Electoral Act: Ngige, Fashola, Amaechi cleared to vote at APC national convention

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige; Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola and the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi have been cleared to vote in the ongoing national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The APC made special concessions for the serving political appointees, who have previously served as Governors in their respective States in other for them to be able to vote at the national convention.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Amaechi has served as the governor of Rivers State, Ngige served as governor of Anambra State, and Fashola served as governor of Lagos State.

According to the Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, who is the Chairman of the publicity sub-committee for the APC national convention, the former governors would be given concessions because the party’s constitution makes them statutory delegates.

“Our delegates’ lists are statutory delegates. So if you have a former president as a political appointee, if you have a former senator as a political appointee, these are already automatic delegates.

“Let’s not confuse the two just because being an appointee doesn’t necessarily take you out of being a delegate, because our delegates are classified clearly. Former presidents from our party, former elected personalities, party officials and the rest are delegates.

“So if you are talking of the ones we have submitted now, we don’t have commissioners, we don’t have advisers, we don’t have all those unless somebody particularly who was a former this or former that. In that case, just being an appointee doesn’t completely exclude such a person from being a delegate,” Governor Sule emphasized.

Buhari inaugurates N1.2 billion housing units in Delta

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday inaugurated N1.2 billion, 68 housing units at Issele-Azagba, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta.

The President, represented by the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, said the housing project was under the National Housing Programme (NHP), Phase 1.

He said that the housing projects which the Federal Government had undertaken in phases since 2016 were examples of the fulfilment of promise of change made in 2015.

Buhari lauded the support of the state government, adding, ”the Federal Government will continue to deepen its commitment in the sector to meet the housing needs of Nigerians.

“This is a good example of some of the developmental possibilities that inter-governmental collaboration can produce and I am optimistic that with the provision of more land, the federal government will do more,” he said.

The president said that the project had engaged and empowered more Nigerians, particularly the ordinary Nigerians.

“We certainly cannot meet every one of those Nigerians in person, but our economic policies and investments in infrastructure such as this National Housing Programme and others will reach and positively impact many of them.

“Our desire and commitment toward improving the human condition and our message of change, have another facet beyond jobs creation.

“It responds to those who have long aspired to own homes and that dream has come true with this project,” Buhari said.

He said that the Federal Government would fulfil its promise to allot housing units to former super eagles players.

Buhari added that the players should come forward for their keys to their apartments in any state of their choice.

On his part, the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, represented by Mr Biodun Oki, Senior Special Assistant to the Minister, said the project consists 68 housing units, with roads, electricity and water facilities.

    Fashola said that the 68 houses comprise 28 units of two-bedroom bungalows, 16 units of three-bedroom bungalows and 24 units in condominiums (4 one-bedroom, 16 two-bedroom and 4 three-bedroom).

“We have offered all these housing units to members of the general public in a bond recriminatory way by opening the National Housing Portal to ensure that those interested are not inhibited by any artificial obstacles.

“Allocation will be made on the basis of those who apply and pay on a first-come, first-serve basis,” Fashola said.

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, represented by the Commissioner for Housing, Mr Festus Ochonogor, called for more collaborations between government and private sectors in order to meet the housing needs of Nigerians.

Okowa lamented the shortage of houses for the people, particularly the rising demand in the state capital, Asaba, and other fast-growing cities like Warri, and Ughelli, among others.

Earlier in his opening address, Mr Chukwunwike Uzo, the acting Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, represented by Mr Solomon Labafilo, director in the ministry, said the project had created both direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians.

Uzo said the housing projects had created over 14,500 and 50,140 direct and indirect jobs across the country.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the Asabgba of Asaba, Obi Chike Edozien and other dignitaries in appreciation for the laudable project.

It was gathered that the accident occurred on Tuesday evening. The driver was said to have lost control of the vehicle conveying security operatives and crashed into a deep pit.

An eyewitness, John Okorie, said the incident happened when the vehicle conveying the victims was negotiating the bend leading to the construction site of the Second Niger Bridge at the Asaba.

It was gathered that the police vehicle was speeding to meet up with the ministers’ vehicles when it veered off the road and crashed.

A Delta Line driver that witnessed the accident explained that “the incident was very fatal. The policeman driver was speeding and while negotiating the bend because of the speed could not control the vehicle. They crashed into a deep pit. I was at the back of the convoy, driving slowly.

“With the help of other people, we rescued four of them but they were badly injured. They were shouting as the vehicle fell on them.”

