believe that by coming on a quarterly basis to supervise them, we would ensure that before the end of this year, we will see the trains on top of the tracks.

    ”That is our commitment and we will begin to monitor and check ourselves.

    ”It is a very iconic and landmark project that we are truly proud of. On behalf of the government, I want to commend all of our contractors because they are very committed.

    ”They have assured us that whatever it takes, they will complete all of the projects on schedule and on budget,” the governor said.

    He promised to intensify supervision and monitoring of the projects quarterly to facilitate speedy completion.

    ”We embarked on this similar tour about three or four months ago and we did mention that we would be doing it every quarter, so that we can see how far the constructions are going.

    ”As we all have seen, I am happy to report that the construction is going on according to schedule. All the contractors are here even today not being a working day, they are all on-site working,” Sanwo-Olu said.

    He also disclosed the plan by the state government to relocate the market around the Train Station at Yaba, as the government was engaging concerned stakeholders on how best to relocate traders to another place.

    During Monday’s tour to the four stations by Gov. Sanwo-Olu, there were significant improvement in construction works at the sites of the Ikeja, Yaba, Ebute-Metta and Marina stations, compared to Sept. 25, 2021 visit to the sites.

    At the Ikeja Station, which will be the main iconic station for the red line project, the station was at foundation level in September, but the project is now at the second floor level, remaining the third floor, which is the final floor.

    The road works at Ikeja, as well as the overpass from Obafemi Awolowo to Agege Motor Road are also ongoing.

    At Yaba site, about three months ago, the contractor was at the excavating stage but, they are now decking to go to the second floor, in line with the matching order to the contractor to ensure that they keep to the timelines and the deadline.

    The Ebute-Metta Station is far ahead of delivery because the contractor has finished the carcass of the station as the governor’s entourage was able to walk into the station safely.

    There are also great improvements in the pace of work at the iconic Marina Station, as beams meant for the construction of the station have already been precast and kept in a safe place.

  • Sanwo-Olu signs Lagos 2022 budget of N1.758 trillion into law

    Sanwo-Olu signs Lagos 2022 budget of N1.758 trillion into law

    Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Friday signed the 2022 Appropriation Bill of N1.758 trillion christened ‘Budget of Consolidation’ into law.

    Governor Sanwo-Olu, while signing the Bill at the Lagos House, Ikeja, said that the capital expenditure stands at N1.166 trillion, representing 66 percent of the budget estimates, while recurrent expenditure is N591 billion, representing 34 percent, to maintain the 66:34 percent budget tradition of Lagos State.

    Speaking after signing the 2022 Appropriation bill, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the budget is to consolidate infrastructural development across the state in line with his administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S. developmental agenda to address issues on education, infrastructure, health, technology, social intervention, rail projects and other critical areas.

    While explaining the rationale behind the increase in the 2022 Appropriation Bill from the initial N1.388 trillion budget estimates presented to the Lagos State House of Assembly on November 24, Sanwo-Olu said there is a need to capture all financing options for the Blue and Red line rail projects and other ongoing projects in the Budget of Consolidation.

    He said: “Let me state at this juncture that the difference between the budget amount presented by the Executive and the final amount passed by the Legislature is largely accounted for by the decision to further accelerate already existing infrastructure projects and bring them to substantial levels of completion.

    “We have also decided to capture in the Budget, the financing being deployed towards the Blue Line and the Red Line rail projects by private sector consortia, up to a level that will not put pressure on our cash flow and debt sustainability.

    “In addition, this 2022 Appropriation Bill recognises several other already-funded project transactions that are now being accounted for as corporate transactions. What this means is that we are now choosing to capture in the Budget the significant value already accruing to the State from these projects.

    “As I said during the presentation to the House of Assembly, this will be the last full-year budget in the tenure of this administration. As a result, a major focus of this budget will be ensuring the completion of all ongoing projects that are critical to achieving our desire to build a Greater Lagos in line with the goals and objectives of the T.H.E.M.E.S development agenda.”

