What Gov Sanwo-Olu said about Wigwe at one-year memorial service

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has acknowledged the contributions of the late Herbert Wigwe, former Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, stating that his support expedited project conception and execution in the state.

Sanwo-Olu made this remark during a tribute at the one-year memorial service held for Wigwe, his wife, and son by Access Bank on Sunday in Lagos.

Wigwe, along with his wife Doreen, son Chizi, and a friend, Mr Abimbola Ogunbanjo, Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, and two crew members, died in a helicopter crash in U.S. on Feb. 9, 2024.

Describing Wigwe as a “relentless builder,” Sanwo-Olu said that his absence had created void in Lagos State, particularly in project delivery.

He noted Wigwe’s belief in Nigeria and Africa, highlighting his ability to translate ideas into reality, see opportunities in seemingly impossible situations, and build lasting legacies.

“The countless ideas he nurtured into reality, several of them are around us in this room, institutions, organisations, and they were not just moments of brilliance, his tenacity and his unshakable belief in what is possible.

“He especially believed in our work here in Lagos State. Herbert traveled the world with us, helping us, helping my government to mobilise partners and funding,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor also described Wigwe as an achiever who positively impacted Lagos State, its institutions, and its people.

He emphasised the impact of Wigwe’s absence, noting, “Lagos State has felt his absence very strongly in the last one year.

“People in this room know truly what I’m talking about.

“There are projects that would, no doubt, have moved faster today because if Herbert’s been around, will have pushed it forward.”

He noted that across the state lies several stamps of Herbert’s real based impacts, which include roads, bridges and the effort to revamp  the historic National Arts Theater.

He said these also include the upcoming Gold Label Access Bank Lagos Marathon, launched in partnership with Lagos State 10 years ago.

The governor recalled Wigwe’s crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic, citing his support through financial services, philanthropy, and other contributions that made his work easier.

He added, “We lost a man, whose presence was larger than life; Dr Herbert Wigwe.

“That cruel night took not only Herbert, but also his beloved wife, Chizoba, their son, Chizi, and a cherished friend for so many of us here today, Bimbo, the pain of their passing still lingers like an open wound that time has not been able to heal.

“If love, friendship, or sheer force of will could rewrite history, we would have turned back time. We would have done anything, we would have done everything to change the course of events that led to that fateful night.

“However, life, in its unpredictability, has forced us to confront a reality we never prepared for. A world without Herbert and his other three souls.”

Sanwo-Olu described Wigwe as a builder of businesses, people, ideas, and the future, noting his forward-thinking approach.

“Actions, not words, was his language. Ideas were not just ideas, they were blueprints for transformation and in the three, or more that I have had the privilege to call him a friend and a brother,” he said.

He offered his condolences to Wigwe’s children, parents, the Access Bank family, and others, praying for their strength, saying, “Lagos truly misses you (Wigwe)”.

  • Rhodes-Vivour slams Sanwo-Olu for overspending amid biting hardship

Rhodes-Vivour slams Sanwo-Olu for overspending amid biting hardship

The governorship candidate of the Labour party in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has called out the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for over spending amidst biting hardship across the state.

TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that during a recent YouTube feature on  Iyabo Ojo TV, the LP guber candidate alleged that Sanwo-Olu is misusing taxpayers’ money.

Rhodes-Vivour gave a breakdown of the extravagant spending of the Sanwo-led government by listing payment of personal legal bills, spending nearly ₦200 million on unspecified projects, and allocating ₦2 billion for purchasing fans and consultants for bus networks.

He said, “For instance, when we called out that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is using taxpayers money to pay his own personal legal bills or how they’re using, yes, almost 200 million Naira, or how they use almost two billion, say they wanted to buy fans or spending billions on consultants for bus routes and bus networks.

“With the level of suffering that Nigerians and Lagosians are dealing with, we need to have accountability and transparency. Our government must be using our money in the most efficient way possible, and that is the work of the opposition.”

The LP guber candidate further hinted at running again for the Lagos Governorship position, stating that he is learning from past mistakes and working to strengthen his political movement.

He added, By God’s grace, we are working. We gained a lot of traction, we also saw our mistakes, we saw the loopholes we made, and we’re working on that, I think the biggest mistake that has happened in Lagos politics is after elections, the opposition goes quiet, which is not, that is not happening this time.

“We’re in people’s faces, we’re doing our best in terms of health outreaches; we have a micro-health insurance plan that we’re taking all across the state where people can get treatment of up to six thousand Naira for free and just being up to date to current affairs.”

Sanwo-Olu said these achievements were as a result of deliberate policies and investments that had created an enabling environment for innovation to thrive.

He said over 450 smart cameras under the Safe City Project would improve public safety and traffic management, as well as the Lagos Digital Service Platform.

“The platform is a transformative tool that embodies the state’s vision of accessible, transparent, and efficient governance.

“These projects are not just about infrastructure, they are about empowering our people and driving sustainable development across sectors.

The current 4,000MW being targeted by the government is only 13.33 per cent of the actual needs of the commercial city.

Present at the signing of the bill were; the Deputy Governor, Dr Femi Hamzat, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Pedro Lawal and Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, among others.