#EndSARS: I don’t know what happened to camera I found at Lekki Tollgate – Fashola

The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has said he does not know what happened to the video camera he recovered at the Lekki tollgate after the #EndSARS protests of October 2020.

Fashola made this known during an interview on Arise TV, when he was queried about the viral footage of him recovering a camcorder at the scene of the Lekki Tollgate protest in Lagos State.

The former Governor, who had visited the State in October last year to assess the damage caused by hoodlums, spotted a camcorder at the toll plaza which he handed over to a government official.

The viral footage of Fashola’s “recovery” became a meme on social media and trended for several weeks.

When asked what became of the camera, Fashola responded: “You should not be asking me. You have the tapes showing that I handed it over to the government of Lagos so you have all the recordings. I think your people were there. So don’t ask me what happened to the camera. I don’t know.”

On what he thought about the struggle by the youths to take power in 2023, Fashola said youths had ruled Nigeria more than the elderly.

He recalled that during the military regime, the officers who ruled Nigeria through the 1960s and 1980s were in their 30s and 40s.

The minister argued that most of these personalities remained on the scene.

2023: Fashola reacts to his involvement in presidency campaign groups

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has dissociated himself from groups operating under The Nigeria Project 2023 purportedly campaigning for him and Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum over the 2023 elections.

A poster from the group allegedly presenting Messrs Fashola and Zulum as presidential and vice-presidential candidates respectively of an unnamed political party has been circulating on social media.

Fashola’s spokesman Hakeem Bello said in a disclaimer today that he was addressing the issue for two reasons.

“The first of such was to answer with a strong negative to the numerous inquiries from right thinking and well-meaning Nigerians on whether the Honorable Minister had been contacted or if the Groups had his consent in issuing the invitation,” he said.

“Without equivocation, no individual or group has contacted the Honorable Minister for or on behalf of The Nigeria Project 2023. As Honorable Minister, Fashola is currently focused on leading his dedicated Team in the Ministry of Works and Housing to deliver on the mandate of President Muhammadu Buhari for an expanded and upgraded road transport infrastructure; and affordable Housing nationwide in order to achieve economic growth and prosperity for the citizenry.

“Secondly, is the fact that entities unknown to a political party cannot present candidates on behalf of such a political party. As a ranking and loyal member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the individual and groups cited as promoters of The Nigeria Project 2023 are unknown to the APC and the Honorable Minister.

“Against the backdrop of the foregoing, the Honorable Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola SAN urges members of the public to be wary of the antics of unsolicited individuals and Support Groups whose real intentions remain questionable.”

He added that every support possible should be given to the effort of the Buhari administration to deliver a better nation for all.

Minister outlines processes for allocation of FG houses nationwide

Mr Babatunde Fashola, Minister of Works and Housing, has said that Federal Government houses nationwide would be allocated through online applications.

Fashola stated this in an interview with Journalists during his inspection of houses under the Federal Government housing project on Thursday, in Bauchi.

He said very soon the process of allocation would start through online applications by the beneficiaries.

“The process is going to be on an online platform, the form will be online and pay online, fill them, you don’t need to give anything under the table . It is first come first served, that is why it takes a little while.

“We also noticed some dampness and drainage issues in the completed houses. Our facility manager would address them and find a way of draining the water for the beneficiaries”, he said.

Fashola pointed out that the houses would be allocated to all Nigerians; everybody is entitled to own the house through the online application.

He said the Federal Government was committed and passionate about solving the nation’s housing deficit.

“The Federal Government is determined to provide houses to the public across all the states of the federation”, the minister added.

He said the first phase of the houses had been completed; the Federal Government would now focus on the second phase to bridge the deficit in housing.

The Minister noted that the housing projects provide jobs to the citizens and boost the economy of the people in the state, as all materials used are bought in the state.

He commended the Bauchi state government for all the necessary support and for providing the land for the construction of the houses.

Yuletide: Fashola directs contractors to make Lagos-Ibadan Expressway motorable

The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola has directed Julius Berger, the contractor handling section one rehabilitation/reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to speed up construction ahead of the Yuletide.

Fashola while inspecting the highway on Saturday, told the Julius Berger team after taking their project presentations to hurry construction ahead of the Yuletide.

He urged the contractors to liaise with the Federal Controllers of Works in Lagos and Ogun States towards fixing important sections to make the road motorable, safe and free of traffic congestion.

The minister also urged the firm to improve the quality and spread of signages and diversion signs around the construction zone and accelerate work towards Christmas celebration.

Fashola urged the contractors whose section spanned from Ojota in Lagos to Sagamu Interchange to make the construction wear a ‘human face’ that addressed hardship of road users.