    He said the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Sam Egube would present to the public the full details and breakdown of the budget in due course.

    Governor Sanwo-Olu also commended the Speaker and members of the Lagos State House of Assembly for their cooperation and support, especially in ensuring the quick consideration and passage of the 2022 Appropriation Bill, which he presented on Wednesday, November 24.

    The Governor also appreciated Lagosians for their support in ensuring the impressive performance in the implementation of the 2021 budget, against all odds, especially the continuous challenge posed by COVID 19.

    “I believe very strongly that we, working together, and with everyone doing their part diligently, will achieve much more in 2022,” the Governor said.

    Speaking earlier, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudasiru Obasa, stated that the budget was given expeditious approval with proper scrutiny within five weeks to ensure that all projects are executed.

    Obasa, who was represented by the Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Appropriation, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, said the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration is heading in the right direction in ensuring that infrastructural projects are put in place across the state in line with the T.H.E.M.E.S. development agenda.

    He also commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for completing all the projects he inherited and providing funds for all the ongoing projects in different parts of the State.

    Also speaking, Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Sam Egube, commended the Lagos State House of Assembly for the speedy passage of the 2022 Appropriation Bill.

    He said he was excited and grateful to all stakeholders for leading the process to the signing of the biggest State’s budget.

    It would be recalled that the Lagos State House of Assembly on Wednesday passed the 2022 budget estimates with a slight increase of the grand total from the initial N1.38 trillion to N1.758 trillion.

    Walsh vehemently condemned what he described as unpatriotic, arrogant and insensitive response of the celebrities in the country to the call for a peace walk by the the Lagos State Governor, stressing that the peace walk was one of the ways to build relationship and winning the confidence of youths after the EndSars saga.

  • #EndSARS: Lagos panel indicts Gov Sanwo-Olu, says massacre happened at Lekki Tollgate

    #EndSARS: Lagos panel indicts Gov Sanwo-Olu, says massacre happened at Lekki Tollgate

    The Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry (JPI) set up by the State government to look into cases of abuses that happened during the #EndSARS protest at Lekki Tollgate has indicted the State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports a copy of the JPI report perused by this medium indicated that the Lagos State Government invited the Nigerian Army to the State through the Governor before the hierarchy of the Nigerian Army deployed its soldiers to the Lekki Toll Gate on the night of the 20th of October.

    Recall that the panel chaired by Justice Doris Okuwobi submitted two reports of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for victims of SARS related abuses and other matters to Mr Sanwo-Olu on Monday at the Lagos House, Ikeja.

    The two reports submitted by the Panel to Lagos State Government are on investigation on petitions on several abuses and killings by the Nigerian Police, especially the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and the October 20, 2020 Lekki Toll Gate shootings during the EndSARS protests hijacked by hoodlums.

    According to the executive summary of the the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for victims of SARS related abuses and other matters report, there was an attempt to cover up the Incident of the 20th of October by the cleaning of the Lekki Toll Gate and the failure to preserve the scene ahead of potential investigations.

    The report also indicated that at the Lekki Toll Gate, officers of the Nigerian Army shot, injured and killed unarmed helpless and defenseless protesters, without provocation or justification, while they were waving the Nigerian Flag and singing the National Anthem and the manner of assault and killing could in context be described as a massacre.

    The Panel also found that the conduct of the Nigerian Army was exacerbated by its refusal to allow ambulances render medical assistance to victims who required such assistance. The Army was also found not to have adhered to its own Rules of Engagement.

    Read the executive summary of the Lagos State judicial panel of inquiry report below:

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

    The #EndSARS #ReformPoliceNG Advocacy upon which the protesters premised their #EndSARS demonstration of discontent/Protest on, has been the most prominent advocacy in Nigeria and a major rallying point, convergence and common ground for the national Police brutality imbroglio since 2016.

