BREAKING: Sanwo-Olu grants Funke Akindele, husband State pardon

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has granted State pardon to Mrs Funke Akindele-Bello and her husband, Mr Abdulrasheed Bello, who are both non-custodial convicts for offences related to the disobedience of COVID-19 lockdown regulations.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports a statement signed by the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo, said Sanwo-Olu acted based on the recommendations of the state advisory council on the prerogative of mercy.

Recall that Akindele and her hubby, better known as JJC Skillz, were on April 6 arrested and arraigned before a magistrate court for hosting a party at their Lekki home on April 4. The party was to mark the birthday of JJC Skillz.

The Lagos Magistrate Court in Ogba sentenced the sensational actress and her husband for breaching COVID-19 lockdown order. They were sentenced to three weeks of community service and directed to pay a fine of N100,000 each.

The sentence was given by Chief Magistrate Yewande Aje-Afunwa at the Ogba Magistrate Court on Monday, April 6, 2020, after the celebrity couple were found guilty of hosting the house party during the government-ordered lockdown.

According to the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, the prerogative of mercy was under the powers conferred on the Governor by Section 212 (1) & (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

Sanwo-Olu also approved the release of 56 inmates from various correctional centres in the State. The 56 released inmates were recommended by the Advisory Council after due examination of their case files and consideration of the length of time served, the gravity of the offence, old age and ill-health among other parameters.

The Attorney General enjoined the beneficiaries to be good citizens and stay away from crime.

The eight-member Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, headed by Dr Abayomi Finnih was inaugurated Governor Sanwo-Olu in December 2019.

Editor cries to Sanwo-Olu over Customs boss, Omonile take over of land

…says one Agabi a stripped chief is behind his ordeal

…begs Lagos AG to intervene to save his property from land grabbers

…warns that if nothing is done now, this could lead to breakdown of law

The Publisher and Editor-In-Chief of South South International magazine and former President of the League of Maritime Editors and Publishers as well as former Publicity Secretary of Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria, Ovie Edomi has cried to the Governor of Lagos State and his Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice over the activities of land grabbers in Ibereko, Lagos.

In an official letter to Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Attorney general of Lagos, the Lagos based Journalist and publisher explained how the land he has paid in installments for between 2016 and 2018 to the Kelani family, a prominent family with vast land in Ibereko was transpassed upon by an Assistant Customs Comptroller, Mr Lucky Udukhomose, serving in Tin Can port, Apapa along with his wife, Pastor Mrs Favour Udukhomose who connived with Omonile to buy the same land from one self acclaimed Chief Ogabi who has been stripped of his chieftaincy title by the Oba of Ibereko and who claimed to be related to the Kelani family in order to expand Sapphire Gold Group of Schools, a private school built by the Assistant Customs Comptroller for his wife beside the Editor’s mini estate.

According to Edomi, the Lagos State law on land Grabbing has made Lagos State very peaceful for its’ inhabitants and wondered why a serving Customs officer, who knows the law and should be seen obeying the law be the one to connive with unscrupulous element with a view to promoting his business interest when the Customs boss knows for a fact that the Journalist who had plantains planted on the land and has been harvesting the plantains for upward of 2years owes the land.

Edomi further warned that any attempt to engage in land Grabbing, indiscriminate construction of private schools especially those that are constructed to block government approved streets and made the street a close without government approval would someday led to breakdown of law and order in Ibereko if the government does not implement its’ urban planning and environmental laws.

He therefore called on the state Governor to put up stricter measures to check those who build indiscriminately without regard to the laws of the state and speed up the prosecution of land Grabbers in order to check the menance of land grabbling as well as close all illegal schools in Ibereko, Badagry.

Edomi who says he believes in the rule of law and God’s protection for His children, however lamented that his life is being threatened by self acclaimed Chief Ogabi and his two Brothers who are acting on behalf of the Customs boss and his wife called on the Governor and the Attorney general of the state, well meaning Nigerians, the World Press Organization as well as the Presidents of NUJ, UPU worldwide, CAN, PFN and NBA to equally intervene saying the Customs boss and his wife,a Pastor, this time flew too high and too close to the sun with waxed wings.

Furthermore, Edomi noted that with over 20 million people and expected to double by 2040, Lagos State will become a mega city as envisaged by the Lagos State government if people obey town planning and environmental laws.