“Understand that you do it for people and we want a sense of compassion. Plan with the controllers of Lagos and Ogun,” he said.

In their presentation the Managing Director, Julius Berger, Mr Lars Richters alongside his project manager, Mr Thomas Christl took turns to explain efforts to speed up construction in spite of reckless driving and high traffic volume.

The duo also explained progress recorded on bridges and other construction on various sections of the highway.

The firm also raised issues of ‘Right of Way Compensations’ that were yet to be paid, thereby slowing down construction on some sections.

The firm lamented impatience of road users compounding gridlock on the highway.

“Here we are on good progress,” the project manager said.

The firm commended Fashola’s revolutionary achievements in the nation’s infrastructure development, and gave him an award on the project site.

Meanwhile, the Director, Federal Highways South West, Mr Adedamola Kuti also said that Julius Berger and RCC working on section two of the highway, had both been directed to carry out palliatives ahead of yuletide to make the highway smooth.

While inspecting section two of the highway which spanned from Sagamu Interchange to Ibadan, the Federal Controller of Works In Ogun, Mr Umar Bakare explained details of construction works on their project site.

“So far the contractor has achieved 51.6 per cent in the construction of the road. They have completed over 43 kilometers on Lagos and Ibadan bound from change 101 + 717 to change 57 plus 750.

“The project has been completed from around Guru Maharaji area in Ibadan up to others here where you have the trailer park. It has been completed substantially,” he said.

Bakare explained that the two carriageways had been completed to final layers within the section, adding that, other sections were on various levels of construction.

He assured that all sections would be made motorable on the project that had created over 400 direct jobs and over 1,450 people directly benefiting from the project.

He explained that over 20 million litres of diesel, over 30,000 tons of cement, over 1,000 tons of steel which had created indirect opportunities for citizens, adding that the contractor also took supplies of stones even though it had its own quarry.

He lamented activities of trucks blocking the Oghere side of the highway making the site inaccessible, but noted that a taskforce had been trying to curtail the excesses of the drivers causing gridlock.

The Managing Director of RCC, contractors on the project, Mr Nabeel Esawi, assured that the firm planned to open all diversions before Dec. 22 after making the road motorable.

He said that the road had been completed to final asphalt on some sections with 51 kilometers on the Ibadan bound and 44 on the Lagos bound carriageway.

“Our programme of work this dry season is to complete 43 kilometers for both sides to have at least from 43 to 103, 60 kilometers completed on both sides. That is our programme we want to achieve up to May 2021,” he said.

Mr Uche Orji, Managing Director, Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) said the inspection was part of a fact finding mission on the project while explaining the funding.

  • NASS fires back at Fashola over failed roads in Benue

NASS fires back at Fashola over failed roads in Benue

Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Ajibola Basiru, has debunked claims that the National Assembly was responsible for the deplorable state of roads in Benue State as alleged recently by the Minister for Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola.

Fashola was quoted to have made the allegation on Monday in his office in Abuja during a courtesy visit by retired Generals and ‘other leaders of thought’ from Benue South Senatorial District led by Air Vice Marshal Morgan, following complaints about the deplorable state of roads in the senatorial district by members of the delegation.

But in a reaction, the Senate Spokesman, Senator Ajibola Basiru, in a statement to the media on Sunday, said the National Assembly cannot and should not be held responsible for the deplorable state of roads whether in Benue State or any part of the country.

According to Ajibola, the decision to respond to the claims by the Minister became imperative in view of setting the records straight, particularly against the backdrop of how critical the issue of road infrastructure is to the nation’s development.

“The attention of the Senate was recently drawn to disturbing and erroneous claims made by the Minister for Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola.

“Much as the upper chamber would not want to engage in any unnecessary altercation with the Minister, it is however necessary to speak up because the issue of roads infrastructure is too important and controversial a matter to be ignored where the National Assembly has been fingered by a serving Minister.

“The records must be set right so that the two arms of government should not be seen as working at cross purposes in the course of delivering good governance to electorates.

“For the 2020 fiscal year, the National Assembly approved the request for 265, 868, 037,093 billion Naira for capital expenditure by the Executive.

“The Executive later brought a revised allocation of 256, 734,983,667 billion Naira which we also appropriated. As we speak, even in the budget proposal for 2021, the Executive proposed a capital expenditure of 363, 266, 425, 976 billion Naira.

“The upper chamber cannot help but wonder where Mr. Fashola got his figure of 600 billion naira which he said was proposed by his ministry and allegedly not approved by the National Assembly.