    This is one of the reasons why the advocacy was surgically curated and the youth protest that followed built on that protocol in an orderly, organized and transparent fashion, reinforcing the specific objective of shutting down the culture of impunity (#EndSARS) -through the disbandment of the poster child of impunity within the police structure (i.e. SARS and all Tactical Squads of the Police formation) and the End Goal of the holistic reformation of the Nigeria Police Force–#ReformPoliceNG

    However, the dearth of proper public orientation and sensitization by the Federal Government about the progress made over the years on the trajectory of reformation of the Nigeria Police Force, given the years of advocacy and dialogues cum the persistence of outrageous and gross violation of human rights (torture, extra judicial killings, extortion, robbery, unlawful arrest and detention among others) with impunity, being perpetrated by the Nigeria Police, forced the youth to express their constitutionally protected Rights and Freedom of Expression and Assembly to demonstrate their discontent from the 8th – 20⁰ October, 2020.

    From the 8th of October 2020, the protest under hashtag #ENDSARS started in Lagos and grew into large movement at various locations in Lagos and across the country principally targeted towards drawing attention to the ubiquitous incidents of Police brutality (Culture of Impunity) and poor working conditions of Police officers.

    One of the demands from the protesters was the setting up of Judicial Panels of Inquiry to investigate cases of Police brutality. Lagos State Government obliged this request on the 15th of October, 2020 and set up the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry Into Victims of Police Brutality and other Related Matters, which was inaugurated on the 19th of October 2020.

    Its main Terms of Reference was to look into cases of Police brutality and other related matters and award compensation to successful petitions. The members were Honourable Justice Doris Okuwobi, Chairperson, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa SAN, representing Civil Society, Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Frederick Taiwo Lakanu, Ms. Patience Patrick Udoh representing Civil Society, Mr. Segun Awosanya, Human Rights Activist, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Odusanya, Director of Citizens’ Rights, Ministry of Justice, Mr Lucas Koyejo Esq. representative of the National Human Rights Commission, and Mr. Majekodunmi Temitope Oluwaseun, Youth Representative.

    The Panel shall ensure speedy inquiry/restitution on SARS activities and Extra-Judicial killings of innocent citizens by the dissolved SARS with a view to delivering justice for the Victims as well as compensate their families/dependents.

    IN particular it shall –

    1. Receive memoranda from concemed members of the public and inquire into cases of abuse, brutality, torture, extra-judicial killings by the disbanded SARS in Lagos State;

    2. Identify the victims of brutality, torture and extra-judicial killings by the disbanded SARS;

    3. Identify Officers of SARS involved in the abuse of rights of citizens and make appropriate recommendations for prosecution of such Officers;

    4. Evaluate the cases of the victims; determine those deserving compensation as a result of such violations by Officers of the disbanded SARS and recommend compensations payable to them from the Victims Trust Fund established by the Governor,

    5. To investigate the incident at the Lekki Toll- Gate on 20th October, 2020 and make necessary findings and recommendations. 6. Examine any other matters incidental to any of the terms of reference stated above; and

    7. Make necessary recommendation(s) to guide against future abuse of human rights by the Nigeria Police in Lagos State.

    AND the Governor further directed that the Chairman and members of the Panel constituted under this instrument shall remain in Office for a period of six (6) months commencing from the date of appointment and this period may be extended at the discretion of the Governor in writing.

    Following the Panel’s inauguration, on the 20th of October 2020 there were allegations that the officers of the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Police Force had gone to the Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos State, the epicenter of the #ENDSARS protests and shot at peaceful protesters.

    Following this, the Lagos State Government expanded the Terms of Reference of the Panel to include an investigation into what became known as the Lekki Toll Gate (LTG) Incident. The composition of members facilitated a comprehensive and cohesive approach to the investigative work of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry.