Meanwhile a document by the Kelani Oke family claimed that the land stretching from Kelani Street down to Oke Oko street at Ibereko belong to their father and claimed that the Customs boss had approached the Kelani family through one Chief Ogabi Brothers to buy the land but he was told that the had been sold to a Journalist.

Edomi who is equally an Editorial Board member of the Compendium on Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SAN, further told newsmen that he earlier reported the matter to the Comptroller of Customs, TIN Can port, but regretted that nothing was done before crying to the Lagos State Governor for justice especially when he saw that the Customs boss took advantage of the lockdown owing to the COVID-19 pandemic to start construction of a storey building on the land. A development which he decried and noted that it is in further contravention of the government’s order during this period of lockdown as well as to show that the Customs boss is above the law or to prove that nothing would happen even if he breaks the law. Such person in developed societies of which Nigeria is one, needs to be further investigated by the Nigeria Customs Service where he works and the EFCC to know the source of the wealth which he displays now and reason for taking the law into his hands.

Edomi, who described the development as a demonstration of lawlessness, ungodliness, oppression, insatiable greed and attempt to use one’s privileged position to acquire other people’s property or parvet justice insisted on justice, said he has no other option than to cry to the Lagos State Governor.

Political Hawks Sponsoring Attacks on LAWMA MD

    …How this may affect Sanwo-Olu

Indications have emerged that some forces within the Lagos State Government may be planning a vicious attack on one of the brilliant minds making waves in the Sanwo-Olu administration, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegeshin.

Reports have it that the said leader of the hawks, a senior government official has disbursed a huge sum of money today to some Bloggers to begin to promote a false story that an audit of LAWMA account has uncovered what they called “massive fraud” in the accounts of the agency. Contrary to the claim, there is no such audit report anywhere.

According to a Source who pleaded for anonymity, ” Lagosians should watch out. Each of the Bloggers got a sum N100,000 to N150,000 depending on their clouts to help promote the false news. I can tell you for free, there is no audit report like that. It is just politics taken too far.”

Another reliable Source close to the APC leadership said, “I do hope that those behind this campaign will be called to order by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. This is just pure indiscretion. We cannot be arming the opposition. Have we learnt anything at all in the current Edo State saga? They should just know, the internet never forgets.”

He lamented that this internal mess has gone on for weeks now because the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been preoccupied with other issues such as the Lagos State House of Assembly crisis and now the death of the Senator representing Lagos East, Bayo Oshinowo popularly caller Pepper.

“This whole thing is about an attempt by these hawks to gain control of LAWMA ahead of 2023 so they can dictate some terms to Governor Sanwo-Olu when the time comes to seek reelection. They know Asiwaju will be busy with his own campaign in 2023. So these guys want to take control and checkmate Sanwo-Olu. You know LAWMA is a grassroots movement,” the Source further said.

The battle for the soul of LAWMA has been raging for weeks now unabated.

“Dear Lagosians, yesterday I announced the discharge of one more patient from our Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba. Today, I am happy to inform you that five more patients comprising two males and three females including a 10 year old girl have tested negative twice to COVID-19.

  • Coronavirus: How Italian citizen passed airport screening without being detected

The federal government (FG) immediately triggered advanced end-to-end screening for passengers flying into Nigeria, especially from high-risk countries after the Italian citizen, who tested positive of Coronavirus (Covid-19), scaled through health screening at the Lagos airport without being detected.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who made this known on Friday during a first press conference held at the State House in Marina to brief the public on the matter, said investigation showed the virus did not manifest in the patient at the time he passed through the airport.

Following the reported case of the Italian citizen diagnosed with the infectious viral disease in the State in the early hours of Friday, the Lagos State Government has raised its level of response to Coronavirus (COVID-19) incident, according to Sanwo-Olu.

The Governor also offered more information on how the patient was identified and efforts currently being made to prevent the spread of the virus.

The patient, Sanwo-Olu said, is an Ogun State-based expatriate who flew into Lagos from Milan in Italy via Istanbul, Turkey last Monday evening. The Governor said the patient, whose name was not disclosed, remained in stable condition at the bio-security facility in Yaba, Lagos Mainland, where he is being isolated.