“The Senate, therefore, invites Nigerians and specifically the Minister’s guests from Benue South Senatorial District to note that figures do not lie.”

The Senate Spokesman listed three road constructions which are ongoing in Benue South to include: Oju -Adum Okuku road at N 91,180 000; Oturko Township road at N357 200, 000; and Oju/Loko – Oweto bridge at a cost of N357, 200, 000.

The Senate spokesman further described allegations by the Minister for Works, suggesting that the National Assembly gave priority to constituency projects over other projects as an attempt to incite Nigerians against the Legislative arm of government.

“On the Minister’s allegation that priority is given to constituency projects over other projects, is an attempt to set the National Assembly on collision course with the people they are democratically representing.

“It should be emphasized, therefore, that never has allocations specifically meant for other projects been diverted to constituency projects as the later have specific allocations in the budget,” the Senate Spokesman said.

  • How Yahoo boy hacked into my account – Fashola

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has spoken on being defrauded of the sum of N3.1 million by a Yahoo Boy who is currently being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Malik Wakili was docked at the Federal High Court, Lagos, for allegedly impersonating the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola.

He was accused of committing fraud using the minister’s name in March 2019.

The EFCC told Justice C.J. Aneke that Wakili conspired with one Abdullahi Umar, who is at large, “to fraudulently impersonate the former Lagos State governor with intent to gain a monetary advantage for themselves.”

The defendant “converted the total sum of N3,106,216, being the value of the minister’s Air-miles Skywards Account Number EK248739282 with the Emirate Airlines and which sum they reasonably ought to have known formed part the proceeds of their unlawful activity, to wit: fraud.”

The Minister speaking on the incident, said the amount mentioned was the worth of Air Miles which the suspect derived from fraudulently hacking into his internet account and creating a false identity which he, among other benefits, used to buy first class tickets to various parts of the world.

Fashola said this in a statement issued by his spokesman, Hakeem Bello.

The statement read: “The Minister neither knew nor transacted any business with the suspect that involved or would have led to his being swindled.

“The amount being mentioned was the worth of Air Miles which the suspect derived from fraudulently hacking into his (Minister’s) internet account and creating a false identity which he, among other benefits, used to buy first class tickets to various parts of the world.

“Having persistently hacked into the accounts for over a period of six years, the suspect was tracked by the Minister until enough evidence was gathered which was then passed on to the security agencies.”

FG flags off 73km Calabar-Ogoja federal highway rehabilitation

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has flagged off the rehabilitation of the 73km Odukpani Junction-Ikot Okopra-Akpet 1 section of the Calabar-Ikom-Ogoja road.

The Minister flagged off the rehabilitation of the road on Monday in Biase local government area of Cross River.

Fashola said the project, which would cost N14,017,170,597.90, is a demonstration of the commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to bridge the infrastructural gap in the country.

He said this was geared towards providing the much needed stimulants for economic growth and ease of doing business.

The project handled by a local contractors, Sermatech Construction Company, is expected to be completed in 24 months.

Fashola, who was represented by the Minister of State in the Ministry, Alhaji Mustapha Baba-Shehuri, said the Federal Government is investing heavily in the provision of critical infrastructure with at least one ongoing road project per state.

“This project is a 73km single carriage way. It links the industrial town of Akamkpa to Biase-Yakurr road. Its frequent plying by industrialists around the area led to its deterioration.

“The shoulders of the road have been completely eroded, while the entire alignment is riddled with alligator cracks, as well as characterized by potholes.

“The scope of work for the contract entails site clearance of shoulders, scarification of the existing failed carriage way and the provision of asphaltic concrete surfacing.

“The scope of work also include, surface dressing of shoulders, concrete lined drains, de-silting of blocked culverts, reinforced concrete pipe culverts among others.

“When completed, the road will greatly reduce vehicle operation maintenance cost, improve travel time, reduce accidents as well as loss of lives and properties.

“It will also enhance the socio-economic wellbeing of the people along the corridor, generate employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled labour and assist in the fight against crime,” he said.

The Director in charge of Highways, Construction and Rehabilitations in the Ministry, Mr Yemi Oguntominiyi, said the massive infrastructure development was embarked on by the present administration across the six geopolitical zones in the country.

According to Oguntominiyi, the rehabilitation is aimed at providing the much needed impetus to stimulate the economy and improve the lives of the people.

The Minister and his entourage also inspected other completed and ongoing rehabilitation projects along the Calabar-Ikom-Ogoja federal highway led by the Federal Controller of Works in the state, Mr Bassey Nsentip.