    The Panel began its investigation into the Lekki Toll Gate Incident of 20th October, 2020, by issuing Summons to parties it considered pertinent to its finding and investigations as follows: The Lekki Concession Company (LCC), operators of the Lekki Toll Gate, Nigerian Army (NA); The Hierarchy of Lagos State Police Command and later also to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Maroko Police Division, the Lagos State Government, various hospitals, who were said to have attended to victims of the Lekki Toll Gate Incident, Operators of Advertising Billboards at the Lekki Toll Gate, and News outlets who carried investigative journalism on the incident.

    The response to the Summons was hugely positive, as over 80% of those summoned honored the invitations, and gave evidence before the Panel, which assisted it greatly in unravelling the events of the 20th October 2020. The protesters on their own attended the Panel’s proceedings and presented evidence of what happened at the Lekki Toll Gate on the 20th of October, 2020.

    On the part of the ENDSARS Protesters the Panel specifically considered the evidence of persons, who alleged that they were victims with injuries or death of their loved ones, which occurred during the Lekki Toll Gate Incident and the testimonies of those who were present and traumatized. Some gave accounts of what happened even though they had no physical injuries.

    The evidence considered in this regard usually represented similar versions of the Lekki Toll Gate Incident as corroborated by other protesters, who were treated as Petitioners with Petitions arising from the Toll Gate Incident. Virtually all witnesses were cross examined by counsel to parties with opposing versions of Lekki Toll Gate Incident. Sequel to the above the Panel reached its findings and prepared its reports despite the evidence of the Nigerian Army, that was limited, as most of the officers who were summoned and who filed affidavits never appeared before the Panel).

    At the conclusion of evidence of all relevant parties, key issues which called for determination and upon which the findings of the Panel were based are summarized as follows:

    Whether the Nigerian Army used live bullets on unarmed and defenseless protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate on 20th October 2020? .

    Whether the live bullets resulted in injuries or casualties on the part of the protesters?

    Whether the Police was at the Toll Gate on the night of the 20th of October 2020 and the morning of the 21st of October 2020 and whether they shot at unarmed and defenseless protesters?

    Whether the LCC played any role in the events of the night of the 20th of October 2020?

    Whether the Lagos State played any role in the Lekki Toll Gate Incident of the 20th of October 2020.

    The Panel thus made the following key findings:

    1. That the Nigerian Army was invited for intervention in the State and was deployed to Lekki Toll Gate on the 20th of October 2020. At the Lekki Toll Gate, officers of the Nigerian Army shot, injured and killed unarmed helpless and defenseless protesters, without provocation or justification, while they were waving the Nigerian Flag and singing the National Anthem and the manner of assault and killing could in context be described as a massacre. The Panel also found that the conduct of the Nigerian Army was exacerbated by its refusal to allow ambulances render medical assistance to victims who required such assistance. The Army was also found not to have adhered to its own Rules of Engagement.

    2. The Panel found that the Nigerian Police Force deployed its officers to the Lekki Toll Gate on the night of the 20th October, 2020 and between that night and the morning of the 21st of October, 2020, its officer shot at, assaulted and battered unarmed protesters, which led to injuries and deaths. The police officers also tried to cover up their actions by picking up bullets.

    3. The panel found that LCC hampered the panel’s investigation by refusing to turn over some useful and vital information/evidence as requested by the Panel and the Forensic Expert engaged by the panel, even where such information and evidence was by the company’s admission, available. It manipulated the incomplete CCTV Video footage of the Lekki Toll Gate on the night of the 20th of October 2020, which it tendered before the Panel.

    4. The Panel found that there was an invitation of the Nigerian Army to Lagos State made by the Lagos State Government through the Governor before the hierarchy of the Nigerian Army deployed its soldiers to the Lekki Toll Gate on the night of the 20th of October.

    5. The Panel found that there was an attempt to cover up the Incident of the 20th of October by the cleaning of the Lekki Toll Gate and the failure to preserve the scene ahead of potential investigations.