It was gathered that the patient, although, tested positive to COVID-19 virus, is yet to show any respiratory symptoms at press time. He complained of fever and body pain, which prompted his transfer from Ogun State to Lagos for advanced medical investigation.

Sanwo-Olu said a number of persons, who had physical contact with the patient before the virus was diagnosed, are being traced, while others are currently being examined for possible symptoms.

Sanwo-Olu said there should be no cause for panic among Nigerians over the reported COVID-19 incident, stressing that measures had been set in motion by the State and Federal governments to contain the spread of the virus across the country.

He particularly allayed the fear of Lagos residents, saying the two bio-security facilities in the State had the capability to contain the virus.

“At 10pm on Thursday, I got a call from the Commissioner of Health, who reported possible identification of patient with coronavirus in Ogun State. Immediately, we triggered all levels of bio-security responses and containment facilities. After series of laboratory examination, the patient was confirmed to have tested positive to the virus in early hours of today (Friday) and we immediately alerted the federal authorities, including the President and everybody who needs to be aware.

“We are in constant touch with the company where the patient was engaged. The management and personnel of the company have been cooperative. Health workers and emergency officials are on the field to track all persons that had physical contacts and interaction with the patient.

“Our bio-security facilities have been fortified to continue any form of test and contain any other potential case. We are in constant touch with the Federal Ministry of Health to harmonise our response to the incident. For us in Lagos, we are doing anything that needs to be done. The patient is stable and every health intervention required is currently being given to him,” Sanwo-Olu said.

On how the patient scaled through health screening at the Lagos airport without being detected, Sanwo-Olu said investigation showed the virus did not manifest in the patient at the time he passed through the airport. The incident, he said, prompted the Government to immediately trigger advanced end-to-end screening for passengers flying into Nigeria, especially from high-risk countries.

The Governor said there would not be prohibition of public gatherings and regular activities in Lagos despite the diagnosed case of COVID-19, pointing out that such measure may give rise to needless panic among the general public. He said the condition of the patient was not “highly contagious” at the moment, adding that the State would only ban outdoor gatherings in the case of escalation in person-to-person transmission of the virus.

He said: “It is only when there is a high level of escalation that the public can be panicky and this is when we realise that it is getting to person-to-person transmission. As we have said, this isolated case has been contained right from the hospital where he was first admitted and the guesthouse he slept after his arrival in Nigeria. It is when there is a person-to-person infection that we can trigger another level of isolation and curtail public events where large number of people can gather. I don’t think we have gotten to that level yet.”

Sanwo-Olu also cleared the air on why the patient was transferred to Lagos after the incident was reported in Ogun State, saying the Federal Government only established testing centres to prevent coronavirus in States that have international airports. Lagos, the Governor said, is the only State in the Southwest that has testing centres. He said the State was also considered based on its sophisticated bio-security facilities, which were established during the outbreak of Ebola virus.

Prof. Abayomi explained how the diagnosis was carried out, following the patient’s complaint of fever and body pain. He said the patient started to show signs of illness on Wednesday afternoon, after which he was presented at the Ogun State-based firm’s hospital where investigation began.

He said: “Investigation began at the hospital after the patient gave history of his trip to Nigeria. The medical personnel at the company’s hospital kept the patient in isolation overnight and contacted us at the bio-security in Lagos for assistance. We immediately asked them to transfer the case to Lagos. The patient was brought to our high-containment in Yaba on Thursday morning.

“Immediately the patient arrived, he was put in proper isolation and appropriate tests were conducted on him. Within hours, we received signals that the laboratory tests were showing signs of positivity. At that point, we informed the Federal Minister of Health and Governor Sanwo-Olu, who is the Chief Incident Commander in Lagos.”

The Health Commissioner said the patient was responding well under a supportive therapy, saying efforts were on to identify all persons that had physical contact with the patient to break the cycle of transmission.

He disclosed that the State remained prepared to contain potential spread of the virus, observing that Lagos had wrapped up the capacity of its containment facility to 80-bed as a result of the emergency funds released by the Governor.

Prof. Abayomi said more capabilities were being put in place by the State to deal with increase number of cases. He said aggressive public awareness campaign was going on to sensitise residents on hygiene and activities that can prevent the spread of virus.