    Upon the above key findings amongst others, the Panel made a total of 32 Recommendations, which included but not limited to:

    Holistic Police Reforms covering welfare, training and proper equipping of Policemen and their working environment; Sanctioning of the officers of the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Police Force respectively who participated in shooting, injuring and killing of unarmed protestors at the Lekki Toll Gate on the 20 and 21st of October 2020;

    Development of more robust engagement between the Youth and the Government; Setting up of a Standing Committee/Tribunal to deal with cases of Violation of Human Rights by security agencies and a trust fund to settle compensation awarded by such committee/tribunal;

    A public apology to ENDSARS protesters who were killed, injured and traumatized by the Incident of the 20th of October 2020;

    The memorialization of the Lekki Toll Gate and the 20th of October going forward.

    The recognition of Hospitals and Medical Doctors who played heroic roles following the Incident of the Lekki Toll Gate on the 20th of October 2020 thereby saving lives and minimizing the impact of the injuries suffered by the victims, most of which were on a pro-bono basis;

    The Panel recommended various sums of compensation to victims of the Lekki Toll Gate Incident, which must be expeditious in order to accelerate the healing process. The Panel recommended that any data that may have been generated over the years on the impunity of the Police across Nigeria be studied and deployed as early warning signs (EWS) mechanism.

    The Panel recognizes that it had the cooperation of most stakeholders save for the Nigerian Army and some others who ignored summons issued by the Panel. The Panel accordingly notes the cooperation of stakeholders through their respective Counsel, such Counsel included, members of the Nigerian Bar Association, Counsel to the various groups of ENDSARS Protesters, Counsel to Lagos State Government, and Counsel to the Nigeria Police Force.

    The Panel is grateful to the experts, who honored its various summons to attend proceedings and provide the panel with vital information and evidence. The contributions of the aforementioned aided tremendously the investigative work of the Panel.

    The greatest limitation of the Panel was time as the Panel had to undertake its investigation into the Lekki Toll Gate Incident alongside other petitions in respect of Police brutality related matters. Following this limitation the panel was unable to determine all Petitions arising from the Lekki Toll Gate Incident and accordingly urges that those petitions be heard and determined by the standing committee/tribunal on Human Rights recommended by it.

    The Panel thanks the Lagos State Government for giving it the opportunity to serve, providing the resources and allowing it to conduct its investigations and arrive at its findings independently and with integrity.

    The Panel believes that with the implementation of the recommendations, the LEKKI TOLL GATE INCIDENT OF 20TH OCTOBER 2020 will never happen again, lessons will be leamt on all sides and there will be healing in the great state of Lagos State.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, following the incident, has suspended the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Mr. Gbolahan Oki.

    The Lagos State Government has also set up an independent panel to probe the collapse of the 21-storey building on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi.

    Members of the panel will be drawn from the Nigeria Institute of Architects (NIA), Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) and other professional bodies.

    It will independently investigate the remote and immediate causes of the incident and make recommendations on how to prevent future occurrence.

    The investigation is not part of the internal probe already being conducted by the government.

    Sanwo-Olu has said the government will surely find out what went wrong and punish those indicted.

    The Governor, as a first step, has directed that the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Mr. Gbolahan Oki, an architect, be suspended from work immediately. The suspension is indefinite.

    More equipment and personnel have been deployed in the site to save more lives.

    Nine persons – all men – have been pulled out of the rubble alive. They have been taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, 14 others were brought out dead – as at 2pm.

    Mr. Sanwo-Olu thanked all first responders and those who have joined the rescue efforts, including construction giants Julius Berger, Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

    A help desk is to be set up at the site for people seeking information about their relations who may have been involved in the incident. The media are hereby notified that the government will be releasing information whenever the need arises to avoid any sensational reporting of the unfortunate incident.

    The Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, was today at the site to encourage rescuers and comfort relations.
